Mauresmo Reaches New Career High

BERLIN, Germany - Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo has now reached her highest ranking ever - she's LTT World's No. 2. With 4 titles to her credit, including the lastest doubles title won with Italian partner, Francesca Schiavone, Mauresmo is not setting her eyes on being No.1 just yet. She continues to set realistic goals for herself.

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/9548/r23102914686pn.jpg
"Right now, my coach and I are just going to be trying to new tactics. We're not really concerned with the No.1 ranking at this point. I just want to fine tune my game, that's all. I consider this tournament to be preparation for Roland Garros, plus Kim is just so far ahead right now when it comes to consistancy. I have a lot to learn still."

Looking at the draw, the Frenchwoman is set to clash with some of her friends if she goes far.

"I have a tough draw, I might have to face Althea and Sonya, and very established players such as Martina or my nemesis, Lindsay. But who knows, you know, I have to win my first match first, before being able to look ahead."

Jeyaseelan defets Smashnova in pain, reaches round two

7th seeded Sonya Jeyaseelan had to battle hard to reach the second round in Berlin, but it's already a better result than last season when she failed to Dementieva in the opening match. The Canadian won 46 63 64 in 2 hours and 26 minutes.

Today, Jeyaseelan had to fight against both her opponent's smooth balls and the wind, making things even harder. "She likes long rallies on clay, she often hits high balls with a lot of effect, and today with the wind , it was not easy to return them, it's not a kind of game I like to play. I prefer flat hitters. She has a clever game that is very tiring for the opponent. I 'm glad I prevailed , I managed top win teh key points , but it was a long difficult match, she never surrenders." In round two, Jeyaseelan will play against Frenchwoman Mary Pierce , who , in a good day, can be very hard to control. "Mary hits very strong, I like that more because there's more rhythm in her play, and I can benefit from her strength to hit harder myself. I will have to try to move her round the court, she's not the best mover. I need to take the control of the points, don't let her impose her rhythm , and take the lines. It will be tough, but I like challenges. I feel good, so I hope I will bounce back here after a few disappointing losses."

Sugiyama Gains Some Confidence

http://www.ai-sugiyama.com/gallery/aggressive/photo/img/agg_084.jpg

Every win Ai gets now is a treasure. Ai hasn't done well since the first tournament of the season where she reached the quarterfinals. Today, Ai beat Italian star, Schiavone in the first round 3-6 6-2 6-2, and will next face the number 5 seed, Ana Ivanovic.

"I feel really good about how I played today. Things are starting to click for me, and that feels really good because there are so many talented ladies on the tour that it is hard for someone like me to win. Francesca played a really nice match, but once she won the first set, I understood how to beat her and I stuck with my gameplan and it worked. Next I face Ana. She is a really good player, and I'm not expecting to win, but I would like to give her a good match. I will try to play my best tennis and see how it goes with a top player. I have been so close to beating top players in my career, let's see if tomorrow is my day."

Patty Schnyder Takes First Step In Defending Berlin Quarterfinal

http://www.patty-schnyder.com/berlin044.jpg

Seeded for the first time all year, Patty Schnyder has had a good start in defending her quarterfinal points in Berlin, Germany. The 15th seeded Swiss beat Serena Williams in a pair of tiebreakers; 7-6 (3), 7-6 (0).

"I felt like I played pretty good tennis. Serena has gotten a lot better this year, and I'm happy to get a win in straight sets. It just seems like I was more mentally solid in the breakers. Not much else separated us."

She has moved on to the R32 where she will play Australian Samantha Stosur. Schnyder and Stosur last met in Fed Cup, two weeks ago. Schndyer defeated Stosur 6-3, 6-3.

"I felt like my draw was horrid to me. I had Serena in the first round, who has been playing really well this year. Sammy is a rising star. I think she has a lot of potential but I think I can handle her on a clay court. Then, I'd have last week's finalist, Lindsay. Lindsay is an amazing player, but I've beaten her before. I think I could do it again on clay."

