SYDNEY, Australia - Russian No.1 Anastasia Myskina returns to tennis this week at the commencement of the Medibank International in Sydney. Myskina, 22, is the reigning champion, having defeated Lucie Safarova in the final last year.

Despite losing her opening match of the season at the Fed Cup against Alicia Molik 7-5, 3-6 7-5, Myskina says the best is yet to come.

"I'm a different person this season," said Myskina. "I feel more relaxed, you know, even if I am the defending champion,"

Myskina meets Ting Li or Francesca Schiavone in her opening match. Myskina and Li previously met at Wimbledon last year, in Li's debut match. Schiavone and Myskina are yet to face each other on the tour.

"I think, maybe, Schiavone would be a good opener for me," said Myskina. "She has a very different game so it would be an exciting match,"

Meanwhile, the doubles world No.1 has split with Daniela Hantuchova, despite winning the Australian Open and French Open Grand Slams last year. Myskina teams up with fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva as the fifth seeds at the tournament.

"It was a pleasant conversation, you know. Daniela and I just felt it was time to go our seperate ways," said Myskina. "It's exciting to be playing with someone different."

Anna-Lena Through to the Second Round

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/659/21238385739groenefeld.jpg
A focused Groenefeld took the court today, and won.

Sydney, Australia - Anna-Lena Groenefeld, the world's 23rd-ranked player from Germany, advanced the Round of 32 today with a come-from-behind 6-7(5) 6-2 7-5 win over the home-crowd favorite Jelena Dokic.

Serving well and staying focused throughout, the German closed out the match in 2 hours and 25 minutes. Though she suffered a slight lapse in the first set tiebreak, she recovered well to take the second set in less than half an hour. The third set, however, was a dog-fight until the bitter end.

However, showing her newfound confidence, the German showed that she is more determined than ever to succeed on the tour, finally breaking the Australian for the game, set, and match.

"I'm so happy right now to have pulled through," Groenefeld said after her match. "Jelena made me work out there today."

Anna-Lena Groenefeld next faces doubles partner Patty Schnyder. This is somewhat uncharted territory for the German, as she seems more consistent now than ever.

"Patty will be hard," she said. "But I just have to keep up my focus. I'm winning matches that I've lost last year but should've won."

"Things are finally looking up, win or lose."

ERRATIC BOVINA WINS!

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/627/21239334735bovina.jpg

In Beijing last week, we saw Elena Bovina crashed out in a horror show against Althea “old ugly dog” Gibson in straight sets. She still have the same strategy and nothing improved her games or change to plan B when she played Ashley Harkleroad today in Sydney and still manage to win a match!

Bovina is happy to explain why she won the match: “Well, I know her, you know her and everyone know how fat she is. She played really awful today and hardly moves at all. That’s right, I said she don’t move an inch but she got that excellent serve! I can’t recall if I actually broke her serve today but there you go.”

Flavia Pennetta happy with LTT debut

Flavia Pennetta, 25, won her first round match at the LTT Qantas International, taking out number 13 seed Angela Haynes of America. The striking Italian began the match in style, dominating the first set with solid baseline play and clever angles.

The second set was a tighter affair, with Flavia showing some signs of nerves towards the end of the second set, but she pulled herself together to take the match 62 75 and goes on to face Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne.

'I am happy with my results so far this year, they have not been spectacular, but they are certainly something to build on. I lost to eventual champion Koukalova last week, so do not feel so bad about that loss and I am making progess here. '

"So, now I'm not a total failure."
Schnyder Scores First Win; Groenefeld Next

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/539/21238811529schnyder.jpg

Sydney, AUS - Patty Schnyder has scored her first singles win of the year, here at the Qantas International. Taking on 14th seed Monica Seles, Schnyder says that she had a hidden confidence inside of her, knowing she would win. Schnyder was a 6-4, 6-4 winner.

"It feels nice to get a win. So, now I'm not a total failure. I lost first round here last year, so this is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, I can keep this up. I will have to be so alert in my next match; it won't be easy." Schnyder said.

Next up for Schnyder is her German doubles partner, Anna-Lena Groenefeld. Together, the pair reached the Final last week in Beijing, while Groenefeld reached the Quarterfinals in singles. She comes into this match riding a wave of confidence.

