Maria Sharapova the glamour girl of womens tennis arrived in Melbourne yesterday ready to take on the Australia Open. Sharapova is yet to win a match on the WWTT tour but she says she has been working hard and is looking foreward to competing. "I have been working really hard this last week and i hope that it will pay off, winning the title would be awesome". Sharapova will take on World Number 5 Stephanie Dubois in the forst round in what the media have called the match of the first round.

Sharapova took to Rod Laver Arina in some last minte practice and looked hungry and focues on these Championships. Win lose or somewhere in between Sharapova is sure to be a major draw card at the tournament, with her awesome power game, her beauty, her gorgeous tennis outfits and her great fighting spirit she is sure to get the attention of the Melbourne croud.

Mashona will be facing fellow American Venus Williams in her first round match at the Australian Open this year. "I'm returning well and playing solid off the ground. It should be a great match tomorrow."

(8) Elena Dementieva defeats Ashley Harkleroad

Elena wins her first real match (walkover win at GC!) and is now through to the Quarters. Ashley still searching for singles form besides her great doubles efforts.


(5) Stephanie Dubois defeats Maria Sharapova
6-4 1-6 6-1
You could tell confidence was a factor here. Dubois after making her great debut in Sydney, and Maria just lacking confidence, she has the potential though.


Na Li defeats (6) Ana Ivanovic
6-0 7-6(3)
What a turnaround for Na after losing in straight sets the 1st two weeks, she has come into this Grand Slam with fight and desire and is through to the Quarters.


Mashona Washington defeats (7) Venus Williams

Mashona played with nothing to lose and Venus didn't know what to expect. For the second week in a row the debutant suprises.

'We were shocked we had to qualify because we are both great players but it was easy enough and good practise for our singles matches. Now we are in the main draw, we hope to do some damage and come away with the trophy'

Great Aussie Open for Li Na at the moment, and with her great doubles skills along with home advantage for Lleyton, this result was never really in doubt.

(4) Peng/Roddick defeats Dementieva/Nadal
6-4 6-3
It was a case of who had the better serve and Elena let the team down in both the sets, and with Roddicks pounding serve they wern't going to lose this one.

(3) Harkleroad/Bogomolov Jr. defeats (Q) Bartoli/Santoro
5-7 6-1 7-5
Again Ashley seems to only win on the doubles court, and she showed off her great doubles skills to show Bartoli/Santoro whos boss on the doubles court.

(2) V. Williams/Mueller defeats Hantuchova/Djokovic
7-5 6-3
Venus didn't want to leave town early and showed her determination to get rid of Dani and Novak.

7-5,6-3 won US-Venus Williams with Gilles Muller from Luxembourg over Daniela Hantuchova and her partner Novak Djokovic

"After losing in singles I said that want to have great results in Mixed and doubles. Today I gave all and we both played very well. In the first set we made some errors, but in the second it was great. We think we are a very good team and we can reach a lot. Today after this great match today we go to drink a cocktail this evening together, but you can be sure that we both will try our best in the next rounds again" , said Venus Williams after winning 1r in Mixed.

Mashona wins Three Set Thriller

With a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 win over Venus Williams, Mashona Washington moves into the Quarter-Finals of the Australian Open. Making her grand slam debut, Washington has nothing to loose and everything to gain. Many believe that could make her a threat here in Australia.

The number one is on a roll besides a slow start. It is going to take a very special performance to take her down.

Stephanie played solid besides the second set, she is one to watch for the future most definatly!

Na has come out of no where, and is playing very good tennis. Suprise winner maybe? Serena hasn't been the same since Gold Coast.

(2) Daniela Hantuchova defeats Mashona Washington

Wierd match, but Mashona ran out of energy. Dani is a big threat for the title.

Doubles 1st Round

Another wierd match for Daniela today, Ashley and Venus couldn't find their Sydney form and payed the price for it.

(2) Dementieva/Li defeats Dubois/Washington

Inexperience was the key factor here and Elena and Na make their second final for the year. Na will most likely still be #1.

Lost the first round of double BUT I beat Shuai Peng in single :)

WOW!! match of the tournament. Exhilerating rallies, very tense and high drama! The #1 seeds are gone, in a bit of a surprise!

Daniela gets immediate revenge to take out the more fancied opponents. With this they become the first ever WWTT Grand Slam Champions! :worship:

Ashley defeated her close doubles partner Venus fairly comfortably and with this moves in the the Australian Open Final!

"We are very sad about our match today. We were very optimistic before this match and we really wanted the title, but the first set was desastrious. Ash and Alex played very well today, but Gilles and me never find our form. But we will play at the next Grand Slams again together, we are a good and fiendly combination.
