http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3103/212316102004clijsters.jpg
California, U.S.A - World No.1 Kim Clijsters (above) is staying positive for her campaign to win the LTTS2: Sony Ericsson International in California.
The former French Open Champion in season 1, will be a favourite for the Tier IB championship, entering the tournament with a bye.
"I'm feeling a little bit nervous for my first match of the tournament," said Clijsters. "I know this week, I really need to play my best, especially if I want to keep the top spot."
"I’m hoping for another title here, its been awhile since winning. I mean, I need to win this title, but there are a lot of other good players out there and lately they can really threaten my game. But I like that, I like the competition, it helps my game grow."
In Round 2, Clijsters will face L.Krasnoroutskaya of Russia.

KimC&MariaSNo1's Aug 8th, 2006, 02:26 PM Sharapova downs her Doubles Partner
http://mashafan.free.fr/galeriephoto/albums/tournois/2006/sandiego/maria-sharapova_fr_sandiego06_118.JPG
In what was a most dificult match-up for both players Russian Maria Sharapova defeated her good friend and doubles partner Jennifer Capriati 7-6 7-6. Both players where obviously nervous throughout the match and that shows on the tighness of the match.
"It was such a tough match and it was so up and down im glad i played great when it counted and my best tennis came out in those tiebreaks really hitting my shots on the line and my serve saived me so many times tonight i feel good about my match tonight but im upset it came at the expense of Jen shes a great player and really has been impressive lately, i hope we win in the doubles tomorrow so she doesnt have a terrible tournament" said maria after her match
In 2nd round action tomorrow Maria will play fellow russian Vera Dushevina who won in 3 sets "shes an impressive player and has had great success i hope to have a great match with her i hope im ready for a player of her calibur"

iPatty. Aug 8th, 2006, 03:01 PM Patty Schnyder Gets First Win Of Summer, Takes Out Cornet
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/stanford068.jpg
Following two consecutive first round losses, Patty Schnyder has ended her streak with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over French newcomer, Alize Cornet.
"Alize is a good player. I remember she played a good match at Wimbledon against Lindsay, so I knew she could play. I just had to be careful and show her who was boss," Schnyder said.
With this win, Schnyder hopes to build up her confidence and make a run into the latter stages of this tournament. Since falling out of the top ten last week, Schnyder hopes to regain her position.
"I have Aiko next, which should be relatively straightforward for me. Then Elena, most likely. We're great friends off the court, so it'll be tough. I beat her at Wimbledon, so I probably have a little edge. We'll see," Schnyder said.

http://eur.news1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/ap_photo/20060407/all/l1857371.jpg
Anna-Lena Groenefeld hits a backhand during her match against Michaella Krajicek.
California, USA - Anna-Lena Groenefeld advanced to the second round for another week at the Sony Ericsson International with a 6-3 6-4 straight-set victory over Dutch youngster Michaella Krajicek.
Playing solidly on both wings, the German was able to keep her game together and cause the Dutch teen to make the mistakes. She finished with a modest 15 winners to only 11 unforced errors.
"I think I played a great match today," the German said. "I kept the pressure going and needed only one break in each set, and I'm glad I was able to close it out at 5-4 in the second."
The German advances to the second round again, but lately she has had problems stepping over the threshold. Last week, Groenefeld lost to world #1 Kim Clijsters in the second round in three tough sets.
"You know, I'm just happy I won a match," she said. "At least that means I'm consistently a Top 32 player, but I do want to start improving my results for sure."
This week, her task won't be any easier, as she faces world #3 Silvia Farina Elia.
"This will be a tough match for sure," the German said. "She's a really crafty player, and I'll have to stay focused and not give up too much of the baseline. I'll have to be aggressive, definitely."

