*Joey* Apr 18th, 2006, 04:26 PM Daniela cruised into second round!
http://www.danielafrenchsite.com/pictures/albums/2006/anikphotos/Hantuchova21_miami2006.jpg
Last week, at the Qantas International tournament, Daniela suffered a first round lost to Zsofia Gubacsi by the score of 4-6, 7-5 and 2-6. Effectively the Slovakian beauty didn’t have a great week. After that lost, Daniela trained very hard on the court with her great friend Harkleroad. ‘‘I wasn’t playing well last week. You know, it wasn’t my week. So, my trainer and I decided to worked very hard for the next tournament.’’ said Hantuchova.
Today, at the Commonwealth Bank Challenge, Daniela Hantuchova defeated Mauresmo, seed #10. Mauresmo was the highest seeded players to fall today. Slovakian girl won the match by the score of 7-5, 4-6 and 6-4. Hantuchova began the match with powerful shots. She was playing very well and then, she won the first set. Mauresmo played brilliant tennis during the second set but at the third one, Hantuchova was more competitive and that’s why she won this match. ‘‘This match was very close! Mauresmo was playing very good tennis and I was too. The little difference was the attitude during the sets, that’s why I won it. That’s my best career victory, you know, this is only my 3rd tournaments and I beat her! I will have a great career on this Tour, I am sure! Well, this victory brings me a lot of confidence for my next match. My opponent for the next round is Schiavone. I really don’t know which strategy I will use for this match. I am going to talk with my trainer to find a good strategy. I will arrive on the court with a positive attitude and I know that I can beat her for sure!’’ said the Slovakian goddess to the press conference after her match.

TF Chipmunk Apr 18th, 2006, 05:18 PM ALG  Nice win :yeah: Good recovery too :bounce:
Ellery Apr 18th, 2006, 06:57 PM Li takes out Williams
http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/li-australian-open-afp_8103_rx.jpg
China's Ting Li obtained her first win of the season with a 64 63 upset over eleventh seed, American Venus Williams.
"I am very happy with my victory today. In spite of the scoreline, it was a tough match, with many long rallies. This win really helps my confidence."
Li next takes on Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany.
"I think I've won back-to-back matches only twice in my career, so I really hope to improve that :o . Anna-Lena is a very nice player, and I really look forward to playing her. I'll try to improve the variety in my shots and come to the net more often. It will be very tough though, as Anna-Lena's serve is so lethal and her groundies so precise."

TF Chipmunk Apr 18th, 2006, 08:11 PM Groenefeld Powers Into Second Round
http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/659/20060316_05_57032278rl039_pacific_life.jpg
Kooyong, Australia - Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany kept her streak alive, reaching the second round again this season for the 3rd time in as many tournaments. She accomplished the feat with a 6-2 5-7 6-3 victory over Anna Smashnova of Israel.
Playing the game that took her to the semifinals of last week's Tier 1A in Sydney, the German easily took the first set 6-2. Just as it looked like Groenefeld was going to run away with the match, the Russian-turned-Israeli Smashnova played solidly and refused to give Groenefeld the match. The German, however, recovered and took the final set with one break of serve.
"I'm happy I got out of today's match," Groenefeld said. "Anna was tough to put away, she just stuck in there."
Groenefeld has played solid tennis lately, reaching the quarterfinals of the year's first event. She followed that up with a semifinal appearance last week in Sydney, where she fell to Tatiana Golovin. Riding a wave of confidence, the German only hopes to continue this streak of solid play through to the year's first grand slam.
This week, however, there is more on the line than just confidence. Should the German advance far enough in the Kooyong field, she could earn herself a top 16 seed in next week's Australian Open, something that will help her greatly as she attempts to pass her quarterfinal best showing in any grand slam (Wimbledon).
Groenefeld next takes on Ting Li of China, an upset winner over American Venus Williams.
"Ting's going to be a tough match," Groenefeld said. "I've never played her before, but I know she can get a lot of balls back."
"I'll have to play my hardest."

France's Mary Pierce hits a backhand.
Kooyong, AUSTRALIA
Motherhood seems to be agreeing with Mary Pierce. Three months after giving birth to twins, Pierce still a couple steps slow, dug deep to defeat feisty Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne 6-4, 7-5.
Pierce used her precision groundstrokes, flatfooting Henin-Hardenne and keeping her pushed behind the baseline. And it also helped that Pierce was serving an insane 72%, and firing 10 aces in her 1 hr., 42 min match.
"You know, I felt pretty good this morning. I got a full night's rest, which is a miracle with two newborns and all. My au pair is amazing. She just took care of most of everything so I could focus on my opponent. Being a single mother, I need all the support I can get. I'm just so grateful for all the wins and learn from the losses just as well. Justine's a dangerous player always, so I knew it would be tough. Actually, I was a little worried going into the match, but my timing is coming back."
Pierce faces no. 16 Monica Seles in the second round.

Julia Schruff won her LTT debut match today, dispatching of Marta Domachowska 6-3 7-6. Schruff is a very crafty player who can move the ball around and creat angles. She outsmarted Domachowska and played better on the bigger points. Julia Schruff will now face world number 1 Kim Clijsters. She is also partnered with Lina Krasnourtskaya in doubles and they will face number 5 seed Myskina/Zvonareva in the first round.

