*Jool* Jul 31st, 2006, 08:49 AM OMG, Jeyaseelan vs Dubois in round 1, in their home country :fiery: VERY bad luck
be positive : unlike last year , one Canadian will be in the second round
*Jool* Jul 31st, 2006, 09:12 AM  WHO WILL WIN ?
http://www.multisport.qc.ca/app/ImageRepository/1/20050704DuboisStephanie.gif vs http://www.canoe.ca/2000GamesTennisImages/jeyaseelan_sep20.jpg
The first round of the Canadian Cup held in Vancouver will be a crowd 's favorite as the two Canadian player of the tour will meet for the second time. The thoughts about this match are varied , Stéphanie Dubois , angry, citing bad luck, and Sonya Jeyaseelan, seeded 8 , saying "it will be an exciting match, it's good one of us will be in round two, we both lost first round last year and were very sad not to play more in front of our crowd. One of us will have this luck this year , and I'm sure she'll have the support of the other one despite the loss."
Jeyaseelan , like last year , is hoping to bounce back in Vancouver after a disappointing result in Miami . But she was not lucky last season, as she was knocked out first round by eventual runner-up Iveta Benesova of Czech Republic. Always very excited about playing for her country like in Fed Cup , or in front of her crowd, family and friends , Jeyaseelan has high hopes for this tournament, after a so-so season in which she showed her best (final in Beijing, semi final in Kooyong, 2 quarterfinals) , her average (4 round of 16) and her worst (4 early exits ) . "I'm willing to do good here . I need to boost my confidence. I 've had good results at the beginning of the season, then came the clay :help: and i kinda regrouped on grass. But I lost early in Miami. In parallel to my bad losses in singles, I played better and better in doubles, I am now willing to find some balance between the two , and have good results in both events. Hopefully I can have in Vancouver the dream run I had once in Antwerp. We never know what can happen. I am not one of the favorites, but a quarterfinal would already do me good , mentally. I'm feeling pretty good despite that loss in Miami. My lover will be here, my father won't , unlike last year, which stressed me a lot , i am more relaxed thinking he won't be here, he used to be very harsh on me when he coached me, I am now a happier person making my own choices and decisions. "
Jeyaseelan and Fed Cup partner Dubois met in Beijing , where Jeyaseelan won 76(0) 76(5) . It will be their second meeting and Dubois will be hoping to level their head-to-head , and cetainly has the weapons to do so after a much better season than last year, she found new confidence in her game an disn't afraid anymore of the top players.
In this section of the draw are second seeded Lindsay Davenport, Wimbleodn champion Kirsten Flipkens , and former world number 1 Martina Hingis, it's a very tough draw for both Canadians.

-sugi- Jul 31st, 2006, 09:28 AM Aiko In Search For Points!

Aiko Serves In a Practice Session
Imagine if you are in Aiko Nakamura's shoes, #21 in the world Aiko is desperately in search for ranking points after making the Wimbledon Quarter Final. But last year, Aiko's made a US Open Quarter Final, so if Aiko fails to defend them, her ranking will plummet down and she will have to play the lower tiers. Aiko's draw is a tough one. In round one, she faces the German Groenefeld. The pair have never met before. And if Aiko is to win, she will most likely face the Belgian world number 1 - Kim Clijsters. We spoke to Aiko :wavey:
"I don't really mind if I lose here and if my ranking does fall low and I have to play lower tiers, I probably have a better chance of playing well. If I lose, I know I tried my best so it doesn't really matter. But I would like to keep playing doubles with my friend Dinara who is ranked high enough to play the higher tiers so I am going to try very hard and fight my hardest. But if I do fall back and fail to get some points before US Open and in the US Open, I will then be able to play better and I feel as though I have weight of my shoulders untill my Wimbledon quarter final appearance. But it also doesn't really matter because the tour rarely splits into two tournaments a week. I look forward to playing Anna-Lena. I don't know her well or her game, but I know she has been ranked quite high."

1 year on - At US Open, Aiko had a suprise run to the quarter finals and upsetted the likes of Lindsay Davenport along the way in Aiko's debut LTT Tournament.

