Patty Schnyder Prepares For Hometown Tournament

http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/global/photos_rx/Day-2-Schnyder-bh_8257_rx.jpg

World number five, Patty Schnyder has had an outstanding season so far. After a dismal start to the season in Australia, the Swiss native caught fire, winning 14 of her next 17 matches, including two final appearances (Monte Carlo and Berlin) and a quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros. Following that up with a semifinal at Wimbledon, a title in California, and another semifinal at the U.S. Open, Schnyder finds herself atop the race to the championships.

"This year, for me, has been unbelievable. I haven't had too many really bad losses since the beginning of the season. I'm looking forward to playing well here in Zurich, which I wasn't able to do last year. This tournament means so much to me, obviously. It's in my hometown, and I have so many supporters. Probably more than ever, now with my recent surge up the rankings. I mean, I'm top five now. Not many players can claim that they've been top five. I'm hoping I can put on a good show for the fans, and hopefully I won't get too nervous."

The Swisswoman takes on Stephanie Foretz in the first round of this year's Zurich Ladies International.

Gibson remembers her first big failure.

http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/1409/waitinlr8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

"To defend runner-up points is the horridest thing. You got the second most points to defend but without any honor of having added a title. This final was harder to handle than the one i lost to Patty recently because i've more experience & i know Patty better. But yeah, i'm starting to be concerned about winning a single title & i think it would be better if i was ranked to play lower tiers, maybe i would have better chances."

"I have something that will help me. Two of my best friends are Grand Slam Champion. I have people around me that made it & sure will learn me how to grab a single title, whatever it is. I've been ranked in the top 15 even 9 now (peak rank) for a while now, i need to get the titles that go with that accomplishment."

About the YEC.
"I came too late last season to get a place there but i definitely want to participate this year. Especially since i'm sure to get there in doubles. That would be a tremendous atmosphere. I'll have to do well here again to save a spot there. The crowd has been really supportive last year, for some reasons, they like me. Maybe they'll like even more now that i lost a title to Patty. :laughter:.

Tatiana fires it up in Zurich
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40745000/jpg/_40745480_golovin_getty_300x245.jpg

Another headline could be "Round 2 girl in round two"
-Will she go further?

Tatiana Golovin hottest babe of France, worshipped by many men and lesbians has once again gone to round two, but opposite last year, lately she can't go further. Her draw this week is tough, but with possibilities since her good friend Maggie Maleeva lost in a close match.
Tati herself played un-and-coming superstar from US, Jamea Jackson. Tati lost the first set on an early break, she found her rhytm late in the first set, but too late to break back. But she kept her concentration and good play in the second set where she won 6-2. The third was close and both Jamea and Tati was on fire. Tati closed the match on a breakpoint with a forehand down the line, 4-6 6-2 7-5

Gibson gets by Kuti-Kis after a slow start.

(9)A.Gibson (USA) def. R.Kuti-Kis (HUN) 4-6 6-4 6-3

Gibson prevailed, but the road has been tough."I don't really like to play people i never played. I heard several times about her & i don't wanted to be one of her upset. I kinda was observing her playin well. Sometimes, i was like, yeah, she's good, as if i was in the stands.
After the first set loss, being broken to love at the beggining of the second has been a wake up call."

For Gibson, the problem is she should use every aspects of her game."I say it often, i feel home in when i'm baselining, but a lot of people say my net game is one of the best part of my game, even if i'm not always enjoying being at the net. Sometimes, strategy has to come before pleasure."

Next opponent is russian Lina Krasnoroutskaya.
"She's too cute & too kind. I would really don't mind to lose against her if it wasn't for the YEC as my spot is not secured yet. I hope Tati & I will both make it in single too. I wish Lina great thing & i hope she'll show what Vera showed to us, that she's tough & i'm sure she is."

Schnyder Uses Crowd Support To Defeat A Spirited Opponent

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/539/Patty_Schnyder_1_.jpg

Being known as one of the best fighters on the tour has its advantages. When Patty Schnyder was down a set and 5-3, her opponent, Stephanie Foretz, froze up, allowing Schnyder to come back and win in two tight sets for a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 victory. The Swiss star moves on to take on Zsofia Gubasci of Hungary.

"I thought she was playing extremely well up until 6-3, 4-2. I broke her, and then we had that really long game on my serve, which she won. Then, I think I broke and then held at love. She just went away. I don't really know why, I suppose she's just not used to being in situations to close out top players."

