Crunch Time
Schnyder Needs Matcheshttp://www.patty-schnyder.com/zurich0229.jpg
She's beaten Lindsay before, can she do it again?

Antwerp, Belgium - Patty Schnyder will need to be in top form this week, as she is desperately looking for a spot in the Year Ending Championships, which only takes the top 16 players. Patty sits at number 17.

Having reached a career high of number 11, Patty feels she deserves the spot.

"When you've been ranked number 11 in the world, you should make the YEC. I've already secured my spot in doubles, now I'm just looking for that final singles spot." Schnyder said in her press conference.

Patty's opener here in Antwerp is against slumping American 5th Seed, Lindsay Davenport. Davenport has lost her last two matches, and looks to be falling apart. But Patty isn't much better.

"It wil be an ugly match. Both of us suck right now, but she's already in the YEC, I'm not. That's the difference. I think it will come down to who sucks less to tell you the truth." said a hopeful Schnyder.

Clijsters ready to win the Diamond Raquet!!

http://cache.wtnphotos.com/3103/212316102004clijsters.jpg

ANTWERP, Belgium -- Second-ranked Kim Clijsters returns to her home-country of Belgium, eager to face Alexandra Stevenson in the First Round at the Diamond Classic.

Clijsters, 22, of Belgium, will play before supportive fans in Antwerp when she faces No. 28 .Stevenson of America on Tuesday night.

"It's very exciting to be playing in my home tournament. I have been waiting a long time for this, hopefully I can play good tennis and win my second title." she said Tuesday.

Clijsters is aiming for only her second career Singles title, since winning the French Open, Clijsters has struggled to find that winning form, only reaching the Wimbledon finals. Although she also has won Wimbledon Mixed and 4 Doubles titles, including the U.S OPEN with Angela Haynes. Clijsters is still searching for bigger singles success.

"I am feeling great this week, refreshed and happy to be back home. I have been training since last Saturday after I arrived in Antwerp on Friday, im feeling very comfortable ahead of my match."

In two weeks will be held the Year-End Championships , and only 16 players will take part in it. Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan is one of the players who are looking for one of the last spots in the greatest event of the season. Currently tied at rank 17, Jeyaseelan knows the road is long and no bad step is allowed if she wants to be in the prestigious draw. She is this week in Antwerp, a Tier II event that will be deciding about the last spots. Her goal is to reach the top 16 so that she can play in Los Angeles along with Slam Champions . When asked about her chances , Jeyaseelan cleverly answers:
"Well, I have to focus on my game. I need to keep winning matches to reach the top 16. I'm a very regular player, but I always lack to reach the latter stages of the tournaments, that is why my ranking don't stop climbing up and down between rank 17 and 20. I know it will be very difficult to be there, but I still have faith. I didn't expect much , cause I don't want to be disappointed if I end the season ranked 17 and miss by one spot the YEC.It's obviously my goal to be there , but I'm not expecting too much. We'll see.I have to deserve it" And Jeyaseelan deserved her 1st round win over Serbian Jelena Jankovic, winner last week in Zurich, and included in the fight for one of the last spots too. She beat the Serbian in straight sets, playing great tennis , to win 76(5) 64. " I was scary when I saw the draw , because Jelena played incredible all week long in Zurich. But all the pressure was on her shoulders as she has to keep her ranking to be in the YEC. I played a very solid match and I took every opportunity I had . My next match will be as importnt as this one cause Justine Henin Hardenne is also in the fight for the YEC, so I 'm not allowed to lose against players i am in direct competition with.I'll try to keep focused and not to be too nervous but it will be a tough match.I never played her. I know she's quick and strong. The winner will reach quarter finals , and I hope I will be the winner , I hope I won't go down as I already did in a few close matches.I have faith in my tennis, I 've had good results lately, I'm playing the best I ever did, but it's still not sufficient, the road is long , and I need to play even better if I want to deserve to be one of the 16 lucky players in LA. "

Henin-Hardenne Upsets Hingis In Round of 32
~Confidence Soars With Huge Win~

http://www.abendzeitung.de/dpa-bildout/jpeg-1x1m2729-20060109-img_10645866_onlineBild.jpg

ANTWERP, Belgium--- Justine Henin-Hardenne books her own spot in the Round Of 16 today as she upsets the #4 seed, Martina Hingis. J.Henin-Hardenne (BEL) def. (4)M.Hingis (SUI) 7-6(6) 6-4. It was a two set thriller and Justine was able to finally pull out the big win which has plagued her in the past. Justine has been looking for some big wins and trying to fulfill a chance to get into the Top 16; which will attend the Year Ending Championships. But first, Justine will have to win some more matches here in Antwerp.