"It will be so tough to play Anna-Lena. We are such great friends, on and off the court, and I wish her the best. We did great last week in Beijing, and I picked up some things in her game. Maybe our relationship can help me." Schnyder said.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/Jeyaseelan04.jpgSonya Jeyaseelan of Canada shines on the court of Sydney

She highlighted the first day of action as all the 7 first seeded players got byes. She was the highest ranked player in action on the courts today, and she did not fail to her mission winning convincingly 63 63 against Indonesian Angelique Widjaja . " I gained confidence last week in Beijing , but you know guys how I am always anxious at the beginning of a tournament. That loss to Foretz really made me feel very prudent now . I know everything can happen. I was tired , but still it was a big shock for me that day. I'm glad I could play good today and escaped a tough match , it's a good way to enter this tournament"

In the press conference , Jeyaseelan talked about her fellow tour players , and these are amusing quotes of her:

"I am kinda scared of Elena Bovina. I don't know why. She seems to always be on my back , I think she worships me , don't know why, she expects us to be good friends. Our coaches get along well , I know that . But I don't know her very well personnally , I only know she had clashes with my friend Althea Gibson so I don't think we can become the better friends on tour. "

"Some players have really cute coaches, so I always cheer for them , just to be able of seeing their coaches a bit longer during the tournaments . " *grins* :hehehe:

"Of course I have friends on tour. Who hasn't ? *cough* Retired Sharapova maybe ? [Jeyaseelan shared an anecdote about a match she had against Sharapova when the blonde tennager hit her in the face and didn't apologize nor asked whether she was ok while she was receiving treatment on court ]
My friends are always very warm and we like to share a good bottle of wine , especially rosé or champagne , or go and visit the cities we play in together when we have time. "

"My favourite to win the title? Humm, tough question. Hingis impressed me in Beijing , but I think the whole top 15 can win the whole thing. [...] A darkhorse? Mmm, there are several : Maleeva strikes to my mind but she has to improve her mental game against top players."

Kremer Lives To Fight Another Day!

http://www2.raisport.rai.it/news/sport/tennis/200204/09/3cb310e0054e4/AnneKremer2.jpg

Luxembourgs Anne Kremer picked up her first win of the new year by defeating the 37 ranked Azarenka of Bulgaria. Anne is ranked 46 and was happy afterwards, as she signed autographs for the crowd and hit autographed balls into the stadium. Anne spoke at the press conference;

How do you feel to win?
You know, it feels great. I was really hoping I could become a top 30 or top 40 player when I reached the US quarterfinals last year, I proved I am not and there are a lot of areas for me to work on in my game but I don't think I will ever be number one. That fortnight in america was crazy but that is in the past. I have to look at the present now.

You Haven't got any points to defend this year untill the US Open, do you think that will be of help?
Yes, you know I just can concentrate on myself. I am never going to be in the spotlight as number one in the world, but I am going to keep concentrating.

How was your win today? Did it feel good?
Yes, I haven't won a match for a while so it was rewarding feeling. She is ranked higher than me and is much younger so obviously she will be a future star for this tour, she plays at a high level at such a young age. It is a good win.

What are your aims for this year?
I would just be happy with the simple aim of being able to stick in the top 50 this year. More girls are joining the tour so top 50 would be nice.

And finally your match tomorrow against Jeyaseelan, what are your thoughts?
Well, she has a really complete game, she is one of the nice girls on the tour. Ijust want to give a good account of myself really which I hope I do.[/CENTER

Amélie Mauresmo Squeaks
by the Russian Vixen Maria Sharapova

http://us.news3.yimg.com/us.i2.yimg.com/p/rids/20060330/i/r1385135728.jpg
The Frenchwoman really had to tough it out against
the spirited onslaught of groundstrokes by the Russian teen.

Sydney, Australia - Amélie Mauresmo barely got through a match that was marred by numerous bathroom breaks, incessant grunting and stares downs. In fact, the twelth seed needed three sets, 4-6 7-6(4) 7-5, to defeat the young Russian starlet.

"Her groundstrokes are really impressive, that's for sure. I had to mix it up quite a bit, then things went my way. But it's still the beginning of the season, you know. At this point, I'm still trying to get back into some kind of rythm. As for the other stuff that happened, I do not wish to start any sort of controversy. I mean it's no secret the type of player she really is, ask my friend Sonya about it. Anyhow, I'm already thinking about my next match."

Next, Mauresmo is indeed scheduled to meet another Russian player, Anna Chakvetadze. Their previous meeting went the Frenchwoman's way.

"I played her once, so I know a little bit about her game. She's definitely a player I will not take lightly. We'll see how it goes. Today's match took a lot out of me though."

Sydney, Australia. Magdalena Maleeva from Bulgaria defeated the young Sania Mirza from India in a 3 tight sets battle. She will now face Dinara Safina from Russia, who won over the 16th seed Iveta Benesova 6-3 4-6 6-3. It will be the 1st meeting between the 2 girls.