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3271/aiko1.jpg
"Come on!"
Japanese number 1, Aiko Nakamura the Wimbledon and Us Open quarter finalist came through a thrilling encounter in round one of California on Monday night. Aiko defeated India's finest, Sania Mirza 6-7(5) 7-6(1) 7-6(3) in a thrilling encounter, to set up a match against 10th seed Patty Schnyder in the next round. Schnyder, was quoted as of saying "It should be straight forward for me" but Aiko hopes to prove the swiss wrong:
"I've beaten girls like Davenport, Ivanovic and Jeyaseelan before. I am going to try and make it as unstraightforward as possible for her. She obviously won't be expecting much from me from her interview, so I am hoping to show I can compete and use my best weapons against her. I am a great competitor and it is great to win a match before the US open as I will be losing quarter finals points soon and drop out of the top 30 so to get a win and notch up some points will be great for me. I am really nervous about losing some points at the US Open, it is the first time I have ever had to defend points. But I am looking forward for my match with Patty and I will take it one match at a time. I hope to also play well in my doubles match with Dinara. Dinara has been improving really well in singles recently and is a great feature for the top 20 in Singles. I have enjoyed playing with Dinara this year."

Mary Pierce extended her winning streak with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win vs. Slovakian talent Daniela Hantuchova. Coming off a title in Vancouver, Pierce overcame weary legs and an erratic second set to fight off the spirited challenge of Hantuchova. However. Pierce relied on strong serving to eek by the match, particularly in the third, erasing all five break points in the set.
Next up, she faces compatriot and good friend, no. 7 Tatiana Golovin for a Round of 16 berth.

Alberto Aug 9th, 2006, 11:16 AM Rita Kuti Kis continues her dream in California.
The hungarian player reached this morning her pass into the third round in the Sony Ericsson tier I .
http://villanyember.ifrance.com/kuti6.jpg
Rita Kuti Kis could overcome 11th seed , russian Rodionova in three sets after losing the first one 1-6 in just 17 minutes. Then Rita started to play fighting each ball as she did in the Fed Cup ties and could win the match with some nice winners and passings. 7-5 and 6-4.
"Rodionova made me play hard and everypoint was decisive,I play next Golovin, it will be very hard, she is so talented that will be difficult but not impossible, let´s see what hapend..."
Will Rita win her third consecutive match in a row for the 1st time in her career??

Aiko Shows Her Frustrations
Aiko Nakamura fell last night to Patty Schnyder 26 75 61. Aiko started the match well, a set and a 54 lead, but choked the match away. Aiko left the court in tears at her performance and the lack of points she has gained from this hard court season. Aiko did win in her doubles with her friend Dinara Safina though.
"My main aim, was to just get as many ranking points as I could to defend my quarter final at the US Open. I am not going to even do that now, I will be ranked in the 40's and have to play lower tier events - its not so fun there. I gave my all to the first two sets, but in the final set I had absolutely no energy left. My strategy was wrong this hardcourt season and I will try my hardest to change it for the Us open. I am still am in doubles though, and hopefully I can play well. But I am really sad, with my performance."

California, USA - World Number One, Kim Clijstes, advanced to the Round of 16 with a comfortable straight sets win over Russian, Lina Krasnoroutskaya, in the Round of 32 of the LTT Sony Ericsson International in California, United States. Kim used typical speed and power tennis to knock her smaller and weaker opponent, with a score of 7-6(6) 7-6(2) in ninty four minutes.
"I'm quite pleased with my performance today. Lina started the match well and I'm happy I was able to turn things around and win the important points."
"Im hit my serves very well and my groundstrokes were quite accurate. Not to mention the fact that my opponent, Krasnoroutskaya, really seemed to be on her game today. I'm happy about the win." said Clijsters.