Schnyder will face Stosur tomorrow for a spot in the round of 16.

BOVINA DENIED THE GERMAN MEN’S FANTASY WISHES

http://images.tsn.ca/images/stories/20041015/Bovina_32683.jpg

The German men devastated to see their fantasy’s Russian beauty Anna Kournikova denied her first round by her fellow countrywoman Elena Bovina in straight sets. The crowd begins to boo on the winner and it affected her heaps. The most amazing thing happened in the match was Kournikova actually pleased with the crowd takes her side and even acknowledge them with a “thank you”.

“I have a better idea – ban Anna Kournikova from the tour.” Bovina suggests, “So, all players not need to worry about the crowd treating them when they play against Anna Kournikova. And she shows lack of sportsmanship today.”

Alicia is the winner of Maria Sharapova in 3 sets 75 46 64. Maggie and Alicia have already met 3 times, and the head-to-head is in favour of Alicia, who won their last encounter at Monte Carlo:

Pierce Rolls Into Second Round

http://www.mary-pierce.org/German_Open_2002/2.jpg
Fresh off a quarterfinal appearance in Madrid, France's Mary Pierce moved through comfortably to the round of 32 in Berlin.

BERLIN, Germany

Continuing last week's form, Mary Pierce secured her spot in the second round with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Czech teen Nicole Vaidisova. Pierce, broken only once, wasted no time in frustrating her younger opponent. With her trademark groundstrokes, she rarely let Vaidisova match her power.

It didn't seem to matter what Vaidisova tried, Pierce had an answer for it. "I just wanted to be more aggressive, so I hit as deep as I could, even threw in some spin on my forehand side. I've been hitting the ball so well in practice, so I knew if I continued this rhythm, I'd have a good day."

Pierce also had her best serving day to date, hitting 8 aces. "I was very happy with my serve today, so much so, that it allowed me to sneak into the net. That's something I'm working on. I'm going to go to that against players like her."

Pierce's next opponent is no. 7 Sonya Jeyaseelan, who defeated Pierce in the quarterfinals of Kooyong. "She's a very smart player. She's a grinder, always keeps the ball in play and is seemingly indefatigable. If I played the way I did today, then I like my chances. If not, that's the end of this tournament. I'm looking forward to this rematch."

Althea Gibson to face a hot Safina in Berlin 2nd round.

Gibson def. Kuznetsova 6-4 5-7 6-4
"i had a three setter too last time we played, with Kuznetsova, tough match, even tougher than the last time, where i took the last set 6-2. Here it's 6-4, and we've been at 4-4 so long. so many deuces. But i had to break her this time, cause we both served well throughout the match, i hadn't been closer to break, and i'm glad i did it. that was the key to win the match."

Next opponent will be Dinara Safina of Russia.
"She won quite easily, she looked confident from what i've been told. I will have to be immediatly agressive cause she'll be fresh. I'm not really confident, i don't really feel my game on clay. We'll see."

About her ranking perspective.
"Well, obviously, everybody wants to enter in the top 10, but to do so, you have to win a lot of matches, a lot. Kimiko is the illustration of consistency, Momo has tremendous results, that's why they are at the top. I feel good in the top 15, hopefully i will stay there too or at least in the top 20. I will have some points to defend soon and it will be even harder to rise, so i have to take all the opportunities now."

Tati wins a match

https://skoda.emu.dk/skoda-cgi/polfoto/Polfoto/Photo/Live/watermarking/skoda_AP711867.jpg

After 2 hours and 51 minuts, French Tatiana Golovin could finally add another win to her career after several weeks of early loses. This inspite of the french girl has her first oral exam next week, in the middle of Roland Garros.

It must be a huge relieve for Tatiana the week before finally winning a match after a month with bad play and lack of concentration. She has been losing to all kinds of players. In the Australian open final to a high-ranked, to lower tournaments to even lower players. She has been mentally down and couldn't find her game. In the middle of this she also decided to finish her school this year and then have to go to 7 exams in one and a half month. So far three is done(and hopefully passed), and four is yet to come. Next one on wednesday at the French Open.