"I felt like the crowd was behind me so much today. If I could choose to, I would play every single match on my career on that court. Hopefully I'll play all my matches this week on Center Court...all 6 of them (smiles). I have Zsofia next, who had some success in Fed Cup this year, before going out to Belgium. Martina and I both won today, so I'm sure the crowd was happy about that. We both really need a good tournament in Switzerland before the Fed Cup Final. I think it'll do a lot of good for us if we can both go far this week."

Dulko d Jeyaseelan(6) 75 75
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/jey80p.jpg

For the second time in two attempts, canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan crashed out first round in Zurich. Maybe an excess of confidence cost her the loss today , since she had crushed her Argentine opponnent Gisela Dulko 61 64 in their previous meeting at Wimbledon. Things changed a lot today as Dulko won in straight sets of 75 75 , letting the Canadian in an uninspired 1/5 win/loss record in her last tournaments, excluding her unexpected revival at the US Open.
Things started pretty well for Jeyaseelan , who took an early lead in the first set 3/0 then 4/1 , but she lost ficus and her rival won 4 games in a row , and clinched the first set . "All went really fast when Gisela entered the match , the first set was really weird, I dominated at the beginning , but she stormed back and I could find no weapon to stop her. " The second set was a bit closer , none of the players really took advantage of their opportunities , until Dulko finally broke a weak serve game by Jeyaseelan to finally score one of her best wins on tour .
Jeyaseelan reacted after the loss: "I have mixed feelings. i love playing so much . You know, I never was a model of regularity on tour. I can have enlightened momentums , but most of the time I don't consider myself as a real danger for players, everyone can beat me.We just had the evidence of that today. I didn't play crap today , just normal , and Gise played well enough to beat me. I can't find any excuses to explain this loss. This is just how things go , you can't win all the time, I figured that out a long time ago, but accepted it not so long ago. I don't feel as hurt as I used to for a loss, just have to think about the next time I'll be on courts. I always seem to play better against tougher opponents, I don't have real weapons, I take my strenght in the rival's strenghts . today , Gise gave me no pace to really dominate her so it was hard to find another option, her game bothered me , and as a result , i'm out first round again. Hopefully Moscow will get me some wins, I need a bit of extra confidence before the season-end championships , I can't rely only on my dream run in Flushing Meadow. Lots of things already happened since I won there, and not goo dthings , 1 win and 2 losses. Time to react , my coach and I will be ready next time. "

Anna-Lena Squeezes Into Second Round

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/659/20060816_19_71630868ms006_rogers_cup.jpg

Zurich, SUI - Anna-Lena Groenefeld, last week's finalist in Antwerp, started her Zurich campaign with a tight 6-4 7-6(6) win over Italy's Francesca Schiavone. This was her first win against the Italian, as she had lost their two previous matches.

The match, which lasted an hour and forty-five minutes, showcased two very different styles of tennis. Groenefeld imposed her powerful ground game, but the Italian also showcased her stylish play with many amazing shots. In the end, however, it was Anna-Lena who pulled it out in a tough tiebreak in the second.

"I'm glad I was able to finish it off in the tiebreak," Groenefeld said. "She was really starting to get her groove on, and I knew if I didn't finish it off then she might have won in the third. Fran is such a fun and nice player, and she's such a character out there on the court. It's a good thing, but it also makes her a tough opponent."

The German now faces #15 seed Jennifer Capriati. She will also start her doubles campaign with Patty Schnyder.

Perebiynis Pushes Through

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3328/117.jpg

Tatiana Perebiynis overcame American Venus Williams today in three tough sets: 7-6(3) 5-7 6-4.

"I really did it tough today, it was very close. Venus just wasn't letting me dictate play and I was fortunate to walk away with this match.
She is a great player, and I did play well but I'm pretty tired, and from last week too. It has been a lot of matches.
I have high expectations though & I hope I can do well here."

She will now play Argentinean Gisela Dulko who she beat in her opening match last week in Tokyo 5-7 6-3 6-3.

"I played her last week & she did really well. She has already won a match here and over Jeyaseelan, who I am close friends with, and who won the US Open.
She is obviously playing well.
Maybe I can get some tips from Sonya, so hopefully I can continue with my good form."

Dementieva Begins Title Defense With Win Over Tu
http://dementieva.ru/downloads/catimages/3643_image.jpg
Third ranked Elena Dementieva serves to Meilen Tu of America in the Zurich Ladies International first round. Dementieva scored a 7-5 7-5 win to begin her title defense.