"Yeah, I feel like it was an awesome match. Martina and I have similar games but I feel like I have more power than her. It went to my advantage today, and yes, it is nice to finally get a great win over a top 4 player. Martina played so well, but I was just one step ahead of her which is hard to do. My next opponent will be tough, but I am ready."

Justine will next face Canadian, who is ranked 17, Sonya Jeyaseelan. She is also involved in the big race for a spot in the final 16. This will be a huge matchup for both players, as the winner will inch closer to that 16th spot. Both players are coming off similar straight set wins in match score, but Justine's opponent was tougher. This could be a good sign or a bad sign. Good luck Justine Henin-Hardenne.

(2)K.Clijsters (BEL) def. K.Palkina (KGZ) 7-6(1) 4-6 6-4

Antwerp, Belgium - Kim Clijsters beat Ksenia Palkina 7-6(1), 4-6 6-4 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Diamond Classic.

World number two Clijsters struggled in the first set, which she took 7-1 in a tiebreak, before having to battle against the young teenager, to win the match in 3 sets after 2 hours 7 minutes.

"It is not easy to play against Ksenia," Clijsters said. "She is only 15-16, and already a great little player, very talented."

"She really put me under pressure in the first set and in the second she played a really high level, not making many errors, it was quite difficult at times."

"In the third, I had better focus and I really think the crowd support really helped me pull through."

Clijsters will next play Tatiana Golovin, who beat Marta Domachowska of Poland 6-4, 6-3.

"Tatiana and I played in the French Open Finals, it was a tough match, she is a great competitor, its going to be tough."

Althea Gibson has been defeated by seed A.Kournikova 4-6 7-5 4-6 and feels like she isn't fresh enough.
"It's all about the way you enter, wave, smile, put the hand in your hair.
You know that lil move, left hand near the right ear, you take a tuft of hair, and put it on the other side. Then you realize you got hair in your eyes, and you smile."

Playing Kournikova was special for Althea as she played her first LTT match against her and won.
"Yeah, wonderful day, it was. But she played well there, and played well today, things happen."

Althea Gibson wants to feel the freedom of being blonde.
"Yeah, the blonde team, they are always smiling, always running, shakin boobs between points to check if the bra's still holding. I want to show my boobs too. No more denture and old Althea, i need to be sexy Athyty.
Athyty Gibson. The Fresh."

When asked what this new hair color could bring, Althea Gibson stood & screamed.
"Freedom!!!"

'Running down a Pierce drop shot'

World number 9 Silvia Farina Elia has won two matches in a row for the first time in months after victories over Mary Pierce and Jelena Dokic to step up a clash with Amelie Mauresmo who today took out US open champion and world number 1 Russian Anastasia Myskina. Farina Elia has been dogged by bad form for no particular reason but is returning to form at a perfect time with the YEC starting next week. In doubles, the Wimbledon doubles champion is playing with Myskina this week as Dubois is playing in Poland.

'Hitting a backhand to Dokic'

Farina Elia said 'It has been sooo long since I won two matches in a row! Both Mary and Jelena are good player, but I will really have to step it up against Amelie tomorrow. She defeated me the last time we played so I want revange and revange for Nastya aswell. I need to be in good form if I am to do well next week in the year ending championships.'

When asked about playing doubles with world number 1 Anastasia Myskina, Silvia replied 'Both of our partners are in Poland, so we decided we would link up for this tournament. It's a great honour to play with her and we had a pretty good win in the opening round and I think we have a really shot at this title. I would love to play with her again sometime'

Jeyaseelan glances at Mauresmo before serving for match point in their doubles success over Henin and Williams.