Dementieva Eliminates Mandula In Sydney
http://dementieva.ru/downloads/catimages/1834_image.jpg
Eleventh seeded Elena Dementieva secured a 7-5 7-6 (1) win over Petra Mandule at the Qantas International in Sydney, Australia.

Elena Dementieva, the eleventh ranked Moscuvite with a thunderous forehand, downed Hungarian Petra Mandula in a close straight set match, spraying 12 double faults before closing the match on a mighty backhand for a 7-5 7-6 (1) victory. Dementieva had her usual early round troubles, as the match stretched a surprising 1 hour and 55 minutes. The Russian records her first win of the season.

"I am pretty happy to be in the second round. This is the first time I have any significant amount of points to defend, you know, so it's good to get my first win of the year here. I played real sloppy, but a win is a win, and at this point in the year, I don't expect to play my best, so I'll take it, you know."

Myskina Wins First Match of Season.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41108000/jpg/_41108209_myskina203.jpg http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40812000/jpg/_40812154_schiavone203.jpg

Defending champion Anastasia Myskina struggled past Francesca Schiavone 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the Medibank International on Wednesday.

The world No.2 lost the first set before clawing her way back and crusing in the decider.

"I started the match just making too many errors," said Myskina. "She was consisent where I needed to be. I started hitting the ball, you know, harder and try to get her to hit an extra ball,"

"I think as the match continued, I played better as I became more comfortable on the surface. [Schiavone] is very quick on the court and she mixes up ball well, so it tough, you know,"

"But it was my first match, so I'm not going to critisise anything I did. I'm glad to start the season with a win like this," said Myskina.

Last year's US Open champion is the second seed and amongst the favourites to win the title along with top seed Kim Clijsters and world no.3 Ana Ivanovic.

Myskina will play Justine-Henin-Hardenne for a place in the semifinals.

Lovehandles-girl through to 3rd round!

http://www.tinthethao.com.vn/images/images404035_golovin.jpg

Queen of lovehandles, miss Tatiana Golovin, keeps on playing very solid tennis. Golovin is through to the 3rd round after recieving a bye in the first round and taking out Ai Sugiyama 3 and 4.
"I play my best tennis at the moment. I feel really good on court, and the balls like me a lot, I guess. It's really awesome. It's like, a higher power has connected me and tennis, there's just some undescribable love, yeah. It's so beautiful. Each time I walk on court, I just feel high and funky, and I just wanna kiss my racket and hug the balls. I feel like floating on a pink sky, in the yellow heaven. Everything is just so nice and in colours"
-was Miss. Golovins comment to how she felt on court!

Davenport Downs Dubois: Into Next Round

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2005/20050114/sp.jpg
Davenport discussed the season so far with the press after the match.

(4)Lindsay Davenport (USA) def. Stephanie Dubois (CAN) 6-4 4-6 6-4

World number 4 Lindsay Davenport defeated Stephanie Dubois in the second round at Sydney to advance into the Round of 32, where she faces Russain Elena Bovina.

Davenport took the opening set 6-4 before the Canadian bounced back by the same margin, then Davenport surged ahead 5-2 before dropping two games. The Wimbledon Champion finally closed the match out on th her fifth match point when Dubois netted a forehand.

"I would say positive, said Davenport after being asked how she felt. "You know, the start of the season was bad for me, the whole Fed Cup incident was just terrible, and I think i didnt really benefit from anything last week, but this week im feeling better. It always seems to take me a few tournaments to get into my stride, but i think this season it could be different. Im feeling healthy, won a title last week, so who knows.

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/photo/content/sports/photos/popups/2005_fed_cup/images/086.jpg
Americans biggest tennis fan, Golovin's Grandmother, cheered on Lindsay during the second round.

Davenport holds a 2-0 lead in her head to head with Bovina. The last time the pair played was on route to Davenports third title at the Tier 1 event in Moscow at the end of last season.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld Through to R16 Again

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/659/ALG_pump.jpg
Anna-Lena gives a fist pump after winning a crucial point in the second set.

Sydney, Australia - Anna-Lena Groenefeld pulled off another great win, this time against great friend and doubles partner Patty Schnyder in three extremely tight sets, 6-4 5-7 7-5. This win pushes Groenefeld into the Round of 16 of yet another tournament, where she will face the Goddess of LTT: World #1 Kim Clijsters.

In a match that lasted just over 3 hours, both players played with their hearts on their sleeves, willing to leave everything on the court, win or lose. Featuring long, draining rallies and screams of disappointment and triumph, the match didn't seem like it was ever going to end. However, it was Groenefeld who clinched it on her 8th ace of the match.