"My big fear is that the organisers will put me to play on wednesday and I wont be able to play then. If I do not show up at the exam, I will fail. So I really hope they wont ask me to play wednesday, if they do, it better be the latest match, if not, I have to withdraw, and I would hate that"
Despite all her loses, she and doublespartner, Althea Gibson, has really worked it out. They haven't got a really big result yet, but they keep on making progress, playing better and better for each match. Now they are also seeded and will also be seeded at the French.

"I really enjoy playing Althea, she's a blurb! She might be old to look at, but in her heart she's still a kid. She's amazing with a racket. She knows some tricks that not a long girls know any longer, and she brings magic to the courts"
Tatianas goals for the French Open isn't so high.

"I don't know really. My focus is on my exams, and I really want and need to do well. Of course when I play I do not think of economy and international politics, but I use so much time preparing for my exams, so... I would be satisfied with a quarterfinal, that's below my seeding I guess, but we'll see, my game isn't really consistent at the moment. But after my exams I will take 'em all down" she laughs before walking away, finding her book about international politics.

Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan finally beat her demons toi reach the third round of Berlin Open . In fact, it's the very first time that the Canadian has won two singles matches in a row on clay. "I don't like clay very much. There's no particular reason, but my results are poor and I still don't know why, cause I think it's agreeable to play on clay. It's just a bit more difficult and it depends on the draws you have too." The number 7 ranked player in the world (a rank she does'nt seem to move from) , dispatched a tough opponent , Frenchwoman Mary Pierce, in a very close match of 76(4) 67(1) 76(3). "It could not have been closer. Except in the tie breaks. But we hold serves most of the time , and none of us really took teh lead. Experience of playing tough matches prevailed in the last set, but it could really have gone either way. Once again, i won in pain but am glad to be in the third round. Now, I bet Anne will give me a run for my money too next round , she upset hingis today and played amazing, I dont know what to expect . I'm kinda getting my confidence back, slowly, thanks to these close wins. Hopefully I won't have another nightmare tomorrow on court."

Althea Gibson will try to keep the one good result on each surface at RG.

Disappointed, Althea Gibson does not look as she enters in the press room."mmm? I've been warned that Safina would be tough. Yesterday i was telling that i lost 10 of 12 lost match on a tiebreak, well it seems that this time i tried to save all my skills for the tiebreak and let the match go away."

Despite feeling not confident and able to produce a good tennis on clay, Althea Gibson will still try hard to have a good result in Paris."Well, i had a good result by surface season, and i did well at the slams, so it would be nice to try here too, even if on clay. It's really demanding, and i don't want to have a bad grass season because of a hurt body but a slam is a slam, i told you i just want to go far there, even if it's just there."

One thing about her poor form is really bothering her."I love Tatiana, we are friends, truly, we have so much fun & smart convo. But i don't want to make her doubles rank go down cause i'm not in a good form. We'll see, but she's a top player and is able to do well everywhere. With or without me."

Clijsters Advances

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/3327/Kim_in_Rome_11.jpg

(1)K.Clijsters (BEL) def. S.Foretz (FRA) 7-5 6-4

World number one and current French Open Champion, Kim Clijsters took another step to retaining the top spot when she dismissed France's, Stephanie Foretz 7-5 6-4 and second seed Mauresmo ended the run of newcomer Shahar Peer 4-6 6-3 6-3.

In the first set, Foretz offered a stern challenge early on, matching Clijsters in some fiercely-contested rallies.

But Clijsters always held the advantage, serving well and keeping Foretz under pressure.

The Belgian 22-year-old broke for a 6-5 lead in the first set, claiming Foretz serve after the French woman had led 40-0. Clijsters then went on and served out the first set, hitting 2 aces to take the first set 7-5

"I really wasn't in the rhythm," Clijsters said. "It happens sometimes and you just have to deal with it."

