8th seed and Top ranked American, Meghann Shaughnessy, lost in her round of 16 battle today. After tournament delay, Meghann defeating Jelena Dokic 64 63, one of only two straight set wins in the first round. Going into the next round, she was confident. Her opponent Monique Viele had just won her first tour match against Rodionova. Meghann started the match great she was up a set and on serve until 60 33. Then Monique ran off 12 straight points to win the second set 60 36. Meghann's confidence returned in the third set a little too late. Monique took two breaks and Meghann was down 4-0. She tried to fight her way back into the match and got to 5-5. Despite saving a match point at 5-4 and returning to form, Meghann was still unable to beat Monique and lost the match 06 63 75. Meghann is now 2-2 this season with a win both here and in Canberra. Now she looks forward to doubles with Hantuchova. Hantuchova is in the QFs of Gold Coast.

I don't care losing, but I don't think it's fair to give Kim 2 coin tosses versus 0 to Sveta in the 1st set, as if you absolutely wanted her to win :o :shrug:
And in doubles, I have serious doubts about the 6-0 in the 1st set :confused: 6-4, 6-3 or 7-5 I don't mind, but 6-0 it looks impossible seeing the points I sent :shrug:

Hingis Prevails In Topsy Turvy Match Against Jidkova

Martina Hingis, of Switzerland, defeated Russina Veteran, Alina Jidkova, in three strange sets to enter into the final 16. Martina cruised through the first set surrendering just 2 games and it looked as if Hingis would take the momentum in the second set, but Jidkova came out with her guns blazing as she hit winner after winner and there was nothing Martina could do. In the third set, Jidkova cooled off incredibly, she couldn't make a single shot in the court. The only points that Martina Hingis lost in the third set were because of 3 double faults. Hingis will next face the young Czech, Nicole Vaidisova in the round of sixteen.

For the Second straight week, Martina Hingis finds herself into the quarterfinals. Martina is becoming a consistent player, but she will need to stay focused if she wants to get farther. Martina Hingis was in full control of the match when she was up 6-0 40-0 when she got a bad call and completly self-destructed in the second set, losing 25 straight points to go down 6-0 in the second set. In tears before the first game of the second set she got her act together and played like she did in the third set and was able to get a fragmented double bagle against the beautiful Nicole Vaidisova. The sixth seed will next face Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia for a spot in the final 4.

Martina Hingis defeated Daniela Hantuchova today in 3 sets with the winner of each set winning it easily! Martina started out on top taking the first set 6-0, but lost her focus while Daniela played her best tennis and lost the second set 6-0. Martina then picked up on her game and Daniela started to make more errors as Martina won the third set easily 6-0. Final Score: 6-0 0-6 6-0, you don't see that happen much on many tours, but Martina has had 2 of them! Martina will next face an unkown in Monique Viele for a spot in the final.

Martina Hingis is into her first ever final here in Gold Coast. Martina Hingis defeated surprise semifinalist Monique Viele to book her spot. For the first time this week, Martina won a game in the second set! Martina cruised in the first set dropping just 6 points, and like all her matches, she lost a bit of focus in the second set, but this time she was able to get her first game in the second set. Like all her matches also, she was able to win the third set 6-0. It seems like Hingis only puts her focus on the first and third set ;) She will need to work on this if she wants to beat Kim Clijsters in the final.

It was Hingis who first took the lead, she was up a 3-1 serving when Clijsters broke Hingis' serve right back at love. Clijsters then held, and Martina gained the lead as she held for 4-3, since then, Clijsters only lost 1 more game. She ended the first set winning the last 3 games. Kim went up as set and 4-0 when Martina finally got on the bored, but Kim stayed focused and won the last two games to earn her the singles and doubles titles. Martina Hingis will be ranked around the top 5 once the new rankings come out.

Kim Clijsters of Belgium and Mary Pierce of France have become the first world number 1 doubles team when they won the Mondial Australian Women's Tournament in Gold Coast when they defeated Radwanska and Viele 6-0 3-6 6-1 to win their first title.

This was the first doubles tournament of the year and Kim and Mary set the tone in WFTC with a convincing win. Pierce was a semifinalist in Canberra last week and ranked 2 in the rankings and Clijsters made it a sweep this week in Gold Coast taking the singles title as well. Both girls played superb and really had great chemistry. Now they will play in Sydney and try to keep a hold on that number 1 ranking. Good luck Mary and Kim!

Kim Clijsters was largely unheralded before the start of the second tournament. The low-key Belgian experienced her breakout tournament, winning titles in both singles and doubles.



Clijsters stared down defeat against no. 1 Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semifinals, prevailing in an epic first set tie-break, before running away with the match against the no. 1. Clijsters and Frenchwoman Mary Pierce then teamed up to win their first title over Agniezska Radwanska and Monique Viele 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.



The indefatigable Belgian had enough left to take out talented Swiss Martina Hingis for the title. Clijsters' speedy defense and heavy shots overwhelmed Hingis' precision and craft in just under an hour for a 6-4, 6-1 victory.



Clijsters, whose ranking will surely climb, has secured herself as one of the favorites for the year's first Grand Slam title.