"I felt really strong today. I had a week off after losing first round in both singles and doubles last week, and I am ready to play my best indoors, you know. I have good memories here and I'm going to, you know, draw on those and hopefully that'll help to bring me some success. I got a little tight when I had to close it out at 5-2 in the second, so it was a huge relief to be able to come out on top. Meilen has a lot of potential, but she is more comfortable on a hard court, I think. I hope I can keep playing this way the rest of the week."

Clijsters Upset At Zurich Ladies

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3103/21238749612clijsters.jpg

Kim Clijsters seeks treatment during her second round clash against Flavia Pennetta.

Top-seed, Kim Clijsters slumped to Italy's Flavia Pennetta, blaming fatigue after an exhausting long season; where Clijsters has reached atleast the Quarterfinals in 13 out of the 17 events played.

Clijsters game only briefly caught fire, as she won 11 straight points to build a 4-1 lead in the second set, and for the rest of the match she struggled to find any rhythm. There was some consolation, though, in her defeat; it means she can rest before competing in Moscow next week.

"I've played a lot of matches lately and I think I'm getting a little bit tired," Kim said. "Of course, it's not nice to lose, but I think I need a few days off now to recover from everything. I had a few chances to break her in the first set and those are the points you have to make."

"She played some good tennis," Clijsters said. "She served good at the important moments. I played some good rallies, but not at the important moments. I had some break points in the first set and I lead the second set, normally if I'm at my best I'll break her at least once, but I didn't today in the first set."

The pair left the court really affected by their loss to unheralded Li and Pironkova.

End of the season is hard for Canadian/Bulgarian duo

Magdalena Maleeva and Sonya Jeyaseelan are in a slump. One of the most producive duo so far this year (they won two Tier I titles and reached the final in Roland Garros) lost their third straight match today in Zurich, against Li and Pironkova , 57 64 63. Lack of concentration, of motivation, or fatigue dur to a long season in both singles and doubles... ? There's obviouslky something wrong with the two girls. Times are hard , and bith players announced yesterday in separate press conferences , that they even woul dlikely retire at the end of the season, despite their reasonnably good results inboth singles and doubles. Jeyaseelan commented: " Our goal was to reach the season-end championship. Our spot is not secure so far , but I think we deserve it . We need a good result in Moscow to play there, it won't be easy , because the season has been long and tiring, and we need to keep focused if we want to keep our chance to play the SEC. We could have rested a little had we won some matches here, but we had obviously no fuel left today . It's frustrating you know. We both know what we are able to do , and to see we both lost all our matches here is very hard. Not good for confidence before the main event of the season. I hope we'll qualify in both singles and doubles and have a good result there , that would be a great way to leave the LTT tour. But we need to react right now before it's too late."

Switzerland's Finest Looks Good Heading Into Later Rounds

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/5904/21238492008schnydergg6.jpg

Swiss tennis fans still have plenty to cheer about at this year's Zurich Ladies International, as Patty Schnyder and Martina Hingis have both moved into the round of sixteen in both singles and doubles. It was Schnyder, the first match on center court, who moved through first with a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6) win over tough Hungarian Zsofia Gubasci.

Q. Congraulations, Patty. Your thoughts on the match?
"Yeah, of course. I think she is a very good player. Very solid. This one wasn't quite as dramatic as the opening round, but it was really tough, especially in those breakers. I felt like I was hitting my backhand a lot better than usual, which is a good sign. I think I didn't serve too well today, but it was good enough. I'm just happy to be here, putting on some good tennis for the fans. I love it here."

You and Martina have both advanced today. Is there a bit of a rivalry there?
"No, not really. I've only played Martina once on the tour, and that was early last season. I don't really think, you know, I have to beat Martina, I have to beat Martina. No, it's not like that. We've played Fed Cup together this year, and I've gotten to know her better in that way. We're in the final, which is amazing. It's been a good season for Swiss tennis, which is what it's all about for us."

You play Agnes Szavay next. Have you ever heard anything about her?
"No, actually I haven't. I think this might be the farthest she's ever been in a tournament, which is good for her. I didn't catch her match with Shahar today, but apparently she was playing really well. My coach told me she loves her backhand, so my usual strategy of crosscourt forehand angles might not work. I might have to adjust a little bit, but it should be a good match. I'm looking forward to it."

You seem to be on a collision course with the defending champion, Elena Dementieva. Your thoughts?
"Oh, well we still have to do a little bit more work to get there."

But if you do?
"I'll talk about it then (smiles)."

Ivanovic's Slump Continues With 1st Round Loss

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v431/Derek1206/Ivanovic20.jpg
Ana Ivanovic of Serbia looks dejected during her loss to Shahar Peer.

