coincidence , Birmingham was my breakthrough tournament last season, it will always be remembered for me as the venue where I clinched my first semi-final spot , and especially my first top tens wins, and more especially my first over Kim who was number 2 and fresh winner of Roland Garros . Seles , ranked 9 , was the other top 10 player I defeated en route to the semis and this time I have to face her in first round and the upset could happen in the other way .

Sonya loves Tiers II, hopefully she'll have a good run here again . :D

Kremer Receives Wildcard

http://www.tennis.info/images/Ordina4/4Thu/Kremer5601.jpg
Anne Kremer practices her serve in training on Saturday ahead of her first round showdown with Maggie Maleeva

World number 40 received a wildcard into the Tier II Virgin International in Birmingham for making the Berlin Quaterfinals and for recent good play in doubles, which included a final in Madrid with friend Dinara Safina. However, it suprised the Luxembourg veteran. "I initially looked at the draw of the Ordina Open but I couldn't see my name. I wondered if there was a mistake but looked at Birmingham and found I was scheduled to play there as a wildcard. I had to re-book my flight, but it was a nice suprise," Anne told us. Anne is currently at a career high of 40 in the world, her previous being 42 last week. Last week in Roland Garros, Anne struggled in all 3 of her matches in singles, mixed doubles and womens doubles. "I am keeping my same gameplan here. If I don't win a match, I will see what I can change and alter for next week. My next aim is to keep climbing the rankings and end the year in the top 50. It will be tough, especially with my US Open Quarter final points to defend. I am really very nervous about those points. I would lastly like to thank the tour directors, to negotiating my wildcard with Birmingham. It means a lot to me, I don't expect much of myself this week but I shall see how I go."

Getting Lonely at the Top

http://svt.se/content/1/c6/36/32/38/Kim-Clijsters-miamiseger-prb-411.jpg http://www.estadao.com.br/banco/img/livre/2006/04/82006041010170515mauresmo-arquivo-ap.jpg
Kim Clijsters retained the World Number 1 ranking despite losing in the quater-finals of her title defense at Roland Garros, whilst Amelie Mauresmo crashed out in Round 2 and announced her retirement from the tour.

Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport remained the only two players in the top four from last season. The Slam winners went from 3 to 2 as reigning Australian Open Champion announced her retirement from the tour last week. She joins Anastasia Myskina in early retirement.

Last week saw suprise winner Silvia Farina-Elia win the French Open in emphatic style, taking out Elena Bovina in the final. The tour now turns its attention to grass, Birmingham, Iceland and Wimbledon all within weeks, however there are no front runners for any of the titles as the favourties dont seem to be the favourties anymore.

Martina Hingis and Ana Ivanovic has dropped in the rankings. Despite being ranked 5, Ivanovic has yet to find the form that took her to the same position last year. The Swiss Miss has barely strung two mathces together since her Bejing win at the start of the year. The only player to defend a titel so far seems to be in better shape, however is still a huge question mark for taking home titles on the grass.

http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2005/writers/jon_wertheim/04/11/mailbag.0411/p1_lindsay_all.jpg
Davenport only lost 1 match on grass last year, taking home two titles and a 12 match winning streak.

Success started for 2nd ranked Lindsay Davenport on the grass last year, taking the Birmingham and Wimbledon title home. Davenport jumed to a career high of number 2 in the world after a semi-final performance at Roland Garros. Davenpoort is keen to be equally or more succesful as last year so reach the goal of becoming world number 1. There is work yet to do, as even though Myskina and Mauresmo are long gone, it seems a new breed of 'favourites' are about to take Davenport and Clijsters by suprise.

Safina awarded WC in Birmingham

http://www.tennis-x.com/images/players/safina-moscow.jpg

Dinara Safina will play Virgin International Championship after Birmingham organizers decided to provide WC to Dinara and her doubles partner Anne Kremer.
"I'm happy to play here," - said Safina, who joined the LTT in the end of last season,- "my results are rather poor but I was good in Berlin and organizers decided to give me a chance to play here too. I'm happy that Anne joined me here and we'll play doubles here again. We're good team, we're fighting fir YEC spot in doubles."