Yasmine Aug 1st, 2006, 08:59 AM Flipkens to face R.Kuti-Kis in round one in Vancouver
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/yeljai/flipper05.jpg
For the first time in her LTT career Kirsten Flipkens is ranked high enough to enter the highest tier tournament on tour. Her recent good performances including the Wimbledon title and Fed Cup allowed her to be ranked #11 and #6 in the Race. She will face R.Kuti-Kis from Hungary in the first round. The last encounter between the two ladies happened in the Fed Cup semi final where the hungarian prevailed.
Kirsten's opponent in the Wimbledon final was Marta Domachowska from Poland but the two young ladies are this time playing as a doubles team hoping to go far in the draw.

aisha Aug 1st, 2006, 11:22 PM http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/577/21238447965pierce.jpg
Recent Miami semifinalist Mary Pierce has been awarded a Wild Card entry into this season's Canadian Cup. Pierce, who lost to eventual champion Ksenia Palkina, is looking to extend her hot form into a title.
Pierce is also scheduled to play doubles with India's Sania Mirza. Her first round match is a difficult one. She's scheduled to play defending champion Ana Ivanovic in the first round.
Says Pierce, "I'm feeling pretty good about what I'm doing now. Although, I kind of tweaked an abductor in my quarterfinal match last week. All I can do is rest it. I should be okay."

*Jool* Aug 2nd, 2006, 12:35 PM A "mise-au-point" with Sonya Jeyaseelan
Sonya Jeyaseelan , the world number 8 , is having particularly difficult times on tour. The Canadian lost today a third match in a row for the first time in her career , losing to fellow Canadian Stéphanie Dubois , and hence losing in some way her status of best Canadian player on tour right now. She was interviewed after the match and answered the journalists with honesty and maturity. Here's the transcript of her interview.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/JeyaseelanSonyaA.jpg
Q: Sonya, I guess it's a tough loss- you were close to win, in a particular atmosphere since it was the first time two Canadian players met in front of their crowd... How do you feel right now ?
S.J. : This is exactly the kind of losses that could have make me feel mad a few months ago, when I was starting to play better , and was very disappointed to lose close matches like that. I feel different now. My game hasn't been really on for a long time now . And I'm getting used again to losses. There's not much to say . I'm just happy for Steph, she fought harder than I did, she deserved to win, and , well, I feel devastated because this is THE tournament for me , and it seems I play my worst tennis in the more important moments: at home, against friends ... I guess my emotionnal problems are far from being resolved.
Q: You came very close to the win . What happened ?
S.J. : I lost my nerves once again and Steph had nothing to lose when she was down 76 54 . She just totally dominated the end of the match , once the second set was over , I knew I'd lose because i didn't have the gutts for more, she was in a momentum and unless she crumbled like I did in the second set , there was no reason why she would lose it , the audience was after her since she was changing the court of the match, everyone was very exciting , and I played poor tennsi in the third. No legs, no heart , I mean , I tried, but all went too fast , and she played too good . I was overwhelmed . I left the match and never had the opportunity to come back in action as I wish I would.
Q: What are your goals for the upcoming weeks ?
S.J. : I don't have any , I wish I was buried six feet under right now. I will skip California and come back at the US Open. I will probably leave the top 10 for the first time in a long while , but I need a break to come back more motivated, and hopefully stronger .
Q: So , you won't be in California ?
S.J. : No , I won't . I'm in a slump , I can't play decent tennis except on grass it seems . I apologize to Maggie , but I seriously need to think about other things.
Q: Concerning Maleeva and doubles , I guess you are still going to play doubles here ?
S.J. : Of course, it's my last chance to win a match here , and I will try to be competitive in doubles.Maggie is a great support , and she will help me to react , but that won't change the fact that I need a break from singles and am really not willing to travel to California to lose early again . I hope we'll have a good run, but our first round will be the toughest since right now, I lack the confidence that could help me winning matches. But we make a good team and I'm sure having her next to me will be a force to recover my motivation .We never know. Maybe tomorrow I will be transcended and play a great match in doubles. I have more fun playing doubles right now , it's a team thing , you know, like a booster to have someone with you . Alone, it seems I can't handle it anymore, I feel kinda lost on court if things start to be harder than expected, like today .
Q: Weird that you keep being friends with players who can't stop beating you. I think you're 0/2 or 0/3 to Maggie, same goes with Gibson, Flipkens , etc ...
S.J. Tennis is only a game . I don't see the point of losing friends because I have to play against them. We were friends before entering the tour. I was already playing before those three joined the tour. They progressed quicker than me and have become good players now, it's tough to play them , they all have different styles of games, and as I already said more than once, I still have lots of emotionnal problems. I'm not a killer . I guess that's why I will probably never be the player I wish I was. Number 1.
Q: Are you telling us one of your goals was to become number 1 in the world ?
S.J. : I never planned such a thing. But when you start to play good, when you're in a momentum where everything seems to smile at you, when you play three finals out of 4 tournaments , including your first title and a final at the YEC , you obviously set higher goals for yourself. I never said : I wanna be number 1. But obviously , I dreamt about that once or twice . Tennis is cruel , because you can be at the top for some time like I was for like two months, and then you can all of a sudden be in a slump and never get up again.
Q: Thanks for answering our questions Sonya and best of luck for the future.
S.J. Thank you, I will definitelmy need luck to get back on track .

