as expected:

Those playing include up-and-coming stars, top American juniors, journeywoman veterans and one former Top 10 player (Brenda Schultz-McCarthy) attempting a comeback. Bothered by knee and ankle injuries, Chanda Rubin, once No. 6 in the world, had entered but decided over the weekend not to make this event her first tournament of the year.

May 9th, 2006, 11:42 AM
Not really - her opponent was right up there with Mauresmo & Lucic as one of the best juniors of her time before calling it quits. Not sure if this is her on the comeback trail or not.

I don't recall her actually being even that big of a junior tennis star either though. Her results were mediocre at best but I don't really know her story.

She played for Broward College in 2002, which is more of a community college-type school, so she was playing some sort of tennis.

But I guess her last competitive professional matches were back in 2000.

If Brenda can't beat Tweedie-Yates, she needs to take her wildcard into Wimbledon qualies and then call it a day with the singles. That's a gimme first round that I hope she takes advantage of.

That being said, I wouldn't be shocked if Brenda and Angela won the doubs. Brenda is still very much a top 100 doubles player IMO, even on clay where her serve power is muted.

</td></tr> </tbody> </table> <!-- ARTICLE BODY TEXT --> <!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT--> INDIAN HARBOUR BEACH - One can see the promise in her deft touch near the net and her thunderous serves.

One can also see the rust and, yes, the age. There were botched overheads and a rash of double-faults in Brenda Schultz-McCarthy's game late Tuesday afternoon at the $50,000 MIMA Foundation/USTA Pro Classic women's tennis tournament at Kiwi Tennis Club.

Still, Schultz-McCarthy, at 35 playing her first tournament doubles match since 1999, advanced with 21-year-old partner Angela Haynes. They defeated Mami Inoue from the United States and Chile's Liset Brito-Herrara 6-2, 7-6 (8) in their first-round doubles match.

"My first doubles match in seven years," Schultz-McCarthy said minutes after leaving court. "It's a totally different feel."

The first day of the inaugural event's main draw was delayed about three hours for the Har-Tru surfaces to dry adequately after morning rain.

Other than marking the first competition after seven years of doubles idleness, Schultz-McCarthy earned another $50 -- the difference between a half-share of first-round loser doubles money and first-round winner -- in a career in which the former Top 10 player has earned more than $2.5 million.

A native of The Netherlands now living near West Palm Beach, the 6-foot-2 Schultz-McCarthy is not toiling because she needs the money.

"I want to play two more years," she said. "Finish on my terms. I hope to get through this year first."

Now ranked because of inactivity at No. 790 in the world, Schultz-McCarthy reached her career-high ranking of No. 9 in 1996. That was a year after she reached the quarterfinals of both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

Yet by 1999, she tumbled from any lofty rankings perch. A back problem sent her from the tour and thwarted several attempted comebacks. Her tennis was confined to exhibitions, charity events and a few Federation Cup matches. She also runs a tennis camp each year in Virginia.

Schultz-McCarthy said she sees Martina Navratilova out there playing doubles at 49. Mary Pierce, who reached two Grand Slam finals in 2005, is 31. Lindsay Davenport is still a force, a month away from turning 30.

"I was out there with those girls," Schultz-McCarthy said.

There was also Andre Agassi at 35 reaching last year's U.S. Open final. Then again, Agassi is a freak of conditioning.

Carting a name many still remember, Schultz-McCarthy is receiving wild-card entries into either the qualifying or main draws of tour events. She has played in tournaments at Miami, Indian Wells and Memphis this season. Her plans are also to play in some second-level pro events, such as the MIMA, to regain competitive nerves and instincts.

"I'm doing this because I had my highest ranking when I got hurt," she said. "I never thought I was a coach yet. I thought I was a player."

In a spare moment, Schultz-McCarthy received a call from her husband, Sean. She laughed about a relatively simple shot that fell for a winner between herself and Haynes.

Schultz-McCarthy said the couple eventually wants children.

Her experience will give her an edge against some players, as will that massive serve.

"It's now or never," she said of competing. "With my serve, I can get away with murder a bit. I really want to play Wimbledon one more time as well."

Schultz-McCarthy plays her opening singles match this afternoon against an American, Story Tweedie-Yates, ranked No. 356 in the world.

"Brenda is a top dog," Haynes said. "Her serve hit me. I think she could get to about 50 (ranking). The serve-and-volley will help her. Girls don't like that much."

Ranked No. 190, Haynes pulled the tournament's first significant upset. She defeated No. 2 seed Olga Poutchkova 7-6 (0), 6-2 to move into the second round.

A California native, Haynes, 21, had a few days of greatness in 2004 when she reached the third round of the U.S. Open. She has struggled since. Haynes plans to play in a $25,000 event next week at Palm Beach Gardens.

"I think at that point, I got a little cocky," Haynes said of that U.S. Open, "By the end of this year, I hope to be in the top 100. I hope to have a lot more matches under my belt."

The tournament continues today beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is free each day until Friday's quarterfinals. The tournament's singles and doubles finals are Sunday afternoon.
