Aleksandra Wozniak can breath a little easier now and it's not just because she has finally shrugged off a cold that has been plaguing the Montreal, Quebec, native for more than a week.

It's partly because she's stopped setting goals, and the approach is paying off.

Last week, Wozniak scored a 6-2, 7-6 (3) quarterfinals win over No. 67 Laura Granville before knocking off Agnes Szavay 6-1, 7-6 (2) en route to a first-place finish at the $50,000 Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Tennis Classic in Ashland, Ky.

“That was a good win,” Wozniak said with a smile. “I had had a cold all week and so I was surprised that I was able to win the tournament. It was a good surprise because I didn't really set any goals going into that tournament.”

With the win, Wozniak moved up to No. 103 in the world and earned a spot in the main draw of the $175,000 Tier III Bell Challenge in Quebec City later this year.

“It was a good reward for winning the tournament,” Wozniak said. “It was a surprise that went along with the surprise of winning the tournament (in Ashland).”

Now, Wozniak is hoping for another surprise this week in Troy as she competes in the $50,000 Women's Tennis Classic of Troy.

“This is the third time I have played in Troy and I think it's a great event,” Wozniak said. “The people here are so nice and they help you out however they can. I enjoy playing here. Maybe I will get another surprise this week.”

Wozniak, who was awarded the event's No. 5 seed, will open singles play today.