Ceze Aug 2nd, 2006, 06:16 PM Maggie into second round
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/001.jpg
World No. 4 Madgalena Maleeva defeated Viktoria Azarenka in the 1st round at Vancouver, in Canada, in 3 sets 76(0) 16 64. Next opponent is Vera Dushevina, a player she beat in the second round at Miami last week, but who defeated her on grass at Birmingham one month ago.
"It was not easy, Vicky played very solid in the 2 first sets, especially in the second set. She made almost no errors in that set. I was lucky that she began being tired in the 3rd set. She is still young, but you know she's a very promising player. You know, I should be careful against players like her, or like Vera, in my next match. Vera is also a young successful player, who defeated me some weeks ago. But I beat her last week in that stage. I hope I'll be able to do it this time again."
Asking about Sonya's withdrawal from California next week, Maggie told us her feeling: "you know, it's not easy for Sonya, she was playing at home, she really wanted to do well here, but she lost in the first round, after an epic match. So of course she is very disappointed. And as a result, she lacks self-confidence. But I'd like to tell her that she's a very good player, one of the best players of the world, maybe the only nemesis for Kim, and I'm sure that good results will come back, I have no doubts about it. And the tournament is not over yet, there still are the doubles matches too. I'm very glad she might reconsider playing doubles with me next week in California because we do very well in doubles together, I think we are #3 in the race you know. But even if she doesn't play, I want her to know that I respect her decision."
TomTennis Aug 2nd, 2006, 07:57 PM Davenport into Second Round; Talks about Ivanovic
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20040729/images/2004-07-29s_davenport.jpg
Davenport is determind to do well to get closer to the world number 1 ranking
Second seeded Lindsay Davenport moved into the second round of the Canadian Open after dismissing high profiled Sania Mirza in straight sets. The youngster has been reaching a lot of attention from the Indian press, and is highly regarded on the WTATour for coming from her background to become a well-known player.
After seeing the draw, Mirza started with her "trash-talking" towards the American, however Davenport powered past Mirza in front of her home crowd, not letting the Indian into the match with a 7-5 6-4. She is next faced against Hungarian Kuti-Kis in the next round.
After her routine win, Davenport talked to the press.
Q. Lindsay, after hearing in the press that she had said "your going out", how satisfying is this win?
Davenport. "Erm you know, it is really good. I always felt like I was going to win. She is a talented player and a fun one too, she was really getting the crowd going with some of her shots, but I just used my experience to advance into the next round".
Q. So after beating her, do you ahve anything to say yo her?
Davenport. "No really. Im sure she is looking forward to a rematch. Im just not one of those players that trash talk to each other. When we next meet, Im sure it will be interesting though".
Q. You say you dont like to talk about players like that, but what about the current state with Ivanovic? You have been reported saying that she is just "flaking out" ?
Davenport. "There is one thing trash-talking among players, but there is a whole different thing in just telling it how it is. You know, its just like when Myskina retired. She cant handle losing. A lot of the top players have been taking it hard this season, because the competition is so much tougher. I mean look at me, I havent won a title all season, and just because she is going through a slump now she is packing it in. She doesnt have the mental attitude of what it takes to be a great player."
Q. She has said that her official reason for retirement is because she has a back injury
Davenport. "Oh come on. Im sorry but Im not stupid. All the players have seen her in the locker rooms etc. She is fine. There is no injury. She might have a litlle pain there, Im not saying she is a lyer, but all of a sudden when she does win, the back injury somehow magically dissapeers if you know what I mean".
Q. You talked about how you feel this is the same as Myskina's retirement. What did you mean by that?
Davenport. "She cant take it. Myskina was a great player with so much success, but she had to be winning all the time, and she wasnt because there are so many good players out there. This is like Ivanovic. Just beacuse she isnt doing as well as last season she is quitting. I mean look at Hingis. She is one of the all time greats but is currently stuck outside the top 20, barely winning. There is no excuse for Ana quitting, she just cant take losing".
Q. She has had some great career moments though, and she was defending champion here. After losing your Wimbledon trophy 2 weeks ago ?
Davenport. "Not really. I lost my greated career win, but it goes down in histroy, and then I think there is always next week. Ana and Myskina cant think like that, and I really feel sorry for them".
Q. You have no sympathy for them at all? Are you going to say goodbye to Ana?
Davenport. "Of course I will, Im not heartless. She has been a great player, and it is a shame to see anyone leave, but that doenst mean I will hold back on my opinions".
Q. So what will Ana be remembered for in your eyes?
Davenport. "A player that couldnt take the heat when things got hard. She has had some great acomplishments. Reaching number 3 in the world and winning some great titles, but just like Myskina, there will always be an asterix next to her name in the history books saying she flaked out and couldnt take it. In my eyes they a great players, and people, but will never go down as two of the greats because of their tainted exit."
Q. So what are you looking for in Canada this week?
Davenport. "Well to be honest, a title. I havent won one since last season in Moscow, I am really eager to do well this hardcourt season. Im really looking forward to the US Open, but I just want to take things one match at a time, as I should do, because then I will hopefully keep my concentration."
Q. What do you think about Hingis' current state?
Davenport. "She is a great player, I know that because we play doubles and have won 3 titles this season already, including a Grand Slam. She is really training hard for the US open and I know she wil be a major threat. Its like there is just me, Kim, and Martina left from season 1. Im sure there are a lot of yougner players keeen to make their mark on the LTT tour, like Farina-Elia in Paris, or Flipkens in London. Things might be changing with Ana, Myskina and Mauresmo retiring, but they are changing for the good I think. We will certainly see."