Sonya Jeyaseelan was a winner in both singles and doubles today as she defeated in straigth sets Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne 76 64 and her and partner Amélie Mauresmo of France beat the very Henin and partner Venus Williams in three sets of 26 62 63.
"No comment , the singles match was awful. Lots of mistakes from both sides. Fortunately she played even worse than me.I'm glad I am in quarters but it will be a quick loss if I play like that against Kournikova.I have to show up well prepared to avoid what happened in Wimbledon, she beat me 3 and 3 there in the 3rd round. I don't know what happened today, I played great against Jankovic, and poorly today.Good I still was able to win but it's not the way I like to win matches.Ayway, a win is a win I guess"
In the doubles tournament, Jeyaseelan and Mauresmo teamed up for the very first time in Antwerp and they had a stunning 1st round upset over the third-seeded team."We're good friends , so it helped a lot today.I started playing shit like in singles, but Amélie really motivated me to pick up my game and then it was quite easy.Henin played a lot better in the doubles too, they're a good team you know.Hopefully we can go on winning matches, Amélie is still there in singles too so it's pretty exciting." When asked about Henin being upset to lose twice to the same opponent and not having very good words to her, Jeyaseelan answered: "I don't want to enter any kind of discussion about that.Anybody can have a bad day and I really don't care about off-court comments.I have to practice if I want to play a good match tomorrow so if you don't mind , I don't want to lose time reacting about that."

Clijsters rallies to win back home

http://espn-i.starwave.com/media/apphoto/YL11102182100.jpg

Second seed Kim Clijsters scraped into the semi-finals of the Diamond Classic for the first time on Thursday, battling back to edge out french teenager Tatiana Golovin 4-6 7-5 7-5.

Clijsters appeared to be on her way out when she lost the first set and was trailing 4-1 in the second, but the fiesty Begian stormed back to seal victory in just under two hours to set up a clash with fifth seeded American Lindsay Davenport.

Golovin, the 6th seed, was in total command as she won the first set and led 4-1 in the second, only to lose her way when her opponent won six of the next seven games to level the match at one set a piece.

In the third set, Golovin's flat groundstrokes seemed to once again trouble Clijsters, keeping her off balance. The former Number 1 was forced into attempting winners from all areas of the court, making an error afters errors to give the frenchwoman the lead and break of serve to serve for the match.

After saving two match points at 5-4, Clijsters served for the match at 6-5 and booked her place in the last four when Golovin netted a forehand.

"I took a little time for me to adjust out there, she seems to enjoy playing on this fast surface, so I am thrilled to have won such a tight tough match, it gives me alot of confidence again, especially after beating a great player like Tatiana..." said Clijsters

MODERATOR: Questions for miss Jeyaseelan please

Q: Why congrats Sonya, you advanced in both singles and doubles today , you must feel good .
A: Thank you. Obviously, I feel elated, I picked up my game to reach both semi-finals, it's a great feeling.

Q: Anna Kournikova is an old acquaintance isn't she ?

A: Haha, yes she is. I've been knowing her before I was on the tour. She beat me in Wimbledon, because I was very nervous that day, it was my 1st time in the 3rd round of a Slam. Today I felt much better because I'm more used to play bigger matches.

Q: It was a very close match, what made the difference on court today?
A: Indeed it was a very tough match, I love them you know, lots of drama today. She is a very good all court player. Very complete. A bit like me, she has no really big weapon, but all her shots are clear and she's efficient, she has a lovely game , but I reckon she lacked a little bit of aggressivity on the big points.Maybe she felt a bit too much confident, cause she was supposed to win this. I had no pressure, I just try to play the best I can, every win is an extra . The end of the season is usually tough for to pplayers cause they have many matches and tournaments under theirbelt.Maybe I was also a little bit more fresh , physically.

Q: What a difference between today's match and yesterday...
A: Indeed. I already picked up my game during the doubles match yesterday, and I practiced a lot before the match. I was ready for a big fight.I'm glad I could focus on my game and the work payed off.Obviously , I still need to improve my serve in this tournament, because there were a lot of breaks in this match.

Q: You and partner Amélie Mauresmo seem to make a very good team. Tell us about her, because , you know, she will be your opponent in semi-finals.