Second seeded Lindsay Davenport and former world number 1 Martina Hingis are set to face off in tonights Stadium Court match. The pair have only met once, when Davenport was able to overcome the strong challenge from the swiss miss winning 5-7 6-2 6-4 at the Italian Open earlier this season.
Davenport spoke about her second round win and her third round match. "Yesterday was a great win. Im very pleased to have finished it in straight sets. Jankovic won her opening round match 6-0 6-0 so I knew it was going to be tough. Its great to think that my stratergy this week can handle that type of tennis."
Me and Hingis go way back. We love to play doubles together and often practice together, so to play against each other here is just so much fun. Its weird to think that after over a season and a half this is only our second meeting, but its sure going to be fun, even if it is only a third round meeting."
iPatty. Aug 9th, 2006, 02:43 PM Patty Schnyder Overcomes Nakamura To Set Up Dementieva Clash
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/sandiego0610.jpg
Down a set and 4-5, Patty Schnyder was able to claw her way to a victory today at the Sony Ericsson International. The Swiss number one overcame her small, fiesty opponent, Aiko Nakamura, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
"It happens a lot. You lose an easy first set, come back to win the second set in a close set, and then just roll through the third. I could tell that after she lost the second set, she just went away. She impressed me a lot in the first set though. She was striking her backhand down the line very well. I was having trouble reading her game. My fitness really shone through in the end, so I'm happy that all the extra work I put in is finally paying off," Schnyder said.
Schnyder will now take on Elena Dementieva, the six seed. This marks the fourth meeting between the two players, with Schnyder holding a 2-1 advantage.
"I think I have Elena next, if she won. She did? Okay, then. I love Elena. She's a great girl and one of my friends, so it'll be hard to play against her. I don't match up well with her, but I still have beaten her twice. Her serve goes to my backhand, since I'm a lefty, and it's hard to return. I just need to prolong the rallies, loop some balls to her backhand, and try to not let her dictate. I think I'll do okay. The last time we played was at Wimbledon, on my worst surface, and I won so. We'll see how it goes," Schnyder finished.
Patty Schnyder and Anna-Lena Groenefeld were victorious in doubles competition as well. Schnyder will play the sixth seeded Dementieva later today for a spot in the quarterfinals of this tier one event.

American Serena Williams caused an upset today at the Tier I event in California by beating the 12th seeded Polish player Marta Domachowska 7-5 7-5. Serena wore a new outfit as she managed to edge Marta out of the tournament.
"It was a tough first round match," said a jubilant Serena. "I played well last week and I tried to improve on that here today. Unfortunately I was unable to find my rhythm and had to rely on all my fighting qualities to get the win. Marta is a good player, so this is a nice win for me."
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/8423/71596044mw054jpmorganchas080901800x600ck3.jpg
Serena next faces #8 seed Althea Gibson. "I have played her a few times and lost. We were partners in Fed Cup and I respect her and her game. It will be a tough match but I'm going to give it my best. I'm really just looking to improve my game and use the matches here this week as a stepping stone for the US Open next week."
Serena also managed to win her first round doubles match, teaming with Stephanie Foretz to beat her sister Venus and Azarenka 7-6(3) 6-3.
AlexSydney Aug 9th, 2006, 03:42 PM BOVINA CRUISES INTO THIRD ROUND
Russian #1 Elena Bovina had been struggled in her first match against Japan’s Ai Sugiyama today at the Sony Ericsson International yet managed to win the match in straight sets with both sets tiebreaker.
“I just wear out of my energy as I just arrived here from Las Vegas for screw with Danny McCoy.” Bovina explains, “Anyway, I’m happy to be here on time and won my match otherwise it would be waste my time to left a gorgeous guy there in the Sin City. I better make a call him and come over here for another action.”

Bovina next faces Australia’s Jelena Dokic who knocked Maret Ani of Estonia in straight sets. The winner of the match will take on most likely world number one, Kim Clijsters of Belgium.

UDACHi Aug 10th, 2006, 02:49 AM Russian Grinds Through To Third Round
http://dementieva.ru/downloads/catimages/3504_image.jpg
Sixth seeded Elena Dementieva tees off on a forehand during her second round victory over Zsofia Gubasci in California.
Watching Elena Dementieva play the first set and a half against Zsofia Gubasci, there would be no reason to believe the Russian was the sixth seed at the prestigious Sony Ericsson International. Down 6-7 (5) 0-3, Dementieva looked off of her game and well on her way to another early round exit. That's when the fighter's instict and aggressive mentality set in, and Dementieva grinded out numberous 20+ stroke rallies en route to sneaking the second set away 7-6 (6). In the third, Dementieva was able to emerge the winner after much better tennis began to come into view, and she smacked a backhand cross court for the win.
"I knew Gubasci's game well, you know. We have played match after match after match after match in doubles and, I mean, she might not be a familiar face to many of the top singles girls, but I have a lot of experience with her game, and I knew how to play it. It took me quite a while to really start thinking and tell myself what I needed to do, you know, because I had a set gameplan. Once I stuck to that, it became much easier. She played a fine match, but I was stingy on the important points and I made her work. I hit looks of great winners today. I feel really good about my chances against Patty, yeah."