Europe rocks Aug 2nd, 2006, 09:50 PM Russian wildcard shocks Domachowska
http://boxmail.biz/constructor/img/91894.jpg
Lina Krasnoroutskaya, fresh off a run to the quarterfinals of the American Express Challenge in Miami, continued her good fortunes in Vancouver as she eventually disposed of Poland’s Marta Domachowska 2-6 7-5 6-4.
Domachowska, who reached the Wimbledon final, dominated the first set, breaking the Russian’s serve four times. However, the Pole struggled on her own serve, being broken twice and saving several break points as Krasnoroutskaya failed to capitalise on the unforced errors coming from her opponent.
The second set followed a similar pattern as Domachowska took an early break of serve to lead. Later on in the set Domachowska served for the match at 5-3, but gave it away with four basic errors and from then on her game collapsed and Krasnoroutskaya finally served out the second set 7-5 to take it into a deciding set.
Both players were holding serve comfortably in a nervy final set, with several netted returns and errors. The most important game of the set came when Domachowska was serving at 3-3. She was up 40-0 on her own serve when her game collapsed once again. In a lengthy rally Domachowska hit a forehand that just clipped the edge of the singles tramline and she thought was a winner. However, Krasnoroutskaya ripped a backhand crosscourt which just caught the tramline. Domachowska believed that the ball was out and appealed feverishly with the umpire. It unsettled her as she then delivered three double faults and a wide backhand to give Krasnoroutskaya the break. The Russian then held her nerve to serve out for victory and book a place in the second round against Jennifer Capriati.
“That was so tough. I didn’t hold serve at all in the first set, so in the second that was my main objective. All I told myself was ‘hold serve, then apply the pressure’. I’ve been playing well since I arrived here in North America, I’m just so pleased. Vera [Dushevina] said I was going to get a breakthrough soon, hopefully this will be it.”