Cat's Pajamas Apr 20th, 2006, 03:20 AM Schruff Shocks LTT World!
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/3199/8551330schruff.jpg
Julia Schruff has stunned the LTT tour today as just a few hours ago she dismantled world number 1 Kim Clisters 6-3 4-6 6-3. No one could believe this had happened as Schruff is yet to even debut on the ranking or even have a profile yet! But this girl has game and it was evident as Kim Clijsters couldn't believe she was being beat. After Schruff nailed backhand dropshot on matchpoint the entire crowd's mouth dropped in awe as they could not fathom what had just happened. Schruff began dancing around the net chord and then the crowd erupted in cheer as their underdog had come through! Schruff will now play 15 seed Anastasia Rodionova where she looks to avenge her good friend Krasnoroutskaya who lost to her in the first round. The team unfortunately lost to 5 seed Myskina/Zvonareva in three tight sets.
Keep on Truckin Julia!

[5] L.Davenport (USA) def. K. Koukalova (CZE) 5-7 6-3 7-6(4)
On a day when as many as the of the top 8 seeds won and lost, fifth seeded Davenport managed to keep herself in the winning half of them, however only just. Davenport was able to overcome tricky Klara Koukalova 5-7 6-3 7-6(4) to reach the Round of 16. "Yeh, you know, it really wasnt my best tennis. I really need to be focused to win ad today i was all over the place. All i know is that I am going to have to improve. Its straight to the practice courts."
Half of the top seeds were not succesful in the Round of 32, and were sent packing to practice for next weeks Grand Slam. Defending Australian Open Champion and winner of Bejing earlier this season, Martina Hingis, lost in her first match for the second week in a row, but still looks key to defned her Grand Slam title. Tatiana Golovin, the newly ranked 4th in the world and last weeks winner was also dumped out in the Round of 32. They were joined by both world numbers 1 and 3, Clijsters and Ivanovic.
Davenport next faces 12th seeded Palkina for a spot in the quater-finals.

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/514/212320022004elia2.jpg
7th seed Silvia Farina Elia moved into the 3rd round with extreme ease after defeating Patty Schnyder for the lose of only 5 games 6-2 6-3 and now faces Daniela Hantuchova. After struggling through her 1st round match, the highest seed left in the top half of the draw really showed her A game - hitting winner after winner from the back of the court and completely outplaying the swiss in every department.
Farina Elia said 'That was more of a practise session. Patty tried but I was simply too good for her. Maybe its because she looks up to me and was a big match for her, I dont know? I am just happy to go through and am looking forward to facing Daniela in the next round'

Pierce Rallies; Into the Quarterfinals
http://www.tennisrulz.com/players/pierce/gallery/mp11.jpg
Mary Pierce saluting her box after defeating Alexandra Stevenson at the Commonwealth Bank Challenge.
Kooyong, AUSTRALIA
Have mercy! New mom Mary Pierce had to draw on her newfound patience as she rallied to defeat feisty American Alexandra Stevenson 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to her first quarterfinal.
The unheralded Pierce was thoroughly outplayed and outserved by her American counterpart. Pierce looked overwhelmed as Stevenson put her on the defense. Quickly falling down 0-5, Pierce fought off three break points, but couldn't break a hot serving Stevenson. After only 26 minutes of play, Pierce found herself down a set and searching for answers.
"I don't know. I just was so lost out there. Alexandra was serving so well and taking me out of my game. I just couldn't get a play on the ball, really. So, she deserves credit."
At 2-4, Pierce started firing back. She was the one who started to dictate from the baseline. At 6-5, Pierce took advantage of an error-filled Stevenson service game. At 15-40, Pierce sealed the set with a blistering crosscourt backhand winner.
Déjà Vu occured in the third set as Stevenson served to stay in the match with Pierce again making her pay for her errant groundstrokes. Pierce nailed a backhand winner, this time down the line.
"I don't know what to say right now. I'm so happy to be in the quarterfinals. That is my goal in my first year is to make the quarterfinals, be consistent. I'm not in the ideal shape I'd like to be in. Despite that, I do have more confidence. Hopefully, I can build upon it."
Mary will face her sternest test yet, she will play no. 8 Sonya Jeyaseelan for a place in the semifinals.
"Obviously, I expect Sonya to be a tough match. She's crafty and covers court pretty well. So, I have my hands full. I feel I'm up for the challenge."
*Joey* Apr 21st, 2006, 03:24 AM Hantuchova into Quarter!! :bounce:
Today, Daniela Hantuchova made an other upset in this tournament. Effectively, Daniela defeated the 7th seeded player Silvia Farina-Elia by the score of 7-6(1) and 6-3. At the beginning of the match, Hantuchova took the lead with a 3-0 advance. She broke back again the Italian player and then she won her game, so the Slovak girl took the lead of the first set by the score of 5-0. Suddenly, Silvia woke up and won 5 games in a row. Hantuchova was very dissapointed to blow up a big chance like that. So, the two girls fight very hard and won their own serve to go in a tie-break. Daniela was very concentrate and was playing very well during this tie-break and won the first set 7-6(1). ''I played very well at the beginning and I was believing in my game, in my shots and I wasn't making a UE's. Then, the linemen began their bad jobs, they were taking wrong decision about the linecall. When Silvia came back in the first, I was very affraid to lose this set. But, I fought very hard and I won the set.'' said Hantuchova.

