A refreshed Kim Clijsters arrives at Flushing Meadows and begins training after yet another loss in the semifinals last week in California.
Clijsters arrived in New York on Tuesday as the top seed in this seasons U.S Open. LTT's top-ranked player has a bye in round one. After taking three days off, she's ready to go.
Clijsters a former U.S Open semifinalist in season one, will have to battle against american favourite and world #2; Lindsay Davenport for LTT's #1 ranking in singles.
"You know, im not at all thinking about my ranking and #1 spot, im really concentrating and focused on playing well, staying healthy and winning this title, thats all that matters to me now, I want more singles titles."
In recent weeks, Clijsters has recaptured her winning form that has had her at number one now for 28 weeks, reaching the semifinals in singles of both Canadian Cup & Sony Ericsson International.
"This is my favorite time of the year to play -- Summer in the United States is just great," Clijstes said during a press conference on Tuesday. "I feel very confident, but my draw is tough, I should be ready for my first match on Friday." said Clijsters.
In Doubles, the defending champions and top seeds Clijsters/Haynes face Peer/Widjaja in the first round.

Yasmine Aug 15th, 2006, 10:41 AM Flipkens ready for USopen
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/yeljai/flipper04.jpg
Kirsten, you played your first match on tour, last season at the USopen, what comes to your mind looking back?
It seems long ago don't you think? I lost in the first round that tournament. And I was playing doubles with Shinobu who is no longer playing. Lot of things have changed you know.
What was the best moment for you?
I couldn't pick one! But first title in doubles with Klara, Fed Cup and of course Wimbledon! All great!
You seem to get on with a lot of people on tour, who are your best friends?
Althea, Maggie, Sonya were friends before and they helped a lot at the beginning. Now I got to know Tati, Kim, Ksenia, Venus and now Tatiana and Misa newly arrived on tour. But i'm sure I forget names. I like the atmosphere a lot.
You're playing your last tournament with Ting Li in doubles this fortnight, do you know who you will be playing with next season?
It's very sad Ting retires from tour :( And we have to face each other in the first round. It's unfortunate but that's how it goes. I hope we have a good match and a good run in doubles. I wish her all the best in her after tennis life and hope we stay in touch.
I have an idea of who I might be playing with next season but it's not confirmed yet. I hope it happens it would be very exciting.
You're currently ranked #9 in the race, meaning you have got great chances to qualify for YEC!
My ranking has been up after wimbledon and I'm in the top 10 now. I had ups and downs the past season but I am really happy the way things went overall...
After the USopen the next big step for you is the Fed Cup final!
We're playing Switzerland and it won't be easy. But Fed Cup atmosphere is so great there will be lot of cheering and support. I hope it's a good tie and that we win of course but Patty and Martina are great players so it's gonna be very hard!
All the best Kirsten.
Thank you.

KimC&MariaSNo1's Aug 15th, 2006, 02:10 PM Sharapova hopes to have fun in US OPEN
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/3112/annasharapovaty6.jpg
Maria Sharapova comes into the years final grand slam with a different attitude than she has had all season. "Ive been putting so much pressure on myself and expecting the wins but i need to relax and learn to have more un out there cause that is when i play my best tennis and usually when that happens i win"
Sharapova is partnering her boyfriend Rafael Nadal in the mixed doubles and is hoping for a better result than she had at Wimbledon "we lost first round in mixed and i was very dissapointed cause we were having fun and laughing all match we did not take it serious but this time we are gonna try alot harder to win but still have the laughs and fun we have all the time he keeps me down to earth"
after falling to Dushevina in California Maria attended some partys with Nadal "i wanted to get away from this environment for a little while i am always training and i play every week i thought once i was out i was going to have fun and enjoyed being a celebrity for a few days its so fun to have things away from tennis and im glad im so good looking that these things can happen for me poor Bovina she aint got much in that department but maybe thats why shes in Top 5 and im outside Top 30 but i guess for those types of players you have to be great players to just be noticed"
Maria will be signing autographed photos in her press conference on Wednesday after her match whic she hopes to win "im not looking ath the draw im not even sure who im playing but for me it doesnt matter cause whoever it is i will have to bring my A Game which is a rariety with me but who knows maybe my new outlook on life and tennis will help me through"