TF Chipmunk Aug 2nd, 2006, 11:51 PM Anna-Lena Gets Another Win
http://www.tribuneindia.com/2006/20060101/sp3.jpg
Anna-Lena gave all the effort she could in her 7-6 6-7 6-4 first round win.
Vancouver, Canada - Anna-Lena Groenefeld has had a tough stretch after reaching a career high #18 on the rankings earlier this season. Since then, however, the German has struggled greatly to win two matches in a row. However, something above seems to be telling her she could be in for a good stretch now.
The German has worked hard on her fitness lately, as was shown in her gritty three-set victory that lasted well over 3 hours against Nakamura of Japan.
"As I started winning more matches, I sort of got lazy," admitted Groenefeld. "However, I realized that that was the weakness in my game, and I've been improving that aspect."
Her game was still on, but lack of match play -- attributed to losing early week-in and week-out -- was clear as she hit more unforced errors than winners. She looks to change that though.
"I don't know, I just feel like I'm getting better," she said. "I just feel like, if this week isn't the week for me, then maybe next week will be."
The German next faces world #1 Kim Clijsters. She has a 1-0 head-to-head advantage over arguably the best player in LTT history.
"It will be a tough match for sure. Kim's just spectacular out there," she said. "I hope it'll be fun and exciting."
aisha Aug 3rd, 2006, 12:44 AM http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/577/0122.jpg
French wild card Mary Pierce lived up to her 'dangerous floater' tag as she upset defending champ Ana Ivanovic 7-6(0), 7-6(4) in the opening round. Pierce fired 13 aces and a barrage of winners (38) past the Ivanovic, who later announced her retirement after the match. Ivanovic cited she had lost her passion for the tour due to lackluster results.
Pierce next faces new Roland Garros champ, no. 3 seed Silvia Farina Elia for the privilege of a quarterfinal spot. The Italian surely will not be an easy task for Pierce, however she feel more confident about her chances on quicker courts.
"Right now, I'm feeling alright. No irritation in my leg. When I served, it came so natural for me and my movement hasn't been hindered by this injury. Ana played pretty well, actually. It's too bad she's decided to hang them up so soon. She was in the top 10 wasn't she? She can come back. I hope she reconsiders."
"Silvia is looking to recapture her clay court form. She's a tricky player to face. She uses the slice so well...doesn't hit the ball that hard, but is strikingly accurate. My point is to dictate on the first ball. Otherwise, it will be a difficult day for me. Hopefully, doubles will help combat what she will throw at me."

new-york Aug 3rd, 2006, 10:21 AM Gibson prevails in tiebreaks after a beatdown in the first set, in both doubles & singles.

Q- Dinara & you spent the day together.
A.G- laughter.Yeah, too bad it wasn't to share some recipes.
Strange day, good day. two wins is good and i'm reaching quarterfinals.
i haven't been able to reach a third round in a while, so that's something.
Q- Scorelines identical in doubles & singles.
A.G- We lost the first set in doubles & Tati just looked at me like "Gib, it's over." I smiled & told her. She smiled with me after we won the second set with 7-6 (3) like in singles. i knew it was possible since i did that in singles. Tati was on fire in the last tiebreaks, i was tired but she was all around the court.
Q- Next Opponent is Mary Pierce, again.
A.G- Don't have any hopes for this one. I told you she was tough from the beggining. That was close in Miami with one break by set, but she's playing even better. She was hitting ferociously against Silvia, a lot of winners. So, mmm i don't know.
I can't wait for the doubles, we'll meet KsenKsen & LenaD. That will be a good match.
Q- You says "grass is your fav surface" but i think hard is, cause it seems that you're hitting better with higher bounces.
A.G- I'm definitely playin better on fast surfaces, now yeah, i felt like the bounce her lower this year on grass, didn't adjust well. Fast hardcourts are easier for me but i love to play on grass too. I don't know. I give you the edge.
Q- Well thank you.
A.G- Well, you were one of those who still has good words about me when i'm bad.
Q- Since i'm that kind, could you....
A.G- Coconut, Mango. Cake ready tommorow.
Q- My thoughts, thank you & good luck.
A.G- Well, i think after the match, i'll have some time if i don't have to prepare for the next day singles so, maybe i'll eat it with wou.

