Rebecca Fong profited from third seed Sarah Borwell’s withdrawal from the event with an injured shoulder.

British No.3 Borwell has had an unfortunate run of injuries of late.

The Middlesbrough 27-year-old recently spent two weeks resting at home recovering from a virus that had hampered her during a trip to the US in August.

She was then struck down with an ear infection before suffering a freak injury to her shoulder while carrying her bags into her house.

Borwell played through the pain but lost in the first round of the $25,000 Madrid event last week before returning to the north east where she received treatment to her rotator cuff.

“My shoulder, through playing on the injury, has become inflamed in order to protect the rotator cuff,” Borwell told her personal website recently.

“My neck and shoulder had also gone into spasm, which protected my body from further pain.”

Physios told her to rest for five days but the injury hadn’t healed sufficiently in time for her first round match in Nottingham.

“It still isn’t 100 per cent and I need to get it right for a possible trip to Mexico,” she added. “It’s very frustrating.”
