Czech player, Iveta Benesova, enter this tournament within high expectations. The 2nd seed will play her second round match against Russian Maria Kirilenko. Receiving a bye in the first round, Benesova feels ready for her match.
''This is going to be a tough match. Maria is a newcomer but she really likes clay. I don’t know what to expect from her game and style. She’s surely talented but I will have to win this match. I am trying to get my game back now. It’s really hard for me and the next few weeks are going to be determinate in my career. I have a lot to defend next week and I will have to defend my first title on grass. So I really need work on my strategy and will have to be ready for these events. If I can reach the quarters or better, it should be very good to me because I tried a whole new strategy this week and hope it will work.'' said Benesova.
Iveta is struggling a lot on tour once again. She stills number 2 in the world, but only because all her points is because of FO final and indoors season.
''I am bored to enter tournaments with low confidence. I really want to be a tread for every week and I would love everyone to fear me again as it was during indoor season. Now, I am not enjoying playing in this Tour anymore. It’s really bad to try and loose every times. For sure, I won’t retire only because of this. But I am bored to loose in the early rounds. I am going to enjoy this week in both single and doubles. I hope to go the deepest I can in each draws.'' said Iveta.

Lindsay plays a backhand during her second round match.

Berlin, GER – Lindsay Davenport battled into the quarter-finals of the Qatar Telecom Open with a 6-7(9) 6-2 6-4 win over sixth seed Martina Hingis. The victory means that Lindsay has now reached this stage of all 3 of the clay warm-up events ahead of Roland Garros, a fact which she says ‘fills her with confidence’.

‘To get at least two wins every week is very satisfying,’ said the American. ‘I’ve beaten some high quality players in recent tournaments and that makes me feel good ahead of Paris. Hopefully I’ll continue this form into Paris and put together a good run.’

Lindsay started off sluggishly against Martina though. Both women were erratic in the opening set, only showing flashes of their true capabilities. After numerous breaks of serve it went to a tiebreak, in which the Swiss Miss lucked out after getting a rather fortuitous dead let cord at 10-9.

However, losing the first set seemed to just spur Lindsay on; she tore through the second set with some flawless tennis, pinning Hingis behind the baseline and frustrating her with her pinpoint accuracy. Martina fought gallantly to get back into the match, weathering the Davenport power to come back from 4-1 down to 4-4 in the final set. But Lindsay turned it up another gear, hitting a succession of forehand winners to end the match after just under 2 hours.

‘Martina’s been in great form, winning Warsaw last week, so to beat her feels fantastic. I had a tough match against Kim in the first round too, and getting these matches under my belt is invaluable practice.’

Last week Gabriela Sabatini beat Elena Dementieva 4-6, 6-0, 6-0, it was revenge for a three set loss to Dementieva in their first head to head meeting. Yesterday in the Berlin semifinals, it was Sabatini prevailing 3-6, 6-1, 7-6. Sabatini said of Dementieva "She's agood player, but rather lazy, she rarely changes anything up. I hope what I say lights a fire in her, she's too good a player to play so listlessly every week and think we won't notice. " Sabatini will face new found friend Lindsay Davenport in the final, who put an end to the Cinderella run of talented newcomer Maria Kirilenko in three sets yesterday. Sabatini said she wishes Lindsay the best, and that the first set may play a crucial part in the end result.

Lindsay drives through a backhand in the final of the German Open.

Berlin, GER - Lindsay Davenport's superb week ended on a high note, as she won the Berlin title with a battling 6-7(8) 6-4 6-4 win over a spirited Gabriela Sabatini. After losing in the final of Tokyo earlier this season, this victory sees the American claim her maiden title on the tour.

'And who would've thought it'd be on the clay?' laughed Lindsay. 'I've been extremely happy with my level of play throughout the course of this week. I beat some top players, and now I feel confident ahead of Roland Garros.'

'I think today it came down to me having a little bit of extra luck; Gaby played very well but some calls went against her late in the third. We both knew that the first set would be crucial, and I thought that I did really well to come back and win in three. I hope she has a good showing next week; she's a nice girl and she deserves it.'

Lindsay's attention now of course turns to Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the year. She is aiming to improve on her somewhat disappointing Australian Open, where she lost to Ana Ivanovic in the second round.