Ballbasher Aug 3rd, 2006, 09:09 PM Ksenia stands pressure and reaches quarters in Vancouver
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/451/kpalkina1sb.jpg (http://imageshack.us/?x=my6&myref=http://imageshack.us/)
Last week Ksenia Palkina overcame a terrible slump and won the title in Miami, this week she arrived in Vancouver, where she has semi finals to defend. She started nervously going down 3-6 0-3 in her first round against Schiavone, but then she woke up,played better and won the match 3-6 6-4 6-3.Her secound rund match was even tighter. In an match, which lasted nearly four hours, she beat Alicia Molik 7-6(3) 5-7 7-5.In Doubles Elena and Ksenia ousted the 4th seeded team Bovina/Kuznetsova in three sets 4-6 6-2 6-4.In Singles her oppenent will be Belgian world #1 Kim Clijsters.Elena and Ksenia will meet last week's winner Golvin/Gibson.
"I'm fucking happy that I was able to continue my winning ways and almost defended all points. You know,my match against Alicia was so tough,Alicia is a great player and I had to play great tennis to beat her.It was even tougher for me as I believed I'd play one of my best friends on tour,Tatiana Golovin,I could beat her here last year in first round,in a match where I saved MPs.In quarters I'll meet another good friend Kim Clijsters, she has always beaten me in two matches, once in Antwerp last year 7-6 4-6 6-4 and the YEC 7-5 7-5 7-6.But be aware Kim I beat the top seed also last year in Vancouver in straight sets :p .In Doubles Elena and I were surprised by our nice result and now I still have to face Tati in DOubles with her amazing partner Athea.Love you girls :hearts:.Well I think it might be even tougher to beat them, but I'll try my best in both matches of course."

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/4082/waitinvw2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Althea Gibson lost her second consecutive quarterfinal match to Mary Pierce of France. This time she took the middle set, but still lost (3)6-7 6-3 5-7.
"It was tough. i was really angry to lose the tiebreak winning only three points. I played really solid in the second, i returned well, that was the key.
In Miami, she won the crucial breaks of both sets, and here, she broke at the right time 5-5, 1 set all. I'm a lilttle frustrated as i had my chances, but i'm happy to play better than after the AO, was really hard."
She advanced with Tatiana Golovin in the semifinals defeating 6-4 6-4 good friends and Miami single finalists Ksenia Palkina & Elena Dementieva.
"Really a fun match, you would not think it was a pro match. Good quality, but no tension. We really felt good with Tatiana, together. Kim & Angie will be tough as hell, but we are definitely willing to be competitive.

A stoked Mary Pierce reacts after advancing to the semifinals.
VANCOUVER, British Colombia
Unseeded Mary Pierce once again validated her wildcard entry into this tournament of elite players. The dangerous Frenchwoman followed up her straight set dismantling of no. 3 and Roland Garros champion Slivia Farina Elia. Pierce edged American Althea Gibson 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-5 in a rematch of last week's quarterfinal.
Gibson fell to Pierce in straight sets then, but today was ready to combat the Frenchwoman's power. Gibson, hell bent on revenge, aimed most volleys in the direction of Pierce when she had the chance.
However, the underdog let it be known she wouldn't be intimidated, blowing thunderous passing shots by the net-rushing American.
Both players held throughout the first set, but it was Pierce overpowering her way to a 6-0 tie-breaker lead, ultimately yielding only three points. Gibson's net game became more aggressive in the second, taking time away from Pierce and exploiting her average court coverage. Despite four straight breaks of serve, the quality of the match remained high. However, it was Pierce who managed to earn that break for the match, doing so with her powerful return game.
Later on, Pierce teamed up with India's Sania Mirza to win their doubles qf over Russian pair Vera Dushevina and Lina Krasnoroutskay 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
Pierce has defeated the #2 and #3 players in the world the last two weeks. Her next opponent is world no. 1 Kim Clijsters, whom she has never faced.
"I can't believe I'm in my second straight semifinal. I wasn't too sure I could follow last week with another great week. At least not in a strong field like this. But, I feel like a different player since Fed Cup. I feel I'm playing smarter tennis and maybe being a mother has taught me patience. I'm more meticulous out there and so relaxed. The Fed Cup experience carries so much pressure, particularly in France. I cannot tell you how many angry phone calls I got after that loss. I have two children, you'd think I'd get a break. (sigh) See, I get angry just thinking about it....Anyways, it feels good to prove last week was no fluke. I can play with the elite players. Kim is still the Queen Bee in my eyes. She's so solid. She doesn't really suffer any bad losses. Not to mention she get to every shot, which is my weakness. But you know what? I'm feeling a little confident that I can win this."