Trailing 4-3 in the second set, Clijsters quickly regrouped and won her service game at love to tie the set at four-all. She would lose only two points in the final two games, winning the set and match to advance to a round 16 matchup with American, Alexandra Stevenson.

"A lot came down to big points," Clijsters said. "Every time I was down, I was able to take control and win the point."

Momo Passes Peer Test
Mauresmo/Schiavone Also Through to Next Round
http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/6246/sh126dk.jpg
(2)A.Mauresmo (FRA) def.S.Peer (ISR) 3-6 6-4 6-4

BERLIN, Germany - Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo advanced to the next round after surviving a scare from newcomer Shahar Peer, 3-6 6-4 6-4.

It was obvious that Mauresmo was taken aback by Peer's aggressive play in the first set. In fact, it took some time for the World's No.2 to get into the match.

"Definitely, the newcomers usually play like they have nothing to loose and that is dangerous for the top players if they don't come into the match with a better game plan. I had to make adjustments in the next two sets and it payed off. I'm pleased to make through to the next round."

In other action, World No.1 Kim Clijsters cruised through her match, defeating France's Stephanie Foretz in straight sets, 7-5 6-4. And unseeded pair, A.Mauresmo/F.Schiavone, continued their good run in doubles by defeating M.Sharapova/S.Stosur, after dropping the first set, 2-6 7-5 6-4. It was a tough match but the Franco-Italian pair are starting to have better chemistry together on court.

Patty Schnyder Just One Win Away From Defending Berlin Points

http://www.patty-schnyder.com/frenchopen061.jpg

15th seeded Patty Schnyder just can't get enough of these tiebreakers. In the three matches she's played here, in Berlin, she's won all of them by the same scoreline; 7-6, 7-6. Today's singles victim? Fiesty Aussie, Samantha Stosur.

"Again, I think I'm playing fairly well. I've just been gaining more and more confidence as the year has progressed, and I think I can make a real stab at titles. My draw has certainly been kind to me."

Speaking of her draw, Patty Schnyder will next play Lina Krasnouroutskaya. Name doesn't sound familar? That's okay. Lina is a newcomer to the tour, who has been making waves recently.

"I think Lina is a great player. I was hitting with my good friend Anna (Kournikova) yesterday, and she came and hit with us. She's a really nice girl, and sh'es been having great results. If I'm not mistaken, she made the final last week. And she's beaten two great players in Venus and Lindsay this week. She'll be tough."

Patty Schnyder will play Lina Krasnoroutskaya tomorrow for a place in the quarterfinals.

BOVINA IS ON FIRE!

http://zfoto.tripod.com/zkopihtm/zkopi/b1209z3.jpg

After defeated Anna Kournikova and her entire German fans in the opening round with received a bad treatment from the crowd makes her grows a stronger person. She reached the event’s quarterfinals without dropped a set so far. She will face the fourth seed, Tatiana Golovin of France that would be her first match against a seed player this week.

As for her petition to ban Kournikova from the tour, nobody signed the petition so far. It makes her angry and wonder if anyone from the tour like her beside Svetlana Kuznetsova, Iveta Benesova and Flavia Pennetta who considered her only friends. “They told me they need her to keep in the tour because all tournaments would sell tickets successful and get more media about our sport and tour but whatever.”

Bovina also aims to make third straight final at doubles event this week with her permanent partner Kuznetsova. They won first title together two weeks ago at Monte-Carlo and made final last week with Pennetta in Rome.

7th seeded Sonya Jeyaseelan was upset by unheralded Anne Kremer in the round of 16 of Berlin Open. The Canadian lost in three sets of 64 36 64, and was apparently in a bad mood answering journalists in the post-match press conference. She stunned all the reporters with some of her answers, saying she arguably "(is) playing the worst tennis of (her) career right now " and that she questions her future on the LTT. After a rumour that went through all teh press room, she added something before someone else asked another question .