"I am just totally ecstatic right now," she said. "I can't believe it, it was an awesome match with Patty."

The German now faces the world #1 Kim Clijsters, who, since last season, has dominated the tour with consistent and crushing results. Anna-Lena will face a very tough battle, and there is no saying that she won't lose. However, even as the huge underdog, the German is giving herself a chance.

"I have nothing to lose tomorrow," she discussed. "I'm just going to do what I normally do, but regardless, I'm sure we'll have a great match tomorrow."

Tomorrow, the German also takes the doubles court as the #4-ranked team of Anna-Lena Groenefeld/Patty Schnyder. Both will be looking to advance to the quarterfinals and do better this week than their final appearance last week.

Anna-Lena Shocks #1, Moves to Quarters a Second Time

http://image.muzi.com/pfm_image/203065829942986.jpg
Groenefeld looks at her box in disbelief as she shocks the world #1, Kim Clijsters.

Sydney, Australia - No matter what happens the remainder of this week, Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany can already say that this has been the tournament of her life. Today, she added yet another chapter to this fairy-tale story as she upset the world #1, Belgian Kim Clijsters, in two hard-fought sets 7-6(6) 6-4.

The match started well with both players fighting evenly. On the German side, people could see that she had improved very much during the offseason. Running faster and hitting more offensive shots, Anna-Lena did not let the power of Kim Clijsters get to her, and she held her ground even during the tiebreak, though she has had a history of choking.

The second set, another tight battle ensued, with the German finally sealing victory on her 4th match point during an extremely long service game for the match.

As the final ball sailed long, the German looked to her box, in total disbelief.

"I wasn't sure if this was a dream or something," Groenefeld later said. "It's like a dream come true to beat the world #1. Kimmy is such a great player, and I had to work very hard for the victory."

The German also spoke about her recent success, crediting her coach, fans, and support from the tour players as well.

"You know, everyone's been very supportive of me lately," she said. "They helped me get through a rough time trying to do well and be more consistent, but their faith in me has helped me a lot."

The German will make her second appearance in a tour quarterfinal this year, facing Australian Samantha Stosur, an upset winner over 8th-seeded Sonya Jeyaseelan of France.

"Whatever happens tomorrow, happens tomorrow," she said. "But nobody can take away the triumph that I've experienced already this week."

Unknown MOLIK into QF!
A L I C I A resurrection.

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/647/21237111171molik.jpg

I am so trill into the QF, I guess as an unknown player like me I have nothing to lose and just play my best out there and don't give up easily, keep fighting to the end.

Honestly, I think time to move on, I had very bad season 1 (few injuries and coaching problem) but new season "NEW ALICIA!" watch out for me girls, I will make my move all the way up to the top.

This season, my new and current soubles partner is Sesil Karatancheva, and we hoping to do well as well.

As a player, I always try to set and achieve my goal, this season I really would like to be one of TOP 10 player (single and doubles) also to qualify to the YEC Championships. Nothing is impossible for me, I will always try and work my hard to fulfill my dream of becoming future player, that way people would recognise me.

Maggie into quarters

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/012.jpg

Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva, who turned 31 ten days ago, defeats 3rd seed Ana Ivanovic from Serbia for a place in the quarterfinals on Friday at the Qantas International in Sydney. Maleeva needs 89 minutes to end the match 6-4, 7-5.

Question : At the start of the match, did you think you could beat Ana?
MM: Um, Yeah. But I wasn't thinking about it. I was just thinking not to do mistakes that I have done before, and I was thinking to play point by point, I was just trying to play good.

Question : All week long I've watched you. You've been very focused this week and practicing very hard, and you were ready mentally.
MM: Yes. Definitely. Mentally, I am ready, now more than ever!

Question: Your next opponent is Alicia Molik. Do you know her?
MM: We've played once in Miami last year, in the third round, and she beat me in 3 sets, 4-6 7-5 7-5 if I remember well. But at that time I just returned, you know, it was only my 4th tournament. Now things have changed! Alicia is a great player but I really think I have my chances. May the better win!

Question: How do you feel after your loss in doubles with Sonya Jeyaseelan?
MM: Of course I'm sad, Sonya is one of my best friends on the tour and we have good time playing together. But I think we are improving by comparison with last year, and yeah, I'm sure we will have better results in the future. ;)

Sam Edges into Quarters

http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/622/12003-ausopen110.jpg

Sam Stosur joined countrymen ALicia Molik into the QuarterFinals with a tough 3 set win over #8 seed Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada. Sam won the match 6-4 4-6 7-5.

until this week she had only won a handful of matches this week she has already defeated Venus Williams into addition to Sonya Jeyaseelan. For Sam the future is looking bright if she can keep this form up.