Yasmine Aug 4th, 2006, 10:31 AM Marta Domachowska and Kirsten Flipkens into Semi Finals
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/yeljai/montagemartaflippercopie.jpg
The two raising players have teamed up for the first time in the tier 2 tournament in Vancouver. Kirsten was ranked high enough to play the higher tier this week as doubles partner Ting Li is playing in Las Vegas. They defeated in the first round the pair seeded 2 L.Davenport/M.Hingis 6-3 5-7 6-3 and then A.L.Groenefeld/P.Schnyder 6-4 6-7(8) 6-3 to earn their ticket to the Semi Finals where they will face S.Mirza/M.Pierce.
"Kirsten was going to pull out doubles this week. But I asked her to play with me, She changed her mind you know and now we're enjoying it." commented Marta. "I'm glad I'm playing, I feel no pressure and just want to have fun on court." added Kirsten.

http://www.nctimes.com/content/articles/2003/07/30/sports/professional/7_30_036_15_17.jpg
[2] L.Davenport (USA) def. S.Dubois 6-4 6-4
World Number 2 Lindsay Davenport moved into the semi-finals of the Canadian Cup after taking down home-favourite Stephanie Dubois 6-4 6-4. Davenport had played agasint the Canadian twice before, winning both, and one by excatly the same scoreline. "Yeh its very inetersting. She is a great player, but she just hits the type of ball that I am so comfortable with. You know, I have won 6-4 6-4 against her before, and out other match I won 4-6 6-4 6-4, so things seem to be developing a pattern."
The second seed, who is looking to improve on her hardcourt run from last season, takes on unseeded American Jennifer Capriati for a spot in the final. Capriati took down 4th seeded Maleeva 6-4 6-4 in the quater-finals. "She isa definetly a player to watch out for, particualarly at the US Open later, in front of the home crowd. She beat Kim last week, so I definetly have my work cut out".
It seems the top two seeds have a difficult time on their hands if they wish to set up their eigth meeting for sundays final, as Clijsters takes on wild card Mary Pierce, who deafted Lindsay Davenport last week and is now appearig in her second consecutive semi-final. "Pierce is a great player. It seems the tables have turned this week. Last week Pierce played me and Capriati played Kim, but now its the other way around, and I know that we both want revenge for those losses. Tomorrow's matches are going to be very fun im guessing."

aisha Aug 5th, 2006, 07:02 AM 'Scary Mary' Takes Down Clijsters
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/577/0241.jpg
VANCOUVER, British Colombia
Giant Killer Mary Pierce struck again! This time the Frenchwoman toppled the biggest of them all, no. 1 Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-6(4) in a dynamic display.
Pierce's aggressive game was a tad too much for the reliable Clijsters. From the start, Pierce dictated much of the action denying Clijsters to prolong the rallies. After grabbing the early break, Pierce held on to it, serving at 72% including hitting five aces in the first.
However, in the second the Belgian settled into her game, finally able to bait Pierce into long exchanges. Clijsters eventually held a 4-2 lead, but Pierce was not to be denied, breaking Clijsters to love. Both players held throughout the second, both players hitting clutch serves in fighting off multiple break points. Clijsters denied Pierce two match points at 5-6, with an ace and a forehand passing shot.
It was anybody's match until Pierce quickly darted out to a 4-0 lead behind four smoking hot returns. Clijsters, ever the fighter, closed to gap to 4-3. Unfazed, Pierce won her two service points, keeping the Belgian off balance with her heavy groundstrokes. Two points later, Pierce claimed the biggest win of her career.
Tomorrow Pierce engages in another re-match, this time with no. 2 seed Lindsay Davenport. Pierce defeated the American in the second round of the American Express Challenge. However confident she may feel, the underdog is wary of rematches.
"These two weeks have been amazing! The amount of player support I've received is overwhelming. To beat Kim is like, wow! Did I do that? She's like the most consistent player, and I'm floored at this win. Lindsay's a great player, and she's going to come out firing. That's what I expect to happen. I've played her twice and it's gone three sets each time. I'm going to just go out there and try to have fun. Ahem, but I do want to win!"
Pierce later teamed with Sania Mirza for their doubles semifinal match. Unfortunatly, they lost to Marta Domachowska/Kirsten Flipkens 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
"I kind of ran out of gas. Sania's a blast! She couldn't hold, I couldn't hold. I like playing with her. She's very active and demonstrative on court. "