"Right now, I feel extremely bad , very tired and angry after myself, and also other people who are not related to the tour. It's personnal. my coach and I are having difficulties right now in our lives and we can't do proper job. I told last week I thought it was a shame that some top players could not dedicate themselves totally to tennis , but actually, now is my time to lose interest a bit . I still love playing, I still love the game, my friends... This tour is just awesome. But this loss , like all the previous ones, hurt me a lot, and don't come in an ideal moment as I was already having a bad day. I'm just feeling down mentally, really low, and I think I might need a break. I don't really know.Maybe I'll skip the French Open or only play doubles there because I don't want to let Maggie down. I don't know, my decision is not taken yet. I don't want to hear about tennis for the rest of this week, I'd like to retire to an isolated island and escape from the problems I'm struggling against at the moment. I'm not saying I'm retiring, I'll be back, I may even never quit and play next week, that's probably what gonna happen, but that's how I feel right now and I hope the lucky days will come back soon . before I go, I want to congratulate Anne on her win, she fought hard today against a player that was obviosuly not enjoying herself and played a really bad match, it was not easy for her to focus and play her best because I gave no rhythm at all to the match and made lots of errors, but she went through it never trembling and did what she had to do to take the win, she deserved it lots mor ethan me , good luck to her. "

After this strange declaration, Jeyaseelan left the press room in a brouhaha , letting everyone behind her wondering about what happened to one of teh so far most dedicated players.

Jeyaseelan is supposed to play the French open next week but her declarations allow people to doubt about her participation in Paris.

Ana Ivanovic shocked herself when she won 2 matches in both singles and doubles. The glamour girl is defending a doubles title here with Rodionova.

"This week, I had to go for a photoshoot involving a tennis racquet. They wanted me to have some action shots so I practised my swing there. I didn't expect this small 'practice' would cause my strangely good results here in Berlin. Hopefully, I get more of these kind of photoshoots so that I can have better results!"

Anne leaving practice with doubles partner, friend and quarter final opponent Dinara Safina

Berlin – Luxembourgs finest tennis player, Anne Kremer has reached her third quarterfinal after a win over Canada’s Sonya Jeyaseelan.

“I think I have peaked too early,” Anne says while we meet her at a function. “I really have only one good tournament per surface and I guess this is my clay success. I would have liked to have done well in Roland Garros, but this is a prestigious tournament in Berlin and I really can’t complain.” The topic soon moves to that of her win over top ten player Sonya Jeyaseelan “I played her in Sydney earlier this year. She won 76 26 76 and that loss was heartbreaking for me. In the first set of that match I wasted set points and 1 match point. But really these are the moments you live for and have to fight through them no matter what. It is certainly one of my best wins.” The girl from Luxembourg added. After the match, some controversy was created Jeyaseelan revealed that there could be plans to not enter Roland Garros. “I feel bad, I really do.” Anne answers when asked the question “Sonya is a champion in more ways than one and is a real idol for children to look up to. As of her match against Dinara Safina, Anne says, “We are good friends and really got closer last week when we made the doubles final. We have played before and she beat me. I wasn’t playing my best tennis that day but I would really like to be able to beat her. If I lose, I will still be happy and watch her semi final match, no matter how poorly I play.”

Sonya told me (em, that's the coach talking ;) ) today she felt bad to react like that after her loss , that her personnal problems overwhelmed her and could not be an excuse and that she needed to think about it before taking a decision whether she will play in Paris. I'm pretty sure she'll play . I managed to persuade her to come and have a practice session tomorrow.

Patty Schnyder Defends Berlin Points, Looks To Go Farther

http://www.patty-schnyder.com/berlin0516.jpg

Patty Schnyder has nothing to worry about, now. After a three set win over Lina Krasnoroutskaya, Schnyder has successfully defended her quarterfinal points from last year. However, this year she hopes to go even farther.

"This clay season has been exactly what I needed. I'm 10-2 so far on the clay this year, and I'm in great form heading into Roland Garros. Lina played well today, but again, I'm just too tough on the big points. I'm confident going into my match tomorrow."

