UDACHi Apr 2nd, 2006, 12:36 AM Dementieva Gearing Up For Season 2
http://dementieva.ru/downloads/catimages/2674_image.jpg
Elena Dementieva is seen hitting a forehand in Beijing, China.
Twelfth ranked Elena Dementieva has practiced harder than ever for the second season of the Ladies Tennis Tour, and the Russian will look to make an even more severe impact on the tour than she did as the first season came to a close, when she won the Zurich championship and reached the quarterfinals of the Year Ending Championships.
"I'm very proud, you know, of how I was able to step it up at the end of last year. I'd like to accomplish even bigger things this year, you know. Top ten would be nice. I'd like to be a little more consistent this year, definitely. I mean, last year I had quite a bit of trouble winning matches on clay, which is one of my best surfaces, and it was basically because I wasn't really very confident, you know. I am very confident heading into this season and I won my singles match in Fed Cup, so I'm ready to go, you know."
Dementieva opens her campaign for a title at the Tier 2 Motorola Cup, in Beijing, China against Stephanie Dubois, a consistent Canadian.
Last week, in Federation Cup competition, Russia 1, captained by Dementieva, was defeated 4-1 by Australia, an upset to say the least. Dementieva was the only singles winner, defeating Sam Stosur in two tight sets, 7-6 (6) 6-2.
*Jool* Apr 2nd, 2006, 12:37 AM Steph, aren't you tired of Russians already .?

iPatty. Apr 2nd, 2006, 12:51 AM Schnyder Prepares for Beijing
"It won't be easy."
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/paris0612.jpg
Patty last week in Fed Cup
Beijing, China -- AP -- Patty Schnyder, recent Doubles Semifinalist in Madison Square Garden, will open her Season Two campaign on the LTT in Beijing, China. She says she is looking forward to competing again, after the end of Season One.
"I'm just pumped to be back, you know? I had a very relaxing time in the Seychelles with my friends, but it's time to get back to business. We are all just itching to get started."
The tour's newest addition, The Federation Cup, was held last week in Perth, Australia. Patty was part of the Swiss team, alongside teammate Martina Hingis. Patty, the captain, won her first singles match against Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva, before falling to Sesil 'Guillermo' Karatantcheva. Switzerland ended up winning the Tie 3-2.
"I was happy last week to get a win over Maggie, because she is a very tough player. After Martina and I won the doubles, we were just having some fun on Day 3. I wouldn't take those losses too seriously," Patty said with a wink.
This week, at the Motorola Cup, Patty will open against dangerous Russian Anastassia Rodionova, a friend of hers. If she were to get through that match, then she would play Number Two Seed, Ana Ivanovic. Patty has no points to defend from last year, as she lost in the first round.
In doubles, she will being her hopeless journey with German choke artist, Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