Cat's Pajamas Aug 10th, 2006, 06:34 AM The "Dushebag" Strikes Again!
http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/global/photos_rx/douchevina_7385_rx.jpg
Vera Dushevina is having her best week since her victory in Iceland several weeks ago. The Russian has reached the quarterfinals by knocking out #3 seed Silvia Farina Elia in an incredible 7-6(6) 4-6 7-6(6) thriller.
In the first set both players held to 3-3 when Silvia broke, Vera waisted no time breaking back, to 4-4 and they both held to 6-6. In the tiebreak Dushevina got herself in some early trouble at 2-5 struggling to find her first serve. But she fought back with some aggresive play and a double fault from the Italian woman, on her first set point the Dushebag hit a slice serve out wide with Silvia getting it back short. Vera hit her approach deep and wide and Silvia trailed it down only to see the Russian pluck off an easy volley with a clench of the fists.
In the second set Farina Elia showed some veteran tennis, changing her game plan with more slices and dices. This threw the youngster off and she couldn't handle Silvia's variety. By the time she rallied back from 5-2 it was too little too late as Sivlia's insurance break held through to even things up at 1 set all.
In the third momentum shifted again with Dushevina finally getting a good grip on Silvia's arsenal by hitting her shots in deeper with a faster pace, and then following those shots in. This all helped but she continued to make more mistakes and the Italian kept Vera on her heels not getting comfortable on court. It was becoming the Dushebag's match to win or lose and despite serving for the set at 5-4 and 6-5 she couldn't hang on and it went to a tiebreak. Once again Vera was up at 3-1 and 5-3 but nerves were preventing her from her usual fluid shots. Silvia managed to fight to get her first matchpoint at 6-5 and had a good shot lined-up hitting a down the line slice backhand but a sprinting Dushebag was yelling Russian profanity as she struck up a lob that bounced 2 inches inside the baseline to save the matchpoint. After that Farina Elia began complaining about the call with no avail and hit two unforced errors to hand the match to the youngster who moves into another quarterfinal!
"Wow that was a great match! I mean that's about the highest quality I have ever played with an oppenent. We were both striking the ball well but I think I had a few good shots when I needed them especially that lob to save matchpoint, I don't even practice those and I still managed to get it high enough to where she couldn't do it. She complained that my yelling distracted her but i was like, bitch  I stopped after I hit the ball, its not like I yelled brick while she was striking the ball. I think she was just looking for an excuse, I don't know, I don't care, I am the Dushebag and that is all that matters."
Bepa was later told what a douchebag really was and although she chuckled and then stopped laughing she claimed she still didn't mind the nickname :o
"Doubles was a lot of fun as well, I mean that match was super close and we saved a matchpoint there as well. I think we play Anna-Lena and Patty a lot and we've beaten them. But I really just want that doubles title, so much that its starting to make me mad  we are a good team and we're getting consistent results, its just we're missing that one big win. Hopefully we can snag it here. "
Vera will next play Althea Gibson of USA for a spot in the semifinals.
"Who do I play next? Althea? Oh! :hearts: I love Althea! She is the sweetest girl on tour, definetely Miss Congeniality of LTT  I don't think we've ever played but she is a great player and of course I'll be happy to win but if Althea wins than she better go on to win the title :fiery: ;) Its just nice to keep getting consistent results now. I used to be very streaky but now I've found a nice groove and I rarely lose first round anymore, starting to make a lot 3rd rounds and quarterfinals and its paying dividends as I'm seeded for the first time! And with these results it can only go up until I reach my ultimate goal of world number one :armed: "

Rumours has it, that she has been playing in/with the snow lately so she could be faster on the court. Lately she and Althea Gibson has won two doubles tournaments in a row, sweeping all opponents to the side.
But doing this, Tatiana didn't have the power to go far in her singles matches, losing early.
This week it changed and both Tati and Althea are in the quarters.