*picture of Althea sitting on Tatiana with a speed(er) censored*
Althea Gibson and Tatiana Golovin finally won their first tournament last week, leading the american summer tour in doubles. And they keep on rocking. The rumours has it that Tatiana has tried to speed up her feet a bit, and that Althea is driving her around on the practise court (on Tatis request) so they can keep up their good form.

Althea ready to drive
The couple just took out their double-deamons, who they usually lose to, Kim C and Angel H. The match was great, 6-3 5-7 6-3 was the result of a match where the audience could actually see Tati and Althea do the "wheelbarrow".
They are now heading towards their second consecutive doubles title and will in the final meet Magda D and Kirsten F. Especially Kirsten is a near friend to Altati.

aisha Aug 6th, 2006, 05:33 AM Pierce Captures First Title

Mary Pierce makes good on her wildcard entry.
VANCOUVER, British Colombia
Who saw this coming? Fresh off her semifinal appearance in Miami, Mary Pierce was granted a wildcard entry into this week's Canadian Open. The previously unheralded Frenchwoman took full advantage, accomplishing it the hard way by defeating top 3 ranked players en route to her first title. 'Scary Mary' is for real.
Previously, Pierce had a mediocre season. She made an occasional quarterfinal appearance, but either erratic play or nerves seemed to populate those occasions. However, she did show brilliant flashes in s-Hertogenbosch, where she lost in straight set tie-breaks to Vera Dushevina in the final.
She endured one of the most painful losses in her short career, when Pierce failed to secure the Fed Cup semifinal, losing to Swiss Patty Schnyder in the decideing match.
Ever since her Fed Cup loss, Pierce has become a different player. A more focused and relaxed player emerged. Last week, she survived a grueling 2 1/2 hour match against no. 2 Lindsay Davenport. Eventually, she rode the momentum of that match to the semifinals - again losing a tough three setter.
This week, Pierce has played with some purpose and some attitude. Davenport again was the obstacle. And from the start, it looked as if Davenport would run away with the first set, quickly building to a 3-0 lead.
But Pierce calmly rallied back, putting as much interest on her shots as the American powerhouse. It didn't seem to matter how much trouble she looked to be in, Pierce didn't let the occasion bother her. Down 5-6, 0-30, she rattled off a series of crazy winners to dig out of trouble. But Pierce wasn't done, she kept Davenport off kilter, running the lanky American ragged in capturing the first set.
However, Davenport quickly galloped to a 4-0 second set lead behind blistering serves and groundstrokes. Pierce managed to narrow the 1-5 deficit to 4-5. However, Davenport shut the door by serving it out at love.
Despite blowing an early break lead, Pierce stayed with Davenport. Both ladies easily held and engaged in high quality shotmaking in the third. After a comfortable service game, Pierce secured the match with three straight winners. After Davenport hit an ace, on the next point Pierce hit a strong forehand, to which Davenport netted. Pierce dropped her racket and raised her arms in the air.

Pierce holds baby no. 3?
"What I feel right now is a bit euphoric. Not quite like the day my babies were born, but in a way similar. What an amazing week this has been. Lindsay. What can I say? She's a fighter, we always go three sets. It's tough because we're like similar players on the court. I congratulate her on a great tournament. Honestly, I feel like I've truly earned this title and I genuinely appreciate it more. Success wasn't instantaneous, it's something I've had to work at and it paid off this week. I'm at a loss for words to describe these past two weeks. Before that, I don't think I ever had a top five win...and I beat the top three ranked players. That hasn't sunk in yet. For now, I'm going to savor this one for all it's worth. This is one is sweet, yeah. I'm very hopeful that I can hold another trophy like this again."