One year after...

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/1-1.jpg

Maggie at a practise session in the UK

Maggie is ready for the grass season. Last year at that time of the year she was a newcomer on the Tour, and now she is a top10 player with 2 titles ('s Hertogenbosch and Warsaw), 3 finals appareances (Dubai, HITS and Sydney), a semifinal (Rome) and 2 other quarterfinals appareances (California Open and Australian Open). This year she enters Birmingham instead of the Ordina Open which was her first tournament last season. So she won't be able to defend her title in the Netherlands, but she can still defend her 150 points by reaching the final in the UK. With the exception of her title at the Ordina Open, she doesn't have a lot of points to defend on grass, only a 3rd round at Wimbledon and a 1st round in Iceland.
Good luck Maggie!

Tati continues in Birmingham

http://www.ontennis.com/gallery/golovin/golovin-185565454kPlfFH_ph.jpg

It was a nice match for me. I played good and my motivation was good. But I have my last exam tomorrow, so I don't know how I'll play. I hope I will be the last to play, so I can celebrate a bit with my family and friends. But in 25 hours I'll be a graduate, so fuck tennis:lol:
About her wonderful doublespartner Althea, she adds:
Althea is one of the best out there. She's so fun and full of life. I don't understand why Bovina would would say she is an ugly old dog, but I guess it's because she herself feels ugly, and with good reason. She has not been lucky. And the only reason she is in top ten is because she was lucky in one tournament and then Momo retired. But it's good she can get her frustrations out somehow. It's just sad that everybody knows she's a sore loser and she fucks everyone she can on the tour. Umpires I mean. None of the players find her attracting... Poor girl really. She tries so hard to find friends...
About her break next week:
It will be good to take a break next week. I need it. But I do fear that my form will not be so good since I'll be drunk at the festival, but so be it. It'll be good. I am young, I need to live my life:)

Tati won 6-4 6-3 over Petrova

Sesil finally wins

Q-Sesil how was ur match today ..?
Sesil: I think this is one of the best tennis ive played in a long time.. Since the Australian open maybe..I've been practicing hard trying to get my game back together as it once was:)

Q-U lost the opening set 6-3 was it because of ur confidence?
Sesil: Well, lately i havent been really confident i havent been confident at all actually..I lost alot of 1st round matches. I had problems dealing with my fitness too.. that's why im happy i won today it was an important match for me.

Q-Sesil for the last question next ull be facing seed number the italian Silvia Farina Elia what are your chances in this match against the 4th seed?
Sesil:I think it will be a tough match for me, but i'll go out there and play my best.. and may the best play win;)

Althea Gibson asks a ranking outside the top 50.
http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/4650/waitin0gv.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
After a horrid clay season, Althea Gibson is dominated by Bovina, the Russian handicaped & hairy old dolphin.
"I'm not even able to take a set anymore, and i don't know what to do. I have a semifinal to defend next week & i can get past the second round of any tournments. I need some times to think, don't know how long, but i can't play right now."

She had great hopes on Grass, as she played her best matches on this surface.
"I arrived on grass. If i'm not even able to win there, i don't know where i'll be playing well. I don't know how i can be 11 when i can't win a match, i think lower ranked, i would have be hungrier to do my best."

About her plans for the coming days.
"I'm going back to NY, normal life again, friends & my homecity. Just everything i need right now. Good luck to my usuals.".

Azarenka Upsets Davenport In First Round

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v431/Derek1206/Azarenka3nn.jpg
Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus celebrats a point during her victory over Lindsay Davenport.

BIRMINGHAM, England -- When Viktoria Azarenka first saw the draw and saw she played Lindsay Davenport in the first round, she wasn't too happy. But that all changed as the up-and-comer defeated the No.2 player in the world 5-7 6-3 6-3.

"I'm so excited!" Azarenka said to the media with a big smile. "This is the biggest win of my career behind my win over Clijsters last summer. I'm so happy I was able to pull this one out. It was really tough and right now I'm just so happy."

