Svetlana Kuznetsova, winner of Canberra two weeks ago, will be the top seed for the 1st tier I event of the season at Sydney, Australia, just one week before the Australian Open. Last week at Gold Coast she lost in the semifinals to Kim Clijsters, the eventual champion.

"I think I'm ready for this tournament, I learnt from my defeat last week. Kim played very well, and it was a good thing for me to lose for the 1st time on the Tour. Of course it will happen again in the future, but each time I will try to take it as a chance to improve my own game," she said at the press conference. "We will see if these changes are good or not. I just hope I will be able to pass some rounds here. It will be a good preparation for the Australian Open next week" she added.

As the top seed for this tournament, Svetlana received a bye for the 1st round, and next will meet either Nicole Vaidisova or Venus Williams in the second round.

Hantuchova Moves On

Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia has moved on to the second round of the tournament in Sydney after posting a 1-6,6-0,6-3 come from behind victory over Szvetana Pironkova.It was a very weirde match that saw a lot of errors and glimpes of stardom.Both players seemed to be very streaky,although Hantchova handled it better.

"Yeah,um I feel like in the first set,I just wasn't doing anything to hurt her,and so when we begin the second set,I just told myself to really be more aggressive and get to net,and then from there the match really just went my way."

Hantuchova will next play the number 4 seed Radwanska from Poland.

'Today was a battle. Monique is a solid player but I had a poor tournament last week but practised a lot and sorted out my game a little bit. I played another poor second set but managed to sort it out in the final set with some powerful tennis and now have to prepare to face Nicole because she played an amazing match with Sveta and will be tough to beat'

World n°1 Svetlana Kuznetsova loses in the second round at Sydney against Nicole Vaidisova, in 3 sets 6-7 7-5 7-5. It was her first match in this tournament since the top seed received a bye in the first round.

"I'm very disappointed. I don't know what happened, I have no explanation at the moment", she said in a postmatch interview. "Yeah, Nicole played really well, and when I lost the second set, I was trying hard but I was unable to reverse the tendency. Today she played better than me, she deserves all the credit."

Once again, Martina has won a match with the score of 6-0 0-6 6-0. Hingis can't seem to find her concentration and it has hurt her in the later rounds, but in the early rounds she is unstopable. Today's victim, the Bitch Belgian, Justine Henin-Hardenne. It was all Hingis in the first set as she moved the Belgian all over the court and was in full control of every point. Hingis dropped just 7 points in the first set taking it at love. Justine came out hitting winner after winner in the second set, as Hingis' footwork was horrible. Hingis feet were never on her toes and she was flat footed and lost the second set at love. Hingis found her footwork and just like the first set she dominated every point, this time losing just 4 as she bageled her way into the quarterfinals.

She has 150 points, if not you would have beat her :)thanks :hug:

I loved how Martina called Justine :haha: :tape:

If Martina reaches semis she would become world number one :eek:

A Couple Of Breadsticks And A Bagel

Only one bagel for Hingis today, but Martina was fine with a breadstick. Martina is one of the most consistent players on the WFTC tour, reaching the quarterfinals in the first tournament, finalist last week, and now at least a semifinalist in Sydney. Martina took out Russian, Anastassia Rodionova for a spot in the semifinals and to become the new number one. Hingis looked like she would get her third bagel of the tournament in the first set as she went up 5-0, but Rodionova was able to get a game with a lucky netcord. Hingis maintained her focus in the next game taking it at love to take the first set 6-1. Rodionova went on into the second set with a 4-0 lead with Hingis able to get a game after a long deuce, but seemed like that game tired her out as she dropped the next two games losing the second set 6-1. In the third set, Hingis was very hungry and she was able to get her only bagel of the match. Rodionova had a great week, but Hingis got in her way.

After Two straight QF's in her first two tournaments Tatiana told me personally she was determined to make it farther. It looks as though she will make good on her word to me as she defeated Lindsay Davenport 6-3 0-6 6-3 to advancxe to the Semi's.

When i talked to Tatiana after the match about how she played she had this to say: "Yea, today was kinda a rough day despite the win. I got off to a great first set 6-3. But all the sudden a find myself down 0-3 in the second and started cramping. I called the trainer and she gave me some special drink to get rid of them, but it was already to late for the second. The third set was just like the first with my cramps gone I dominated with my forehand. Im looking forward to my SemiFinal against Jelena Dokic and my doubles with my partner Ana Ivanovic."

3rd seeded Martina has been really impressive so far in that tournament, but Tatiana seems to be in great form too. Both ladies had 3 bagels in total in their last two matches (+1 for Tatiana in the 1st round). But Martina didn't play in the 1st round (she had a bye), so I think she'll be fresher. I guess the match will be a tough one!

Here again, two surprising ladies reach the semifinals. And we can expect a good match here too. But I give the advantage to Jelena, who had an amazing 1st round match against Amelie Mauresmo in the 1st round, winning 6-3 6-0. She is able to win in straight sets, but 6th seed Tatiana won't give up in 2nd set, and Jelena will need a 3rd set to prevail.

Martina Hingis vs Tatiana Panova
3rd seeded Martina has been really impressive so far in that tournament, but Tatiana seems to be in great form too. Both ladies had 3 bagels in total in their last two matches (+1 for Tatiana in the 1st round). But Martina didn't play in the 1st round (she had a bye), so I think she'll be fresher. I guess the match will be a tough one!

Here again, two surprising ladies reach the semifinals. And we can expect a good match here too. But I give the advantage to Jelena, who had an amazing 1st round match against Amelie Mauresmo in the 1st round, winning 6-3 6-0. She is able to win in straight sets, but 6th seed Tatiana won't give up in 2nd set, and Jelena will need a 3rd set to prevail.

In Martina Hingis' first ever tough match, she deafeated Tatiana Panova in the semifinals 6-7(10) 7-6(8) 6-0. Hingis got off to a great start in the first set rolling to a 5-3 lead, but wasn't able to convert on her opportunities and wasted a set point as Tatiana evened the set 5-5. Both players broke each others serve to get the first set into a tiebreak. Again, Hingis was a head, but Tatiana fought back and won it in a thrilling 12-10 tiebreak. In the second set, both players were even the entire set and that set went to a tiebreak that Hingis won saving two match points 10-8. Tatiana was just not in any shape to play a third set and Hingis took full advantage winning the third set losing just 5 points, four of them were double faults. Martina will next face Jelena Dokic. Both players are looking for their very first title, but Martina has been in this position before, Jelena has not.
