Highlandman Aug 28th, 2006, 11:10 AM Edina Gallovits wins over Alizee Cornet
http://photo910.tripod.com/gkopihtm/gkopi/g1153g6.jpg
7-5,4-6,6-2 won Romania's Edina Gallovits over Alizee Cornet from France. It was her second win this year over Cornet.
"It was a solide performance today. The first set was very close and I was happy after win it, but the second? She played better and better and I played with many errors in this set, I'm not happy with this set. The third set was good and I made not so much errors than before. For my next matches I should work on my backhand and my serve, I made too many errors today with this. It was my second win today over Alizee this year, she is a nice player and I like it to play against her. In the next round I will meet Meghann Shaughnessy, my former doubles-partner, and I know her very good, but I'm optimistic for this match and I'm sure that I can win this. She had a hard match against Jackson and so I think she is a bit tired.
In doubles I will play now with Daniela Hantuchova, she is a very nice and great player, I think we will be great team. She played great today against Pironkova. In doubles I will play again against Alizee Cornet, she plays with Chanda Rubin."

After the match:
"It was a good start to the tournament I think. I came out there a bit rusty, but I think in the final two sets I was able to play my game and close it out.
I'm pretty happy with the result of course, Gisela is a good player so to beat her is great."
Tatiana will now face 6th seeded Daniela Hantuchova

http://i1.tinypic.com/261hk7r.jpg
Tatiana serves on Match Point in the third set Tiebreak
Tatiana Perebiynis today survived a closely fought battle with Estonian Maret Ani.
In a match lasting over three hours, the young Perebiynis came back from a set down to clinch the match in a third set tiebreaker.
Relieved and joyful after her match the Ukrainian had this to say:
"This has been such a great tournament so far. I'm playing really well, I'm very happy with my form this week. I've got three wins so far over three tough competitors and I really had to fight today. I'm just really happy to be able to play my first Semi-final. I'm just very happy."
Tatiana is the lowest ranked player remaining in the event, over 20 places below third seeded, Serena Williams.
Tatiana will now play second seed Rita Kuti-Kis, who thrashed 8th seeded Klara Koukalova in under an hour, for a place in Friday's Final.
The event's top competitor, Francesca Schiavone, will battle it out with Williams for the other Finals position.
About her upcoming Semi-Final with Kuti-Kis:
"I played her a few weeks ago in America and she was just too tough for me. But that was one of my first events and I think over the past few weeks I've really gained confidence and improved. Rita is a terrific player, no doubt, but I just have to go out there and play some good tennis and hang in there. Hopefully I can make the Finals."

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/3959/fullgetty71674366mh1282006usopen55234pmla3.jpg
American number 3 seed Serena Williams needed to use all of her fighting spirit to overcome the challenges of Shahar Peer and Na Li to reach the semifinals of the tier III tournament in Tokyo, Japan.
After receiving a first round bye, Serena Williams faced Israeli Shahar Peer in a brutal encounter. Both players produced some outstanding shots and matched each others power. In the first set it was Peer who took the advantage by capitalising on some short balls from Serena. Peer sweeped through the first set tiebreak and then went into a 5-3 lead in the second set. However, Serena bravely fought back by saving three match points in the tenth game, all with forehand winners. Serena then managed to win that game and the remaining two games to take the set. Peer wasn't going to go away easy. She stayed with Serena all the way in the third set before losing her serve in the eighth game. Serena then remained calm and saved a break point before serving out the match to win 6-7(1) 7-5 6-3.

In the quarterfinal, Serena took on China's Na Li in another hard fought match. Once again Serena lost the first set in a tiebreak, as Li began to dominate with her huge backhand. Both players then traded breaks early in the second set before Serena won a tense eleventh game that consisted of eight deuces. Once Serena had won the second set, she was able to cruise through the final set as Na Li' resolve vanished. Serena finished the match with a backhand down the line winner to win 6-7(3) 7-5 6-2.
Serena Williams will play her first semifinal on the LTT tour against number 1 seed Francesca Schiavone. "I'm so happy to be here today. I really love Japan and Tokyo is an amazing city." Serena spoke about her fighting spirit in her last two matches, "I knew that if I stayed close I would give myself a chance to win the matches. I know I have the shots and I have the ability, it's just a matter of putting everything together at the right time. Whilst I sometimes got tight, I was able to come up with some big winners on important points. Both matches were of a high standard and I'm just so happy that I'm still alive in this tournament."