ZURICH, Switzerland -- Ana Ivanovic's slump continued as she had yet another first round exit with a 6-3 4-6 2-6 loss to Shahar Peer of Isreal at the Zurich Ladies International.

Moderator: Questions for Ana Ivanovic, please.

Q: Ana, can you please tell us what went wrong in this match?

AI: Uhmm, well I started well, you know. I was playing my game in the first set. I was much more agressive, and I played to win. In the second set I tried to play a little bit more defensive, but actually I started to make more errors. I'm not really that confident at the moment. I know if I played my best tennis, I wouldn't lose matches like these.

Q: After such a big breakthrough last year, reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Open, why have you had such poor results this year?

AI: I felt a lot of pressure trying to back up my semifinal at the U.S. Open. I started to lose to players I shouldn't. Everytime I lost a match that I should have won, my confidence dropped even lower. If I can get some confidence back, I know I can do good things again.

Q: When will we see the real Ana Ivanovic again?

AI: Uhmm, I don't know. Hopefully soon (smiles).

Gallovits in her first Tier I QF

http://photo910.tripod.com/gkopihtm/gkopi/g1153g4.jpg

7-6,4-6,7-5 won Edina Gallovits in the third round over 12-seeded Tatiana Golovin from France and is for her first time in a QF of a Tier I - Event.

"It's more that I ever dreamed before this event. After my win in Las Vegas I had some bad weeks, but now? I can't realise it. It's a great feeling to see that you have chances against the best players of the world. Some weeks ago I lost to Tatiana Golovin, so I knew that it will be very difficult for me. The match today was so close and at the end won the player with the better nerves" , said Gallovits after her win over Tatiana Golovin.

In the next round, Edina Gallovits will meet unseeded Flavia Pennetta, who won over Maret Ani, what says Edina about her? "Yay, it's very difficult to say something about her, because I never saw her playing. She had a really good tournament and won over some good players this week, so I think it will be hard for me. However after my win over Tatiana Golovin I'm sure that I can win against Flavia. It's always very interesting for me to play against players, against who I never played before"

In the first round Gallovits won over Ashley Harkleroad in two tiebreaks 7-6,7-6 and in the second round she won over Kristina Barrois 6-2,6-1. "The first match against Ashley was good for my nerves in close situations, it was a good match and she played well, but at the end I was a bit better and I won. In the second against Kristina? Hm, she won in the first over Maggie Maleeva and so I was warned, but I played fantastic in the match. I would like to say that the match against Kristina was my best match ever, I made no errors, had a great serve and great game on net. In this match was everything perfect"

Edina Gallovits, as is generally known, is a person who likes to live in luxury, what says Edina Gallovits about Zürich? "Zürich is a nice city with great shopping miles, after my loss last week in Tokyo in doubles, I arrived directly to Zürich. I think I spent my whole prize money from Tokyo and Zürich in jewelry, clothes and other interesting things  "

Anna-Lena Into Quarters

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/659/20060811_02_57209728lb007_jpmorganchase.jpg

Zurich, SUI - Anna-Lena Groenefeld upset another seed with a 7-6(4) 7-5 victory over #4 ranked Silvia Farina Elia. She also evened up their head-to-head series at 1-1, something that the German has been doing a lot lately: closing in on those head-to-heads.

The match was tight all around, as one break eventually made the difference for Groenefeld, who has reached the Quarterfinals in her last two events, also reaching the Round of 16 at the US Open. This close victory over yet another top player shows the improvements that the German has made since the middle of the season, a time when she was really struggling to string matches together.

"Silvia's a good player, she's been struggling lately but a win over a top player never comes by luck," Anna-Lena said. "I'm very proud of my feat."

"I felt during the match that she was getting tight," Anna-Lena said. "She's probably lost a lot of confidence, so that was a factor too. She definitely let me back into the match on the critical points."

The German next faces Lina Krasnoroutskaya, a straight sets winner in her Round of 16 match.

"I am very pleased with my result this week, but I am also eager to make it to the finals again," she said. "This next match is a great opportunity to advance deeper into the tournament for me, but I can't take it lightly. Lina is a good player also, and she had to have played some quality tennis to make it this far, so I'll have to be ready from the start and play my game."

Flavia Pennetta Fights Into Semi-Finals

http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2006/01/19/pennetta_gallery__318x400.jpg

Pennetta expresses disappointment at losing second set.

Flavia Pennetta, 24, followed up her impressive wins in the early rounds of the Tier I tournamennt with a topsy-turvy
win over the talented newcomer Edina Gallovits. The first set was a close affair, lasting over an hour with neither player giving
an inch. It went to a tie-break which the young Italian won with a spectacular down the line winner. However, the joy of
winning the set affected Flavia and she was a little more erratic in the second, losing it 6-3. The third followed a similar pattern
to the first, but this time Flavia was much stronger in the tiebreak, taking it 7-2.