TomTennis Apr 3rd, 2006, 05:13 PM Another Season; Another Beijing; Another Winner?
- Tournament Preview -
As Season 1 rolled on down to a close, the players headed off home for a month to re-energise, relax, return to their families and friends or hit the courts for more practice. Now, it has been eagerly anticipated, the return of LTT for another Season of highs, lows, tears, tantrums and triumphs. Its Beijing, back for another go!
http://english.people.com.cn/200409/05/images/0904_C32.jpg
The biggest tennis stadia in Asia. Tickets have been sold out after only 2 days on sale. A great setting for the start of the new season
The singles and doubles draw are made, and with the majority of players entering this tournament over the smaller one in New Zealand, players are anticipating their first round matches. Absent from the draw is former world number 1 Myskina, who, unfortunatley is taking some time off for personal reasons. Despite being the top seed for the marjority of last season, and also scooping up the US Open Grand Slam title, she found losses hard to take and is re-couperating with her coach to come back stronger than ever.
The draw this week features some potentially very exciting quater-finals, however, as we all know, seeds tend to come and go, and with the amazing depth that the tour offers, it is just as likey to have an unseeded quater-final line-up as having all 8 seeds making the cut.
Defenging Champion Martina Hingis returns as the only victor to have ever won in China. Crowned the world number 1 at the end of the tournament, she kept her fantastic start of the season going through the Australian Open, and then to Monte Carlo. After that, she struggled with form and didnt win another title, the question is can she hold off the strong competition from the rest of the field and take home her trophy? We last saw the tour in Madison Square garden and Dubai, where the season came to a massive climax with some of the best matches all year taking place. Everyone is hoping to re-discover their form and continue to strive for victory here in Bejing.
The Seeds 1-4 and the Draw
Number 1 Seed; Kim Clijsters (BEL)
http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/3103/212321022004clijsters2.jpg
One of only two players to end the year with a victory, taking home her second title of the year back to Belgium. A grand slam champion, winner of the season 1 French Open and year end champion, she looks set to reach at least the final here in Beijing. A potential 2nd round match against American Haynes, and then a possible quater-final with Sonya Jeyaseelan could make things mighty difficult, but if anyone can be consistent and play her best tennis when its needed, its Clijsters.
Top Quater: Russain Elena Dementieva is a dangerous player for Dubois. Clijsters must first pass tricky player Smashnova who can keep a ball in play for hours, the winner of that faces either Haynes or fellow American Alexandra Stevenson, who despite missing last weeks Fed Cup campaign, has been training hard over the off season, and should be seen as a very dangerous floater in the top section of the draw. Wild Card Ling represents the home country and willl certainly be crowd favourite and a feature on the show court no matter the opponent, her first round is against seventh seeded Jeyseelan.
Number 2 Seed; Ana Ivanovic (BEL)
http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/3213/21238598250ivanovic.jpg
The award for most consistent player easily enters the hands of Ivanovic. Despite not winning a slam last year, she finished at ranked number 3 and remains a very formidable force. She reached the final of the Australian Open and also scoopped a title a few weeks later, so it is clear that she starts out the year in style. Venus Williams is at the other end of the draw, and lets hope both palyers make it to the quaters so the show-down can happen.
Bottom Quater: Swiss Miss number 2 Patty Schynder takes on Rodionva. The swiss lefty played some good tennis last year but ended the season poorly, and looks set to start it well. V.Williams takes on wild card Maleeva, who, despite not being seeded, won two titles last year, and very difficult first round match for Venus. Recent new arrival and massive threat to this quater is Maruesmo, who played some amazing tennis and beat some amazing players from the start of her joining. Bottom Quater is packed fun, excitment and talent.
Number 3 Seed; Lindsay Davenport (USA)
http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/507/8546503davenport.jpg
Lindsay Davenport ended the year with a title in Moscow before finishing it in Madison Square Garden in the Round Robin section. The grand slam champion did not start off well however, captain of the USA team won her only match however lost by default because of late entry, and really looks set to make up her the mistakes here in Bejing. Davenprt reigned supreme on the Grass last year, losing only 1 match and winning 2 titles, including Wimbledon, however Davenport did not start the year too well, and has a great oppourtunity to gain some ranking points before her favourite surface.
Second Quater: Chakvetadze takes on fifth seeded Golovin. The US Open finalist has been training hard and looks set to be a top 4 player in the next few weeks. Up and down Serena Williams ended the year with a doubles title, yet was very inconsistent in singles. New stratergies and motivation at the start of this year means she will be a force for Benesova, who finished the year high with an appearance at the Year End Champsions. Monica Seles takes on Davenport, who joins V.Williams for the toughest first round match.
Number 4 Seed; Martina Hingis (SUI)
http://blogs.wtnphotos.com/data/501/1hingisozopenpic16.jpg
The defending Champion ended the year at the opposite end of the scale to the start of it. Losing only 1 match in 4 tournaments at the start of last year, no-one would have guessed that Monte Carlo would be her last title. Despite that, she still entered Wimbledon as top seed and held the number 1 ranking for many weeks. She has a lot of points to defend here and in the next few weeks, but as we all know, the swiss miss can do anything she puts her mind to.
Third Quater: Sixth Silvia Farina Elia takes on polish Domachowska in a very tricky first round match. Year End Champion finalist Gibson has been playing some really good tennis and got mighty close to the championships trophy last season, and she faces Russain Elena Bovina, if she can get past that hurdle then a possible intriguing second round match with Hingis may be in the cards, only ig Hingis can stave off Fortrez, who won a doubles title in Dubai. The pick of the unseeded first round matches goes to Henin-Hardenne against Vaidosova. Any player wishes to not play eithers, as they are very dangerous floaters who will have to battle past one another in their opeining match.
- Tournament is due to start soon, so pick up your rackets and get ready for LTT Season 2. -

