new-york Jan 28th, 2006, 03:03 PM Althea Gibson wants an american to win.
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8509/altheawhite6fz.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
As she said in the previous LTT American tournament, playing at home feels not the same.
"It's special, you're at home, it kinda put some more pressure on court cause people look at you more, but it also helps, gives energy."
Disappointed by her recent results, she won't give up.
"Of course, i'm angry at myself, you begin in a great way, and fall to follow that good result. But i still have the faith, i still know my potential."
Althea could meet third seed in second round of singles, doubles, and mixed.
"Yeah, that's funny, but we don't know what can happen, let me get my first win, then i'll be able to look for the second. Everybody is dangerous on a given day."
UDACHi Jan 28th, 2006, 04:27 PM I feel like I'm running out of ideas for points.

TF Chipmunk Jan 29th, 2006, 04:46 AM Anna-Lena Groenefeld Eager to Make Waves
http://www.tennismagazin.de/tennis/images/interviews/groenefeld.gif
Anna-Lena Groenefeld has failed to make it out of the second round in her last few tournaments.
Flushing Meadows, NY - Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany knows what hard work means. For some, it translates to success, but for the young German, it has meant trials and tribulations that have seen her steady rise up the rankings seem like pulling teeth.
Losing to seeded players time and time again, Anna-Lena Groenefeld has yet to prove to the world that she has what it takes to make it big. Though she is closing in on the top 20, she has yet to defeat a high-profile top-ranked player.
"I don't really feel like that is a necessary requirement because a win is a win," she said. "But if it means I get through to the next round, then of course I want to beat whoever it is I'm playing."
As Anna-Lena approaches this US Open event, she must face yet another 7th seed, should she get through her first round opponent. This will be a telling match, for this is on a grand slam stage. The pressure will be on her to finally make a statement. However, she must first grasp the situation at hand in her mind mentally, for her game is certainly there.
"I'm just going to give it my all," she said. "I'm not giving up."
LTT Jan 29th, 2006, 09:55 AM I just realised  After we made the draws last night - TAMIRA PASZEK (AUT) joined LTT. They have already sent in points.

iPatty. Jan 29th, 2006, 07:11 PM Schnyder Prepares for the U.S. Open
Patty Ready To Rumble
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/usopen031.jpg
New York, NY - After arriving in New York early, a result of an early loss in California to Sonya Jeysaleen, Patty Schnyder went straight to work, preparing for the U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam of the season.
Schnyder has had an average hardcourt season, making the quarterfinals in one of her events. Her ranking has recently dropped to number sixteen in the world. Her chances of making the Year-Ending Championships are getting slimmer by the day.
"I can't wait for this to start. It is probably going to be the toughest tournament among the top players, because we all know that this is a chance to earn a lot of points towards the Year-Ending Championships." Schnyder said in a courtside interview.
Patty's singles tournament will kick off against Svetlana Kuznetsova, whose only quarterfinal appearnace came in Beijing at the first tournament of the year.
"For sure I'm excited to play her. It will be a tough fight, but she's not one of the really 'dangerous' unseeded players here. You've got Maggie, Sonya, Althea, Amelie, all of these players are likely to do damage here." said Schnyder.
In women's doubles, Schnyder and Palkina have drawn newcomers Dulko and Gubasci. If they win, then they have a chance to face the team that beat them last week, Domachowska and Grzybowska.
In mixed doubles, Patty will begin her partnership with Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, after Schnyder dropped former partner Stanislas Wawrinka. Schnyder and Baghdatis will open against the Chinese/Czech combination of Ting Li and Jiri Novak.

Munchen Jan 30th, 2006, 07:00 AM Clijsters flies out to Flushing Meadows
http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/ap/20060126/capt.mel19601260900.australian_open_tennis_mel196. jpg
The women's world tennis number one Kim Clijsters was among the first of 2 Belgium U.S OPEN contenders to fly out to New York, it was reported on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, journalists gathered at the LAX airport to watch French Open Champion; Clijsters board her flight to New York. Her decision to compete in the U.S Open pleased fans who had feared she might fly back home. As she has been recovering from an injured hip, which occured last week in the Semi Finals of the Doubles in California.
Seeded Number 1, Clijsters received tests and the ultrasound made clear that she has an inflammation in her hip. There is no sign of a torn muscle.
In the next couple of days, Kim Clijsters will be following a special treatment and specific exercises.
"It's not 100 percent. I sometimes have alot of pain, but now I have just started taking some medication." Clijsters said Monday. "The good thing is, I now have medication and I am having plenty of treatment since my arrival in New York."
Clijsters has had an exceptional Hard Court Season, especially in Doubles where Angela Haynes and her are undefeated, winning their three last tournaments.
However in Singles Clijsters has managed to reach the RND 16 and 2 Q/F's in her last 3 Hard Court events and is among one of the firm favourite to win yet another Grand Slam title here in New York despite of her injury.
"Its unbelievable, I mean everything is amazing." said Clijsters "I have accomplished alot since turning professional and the last 2-3 months on tour have been very exciting for myself. Becoming #1 and Winning French Open Singles, Wimbledon Mixed with Carlos and now 14 straight matches and 3 tournaments winning with Angela is just a dream for myself."
Clijsters has a great record in GS events since joining the LTT, she has made AO Semifinals, FO Champion nd Wimbledon Finalist. In the First Round Clijsters has a BYE.