1st rd = (3)S.Farina-Elia (ITA) vs T.Perebiynis (UKR)
'Since the French Open, I dont know what has happened!! After winning there I really thought I was going to make the final step and become the world number 1 but my game has gone backwards. I have no idea what to do anymore to start winning - losing to Vera last week was tough but she is a good player. My doubles results have also suffered. I face Perebiynis in the first round and I wouldnt be shocked if she won. I have no confidences in my game anymore, I dont trust myself on the most basic shots going but I have to give it a go'

UDACHi Aug 15th, 2006, 06:48 PM Dementieva Practicing Hard For US Open
http://dementieva.ru/downloads/catimages/3550_image.jpg
Elena Dementieva, ranked sixth in the world, hits a serve during one of many practice sessions at the US Open this week.
As the fourth major of the year rolls around, many questions come to the mind of a tennis analyst. The dominant curiosity on everyone's mind, however, is simple; who will walk away the winner? Will it be veteran Lindsay Davenport, who has consistently been a top player, but struggled in pressure situations? Or could it be Kim Clijsters, the world number one of twenty eight weeks who is oozing with confidence as she looks to taste glory yet again? Lingering not far behind these two and others, including Silvia Farina Elia and Elena Bovina, is Russian Elena Dementieva, who, playing in her eighth career major, has never advanced past the semifinals.
"I'd like to say I'm pleased with my performances in the slams throughout my career, but I'm not a liar, and that would be a lie. I am looking forward to this event all year, you know, because it has always been my favorite of the majors. I love the atmosphere, I love the courts, and I have many fans here, you know. I feel as if my major breakthrough is coming any time now and I would love for it to be at this tournament, yeah."
Dementieva is the sixth seed here, and with a favorable draw, the aggressive power player will look to improve upon her mediocre 23-14 record this season. The tournament director has claimed to have recorded Dementieva as the player to have spent the most time on the practice courts of the entire sixty two player field this week.
"Like I said, you know, I know I have potential and it takes hard work to live up to that. You can bet that I'll be fighting for my spot in the second week and even further, you know. I want another title, and it would be incredible to take it at any grand slam."

Loose and relaxed is the mantra recent Canadian Open champ Mary Pierce is using. Despite a three set loss last week, Pierce is still very much a dangerous floater in this season's U.S. Open. The unseeded Frenchwoman is hoping her recent form will finally bring forth her first grand slam win.
Pierce, however, doesn't feel much pressure. "I'm conflicted. I kinda like being the underdog, but since I've won the title, some fear me. That makes me extremely happy also. Last week, I was a little tired after my run in Vancouver. Tatiana played extremely well, so I give her all the credit she deserves. It's a new week, and I plan on having fun as long as my run continues. Win or lose."
Pierce faces Francesca Schiavone in the first round.

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3122/Medibank2006_025.jpg
Vera Douchebag has been sleeping with freak :tape: so she can get good draws at tournaments and winning titles!
Just kidding
Vera Dushevina of Russia is preparing for her first US Open, the obvious newcomer of the year has had a remarkable rookie year, winning 3 titles (Kooyong, Ordina, and Reyjavik? :o) and posessing a marvelous 27-9 record on tour. Dushevina's attempts to get a good draw were found to be in vain as she has drawn a brutal one. In the first round she is up against Alicia Molik. Molik is a threat and has had some impressive results lately although she was double-bageled last week. If Dushevina moves on she could possibly face her first and best friend on tour Lina Krasnoroutskaya. Then she would likely meet Maggie Maleeva who is always a great force. Winning all these matches seems impossible but Douchebag will try her best and hope for the best. She will play first on the grandstand since Sania Mirza got hit by a car driven by Dementieva's boyfriend:
http://www.bratrud.com/site/images/car-wreck-closeup.jpg
RIP Sania
Anyways here is what Vera had to say about the open:
"This is a great tournament, I mean its in New York. What more could you ask for? I love it here, I'm going to see a broadway show after my first round match with Patty Schnyder and of course I'll go visit the TRL Studio because I'm a teen icon on MTV Hello! Anyways I've prepared myself for this tournament quite well. My coach and I took a good look at my game and we found some areas that we improved on and I'm excited to test some new stuff out. I'm very nervous playing Alicia, she's a dangerous player so I'm not sure what to expect. But hopefully I go out there and command the match the way I want too! Playing on grandstand is great! That's where all the celebrities flock too :tape: of course they want to see me, I'm a big star here in the states. So some of my famous friends are coming to see my play :bounce:

