Plane strike , Canadian team just arrived in Perth

Canadian team composed of Stéphanie Dubois, and Sonya Jeyaseelan finally landed in Perth after they were retained for 4 days in Ceylan where Jeyaseelan visited her home island, by a plane strike. 3 hours before the beginning of the matches , they put foot in the stadium . Both Canadians are willing to do well for their lovely country in the heat of Australia that looks like holidays after a break in snowy Canada but it's obviously not holidays but hard work that is expecting them.. Belgium's Kim Clijsters defeated Italy's Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in Fed Cup First Round to bring her country back to a 1-1 tie after two singles matches.

Kim Clijsters put on a streaky display to defeat tour newcomer Flavia Pennetta of the Italy 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the First Round of Fed Cup in Perth.

Clijsters, the French Open, YEC Champion and No. 1 in the LTT ranking, took a firm grip of the first set as she started off with a 3-1 lead. Clijsters, 22, needed only 32 minutes to win 6-2 over Italys third-best player in the first set.

In the second set, Pennetta, broke Clijster's serve to gain a 2-1 lead. Although Clijsters then battled back against the unknown Italian to go 4-3 up in the second. But the next three games went against service to give Pennetta the confidence to steal the set from Clijsters 7-5 in 43 minutes after the World No. 1 double-faulted.

As expected Clijsters again took a firm 3-1 lead in the third set. After that, her road to victory was easy and she finished off the match without problems to level the tie at 1 match a piece.

Although obviously happy to secure a win for Belgium, Clijsters was left frustrated with the inconsistent nature of her performance.

"It was so streaky and that frustrates me more than anything," said Clijsters. "I started out playing well, then I let up and the next thing I knew I was in a tough match in the third set."

"I guess I was expecting a better consistent performance for my country, it's something i'll definately work on with the girls over the next couple of days."

In Wednesday's opening match with the Belgium vs Italy tie, Italy's top player Silvia Farin-Elia defeated Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne 6-4 6-7(8) 6-4.

Canada and Russia are tied 1-1 after the first day of the Fed Cup in Perth -Australia.

In the first match, Stéphanie Dubois simply overshadowed a passive Nadia Petrova , although the score seems to be close 67 64 60 . Dubois clearly showed up in splendid form . The first half of the match, though, was dominated by Petrova, only because Dubois had just landed in Australia after a plane strike. Jetlagged Dubois was making errors, but when she fixed her game, she totally outpowered the Russian , winning the last 9 games of the match to give Canada the lead 1/0.

In the second match, Canadian number 1 Sonya Jeyaseelan surrendered to Rodionova, failing to her mission of team leader. Jeyaseelan started in an apathic way, Rodionova breaking her twice to win the first set 63. Jeyaseelan was on the merge of defeat (63 52) when Dubois came out of the lockerrom to support her compatriot. Boosting Jeyaseelan who was almost crying on court, Dubois barely yelled so much supporting someone.Jeyaseelan managed to level the match , taking the second set tie-breaker, but , exhausted, she totally lost control of the match again, and Rodionova easily won the last set in 15 minutes , levelling the tie to 1-1 after a 63 67 61 win over world n°10.

When asked about her role as captain, Silvia replied 'It was a great honour to be asked by Flavia and Fran and I hope they have been happy with what I have done. It was always going to be tough to play Belgium as they have Kim Clijsters but we have bonded well and are confident of victory'

Russia 2 leads Canada 2/1 after the team of Kirilenko/Safina defeated singles top 10 Sonya Jeyaseelan and doubles SEC champion Stephanie Dubois, who were the favorites to win this rubber, in straight sets of 63 64 , playing excellent tennis .

Jeyaseelan : "Their games matched perfectly, they showed up with a very good tactics. Steph and I get along well, but we are not used to play together , and I still have a lot of difficulties in doubles. I'm very disappointed, it's an honour to play for your country, and we were both waiting so much for Fed Cup... I'm not starting the season in a good way. I expected to win one match , at least. Now , no false step is allowed , we have to win the next two rubbers. It will be hard, they are overmotivated, they play good , and we are a bit rusty , well, especially me. The first season was long and tense at the end. I hope I can put Canada on the track again after the 4th rubber . It will be tough, Petrova has big wins under her belt and I'm not at 100%, a bit tired . I 'll have to wake up soon, I don't have loads of points to defend at the beginning of the season, but I don't wanna keep losing matches like that. And Canada is counting on me, I don't want to disappoint my country. I'll be so down if we lose tomorrow."

Dubois already left to the lockerroom when we could interview Canada's captain , Jeyaseelan , an interview with her will be posted later.

Tomorrow, the 4th rubber will be decisive, between Nadejda Petrova and Sonya Jeyaseelan. The fifth rubber will follow, Anastasia Rodionova and Stéphanie Dubois stepping on the court for an eventual decisive match.