Tomorrow, Patty Schnyder will play Ana Ivanovic for a place in the semifinals. Three weeks ago, in Monte Carlo, Schnyder beat Ivanovic 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. That was their only career meeting.

Clijsters recovers to down Farina-Elia

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/3103/21237485293clijsters.jpg

(1)K.Clijsters (BEL) def. (6)S.Farina-Elia (ITA) 4-6 6-4 6-4

Berlin - World Number One, Kim Clijsters dropped the opening set against Silvia Farina-Elia on Thursday, but recovered to steal a hard-fought victory over the Italian at the BMW Women's International in Berlin.

In the tournament's most dramatic contest to date for the world number one, Clijsters appeared to be close to defeat against Farina-Elia, when the Italian broke her for a 4-2 lead in the second set. But from that point on, the Belgian stepped up her level, running down Farina-Elia's most ambitious forays and powering them back for winners.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sixth-seeded Farina-Elia, playing in her first tour event since winning her first singles title last week in Italy, came out with confidence and seized control of the match early on, pounding her first serve and hitting the lines with her heavy sliced backhands, as Clijsters struggled to find her serve and game.

"I knew from the start that it was going to be very tough out there, and that I had to play well at the important points. Silvia played a great first set, but I think she started to feel slightly tired as the match moved on."

Farina-Elia took advantage -- breaking the young Belgian in the first set after two double faults. But after Farina-Elia held at 4-2, Clijsters stepped up a gear and began to serve with variety and efficiency. She also matched Farina-Elia in crosscourt rallies and pounced on her opponent's weak second serves to level the first set at 4-4.

Farina-Elia than broke Clijsters to go 5-4 ahead when she forced the 22-year-old into a backhand error and won the set when her opponent missed a backhand down the line.

In the second set, Farina-Elia continued to play well, breaking Clijsters in the fifth game with a forehand pass down the line. Up 4-2 in the second set, Farina-Elia suddenly lost her edge. Clijsters held serve to go up 5-4, then broke Farina-Elia to win the set.

The Belgian ran off seven straight games to lead 3-0 in the third set as Farina-Elia's frustration grew and she was unable to regain her early poise. Farina-Elia won just six points during the stretch.

Clijsters was never seriously threatened again, winning the contest when Farina-Elia dumped a backhand into the net after 1hr and 57minutes.

"I'm obviously very happy with a win like that. Silvia has been playing great tennis lately and im happy that I used my opportunity to step it up and play at a higher level against, a great opponent, it was another good challenge for us both.

“I just kept going for my shots," said Clijsters, who now leads Farina-Elia 3-0. "I was so focused on winning the match."

“Silvia is a great player, you have to take advantage when they're not playing their best games -- and that's what I did today,”

In the Semifinals, Clijsters faces Russian; Elena Bovina for a place in the Final.

Patty Schnyder Moves Into Berlin Final

http://www.patty-schnyder.com/frenchopen0614.jpg

After posting a dismal 3-4 start to the season, Patty Schnyder has hit a patch of amazing form, going 12-2 in her last 14 matches. After reaching the final of Monte Carlo, Schnyder posted two Fed Cup wins, before a shock loss to Alexandra Stevenson in Rome. This week, she has reached another final, scoring a 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-4 win over Dinara Safina.

"I could not be more pleased with my preparation for Roland Garros, which is the 2nd most important tournament to me, behind Zurich. I'm stroking the ball well, moving well, I'm in great shape. Everything is just falling into place now."

In the final, Patty will take on unseeded Russian, Elena Bovina, who upset #1 Kim Clijsters in the semifinals. Schnyder and Bovina have never met in singles, and neither has won a singles title. That will all change tomorrow.

"Elena is one of those dark horses each week. She's had great doubles results lately, so you knew that eventually, it would transfer to singles, which it has this week. She's got a big game, hits the ball extremely hard. Hopefully, I can counter that with my variety and such. It should be a great match."

Patty Schnyder will take on Elena Bovina tomorrow for the Berlin title.