new-york Apr 4th, 2006, 05:16 AM Good Start for Althea Gibson.
http://img105.imageshack.us/img105/9816/altheawhite9lc.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Defeating Russian Bovina 6-4 6-3, Gibson feels like the Exhibition she played during the break really helped her.
"It was fun, less, pressure, but the same good players and the possibility to train at the same level in better mental conditions, i think this season i'll be smarter, still mainly powerful, but smartly powerful".
As she was resting for a week, waitin to start LTT Season 2, Althea didn't forget to enjoy her outside court life, sometimes with poeple she met on court.
"I definitely had a lot of fun, i'm really happy with the way my life is since i'm on LTT. Tennis is good, my friends are awesome, & i have a big and loving family, what more?
We been partying a lot with Sonya, Maggie, Kirsten, for Sonya being in the top 10, Mag's 2 titles, and Kirsten good beggining, i really made friends out there."
But Althea knows that everything will not be pink as she is to face defending Champion & fourth seed Martina Hingis in the next round.
"I'm not anticipating that much. I can bet seed, i did it. It a huge work to get at their level in a match, i think she will be motivated to defend her title, she got good memories out there, but i think i have the game, i need to focus on what i can do. She is one of the smartest, i will pay attention not to be fooled."
And Althea to add.
"& i'm not even thinking about blonde hair anymore.
hablo Apr 4th, 2006, 05:31 AM congrats, Althea :p

*Jool* Apr 4th, 2006, 08:37 PM Sonya Jeyaseelan set up an all-Canadian premiere clash after Dubois defeated Dementieva, by prevailing in a tough three-setter against Chinese wild-card Li Ting in a 76(0) 36 76(6) win.
"Li was willing to do great in front of her crowd. And that's obviously what she did. She fought hard on each point, she really gave me a good run for my money , I mean, it never was easy today, not one second . Plus, the crowd was really enthusiastic to see her play. It was tough . I had to play my best to close out that match , cause she was leading in the third and really could have win it. I did'nt lose nerves nor patience today , one thing I am proud of because I don't like that much playing in a stressful atmosphere. It s a sign of improvement. I am also glad to meet Steph in round 2. We had good connection last week during Fed Cup, hopefully it will be a good match , and we're sure to have one Canadian in the quarters , which is not so often , so it's a very good thing. " In a devastated draw after Clijsters and Ivanovic 's upsets , and Myskina's withdrawal, Jeyaseelan could do very well here , but she admits she plays her best against tougher opponents and can crumble against so-called weaker ones, so she says :" I'm not planing anything , like always , because I just know everything can happen. I'm starting playing better after a short period when I didn't feel my shots anymore , in HITS and first match of Fed Cup, but it's the beginning of the season, all the players are willing to start strong and everyone plays their best , so all matches are tough. " Asked whether she set new goals for this new season, Jeyaseelan answered : " I want to win a doubles match with Maggie the sooner the better , I want to build up her confidence. It would be great if we could win a title , we won a total of three in singles, but never did well indoubles, I want to improve my doubles game. In singles, my goals are simple and more or less the same ones as last season ,a bit improved though: play the Season-Ending Championships, win a title, and enter the Top 5 . I think I am able to do it, but I 'll have to work harder and harder to become a dominant force on the tour. "