Dani was disappointed when Silvia came back
The second set was more easy for Hantuchova. The Slovak girl was dominating Silvia. Daniela reaches her first quarterfinal in a such big event. She will next face a new comer, Julia Schruff. Schruff made the biggest upset of the tournament by defeating Kim Clijsters. ''I am very happy to be in quarter this week. You know, after my first round loss last week, I wasn't expecting to have a great week like this. So, that means a lot to me. In the second set, Silvia was playing well but she made too many mistakes so I took the opportunity to close out the match in straight sets. This is my first victory in straight sets this week and I am quite happy of it! In my quarter match, I will have to face the SENSATION of the tournament. I don't know what to expect from her and I never saw her playing tennis. So I will talk with my great trainer about the strategy I'm gonna use. I am just hoping that my week won't stop in quarterfinals. I will arrive on the court with a positive attitude and with confidence. It should be a great and though match!'' said Hantuchova to the press conference.

*Jool* Apr 21st, 2006, 06:12 AM Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada reached the quarter -finals after a rainy day in Kooyong ,Australia. The number 8 ranked player in the world dispatched in two tie-breakers , Chinese Li Ting 76(0) 76(1). By the way, with the upset of Silvia Farina Elia, Jeyaseelan is the only seed remaining in the top half. She'll face Frenchwoman Mary Pierce in Quarters. "All my matches on this tour are pretty closed. Experience and nervosity are what counts to close out the sets. And today I played like I like to play : it was a fairly balanced game, and Li was aggressive. Like in Beijing, she made me run for my money, but she sorta faell apart in the decisive points, it's the 4th tie-breakers I won, against dfay this year in two matches. I expect Mary Pierce to be a tough opponent too, she is very powerful, but I'll have to make her run a lot . Maybe th ephysical side will be the key today ."
Jeyaseelan also reached quarters in doubles, winning for the very first time two matches in a row with partner Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, upsetting 7th seeded team of Kuznetsova and Bovina.

Now Dinara is to face her compatriot Elena Dementieva, 9th seed.
"I played really well this week and I'm inspired to go even further. Match with Dementieva will be very important for me. I need gain points to rise in rankings, cause i'm still out of top 50."

Singles 3rd Round: [5] L.Davenport (USA) def.[12] K.Palkina (KGZ) 7-6(3) 7-5
Quater-Final:[5] L.Davenport (USA) def.[2] A.Myskina (RUS) 3-6 7-5 6-1
Fifth seeded Lindsay Davenport was all smiles today after she finished her fourth match. With an early start, Davenport defeated 12th seeded Palkina 7-6(3) 7-5 before her and Hingis dominated their win over D.Hantuchova/F.Pennetta 6-4 6-4. It was back to the locker room and practice before her later matches. She was set to face second seeded Myskina in the quater-finals.
"Its weird having to play Myskina this early. We have played twice before and they have been in finals and semi-finals, but never in the quaters. Its a shame, but good luck to her".
http://www.nrk.no/img/415457.jpeg
After fighting back from a set down in their match, the score was leveled at a set all. Myskina taking the first 6-3, and Davenport fighting back in the second to take it 7-5. After clawing back in that set, Davenport was on a roll and it was tough for Myskina to find her form that she had just half an hour ago. Davenport blasted winners to take the match 3-6 7-5 6-1 and move into the semi-finals."I just want to say well played Myskina. We are in Melbourne next week and she will be a real contender because she has been hitting the ball really well. Hopefully I can conitnue my good form here and keep moving on. Elena is a really tough player to play, you have seen her fight back and win in tiebreak sets, Im just hoping to play my solid game and come through"
In the semi-finals, Davenport faces 9th seeded Dementieva, and in the doubles her and Martina face A.Ivanovic/A.Rodionova after they defeated third seeded A.L.Groenefeld/P.Schnyder 7-5 6-3.

Farina Elia Fan Apr 21st, 2006, 10:34 AM Farina Elia Fails AGAIN!
http://www.tennisrulz.com/players/farina/gallery/083.jpg
7th seed Silvia Farina Elia was sent packing in the third round of the Commonwealth Bank Challenge by new girl Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets 7-6 6-3. Farina Elia never looked comfortable out there but was still in the match. This was a poor loss for Farina Elia has she was the highest remaining seed in the top half of the draw at the time. The Italian will need to step her game up for the up and coming Australian Open.
Silvia said 'Surpisie Surpisie, I lost! As soon as it looks good for me - I choke. Every single tournament nearly. I HATE being the highest ranked player on tour without a title and Im feeling the pressure. After Schnyder, when I looked at the draw - I fancied my chances. I really dont know what to do anymore. I have a lot of points to defend on the clay, which is added pressure. Also, doubles is going awful as well'