Davenport used her experience to sneak out the first set, but the fearless teenager rallied back to take the second set after a forehand from Davenport sailed long. Azarenka painted the lines throughout the third set and sealed the deal with a backhand down the line winner on her first match point.

"I played extremely well the whole match. I dictated a lot of points and I made her move. I didn't play defensive tennis. I decided to hit toe-to-toe with her and it worked. She won the important points in the first set and that's why she won it. In the second and third set I relaxed a bit more and went for my shots even more."

The bubbly, young teenager next plays Ai Sugiyama of Japan in the second round.

"It's going to be a tough match for sure, I mean she gets a lot of balls back, and you know, she's very consistent. She doesn't give you a lot of free points. I will need to keep my errors down and I'll try to take control of as many points as I can. I'm looking forward to this match. Hopefully when all is said and done, I will come out on top," said Azarenka.

Next up is Sonya which I know will be a very very tough match - she is a great player and I will need a 100% to beat her. Azarenka Overcomes Slow Start, Sugiyama To Advance

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/9274/io8213gallery8fb1rr.jpg
Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus celebrates winning a point during her victory over Ai Sugiyama.

BIRMINGHAM, England -- Viktoria Azarenka advanced into the quarterfinals after overcoming a slow start and a stern test from Ai Sugiyama for a 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory.

"I'm really happy that I was able to recover after the first set," Azarenka said to the press. "Ai's a good player and she really made me work hard to win this match. I was able to win the important points today. I stayed strong mentally."

Sugiyama won the first set after the young Belarussian netted a backhand. Azarenka was able to contain her unforced errors in the second set and tied it at one set all as Sugiyama hit a forehand just wide. In the third set it was a battle as both players were playing good tennis, but Azarenka moved on into the quarterfinals with a drop volley winner.

"It was an up and down match. She played good in the first set and then I started to get my rhythm going in the second and then we both played good in the third set. I think it was about who was going to be mentally stronger that would prevail in this match, and it was me. I'm glad to be in another quarterfinal."

Azarenka plays Stephanie Dubois in the second round. The two have met twice with Azarenka winning both times.

"I've played her twice and I've beaten her both times, but that doesn't matter. Davenport was 3-0 against me, but I was able to beat her, so it really doesn't matter who's won the previous meetings. It's going to be another battle, another tough match and hopefully I'll come out as the victor and with another win," said Azarenka.

Maggie failed again

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/sp1.jpg

Magdalena Maleeva loses to Nicole Vaidisova in straight sets in the quarters at Birmingham. Last year winner of the Ordina Open, Maggie was not able to defend the 150 points this year.

"I'm very disappointed, all the more that I lost in 2 sets to a player I usually own. Of course it's a great result for Nicole, who doesn't reach the quarters so often, but I really wanted to face Kim, a player I have never met so far. And of course, she passed and I lost, as usual. It seems I will have to work on my tactics, once again. The fact is that I really believe less and less in my chances of winning another title one day, in singles or in doubles, and with Wimbledon coming, it's not a very good sign. For sure I don't deserve my ranking" said a confidentless Maggie.

I would love to keep this winning streak going but if it ends, it ends. Next up is Steph, I know her game very well but I have never played her in singles and she is in good form this week and could shock me!'

Sonya Jeyaseelan lost in the quarters of the Virgin International event to French Open champion Silvia Farina Elia. Last season, Jeyaseelan reached the semi-final of this tournament with wins over Seles and French Open champion Kim Clijsters. This time , she did beat Seles again , but failed to clinch another victory against the most recently played Slam , as Farina Elia closed out the match in twin sets of 76(6).

http://www.radio-canada.ca/sportsv1/images/interntennisfem/1508/JeyaseelanSonyaA.jpg
Jeyaseelan : "I am satisfied I managed to win two matches , especially in a period when the tour has become so tough , and that all players seem to improve and to be able to win. I could not defend all my points, but reaching the quarters is a feeling I didn't know anymore for some time now. Concerning today's match , I will only say that Silvia is in a form to be a world number 1 rigth now, she especially has the confidence that one needs to win close matches. Still, I could easily see her fail to do good in Wimbledon, but I may be wrong , anyway she will have a lot of pressure and I wish her good luck for Birmingham, she is a very good player and her perseverance is paying. Enough talked about her, I myself am disappointed by this loss because I could have won it, she was a bit lucky in those tie-breaks, she served well when it mattered and that did it. I don't know what is the next venue but I hope I will have a shot at the quarters again because I love playing on grass so much. I also hope I will find a way to beat Silvia soon cause I really dislike it when players own our head-to-heads. I know how to play Clijsters , now I have to learn how to play Silvia."