A: Well, I know that , yeah. Well you know, it's good to see one of us will be in the final. She had a little down thos past weeks, but this week she plays as well as during the summer hardcourts season , and I think she has a big shot at this tournament. I hope one of us will take the title. She is a great friend, we often share a good table in the restaurant, and goo dlaughs during our off times, along with Maggie, Althea I'm glad I could avenge Althea by the way , cause she lost to Anna yesterday) an drecently, Asagoe and Flipkens also tried to incorporate our little group, they're nice players too. It's good to have friends on the tour, but obviously on court it's not the same story and tomorrow i'll try to avenge myself because Amélie won our last meeting.

Q: Tell me about your doubles match now. Similar to yesterday it seems...

A: Humm, yes. You know, after the singles I felt a little tired , and Amélie too. And our opponents started very well, attacking every point. They had nothing to loose.Henin and Williams were better opponents , butwe had to prove our win yesterday was not random. We had to find our rhythm today, and after the first set , we worked harder on our serve games and they did not break us once from the midle of the match. Amélie made a very good job, I'm glad to team up with her .

Q: What are your pronostics for this tournament?

A: I'd like to win it , I can't say more.*laughs* Everyone can beat everyone on a good day. I just hope if I win I'll meet Kim because I never won agaisnt Lindsay *smiles* Anyway, I wish good luck to all my fellow semifinalists cause it was a tough tournament and we have a lot of credit to be in the last 4. Lindsay had a hard time recently , with lots of early losses.Kim deserves it because she's just the best player of our 4, and Amélie is a very solid player. Anyone can win. I'm the underdog but careful i can bite . *winks*

Q: haha, why thank you very much Sonya , and good luck in your semi-finals.Oh, maybe a last word about the YEC ?.

A: Thank you. Well, I don't put too much pressure about that.It would be great to play there, but I focus on my game, and take every match one after one, we'll see what happens. If I can't qualify, iwon't be too disappointed cause I would have great remembrances of this first season and I would prepare the next one so that i can try and get a best ranking. *smiles*

*winks*

:awww:

win or lose, since one of us will be in the finals, we will be enjoying some wine from the wine cellar soon ;):hug:

Fighting Canadian Jeyaseelan stunned everyone reaching her first singles final

Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan produced her best tennis ever this week , and the hard work payed off, since the 17th ranked Ceylan-born reached both singles and doubles finals (partnering Frenchwoman Amélie Mauresmo ).
Jeyaseelan won a thrilling three-setter against first time doubles partner Amélie Mauresmo to reach her first ever final. The score was 46 76(3) 76(8) and Jeyaseelan even had to save a couple of match points inboth 2nd and 3rd set.

"I don't know what to say. I don't know how I can possibly still be here ... I was so close to lose today, I saved 2 match points in the second set, while trailing 6/5 40/15 on her serve . I just wanted to play a third set. But she played incredible tennis. She is really on . And it almost cost me my dream to reach the final. " Jeyaseelan saved those match points with an aggressive unreachable return on forehand, and a double fault . Th ethird set was of great intensity as none of the players wanted to let the other run ahead. Each time one of them took the lead, she lost it. Extraordinary play in both sides. Then came this stifling tie-breaker.

"We were already playing for more than two hours. It was unbreathable. I was totally motivated, but also very nervous because it was only my second semi-final on tour. She won the first couple of points , and kept her lead so that she had a 3rd match point at 6/5. I thought it was over. But the point we played was incredible. A long rally , and finally she missed her volley . 6/6 then 7/6 , fourth match point. I served a good serve and I smacked a volley from the middle court.I took a lot of risks in this one shot. But it was on, so I knew I really had to win this match. Unfortunately, she served an ace on my first match point , but missed a shot to offer me my second match point. There it ended in a tragic way, cause one of her shots hit the net and the ball fell just near the net , I reached it , but my ball hit the net again and fell on her side , she reached it but , luck was not hers, as the ball hit the net a third time in a row to finally fall out of the court limits . It was over.I could not believe it. Such an epic point to finish the match. It was like a coin toss you know. *giggles* And then we went on to win our doubles semi-finals , which showed our friendship is really important because we managed n, after this awesome , terible battle, to gather our strength to defeat our opponents Groenefeld and Jankovic in another three-setter.Intense day, and I'm elated about it. I hope I 'll keep playing my best tennsi against Kim tomorrow. It will be tough, she has experience, she has the audience, shehas everything. But I have nothing to lose and I'll be there , hungry, to try and win this long-awaited title that would really help me reach the YEC."