Tatiana Perebiynis
T. Perebiynis Interview – Pre-Match
Wednesday, 16 August, 2006
Q. Tatiana, welcome to Flushing Meadows.
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: It is great to be here. This is my first ‘Grand Slam’ so I’m very excited.
Q. You have a tough draw though: Farina-Elia, the 3rd seed in the 1st round.
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Yes, that’s true, I could’ve got a better draw (laughing). But it’s ok, I’ll just take each match as a blessing. If I can win this one I’ll be extremely pleased.
Q. Silvia has come out proclaiming you as the favorite for the match?
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Really? What did she say?
Q. She said she has no confidence and wouldn’t be surprised if you won.
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Oh ok. Well, I’m not sure about that. I know she has had some trouble recently with form but she is much more experienced than I am, and is ranked one of the top players in the world while I am pretty low. I think I am probably the underdog, and I like it that way. I won’t underestimate her game, even if she says she isn’t playing well. Perhaps it is tactics? (laughing)
Q. You are playing the doubles events?
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Yes I am.
Q. Who with?
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Oh (laughing) sorry. I am playing the doubles with Misa, Michaella Krajicek. For the mixed I’m teaming up with Max Mirnyi.
Q. You have played with them both before?
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Misa, yes. We have played since joining the tour, so only the past two events. We have only won one match though but we are improving I think. With mixed doubles though, no. This is my first mixed doubles event and Max was nice and agreed to team up with me. We both have good serves and I think we’ll work well together hopefully.
Q. Good Luck for the tournament.
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Thank you so much.

1 (1) Kim Clijsters (BEL) – 2785
2 (2) Lindsay Davenport (USA) – 2765
3 (3) Silvia Farina-Elia (ITA) – 2510
4 (4) Magdalena Maleeva (BUL) – 2360

6 (6) Elena Dementieva (RUS) – 2230
7 (7) Tatiana Golovin (FRA) – 2110
8 (12) Patty Schnyder (SUI) – 2095
9 (10) Althea Gibson (USA) – 2030
10 (8) Sonya Jeyaseelan (CAN) – 1975
with 650 points for the winner + bonus points, if Kim loses early (it's not what I want Robyn  ), then it's possible for someone in the top10 to pass her and Lindsay me thinks :p But it's too early to say ;)

Aiko in Action against Australia's Ferguson
Number 20 in the world, and Japanese number 1, Aiko Nakamura won her first round match. Aiko, is a quarterfinalist here last year and has been very nervous about defending her points. In Round two, she will play 56 in the world, Jamea Jackson who became a winner after defeating Anastassia Rodionova by a walkover.
Q. Congratulations Aiko. So what memories came back, because you've played some fairly big matches here, defeating Lindsay Davenport on Arthur Ashe as a new comer and reaching the Quarter finals?
Aiko Nakamura: Well, I guess I love new York. I like the tennis facility and I did think of the memories, I feel some pressure to have to defend my quarter final points. Defending points is totally new to me, so I was a bit nervous but I enjoyed the match. The crowd, were great and I had my supporters shouting "Aiko! Aiko!" and banging their cheerstix. You don't get this sort of atmosphere elsewhere.
Q: What Did you think of your Opponent?
Aiko Nakamura: Soph, I've never played her before, but I was very comfortable with playing her and just trying to get through that match.
Q. It looks like you have changed your gameplan, you were more agressive and charged to the net?
Aiko Nakamura: Well yes, I enjoy playing on hardcourts, but my old gameplan wasn't working so I changed it around. I think I played quite well. My two handed forehand was solid and I felt very comfortable with today.
Q. Does it feel like fans are embracing you here and helped?
Aiko Nakamura: Well, normally I am the underdog and play higher players, I am 20 in the world and Consistency is my weak point which I am still working on. But it was great to have them here, it did get a little intimidating at times, even for me but it is better to have them chanting my name isn't it?