*Jool* Apr 5th, 2006, 08:32 PM The fight between the two Canadian players on LTT Tour was a intriguing, close one , where Jeyaseelan prevailed over Stéphanie Dubois in a 7-6(0) 7-6(5) victory. Both showing great sportmanship , the match was ofof good quality . No observation round between those two who are friends outside the court and whoe went closer last week during the Fed Cup . "We don't know each other that weel , but I think it's a great thing to have a fellow countrywoman playing on the same tour. Fed Cup iwas a very postive experience, and it was a good practice to start the season. I am convinced that Stéphanie , with her experience of doubles and with her advice during the doubles in Perth, helped my team a lot today to win our match. I'm glad Maggie and I finally found a way to win a match , hopefully we won't stop there. "
Both Dubois and Jeyaseelan showed their motivation on the court from the very first game. It was an intense , emotionnal match where both players nearly played their best. Jeyaseelan was really dominant at key points, especially during the tie-break where she showed great maturity to win it 7/0. Dubois reacted strong, taking a 3/0 then 4/1 lead in second set , but her compatriot took the only opportunity she had in this second set to break back . In the second tie-breaker, Jeyaseelan and Dubois really played excellent tennis. Only 1 unforced error were committed by each player in this 7/5 ending tie-breaker. Jeyaseelan remained calm and focus all match long , and Dubois played a solid match that can make her expect more of that season than the first one.
"We both played pretty good today. I think Stéphanie was a bit sick , but she still fought very hard. And then she went back on court courageously for the doubles, I feel sorry for her that she lost both her matches. I guess I just wanted to win more than her , because I have now a seed status , and I can't allow to lose focus and start losing early in the tournaments again. I built up my confidence at the end of last season, I 'd like to keep it as long as possible , I love the game, I love winning matches, I'm obviously not the best player, but it's fun to try and be the better possible, learning from every mistake , battling against these very motivated girls. This tour is really exciting , I'm so glad I joined it . "

http://www.vg.no/bilder/bildarkiv/1127552978.98916.jpg
Beijing, China - Anna-Lena Groenefeld's season couldn't have started any better. With a quick 6-3 6-3 victory in the first round over Amelie Mauresmo, it was clear that she was determined this season to change her results around.
"I've been working hard in the off-season," Groenefeld said after her first round victory. "I'm glad it translated to a win today on the court."
Groenefeld then followed it up with her first Top 10 win over #8 Venus Williams in two sets 6-2 6-4. Though the scoreline shouts an easy match, it was actually a battle of groundies as both players were blasting shots from both corners.
"The thing that made a difference for me today was my defense," Groenefeld said. "I had the power to match it, but Venus always puts her opponents on the defense, and I came up with the goods on the run."
Riding high on confidence, Groenefeld next faces unseeded Anastasia Rodionova of Russia.
"I have played her before and it was a very tough match, for sure," the German said. "However, I feel more confident now, and I will definitely try my hardest tomorrow."
The German also partnered with Swiss friend Patty Schnyder to reach the Quarterfinals in the doubles event as well, facing friends Ksenia Palkina and Elena Dementieva.

*Jool* Apr 6th, 2006, 05:35 PM In a 2 hours 52 minutes match of 16 breaks , Sonya Jeyaseelan survived a 4/2 deficit in the third set to defeat Angela Haynes and reach the semi-finalof Beijing(Tier II) , her first tournament of the season. The Canadian started with a 4/1 and 5/2 lead in the first set , that finally went 6/4 after each player broke again to end the set. In the second set, Haynes broke in the very first game to take a 3/1 lead. From 3/2 Haynes, to 6/5 Haynes, either Haynes nor Jeyaseelan could hold serve, this second set was the longest of the match , it lasted 1 hour and 6 minutes. Up 3/1 and 4/2, Haynes choked to finish the match. But she did take the lead a last time breaking Jeyaseelan's serve at 5 all to serve for the match. But the Candadian player survived a 30/0 deficit to break back (for the eighth time) and took the tie-breaker 7/2 after a 58 minutes set.
In the semi-finals, Sonya Jeyaseelan will meet Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin , who leads their head-to-head by 2 wins to 1 , but lost their last meeting at the Season-Ending Championships.

~Justine/Amelie A Team On A Mission~
http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2006/writers/jon_wertheim/01/29/aussie.open/t1_0129_mauresmo.jpg
Amelie and Justine talk strategy as they change sides.
BEIJING, China--- Justine Henin-Hardenne and Amelie Mauresmo look to be a having a good time after both were dismissed in the first round of singles action. But they have come a long way in the doubles draw, and look to go further. In the Quarter-Finals, J.Henin-Hardenne/A.Mauresmo def. A.Ivanovic/A.Rodionova 6-4 6-4, they take another straight set win and are in the Semi-Finals.
"I think we are playing very well, after our singles troubles. Amelie is a great partner, and she both have good backhands, one handed that is. This is a team to be dreamed of." smiled Justine after their win. Amelie had this to say, "We are definitely playing well, and I know we could take the title if we really wanted it. Right now, you know, we just need to keep focused."
It will be a tough task indeed, as their next opponents will be Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis, the second seeded doubles team. They just came off a tight three set victory, with the final set going to 7-6(8). They have been a doubles team since season one, unlike Amelie and Justine. But this should mean nothing, as Justine and Amelie have been great friends since the beginning of the tour. Good luck Amelie and Justine.