ANTWERP, Belgium - The seeded combination of Italian Silvia Farina-Elia and Russian Anastasia Myskina impresses on debut, as the fourth seeds advanced to the final with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Tatiana Golovin and Althea Gibson.

"We are both feeling very confident," said Myskina. "It's great to be in a final once more, especially with Silvia. I think our games are quite different, which is good for doubles, I think. I am enjoying myself a lot this week, and I am hoping we can partner again sometime next year, if not for a full season."

Myskina & Farina Elia Champions!

http://www.tennisrulz.com/players/myskina/gallery05/443.jpg

4th seeds Anastasia Myskina and Silvia Farina Elia took the doubles title here in Antwerp in convincing fashion by defeating singles champion Sonya Jeyaseelan and Amelie Mauresmo 6-3 6-2 in their first competition together. This was revange for both Myskina and Farina Elia as Mauresmo took them both out of the singles. The champions hadnt dropped a set all week and looked like a match made in heaven with Myskina on the backhand side with Farina Elia on the forehand side and this was a winning formula.

Farina Elia said 'I am a little shocked we won since its our 1st time together but we are both amazing doubles players and have won slams this season and when we were both without a partner we decided to give it a go. We didnt talk about how we would play - just try to have fun but we gelled together great and won the title. This gives me hope for next week in Moscow and of course YEC'

Myskina added 'We both have enjoyed playing together. I think we have shown that we are both great all-round players who can adapt to anything and that is what a champion is'

After match point , Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan turns to her coach and friends , radiant .

Sonya Jeyaseelan (unseeded and ranked 17) won her first ever title on the LTT Tour , defeating for 2nd time in 2006 world n°2 Kim Clijsters in a thrilling final which score was 76(7/5) 57 64 after 2 hours and 9 minutes.

Here's Jeyaseelan's tough path to the victory:

1R + J.Jankovic 76(5) 64
2R + J.Henin-Hardenne 76(4) 64
QF + A.Kournikova(8) 76(2) 57 64
SF + A.Mauresmo 46 76(3) 76(8)
F + K.Clijsters(2) 76(5) 57 64

Jeyaseelan was also a finalist in doubles along with Frenchwoman Amélie Mauresmo :

1R + Henin/V.Williams(3) 26 62 63
2R + Domachowska/Kirilenko 36 63 63
SF + Groenefeld/Jankovic 26 64 63
F - Myskina/Farina Elia 36 26

Here's Jeyaseelan's speech in the winner ceremony at the end of the doubles final:

"Well, I don't really know how to begin. Ok, first I want to congratulate Kim for a great week , and apologize to her for beating her in front of her crowd.I know how it feels to lose on home soil but I'm sure she's glad for reaching the final and she'sa friend, so she'll be happy for me ;) . Well I hope . *laughs* Then , I want to say thank you to Amélie for teaming up with me.It was a great week, my first doubles final too, so thank you and congrats Amélie, you played great in both singles and doubles. :yeah: And congrats to Nastya and Silvia, great result , girls, without losing a set, impressive  Wow! Now, I'm glad I finally managed to control my nerves to win close matches , and i'd like to thank my coach Jool, we made hard work and it's paying off. I dedicate this title to him. And I also want to thank all the support I received all week long. The girls have been great. It's tough because it's the end of the season, it's tense, we all want to reach YEC and to play our best, so a lot a pressure. Thank you everyone, the crowd, my fellow players, and also my fanclub, very effective one I have to say :hehehe: . Finally, I want to say a big congrats to Maggie Maleeva, my doubles partner. Oh I know she's not here, but as you probably know she won her second title in Warsaw, and we were supporting each other in the web all week long.Hopefully we can have a similar week in Moscow :yeah: . Thanks everyone and once again, I feel very thrilled and proud to lift my first trophy. Thanks to the tournament directors, to end, it was awesome job once again :worship: .Hopefully I come back next season to defend my title.Bye everybody :wavey: "

With this win, Jeyaseelan climbs the rankings from 17 to 11 and almost secures a spot in the Year-End Championship. She'll have to win a couple of matches in Moscow to qualify, depending on her rivals' results.