Aiko's Band of Supporters
Q. Yes. Does that feel good, not being the underdog with your rank of 20
Aiko Nakamura: Well, not really, I prefer to play as the underdog with nothing to lose. I bring my best tennis to Grand slams, and I hope I brought my best tennis with me for this week.
Q. Lastly, has your coach helped?
Aiko Nakamura: Yes very much, I am very happy with the way things are going. My tennis may not be so good, but I am happy. My parents don't want to come to Japan so I travel with my friend Akiko and my coach. I am also friends with Dinara and we often go out for meals. But when I play, I like to visit tourist sights and go out which I do with my coach and friend. I recently visited "Central Park Zoo" and really liked it there, I like Animals.
Q. Thank you for the interview Aiko

TOP 10 Defend in S1:
Clijsters = Semifinals 320
Davenport = R64 70
Farina-Elia = R32 90
Maleeva = R32 90
Bovina = Quarterfinals 180
Dementieva = R16 100
Golovin = Runner-Up 450
Schnyder = R16 100
Gibson = Quarterfinals 180
Jeyaseelan = Quarterfinals 180
Realisticly, If Clijsters loses in any round before the semifinals, Davenport should be #1.

Tatiana Perebiynis today came back from the brink of defeat to cause one of the major upsets on Day 1 of the 2006 LTT US Open, defeating the 3rd Seed & Roland Garros Champion, Silvia Farina Elia.
Trailing 0-5, in the final and decisive set, the feisty Ukrainian reeled off 7 straight games to take the match 5-7 7-5 7-5, in over two hours of play.
US Open/Player Interview
Tatiana Perebiynis Def [3] Silvia Farina Elia 5-7 7-5 7-5
T. Perebiynis Interview – Day 1
Wednesday, 16 August, 2006
Q. Tatiana, what a fight!
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Wow, I know. I still can't believe it, you know, I just never gave up and fought so hard in that final set.
Q. What were you thinking, at 0-5 down?
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: I'm not sure I can remember (laughing). I mean just concentrating on trying to take each point. I was telling myself that I wasn't out of it yet and that I could still win. Everytime I won a point, and a game, it gave me more confidence and I truely believed I could fight back, and I did.
Q. Why the let down in the final set after winning that second, you seemed to be lost out there?
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: I think I just put so much energy and fight into winning that second set that when the third came around I just had nothing left. She was moving me all around the court, she has so many shots in her game, I just didn't know what to do. I was making too many silly errors.
Q. Has it sunk in yet, that you have beaten the 3rd ranked player in the world?
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Oh I don't know. It is amazing to be at my first Grand Slam, infront of a huge crowd and be able to get a win over such a high ranked player. I know she hasn't been having the best results lately but still I think I played so well to get this win and I'm just so happy.
Q. You play Angela Haynes next, your thoughts on the match?
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Well Angela will be tough. I know she won in straight sets so obviously she is playing well. I just have to try and play some of my best tennis, and keep up that level.
Q. You are playing tomorrow in your mixed doubles with Max Mirnyi.
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Well I'm not sure actually because I know I play Sania Mirza and she withdrew from her singles match. So I'm not sure if I'll get to play that match or not.
Q. Congratulations on your great win.
TATIANA PEREBIYNIS: Thanks (smiling).

