Ceze Jun 27th, 2006, 01:28 AM An ambitious Maggie in Iceland
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/IMG_0996.jpg
Last week in Birmingham Maggie was not able to defend her points from last year, when she won the Ordina Open title. She needed to win the title at Birmingham (170 points) to save her points from Rosmalen (150 points) or at least reach the final to save face. But she failed in the quarters to Nicole Vaidisova, the eventual winner. This week in Iceland, things are different since she lost in the first round last year. She got beaten by the 15th seed Angela Haynes in 3 sets 63 46 75. But then Maggie was ranked 47, and now she is 9, and even seeded 8 this week at Reykjavik. So she is expecting more than an early exit this year. Let's amass some points Maggie! :p
Tennace Jun 27th, 2006, 02:21 AM Klara, I sent points for us :)
Same points as the ones which won Nicole Birmingham :bounce: but also the same ones which got her out in Roland Garros 1st Round :o :tape:
new-york Jun 27th, 2006, 02:43 AM This is where She Began.

Joyful Althea Gibson ready to stop her slump in Iceland where she played her first tounament of the LTT tour.
Happy, this is the best word to describe Gibson, as she walks on Reykjavik center court.
"I'm surprised, it feels so good. You're there, you have memories. I played the most beautiful match of my career here."
Remember, a new face holding a racket & battling to reach the semifinals where she lost to Ana Ivanovic, the eventual winner.
"I always tell her when i see her, i had my best matches against her, this one is even more special, i don't think i reached that level a second time, this was a terrific match, the shots were awesome."
One year after her debut, Gibson reaches the top 10.
"That's fine, just closing it. The points i have to defend here won't allow me to stay in that position but hey that's fine. I just loved when i was ranked 11 actually, i don't know why, i like this number. 9, also. i'm crazy. but i'm seeded 9, Tati gave me that. She doesn't play singles so she can rest a lil bit. She's working hard, a great girl."
Joyful, but conscious that it will take a big effort to reproduce.
"Especially the way i'm playing lately, it will be the hardest thing to get in the last rounds of this tournaments again, when i barely can reach the third rounds of all the previous tournmants i played. The draw is tough, Daniela is unpredictable, and i have losing h2h to all the girl around me, add to that an in form Dubois. But last year, i would not have worried, i was just here, trying to win, whoever i would face. I want to be like that again. No, I will be like that again."
-VSR- Jun 27th, 2006, 06:11 AM Venus Arrives Late For Central Bank Tournament
~Williams Hopes She Will Be Accepted~
http://eur.news1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/ap_photo/20060103/all/l1696543.jpg
REYKJAVIC, Iceland--- Venus Williams was a late arrival into the Central Bank of Iceland Challenge. Williams flight was delayed and she hopes she will not be penalized for her mistakes. Venus comes into this tournament with little confidence as her results have been very poor. She admits to not giving all her attention to tennis, but looks to turn things around here in Iceland.
"I know I need to concentrate more on my tennis. It has not been my number one priority, and I feel bad for even saying this. But it is true, and I need to get with it. I am slowly falling down the rankings and that is not what I want. I am hoping for a good tournament, if they accpet my lateness."
Venus Williams' first round opponent will be the Russian, Maria Sharapova. Sharapova is a great player and has been producing great results in Season 2, her first season however. Sharapova won a small tier III, the Memorial Cup, weeks ago. Impressive, this will be a tough challenge for Williams. But it will be her best chance to finally try and re-establish herself as a threat and try to climb the rankings. Venus is still looking for her first LTT Singles title. Good luck Venus Williams.

Young Russian Maria Sharapova got through to the 2nd Round with a nail-biting 7-6 6-7 7-6 win over Venus Williams in what was the most exciting and most toughly competitive matches seen on the LTT Tour ever.
"What a match that was the best tennis i could play and the best tennis she could play it was a match i will remember for a long time i fought so much in that match and cannot believe i turned it around in the 3rd set" Maria said.
With both girls serving at their best (Sharapova 19 Aces 69% First Serve, Venus 15 Aces 66% First Serve) it was no surpirse that their was no breaks in the irst 2 sets sending them to tiebreaks which both girls split 1 a piece. It wasnt until the 3rd game of the final set that Venus broke for the first time which she did twice in a row to lead 5-1 and had 3 match-points but Maria put on her fighting face and realed of 5 straight games of her own to get back on serve and take it to a tiebreak where she edged the American 7-2 and took herself into the 2nd round.
She next faces #16 Seed & Recent Birmingham champion Nicole Vaidisova