It appeared that Jeyaseelan was a bit bitter about this result . When asked about that , she added : " You know, Silvia is a great player, and we get along quite well, but lately I can honestly say I've been a bit annoyed by her. She was often complaining about not winning titles , now I guess she found a way to focus more on her game and see how she is successful now. It's great for her , but I don't like it when a player owns the tour . *laughs* She's en route to win her third consecutive title. Yeah, I guess I am a bit jealous of her . "

:p Silvia

Nicole into First Career Semifinal

http://www.futuretennisstars.com/images/players/Nicole%20Vaidisova.gif

Nicole Vaidisova powered her way into her first career semifinal in Birmingham today with a 7-5, 7-6(5) win over Maggie Maleeva. Nicole spoke about the match.

"I knew I had nothing to lose out there today. Maggie has had better results than me so I knew I was certainly the underdog. This is my first career semifinal. I seem to do better during the split week when there are 2 tournaments. I play best when I play better players I guess. I play Kim Clijsters next, and that won't be easy, so I will be the underdog again. I will just keep playing my game and hope everything can work out at its best."

Nicole's favorite surface is grass, and in S1 she made the 3rd round at Wimbledon, her farthest round at a slam.

Nicole Vaidisova and Elena Bovina paired together to play doubles this week and they also reached the semifinals. "Elena is a great player and when she accepted to playing doubles with me, I was very excited. We are having a great week and maybe we will be able to play together again someday," Nicole said in a press conference.

Nicole will play both of her matches Friday.

Nicole Wins First Singles & Doubles Title

http://nicolevaidisova.de/gallery/albums/userpics/1%7E42.jpg
After claiming the singles title

Nicole Vaidisova has been known as a journey-women in LTT. Today she won her first singles and doubles titles in LTT as she paired with Elena Bovina.

Nicole beat Stephanie Dubois in the final 7-6(6) 3-6 7-6(5) in a 3 hour and 9 minute marathon. Nicole was unsure of her energy for this match after a long semifinal win against world #1 Kim Clijsters 5-7 7-5 7-6(6). This match was 3 hours and 34 minutes, one of the longest ever in LTT.

"I was tired last night after my win against Kim. It was a very long match and I had to save match points. It was so close, and I am happy I played 100% today," Nicole said. She was down a match point at 4-5 against Kim and another one down 5-6 in the 3rd set tiebreak.

"I am just glad I didn't have to save match points against Stephanie. With it being a final, I am not sure how I would have reacted."

http://nicolevaidisova.de/gallery/albums/userpics/normal_tn_sipaphotos462963.jpg
Nicole after taking the 2nd set against Kim

After a suitable amount of rest Nicole went out with Elena Bovina to claim the doubles title over Seles and Stevenson 5-7 6-4 6-4.

"This has been a great week. 9 wins for me, no losses. I played great tennis this week. Elena was an awesome partner. I will be back to Klara next week though, so I will try to get my good fortunes to continue with us."

Nicole will be heading to Iceland next week where she will be trying to improve her undefeated record on grass.

Nicole's Path to the Championship
R1- def K.Palkina (KGZ) 7-6(4) 7-6(0)
R2- def (8)Elena Bovina (RUS) 7-5 7-5

SF- def (1)K.Clijsters (BEL) 5-7 7-5 7-6(6)
F- def S.Dubois (CAN) 7-6(6) 3-6 7-6(5)

Out of Nicole's 5 singles matches and 12 sets, 11 of them went longer than 5-5, 6 were tiebreaks, and she only lost 2 sets.