Jeyaseelan waiting to return Jankovic's big serve during her first round 36 64 76(5) win.
FLUSHING MEADOW, NY - Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan made a winning come back on tour after one week break from singles, winning her very first match of the HardCourt season against Serbian Jelena Jankovic, in a match that could have slipped both sides. early exits in Miami and Vancouver let Jeyaseelan hopeless and unmotivated to play in California, knowing her coach would not travel with her . She only played doubles there , winning her second title with Maggie Maleeva , and getting confidence back before the US Open.
As the first player to enter Court n°2 in Day 1 , Jeyaseelan was looking anxious at the time to meet Jankovic and her powerful groundstrokes. As a result, she was unable to hold serve and Jankovic took an early lead she never gave back , and went on to win the first set 6/3. Jeyaseelan slowly got into the match , using her fitness and court-covering to frustrate jankovic in the second set. Miraculously, Jeyaseelan saved a 5/3 ball on her serve and then went on to level the match , with a recovered fighting spirit she lacked of the previous weeks. The third set was really close, both players giving the best of themselves to eventually grab the win. But Jeyaseelan managed to survive another upset , leading the match to a tie-breaker where she committed no error, letting Jankovic pretty upset and sad to have fought so hard to finally lose this huge battle.
"I guess I wanted that win more than her, I needed it moe than her , that's for sure. I had not won a match for more than one month, the last one was in Wimbledon round 2 against Dushevina. It was high time something was done and i finally won a match , and , thank God ! I di it today . I gave all I had in me, playe dwith my heart to win. Obviously, my game is not at its top, but today I knew this match was very important for the rest of my career . My goals are all getting further away , there is still one that i want to achieve, it's to go to the season-ending championship. And another loss would have made things pretty difficult . i'm glad i survived the upset , but it was again very close, typical of me, and i still have to improve a lot if I want to win another match here."
Jeyaseelan's opponent in round 2 will be Romanian Edina Gallovits, a winner over Russian Anan Kournikova. "Edina showed great skills recently, she's a newcomer and she won a tournament pretty early inher career. She can be tough. She's a really nice player , but on court there will no friendship anymore, I lost too many battles against friends of mine, I don't wanna get overwelmed by my feelings anymore. I've become a new player, a bit more aggressive, and I think I can handle the pressure of this kind of match a bit better now. but we'll see what happens, if my game is on, i have a good shot in this tournament, but my lack of confidence could send me home earlier than expected hence i'll have tobe focused 100 % on what i have to do on court , and all the off-court activities will be very limited . My lifde now is fully dedicated on tennis."
*Jean* Aug 16th, 2006, 02:00 PM Shaughnessy loses in thriller to #4 Maleeva...
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/5/shaughnessy40kq3.jpg
Meghann Shaughnessy, who didn't do anything much so far on Tour, did a very solid match in front of her crowd tonight in the first round of the US Open, Flushing Meadows. She wasn't the favorite in front of a girl seeded #4 there...but Meg lead easily in the first set 5-1, but wasted three set points to lose it in the tie break...in the second set, Maleeva lead 5-3 and served for the match but Meg came back in a very big thriller tie break she won 8 points to 6 after saved a match point...in the final set, everybody thought everything was underway for Meghann, who lead 5-1 but like in the first set, she lost her mind and saw Maleeva coming back from nowhere to win it 7-6 6-7 7-6...a very tough loss for Meghann, who will play now doubles with Gallovits and mixed with Mayer...

With my quick calculations :o (2 minute thinking in my head:lol: ) .....
If Clijsters fails to reach atleast Q/F then Maleeva, Bovina & or Dementieva win the U.S OPEN they will be #1.
Schnyder and Gibson might come close with bonus points
Golovin doesn't have a chance being RU in S1 but could get back into top 5 and Jeyaseelan, would be top 5 definately. :worship:
So more pressure on Elena Bovina! :o ARGH!

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/5/shaughnessy40kq3.jpg
Meghann Shaughnessy, who didn't do anything much so far on Tour, did a very solid match in front of her crowd tonight in the first round of the US Open, Flushing Meadows. She wasn't the favorite in front of a girl seeded #4 there...but Meg lead easily in the first set 5-1, but wasted three set points to lose it in the tie break...in the second set, Maleeva lead 5-3 and served for the match but Meg came back in a very big thriller tie break she won 8 points to 6 after saved a match point...in the final set, everybody thought everything was underway for Meghann, who lead 5-1 but like in the first set, she lost her mind and saw Maleeva coming back from nowhere to win it 7-6 6-7 7-6...a very tough loss for Meghann, who will play now doubles with Gallovits and mixed with Mayer...
you won the first set then lost the next 2

AlexSydney Aug 16th, 2006, 02:50 PM Too Much Pressure?
http://www.radio-canada.ca/sports/images/tennis/0804/CoupeRogers2004/BovinaElena050804.jpg
She never feel so more pressure in her tennis professional career until this week at the US Open in Flushing Meadows as she has to defend her quarterfinal points from last year as well as she could reach the top spot in the ranking if she win the title and Clijsters fails to reach at least quarterfinals. Is it too much to ask for, isn’t?
She admits she felt bit nervous in her first round against Klara Koukalova, which is pretty normal for her. The thing is she doesn’t realise she could be #1 after the Open if she win the title until after won the match and one of tournament directors told her about it. “I kinda wish he didn’t told me that because it already gave me too much pressure on me. I also worry that I might lose in my next match because of that.” Bovina said.
She increasing concern about the top players blew up their chance today especially Davenport (#2) and Farina-Elia (#3) as well as Maleeva (#4) edged past the opening round. But in the same time, it motivated her to set a goal to #1. “I really would love to be #1, it would be the biggest accomplishment for me.”