Gibson who claimed the whole clay season that she's better on grass has even worst results on grass as she failed to win a match.
"Ok, i'm done, can't win a match in my favorite surface. I don't want to arrive at Wimbledon & be a shame. I don't know. We were a few slumping player & i'm even losing the the other slumpers now. Hopefully this is the end for Daniela. Also, all my support to Ksenia, last year, we were both moved by our semifinal but now, we're getting through a lot. Darl is just exhausted and had leave for the north of France a lot, so she's tired but never write her off. I hope one of my friend wins, as we love this tournament. Good luck girls. This time i'm not staying to support. they'll understand."

*Jool* Jun 27th, 2006, 01:05 PM REYKJAVIK, Iceland. Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan loves Iceland and the tournament of Reykjavik. She already said so a few times , and she always want to perform well at this venue. The world number 7 made her first breakthrough on the Ladies tennis Tour on grass in Birmingham during her first season , coached by France's *Jool*, where she reached the semifinals defeating top players , before reaching the 3rd round of a Slam and a Tier I at Wimbledon and Reykjavik respectively, for the first time. She kept a high taste for grasscourts. Surprisingly enough, two of her best friends on tour, Maleeva and Gibson, also had their first good results on grass. The idea to play in Reykjavik again was in their minds , to prepare for Wimbledon, and to enjoy theirselves in this magnificient country.
Jeyaseelan: "Iceland is an awesome country, the landscapes are incredible, the culture is amazing ... and I'm also a fan of Björk, so I always wanted to come to Iceland. My dream came true last season when for the first time on a tennis tour, a tournament was held here, in Reykjavik."
Tennis-wise, Jeyaseelan had a stunning momentum at the end of season 1 and very beginning of season 2, reaching 3 finals out of 4 tournaments played, including a first title in Antwerp and a runner-up finish at the Year-End Championship and Beijing. But since that final lost to Hingis in China, Jeyaseelan put too much pressure on herself and was overwhelmed by the psychological aspect of tough competition. Her results declined, so did her motivation and confidence. But Jeyaseelan newly found a new philosophy, and decided to fully dedicate herself to enjoyment on court , and not to feel the pressure anymore. Results started to come back at Birmingham again, where she reached the quarter finals only for the third time this season. "I like grass , and I feel good rigth now, I have found a new interior peace and am a different player now. I try to be positive when I play."
Arived on Saturday, Sonya Jeyaseelan practiced a little before she was given the opportunity to meet Björk , one of her idol , on Sunday. They went to a restaurant and shared experiences of their respective lives."It was a charming evening, it was nice to visit Reykjavik with the best guide I could dream of. I promised I would try and go to her next concert, as my coach Jool certified it was definitely worth it since he kept awesome memories of a concert she gave in Paris. Maybe Althea would come with me, I think they planned to meet here too, I bet she'll enjoy it as much as I did ."
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/bjorksonya.jpg
So, yeah, Sonya Jeyaseelan is having an awesome time in Iceland. Add to that an expeditive first round win over Argentine Gisela Dulko (61 64 in 57 minutes) and no doubt you'll see Sonya as a real threat again on this tour she likes so much.

Continuing the form that got her to her first final, Mary Pierce rallies from a bad start to defeat Meilen Tu 1-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(4) to advance the the second round in the Iceland Challenge. Next up for the Frenchwoman is no. 2 seed Lindsay Davenport, who by far is the highest ranked opponent Pierce has faced.
"That first set, I don't what to say. I was awful. It got better,if you can believe that - after the first four games. Meilen just got balls back on me and I was stuck. I don't know what it is about the grass, but I always seem to lose the first set. Luckily, I calmed down and started to play a much better match. I was feeling all my shots in the tie-breaks. I learned after my final last week, that I must play better and have accordingly. Lindsay is kind of struggling, but she is the defending Wimbldeon champion, she knows a thing or two about the grass and will come out dictating. I think she's a great player. I have a feeling it will be a close one. Whoever plays the big points will obviously win."