'I'm so happy to have made the semis, I have had such an incosistent year on the tour, and it's nice to be back among
the big guns. I have had some impressive wins, but also some shocking losses and I, like the fans, never really know how
I'll play until I'm on the court,' said Flavia in her press conference.

'I play Elena Dementieva next, a good freind of mine, and I expect to come off the court having endured a tough match,
and although I lead the head to head, she is extremely good on this surface and as the defending champion I think she will
be the favourite going into this match.'

Groenefeld Rallies for Semifinal Berth

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/659/ALG_pump.jpg

Zurich, SUI - Anna-Lena Groenefeld advanced to the semifinals for a second week in a row, this time with a 6-4 2-6 7-5 victory over Lina Krasnoroutskaya.

The match a fight from the beginning, with both players trying to reach the semifinals of this valuable Tier 1B event. Anna-Lena was able to capture the first set after 40 minutes of play with a sizzling backhand winner on break point. However, the second set, the Russian took control and took it easily in 23 minutes. Groenefeld, however, only appeared to have been trying to weather the storm that was Krasnoroutskaya in the second set, as the Russian lowered her level of play in the third, allowing the German back into the match. The third set proceeded tightly, and it was Groenefeld who raised her arms up in victory after a little over 2 hours of play.

"This was a very good match," Groenefeld told reporters. "I feel that I weathered her amazing play pretty well and dug in in the third set. She definitely let me back in the match, as I was expecting to happen. This allowed my game and my confidence to just really take over and I was able to finish it off 7-5."

The German has been playing extremely well lately, reaching the latter stages of tournaments week-in and week-out. Now she moves on to the semifinals where she will face yet another top player: #2 Lindsay Davenport.

"It's crazy, really, the amount of top players I play every week," she said. "I think I played Kim a couple weeks ago, or was it Sonya? I played both I think. Then Silvia this week, and now Lindsay."

The German, however, is not counting herself out of tomorrow's match.

"I know I have a good chance of beating Lindsay tomorrow," she said. "I've beaten the Top 4 seeds the last 3 or 4 times I've played them, so I know I am capable of playing that level of tennis."

"I'll be ready for it tomorrow, for sure."

Anna-Lena Serves Way Into Finals

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/659/21238385736groenefeld.jpg

Zurich, SUI - Anna-Lena Groenefeld gets a second try this week at trying to capture her first career title. After losing in the final last week, the German has reached the finals this week with a 6-4 7-6(8) semifinal win over world #2 Lindsay Davenport to face #3 Elena Dementieva, the title-defender here this week. The German also at the same time kept the American from claiming the #1 rank over Kim Clijsters, something the Belgian is surely appreciative of.

The match was another close fight for the German, who had to go three sets in her quarterfinal victory. This time, however, it was a battle of big servers, and the match-up did not fail to disappoint. Big serves, some reaching the 120's in miles per hour, consistently set up easy points for both players. One break made the difference, however, for Groenefeld in the first set. In the tenth game of that set, Anna-Lena picked up her return game, breaking Davenport for the game and set on a beauty of a backhand down the line return.

"I'm very pleased with this result," Groenefeld said after the match. "I can't believe I beat two top 4 players in one tournament again, just like last week, and I'll be going for my third tomorrow."

The German was making reference to Elena Dementieva, the world #3 who reached the finals earlier today with a crushing 6-1 6-3 victory over Italian Flavia Pennetta. Comparing scorelines, it would appear that the Russian would have the physical advantage tomorrow in the final, but Anna-Lena has other thoughts.

"I don't feel too tired right now," she told reporters. "I feel pretty fresh. The points were short today, lots of big serves and unreturned serves, so didn't really have to work that hard for points really. I'm not worried of being too tired tomorrow."

The German also declined any talks of nerves for tomorrow's final.

"You know, last week I have to admit I was a bit nervous," she said. "But this week is different. I've already been to a final, so I know how it feels and hopefully how to deal with pressure like that."

"I know Elena's pretty experienced at this stuff, but I'll just have to try my hardest, not let her in the match and most importantly not let myself get nervous or even think about it."

The German will be looking to play her best, as Dementieva showed today the type of game she can play.

"It won't be easy, by any means," she said. "I'm ready for a dogfight out there. Or should I say cat? Anyway, Elena's my very good friend, so whatever happens, friendship will prevail tomorrow."