Of course it helps with home crowd support coming from Queensland. Sydney is her closest event so she has a lot of home support this week and she is building in stature as each match goes

"I'm exhuasted"

http://www.ana-ivanovic.net/gallery/albums/Linz05/normal_linz15.jpg

Ana Ivanovic crashed out of Sydney after losing to Magdalena Maleeva in staright sets, 6-4 7-5. Ana had a horrible start to the season by just winning one match in 3 tournaments.

"I'm physically and mentally exhausted. It started after Year-End Champs and I even skipped the exhibition to recapture my fire and stamina to play. But now, I'm just totally tired and unmotivated. I understand how Myskina feels. The season is too long and it's very difficult to perform in every tournament I play in."

When asked about her plans for the future,

"I have major points to defend. I don't expect to gain any points from now on. I don't really have a plan now. I'll just continue plugging away. Hopefully I can capture my hunger to win again."

Davenport Avoids Day of Upsets

http://peninsulaclarion.com/images/041204/davenport.jpg

(4)Lindsay Davenport (USA) def. Elena Bovina (RUS) 5-7 6-4 6-4

Earlier today Lindsay Davenport became the highest seed left in the tournament after coming back from a set down to defeat Elena Bovina 5-7 6-4 6-4. The three set match put Davenport into the quater-finals to face french-woman Tatiana Golovin. The sixth seed downed Anna Chakvetadze 6-2 4-6 6-0. The pair have met only twice, with Davenport winning on both occasions. The last time they faced off was Antwerp at the end of last season.

[4]L.Davenport (USA)
E.Bovina (RUS)
5-7 6-4 6-4

Questions for Lindsay please.

Q. Lindsay, how did the win feel today?
Davenport: Well it felt good. Even though I went a set down I knew I could win because we have played some close matches in the past, so I knew it was possible to come through.

Q. Clijsters, Myskina, Ivanovic and Jeyaseelan all were beaten in that Round, how did you feel going into your match knowing that?
Davenport: Well I knew about Kim and Ana before I went on, because they were scheduled before me, but I didnt know about Myskina or Jeyseelan until after my match. Yeh its really suprising, I think everyone has been finding it hard this season because there is so much depth on tour that each match it as important as the next, whether it be the first round or final.

Q. Some interesting quater-final line-ups. The most intriguing is you and Golovin. When you see the ranking of the other 6 quater-finalists and then you seed the number 4 and 6 seeds having to play, how does that make you feel?
Davenport: You know, thats tennis, and even though we may be the highest ranked or seeded players left in the draw, thats the way tennis works and that is why it is so fun and interesting, but the other players have definetly deserved their place in the draw. You know, for Justine, Gronefeld and Maggie it is fantastic, and I bet this is only the start of bigger things to come.

Q. Were you suprised about Hingis losing in Round 1?
Davenport: You know, i think that is her style. Win a title and then lost the next match. Its always disspointing when she loses because she is just a key player to have in the draw and play against.

http://www.bnr.nl/blobs/anp/20956.jpg

Q. You have some great rivalries on tour with some players, more so than others, but it seems as though you have nearly played everyone, except Hingis.
Davenport: Haha, yeh thats interesting actually. Its very weird how we havent played yet, you know, its been a whole season and a bit and we still havent met each other. We practice together all the time, and obviously play doubles, you know, we won the title last week so it is going to happen sooner or later. Im really hoping we play soon, and I know that when we do it will be great.

Q. Well Lindsy good luck in your next match, and we hope you get your first singles title of Season 2 here.
Davenport: Thank you.

Sonya Jeyaseelan fell to crowd favorite Samantha Stosur in a tough three-setter , 64 46 75. Jeyaseelan was really upset by this loss, adding to her frustration nother tough loss in doubles 67 75 62 to fellow Canadian Dubois and Italian Farina Elia. :

"I know my coach had bad vibes about this match. He had a feeling she would play out of her mind, like she did against Williams. She played ok , but it's a match I should have won. I'm angry because I didn't take his advice seriously. I was feeling ok today, but Stosur has a unique game. Strong serve and great aggressivity. I tried to rally in the match , but in the third, she had the crowd cheering for her , and she played better . I really hate myself when I lose matches I should win, but it's life, one can not win every match. Still, I'm very disappointed and angry at myself. These up-and-downs are getting on my nerves. I should get and see a psycho to solve the problems.I'm also very sad we lost the doubles with Maggie because we had the match in our hands and let it slip away . Bad day , really bad day. I'm moving to Melbourne right now ."