Jamea Jackson showed great heart on the court today in only her second tournament of her young career, taking 12-seed Angela Haynes in three sets. This is a great boost to her confidence, and hopes to have continued success here.

Good luck in your second round Jamea!

Ceze Jun 28th, 2006, 07:59 AM worst loss ever for Maggie
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/sp1-1.jpg
And not surprisingly it happened in Reykjavik. Maggie lost 6-1 6-2 to Marta Domachowska in the second round.
"Well, it seems I can't win in Iceland. Anyway, I don't like that country, it's too cold here, even at that time of the year. I'll probably skip it next year, it's a total waste of time." she said in a fit of pique. "I didn't play well today, and on the contrary Marta played well, that's the only explanation. I beat her twice before that week, and last time it went in 2 sets. Yet I used all the techniques that usually allow me to go farther or at least to get a three-setter. With these techniques, I was used to beating Amelie, the Australian Open Champion, in our training sessions. I don't really know why it didn't work today, see that disastrous scoreline! I'm totally lost, I have no marks anymore, and it's very bad only one week before Wimbledon. I'm totally lacking confidence at the moment. I'm very sorry Sonya, but I really hope we will lose soon in doubles, because I can't stand that tournament anymore," she added with tears in her voice.

"I have played her a few times before and never had a problem with her game," said Clijsters who has now won all 2 matches against the Japanese player.
"She usually runs a lot, trying to get to every ball back, but she doesn't have a really big weapon to hurt you, so I felt safe." added the world number one.
In the Round 16, Clijsters faces 13th seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland for a place in the Quarterfinals. Clijsters leads Schnyder 3-0 in H2H.

*Jool* Jun 29th, 2006, 01:23 PM REYKJAVIK Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada won two three-setters to reach the quarterfinals of both singles and doubles events at the Reykjavik Central Bank of Iceland Challenge. The day started the wrong way for Jeyaseelan as singles' opponent Francesca Schiavone of Italy played a very good match to take an early lead of 62 and 54 . Jeyaseelan fougth off 2 match points in the tie-breaker to level the match and eventually close out the third set 6/4 after a 2 hours match where she progressively played better and better whereas a frustrated Schiavone could not convert any of her occasions on Jeyaseelan's serve as the match was going. After a one hour break where she went to the sauna to relax after this tense match, Jeyaseelan and partner Magdalena Maleeva dispactched the team of Sharapova and Stosur for the second time this year , with a score of 63 57 64 , to set up a clash with unseeded Azarenka and Williams in quarters. "It's a good way to play our first tournament being seeded in doubles. We have a shot to go further and even if Maggie disllikes the cold and wet climate here, we played pretty well, and no doubt we'll try to clinchour first trophy here. That would be great. "
In singles, Jeyaseelan's opponent inquarters will be dangerous teen Russian Dinara Safina , who eliminated fourth-seeded and trophy holder Ana Ivanovic in straigth sets. "It will definitely be tough because Dinara is slowly improving and getting some good results as of late. I myself am building up confidence and good play again , so I hope my run won't end in the next round, but I go on enjoying myself on court , which is the most important thing for me. I'm excited about these upcoming matches." said the Canadian.

Vera Dushevina showed everyone why she loves the grass as she has won two tournaments in a row leading up to Wimbledon. After a win last week at the Ordina Open the young Russian didn't slow down as she won her first Tier 1A tournament and third of her career. Dushevina only dropped one set en route to the title and knocked out the 1,2, and 5 seeds on the way. With the win Dushevina has sky-rocketed to number 19 in the world, a huge jump from a previous 41. Dushevina's flat strokes give her the advantage on the low-bouncing surface and now she will set her sight on the Venus Rosewater Dish.
" Winning here at Reykjavic was so great. This is the best win of my life. After winning Ordina I thought it would be good to reach the quarterfinals but to win again is amazing. I'm the only person to win three titles this year and I think its pretty awesome that I've done all this on just my first season. I think being seeded at Wimbledon will help me but not that much. My main goal is just not too lose early. I want another good result at Wimbledon, its my favorite tournament. I don't expect to win it but I want to go far. My next goal will be to win a doubles tournament, maybe I can win Wimbledon with Lina or Bob (laughs). Now I'm ready to enter the top 10 and be a real force here at LTT!"