*Jool* Apr 7th, 2006, 04:56 PM Seventh-seeded Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan and fourth-seeded title-holder Martina Hingis of Switzerland will be the finalists of the second Beijing tournament , Hingis winning the first edition last season. Swiss Miss seems to really like this place as she overcome a disappointing period in the second part of the first season to bring her A-game and reach the final once again. She struggled in her initial rounds , but still prevailed over Foretz and Gibson , in very close matches before straight sets wins over Farina Elia and Russian Rodionova. Jeyaseelan first defeated WC Sun Tian Tian in 3 tough sets before dispatching her countrywoman Steph Dubois in two tie-breakers . IN quarters she downed Haynes in an intense three-setters and finally played a second two-setters against Golovin in SF. They have played pretty similar matches .
Martina HINGIS (n.4)
1 + S.Foretz (FRA) 67(6) 75 75
2 + A.Gibson (USA) 76(5) 36 76(4)
QF + S.Farina Elia (ITA,n.6) 76(3) 64
SF + A.Rodionova (RUS) 76(4) 64
Sonya JEYASEELAN (n.7)
1 + Sun T.T. (CHN, WC) 76(0) 36 76(5)
2 + S.Dubois (CAN) 76(0) 76(5)
QF + A.Haynes (USA) 64 57 76(2)
SF + T.Golovin (FRA,n.5) 76(0) 64
Three times this week, Jeyaseelan won the firstset in a tie-breaker in which she did not lose a point. She played and won 6 tie-breakers this week in 4 matches. Hingis played a tie-breaker in all her first sets , but she lost it in the first round. The match will be exciting and probably very close. In their last (and only) meeting , Sonya Jeyaseelan scored one of her best career wins, in the 3rd round of the US Open , 36 62 76. This match was Jeyaseelan's breakthrough and was at the time her most important win .

Martina Hingis serves the third match point that would allow her to win the title
World number 5 Martina Hingis held the title she won one year earlier in Beijing , convincingly defeating world number 10 Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada in a close two-setters of 75 75. Hingis and Jeyaseelan played a good match , very close in the first set. Jeyaseelan was just a little bit too anxious on important points , but they really were battling hard. Hingis finally took the first set 75 after 55 minutes. At the beginning of the second set , Hingis broke to take an early 2/0 lead. But Jeyaseelan chose that moment to play out of her mind and win 5 straight games to lead 5/2. But the machine falled apart as Jeyaseelan was serving at 5/3 to level the match at one set apiece. She committed a double-fault and a silly mistake on a midcourt two-handed backhand volley she hit on the net. She would never recover from these two points. Her rhythm was broken , and Hingis recuperated some forces to stop her opponent's lucky period. Hingis tried to lengthen the points, making Jeyaseelan run all over the court. And soon, Hingis was dictating the match again. Serving for the match at 6/5 , Hingis missed her first two match points , but the third one delivered her after a 1 hour 43 minutes match.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/jeyaseelan_sep20.jpg
Jeyaseelan had difficulties to impose her rhythm all match long. At the end of the match , Hingis was dominant and Jeyaseelan could barely rivalize.
It was the end of the dream for the Canadian player, who admitted she was "nicely surprised " to play a final so early in the season, and had expectations to win a second title after her stunning win in Antwerp, another Tier II event. "It's a good way to start the season. I start this one as I ended the last one, with a bittersweet taste in mouth. But I want to congratulate Martina because she played great today , even when she was in danger , she did not lose focus and came back to win another title. She's a great champion. One can't win every time, I still have to adjust some elements in my game to be more consistent but I'm glad already to have had such results recently" said the runner-up .

Sorry for the lack of participation this week as my internet connection went down last week and I haven't been able to check with the phone company due to Holy Week. Not sure if it's already back.