Despite her two tough matches, Serena is stll seeded number 1 in doubles alongside her longtime partner Stephanie Foretz from France. The pair teamed up to beat Hantuchova and Gallovits 7-5 7-6(6) to reach the semifinals of the doubles tournament.

Erika_Angel Aug 31st, 2006, 03:45 PM Puissant Perebiynis Powers Past Kuti-Kis
The Ukrainian newcomer is making a name for herself, reaching her debut final in only her forth LTT Tour event.
The angelic 23 year old lasted the distance, defeating, second seed, Kuti-Kis in three close sets to advance to a final berth against the top player of the event, Francesca Schiavone.
http://i8.tinypic.com/263eq1c.jpg
Perebiynis started the match off nervously, being broken in her opening service game, but managed to regroup to break back to level the set at 5 games all.
After saving a break-point in the next game, the Ukrainian held and then broke Kuti-Kis easily to take the first set 7-5.
In the second Tatiana's play faltered, nerves creating numerous unforced errors and sloppy play. Kuti-Kis took immediate advantage, keeping the pressure on Perebiynis and breaking twice to take the second set comfortably 6-3.
In the final set both players were playing at an intense level with impressive rallying and net play.
The pair each held serve until 4-4 where a perfectly placed drop volley gave Perebiynis a break point opportunity. With a return winner off a short second serve, the Ukrainian took the break and was now serving for the match.
The petite Perebiynis showed no sense of nerves as she raced ahead to a 40-love lead in her service game with a myriad of big serving.
A place in the final was sealed for Tatiana when on her second match point; Kuti-Kis sent her return of serve sailing long.
A jubilant Perebiynis could not contain her emotion, throwing her hands in the air, grinning from ear to ear.
She had this to say after the match:
"I think that today's match is one of the best matches I've played on the tour.
Both Rita and I were playing really well and it was extremely close.
I am just very relieved to have walked away with the win and very excited with the anticipation of playing tomorrow's final."
Perebiynis will now play the number one player of the tournament, Francesca Schiavone who defeated third seeded Serena Williams 7-6 6-3.

Erika_Angel Sep 1st, 2006, 07:34 AM Tatiana: All Smiles After Win
Tatiana could not contain her joy after defeating top seeded Francesca Schiavone to take out the 2006 Japan Open, in Tokyo today.
The unseeded Ukrainian was playing only her fourth event on the tour
http://img336.imageshack.us/img336/1562/76os1.jpg
A high level of play was consistant for both players in the first set, with scores locked at 4-4 until Schiavone was able to break the Perebiynis serve on the first break point of the match.
The top seed then served out the set with ease, taking it 6-4.
From then on though, it was all Perebiynis.
The underdog of the match, Tatiana raised her level of play, hitting with extreme power and precision. After taking an early break in the second set, she was able to close it out on her serve, 6-3.
In the third each player held serve till 2-2, when Tatiana steemed ahead 5-2 with two breaks of serve. Nerves kicked in when the Ukrainian served for the championship, finding herself down a breakpoint, however with a crosscourt volley winner and an unreturnable serve, she found herself up a matchpoint.
With a backhand winner down the line, Perebiynis collapsed to the ground in awe, the winner of the 2006 Japan Open. Clutching her hands to her mouth, she emotionally thanked the crowd for their support over the past week.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/3141/tokdf1.jpg
After a week of tough matches, Perebiynis travelled to the Shinjuku Gyoen Park where she talked of her victory:
"I still can't believe it. It has always been a dream of mine to play professional tennis and just to have the opportunity to compete on the LTT Tour already means so much to me. To be playing well as I am now though is just a huge bonus. I never thought I would have this type of success so early in my career and this victory means alot.
I have definately gained alot of confidence this week and I hope I can carry this form on, to compete in some of the larger events and be a threat to the top players. I would definately love to be a contender for every tournament I compete in."
The win marked Tatiana's first title in her short career and will elevate her ranking to 55, far from the top but improving each week.