I am not on any drugs, why should I? I have just worked out more lately. It's nice to finally be in a quarter again, especially with so many good friends in them also. But I do hate to play my friends, my level falls a lot. But I have gotten stronger mentally. Doing the wheelbarrow with Althea has helped on my muscles and also keep my head up when I am down.

Ceze Aug 10th, 2006, 08:40 PM Maggie survives Maria
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/1mmalpic10-1.jpg
Maggie defeated Maria Kirilenko 2-6 7-6(7/1) 7-6(7/0)
After a very bad start in the 1st set, Magdalena Maleeva managed to overcome Maria Kirilenko from Russia in 3 sets in the 3rd round in California, not without fear in the last 2 sets. In fact, both last 2 sets went into tie-break, that the 4th seeded player finally won respectively 7/1 and 7/0. With that win, Maggie reachs the quarterfinals and equals her performance from last year. Next opponent is Patty Schnyder from Switzerland.
"Maria is definitively a dangerous player, with great shots and a very solid serve. She surprised me in the 1st set. You know, it was our first meeting, so I didn't know what to expect from her. But I knew it would be difficult, because she had some great matches before. And she didn't disappoint me! I had a very bad start, but then I changed my game, and it worked, I was able to control some of her strong shots. In both tie-breaks, I guess she lacked experience. You know, I'm much older, it can be useful sometimes (laugher). But next I play Patty, who is not a newcomer. She beat me at Fed Cup, at the beginning of the year. I will never forget that because you know, because of that, we (Bulgaria) didn't qualify for the second round."
In doubles, Maggie and Sonya qualify for the quarterfinals after defeating Sania Mirza and Ai Sugiyama in straight sets 76(6) 61. Their next opponents are 2nd seeds Stephanie Dubois and Silvia Farina-Elia.

iPatty. Aug 11th, 2006, 02:56 AM Patty Schnyder Fights Past Dementieva To Reach Quarterfinals In California
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/sandiego0622.jpg
For the second time in four weeks, Patty Schnyder has upset Russian Elena Dementieva. This time, in the round of sixteen at the Sony Ericsson International, the Swiss prevailed 7-6 (5), 6-4.
"I felt not that good. It was pretty windy out there, and I take pretty big swings, so it was hard a little bit to get my rythym. I almost choked that one away, but I was able to come up with a few good serves and closed it out," Schnyder said.
After clinching a tight first set, Schnyder rode the advantage to a 5-1 lead. Dementieva, known as a big fighter on tour, clawed her way back to 5-4, but was shut out with two consecutive aces as Schnyder advanced to the quarterfinals, where she will play Maggie Maleeva.
"I play Maggie next. She's having a good year so far, she's reached number four in the world now, which is really good for her. We've played only once before, I think. In Fed Cup earlier this year, and I beat her. That was a while ago, so I don't think it'll make much of a difference. I'll just go out there with confidence and hope for the best," Schnyder finished.