Flushing Meadows, NY - A fitter, sleeker Anna-Lena Groenefeld reached the second round for another week with a win over Tsvetana Pironkova 6-7(6) 6-4 6-4. The German has not lost in the first round in a very long time.
Featuring her usual powerful groundstrokes, especially her penetrating backhand, the German was able to secure two breaks in the match to assure her of victory over the feisty Bulgarian. The German also seemed to be moving a lot better than before.
"I worked on a lot of cardio along with my weight-training, so I got slimmer," she explained. "I feel like I can move around the court a lot lighter now, and I can also run down balls that I wouldn't have been able to before."
The German also cited some help from an unspecified coach before arriving in New York, receiving help in groundstrokes and strategies.
"I worked with someone before the start of the US Open," she said. "We worked on really the mental aspects of the game: when to attack, how to attack, and when to just keep the ball in play."
The German moves on to the second round yet again, and she faces Bethanie Mattek, the crowd favorite who upset 16th seed Marta Domachowska.
"I'm not taking [Mattek] lightly," Groenefeld said. "She had to have played some Top 20 tennis to beat someone in the Top 20, obviously. So I'm expecting a tough battle for sure."
"I think it will be hugely mental for me though," she said. "I have a lot of pressure on myself to finally get past the second round because I know I've been stuck on this stage for a very long time. But Bethanie will have lots of pressure on herself as well, and she will be nervous, so we'll see what happens and hope for a fun and exciting match."