iPatty. Aug 11th, 2006, 03:42 AM Patty Schnyder Overcomes Maleeva To Reach Semifinals In California
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/zurich0416.jpg
"Good match, Maggie," said Patty Schnyder after defeating Maleeva 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson International. The Swiss seems to have found her stride again, after losing in the first round on two consecutive occasions.
"I thought I improved a lot from yesterday against Elena. I had to, because I couldn't play like I did yesterday and beat a great player like Maggie. I served well, my tactics were good. I knew she liked to run and counter pace, so I just fed her junk and let her self-destruct. She got out to that 3-0 lead because I was stupid enough to try and hit winners past her. Once I adapted to her game, it was fair game. I think I just wanted it more," Schnyder excalimed.
In the semifinals, Schnyder takes on an American at home, Lindsay Davenport. Davenport, who lives just ten minutes from the tournament site, is tied 1-1 in meetings with Schnyder. Both meetings came last season.
"Lindsay's been on a bit of a hot streak lately. She made the finals last week, so she could be intimidating for most people. But not me. I like playing her. She's a clean hitter, so you know that you have to play a good match to beat her. My game matches up well with her. I like to move her around, and she's quite slow. We'll see if I can get the advantage in enough of the rallies to threaten her. It'll be interesting. I just want to get back into the finals. I haven't won a tournament yet, so this would be big," Schnyder said.

iPatty. Aug 12th, 2006, 04:02 PM Patty Schnyder Sweeps Davenport Aside In Straight Sets, Into California Final
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/zurich0229.jpg
Into her third final of season two, poised to re-enter the top ten, defeating three consecutive top ten players. All describe Patty Schnyder. The Swiss tenth seed has dispatched of number two seeded American, Lindsay Davenport, 6-4, 6-3.
"I did it, you know. This has been my best week by far. I beat Elena, Maggie, and Lindsay in three consecutive matches. That's what I like to call earning my keep. Lindsay played well today, I thought. I think the pressure of being the favorite got to her a little bit. Plus, she's playing at home so she's bound to be a little nervous. I just went out there with the mindset that I had nothing to lose, and I really played amazing. My serve was so good today. I felt like my forehand was on and my backhand was more solid than usual. I'm just really excited to be back into another final," Schnyder said of her win.
Schnyder has been in two other finals this year, both on clay in Monte Carlo and Berlin. She lost both of them. Her opponent in this final will be Althea Gibson. The elderly American has swept through the draw this week, taking out many dangerous players, including Vera Douchebagvina and Kim Clijsters.
"I'm really excited to play Althea. She seems to be playing really solid tennis this week. I played her in Berlin, and won in two tiebreakers. She beat me at the U.S. Open last year, so she might be the favorite a little bit on the hardcourts. Both of us are looking for our first titles. After I lost those two finals during the clay season, I doubted whether I would ever win a singles title. Now, another chance has come and I don't intend to let it pass by. I'm looking forward to a great match with Althea," Schnyder finished.

iPatty. Aug 13th, 2006, 01:40 AM Patty Schnyder Charges Past Gibson To Capture First LTT Title
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/zurich0227.jpg
"Game, Set, and Match, Mrs. Schnyder," rang Sandra de Jenkin. The Swiss woman fell to her knees and covered her face as tears of utter joy and celebration fell down her face. Patty Schnyder had done what she wanted to do: won a title, finally.
"Excuse me -- just a few more tissues please [laughter] -- okay, I'm ready. Yeah, it was a great match. I got really, really nervous near the end. I mean, I lost my previous finals in three sets, so I wanted to get the second set over with. I was down for pretty much the entire match. Down 3-0 in the second set, but I stayed calm and fought back beautifully. I was down 5-4 and 6-5, serving, in both sets, so it makes me feel good that I can hold my serve in pressure situations. She can really chip and charge well, so it was important for me to serve well. I think I did that well all week," an elated Schnyder said.
The win over Gibson marked her fourth consecutive top ten win of the tournament. Previous wins included Dementieva, Maleeva, and Davenport. Surprisingly, the only set lost came in the second round against Aiko Nakamura.
"Yeah, it was really a dream week. I beat so many good players, it's amazing. I was down and out in the second round, but I fought back. I fought well all week, which gives me so much confidence for the U.S. Open. I had a 5-0 record in tiebreakers this week, so my mental strength has really been the difference this week. I didn't give away many free points, so that pleases me. I could go on for hours, but I need to keep this short [laughter]. There's a party tonight," Schnyder concluded.
Patty Schnyder will re-enter the top ten with this victory, maybe stealing the seventh spot. She looks to move even further with a good result next week at the U.S. Open, where she will enter as a favorite.