Europe rocks Aug 16th, 2006, 09:30 PM Lina leaves it to the end
http://www.tennisrulz.com/players/krasnoroutskaya/gallery/lina15.jpg
10 Russians featured in the singles draw of this seasons US Open, but by the end of the day one didn’t show up, another didn’t have to strike a ball, there was a battle of the Russians, one lived up to her seeding, whilst the other disappointed, one eased through, another was edged out, one overcame a second set lapse and the other almost choked. The latter was Lina Krasnoroutskaya.
Amongst the low-key surroundings of court 3 at Flushing Meadows, two lowly ranked women battled it out for a place in the second round and it was Argentine Gisela Dulko who took the early advantage. Dulko pounced on a high number of forehand errors from the Russian to go up a late break and with it the set.
Krasnoroutskaya upped her game in the second set and by cutting down the number of errors she broke the Argentine’s mediocre serve to 15 and go up 3-1, only for Dulko to get the break back. However, it was not enough for Krasnoroutskaya’s inspired play as she ripped several backhands down the line for winners or draw out more errors from Dulko and a double fault at set point for Krasnoroutskaya gave her the set 6-2 and allowed her back into the match.
The third set followed a similar pattern, as the young Russian took advantage of some sloppy play from her opponent and move into a seemingly unassailable 5-1 lead. Serving at 30-30, Krasnoroutskaya looked set for an easy third set, but, she choked. Given a simple backhand down the line, the shot where she made most of her winners, it let her down as it flew out by half an inch and that seemed to unsettle her, as she only managed to win 3 points in the next 2 games. Dulko found herself serving to equal the match at 5-5, but the nerves appeared to jump from the Russians racket to her own. After fighting so hard to get back into the set, Dulko made four simple errors, one of them a basic cross-court forehand to give her opponent a hard fought 3-6 6-2 6-4 victory and book a tie against Alicia Molik of Australia, who shocked Krasnoroutskaya’s doubles partner Vera Dushevina 6-4 6-7(4) 6-4.
“You have no idea how I feel! God, being up 5-1 in the final set, only for me to then just go off the boil and out of, well, my mind; it is so good to be standing here with a victory under my belt. I was so nervous in that first set and my forehand was just really off, Gisela played really well, exploiting it, making angles and so on. However, I knew that I could do it as I’ve been making some small, baby steps in the last few events, beating a few top players and coming close. It’s been a real learning experience, so hopefully I can take this into my next match. I beat Alicia at the French, so maybe I can repeat that again,” she grinned. “When I found out that Vera lost I was just shocked more than anything, she has been playing pretty well since her Wimbledon let down. All I know is that when we play doubles I’m going to need to keep her motivation up, because I really rely on her to set everything up, I hope the disappointment of the singles clears her head.”
Ceze Aug 16th, 2006, 09:53 PM Maggie survives Meghann
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/21236789651-1.jpg
Maggie defeated Meghann in 3 sets 6-7(3) 7-6(8) 7-6(1)
In a very tight match, Magdalena Maleeva managed to defeat a determined Meghann Shaughnessy who was playing in front of home crowd on Arthur Ashe Stadium in the first round of the US Open.
Q: So Maggie, today was not an easy match, you had to battle to come back in 1st and third sets.
Yes, Meghann played very well today. You know, she's a great player, you can't afford to let her lead this way 2 matches in a row. I was lucky today, but next time I won't make the same mistake. She was leading 5-0 in the 1st set, but I managed to come back. Still it wasn't enough, she won the tie break with some great shots that, you know, explain why she is such a dangerous player to meet in the first round of a slam. And then again, in the third set, she had another huge lead, something like 5-1, and you know, she was about to serve for the match. But then I don't know what happened, it triggered something in my mind, don't know why, but I just wasn't able to lose 6-1 in the last set after fighting so hard in the first 2 sets. And maybe Meg was a little bit tired at the end, it was a long long match you know."
Q: Obviously it was one of your tightest matches.
Yes, I'm used to playing tie-breaks in my matches, but it's the first time I have 3 tie-breaks! Once again, all the credit to Meghann, who pushed me to the limit today.
Q: Did you see the other results?
Yes I did, I'm happy for my doubles partner Sonya, and also for some good friends like Althea, Tati, Edina, Ting, etc. But there have been some big upsets today too, it's very surprising to see Lindsay, Silvia or Kirsten losing in the 1st round! I feel sad for them. But you know, the Tour is harder and harder, with all these determined newcomers. Of course that's a good thing for the Tour, but today I'm just sad for my friends.
Q: After Lindsay (#2) and Silvia (#3) 's losses, some say that you have great chances to take the 1st spot if you win the title and if Kim loses earlier than last year
Oh it's too soon to speak about that, and you know, Kim will probably go further than me! (laugh)
Q: What are your objectives for this US open?
Well, my first goal was to improve my performance from last year. So far I've saved all the points from last year in singles, and in doubles I lost in the 1st round last year. This year I hope we will win some matches with Sonya. We've proved to be a strong team together. Did you know that we began to play together just after the US Open, last season? I think we can be proud of what we've achieved in just one year (smile).
Q: And you're the top seed in mixed doubles with Andre Agassi...
Yeah, and I have almost nothing to save from last year, so it's great, in fact, I have no pressure at all in that Grand Slam (smile).
Magdalena Maleeva will next meet Zofia Gubacsi in the second round. It will be their first meeting.

aisha Aug 17th, 2006, 01:00 AM Pierce Earns First Grand Slam Win
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/577/8587799pierce.jpg
Looking to add to her championship resume, Mary Pierce has gotten one huge gorilla off her back - her lack of a grand slam victory. Mission accomplished. Pierce, who was primarily reared in the U.S. earned a hard fought win over tough Italian Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Although Pierce survived this scare, her path through the draw must clear one roadblock - her next opponent - no. 1 Kim Clijsters, whom she beat on her way to the Canadian Cup championship.
Pierce is optimistic yet realistic about her prospects in this re-match.
"Well, I thought I played a little passive somewhat. But my serve didn't fail me much, so I turned it up when I needed to. I definitely want to get better and feel I need to play better to stay with Kim. I'm always wary of re-matches. Kim definitely doesn't have her mind set on being the next high profile seed gone, so I need to be careful. As long as I'm relaxed and don't get too tense, I like my chances quite a bit."