Venusismyhero Jan 30th, 2006, 09:57 PM Jennifer Capriati set to retire
American retiring after US Open
http://www.jennifercapriatitennis.com/Jennifer%20Capriati1a/images/capriati_2003us66.JPG
Jennifer Capriati said that the US Open will be her last tennis tournament for awhile. She said she would possibly opt to return in the future, but she would love to persue the drug-dealing business.
Jennifer Capriati never truely made a splash on the LTT tour, and rarely trained. Jennifer was more known for being a wonderful doubles team with Maria Vento-Kabchi, who retired. Jennifer said she loves this game, but she'd love to settle down and have a few kids with Matthew Perry.
"I never really did get into this tour as well as I should of. I totally respect the directors and will forever appreciate their hard work and dedication to this tour. I also would like to say that it's been a pleasure playing with a large field of woman who are so respectful and nice. I want to end in the biggest event of the year, and I am looking forward to ending my tennis here, in New York." said Jennifer, with tears in her eyes.
Capriati faces Polish legend Marta Domowschka and the next round the winner would face second seeded Anastasia Myskina. Jennifer has really had a great time, but she can't keep track of her coach because he is so busy. It's been fun. I want to win this event!

Ferosh Feb 1st, 2006, 06:17 PM Nadia Petrova Through to the Round of 32
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b321/qax21/8540383petrova.jpg
AP
Flushing Meadows, NY- Nadia Petrova of Russia defeated compatriot Anastassia Rodionova 6-3 3-6 6-4. The victory was sweet for Petrova who had previously lost to Rodionova in the first round of the Iceland Challenge earlier this month.
"I was very happy with my win today," said Petrova. "Rodionova is a tough player and she was playing very well today. I wish her luck in her next tournament."
This is Petrova's second grand slam appearance in her career. Nadia broke into the scene last month at Wimbledon where she defeated the then world's number one Martina Hingis in the first round.
"Hopefully I can cause another upset at a grand slam," states Petrova. "I definately want to do better than my last grand slam appearance."
Petrova had come into Flushing Meadows with commitments in doubles and mixed doubles. She is now scrambling to find a new doubles parter after her parter Karolina Sprem, unexpectedly retired from the tour earlier today.
Next up for Petrova is American Jill Craybas who will have the home advantage.
"I like when the crowd is against me, it just gives me more power to prove myself as a good player. I'll definately be looking forward to that match.
Ferosh Feb 1st, 2006, 06:18 PM Congratulations & good luck to all the winners! To everyone else, good luck on your next tournament.
-sugi- Feb 1st, 2006, 06:26 PM Craybas Stuns All
http://img494.imageshack.us/img494/3339/jill1ky.jpg
Jill Craybas of USA Stunned all today by making her LTT Tour Debut against 5th seed and world number 5, Lindsay Davenport. Jill who is ranked 63 in the world was expected to be overwhelm of nerves about her match on The Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest stadium she has ever played on and a night match, where all the best players normally have a match and matches which are expected to be good matches are. A good match this was. Jill was broken early on looking nervous and lost the first set but from then on, Craybas never looked back making a 4/6 6/3 6/3 win. Mary Carillo spoke to Jill about her match.
What a great match Jill
Yeah, I was kind of nervous to begin with. I served two consecutive double faults and was broken so was really nervous. The crowd got behind me and helped though which was really nice.
Were you nervous at all?
At the first set, for sure I was really nervous almost scared. But after I got broken I told myself I have nothing to lose so just played my own game.
Next you face Nadia Petrova, what are your thoughts on her game?
She has a good serve and I think she will be tough to beat, obviously. But I will just play my game and not let anything stop me.
Do you think you can beat Nadia
Not really but I suprised the world by beating Lindsay so hey, why not suprise everyone by beating Nadia!
Thankyou for the interview Jill

During the warm-up against Sugiyama
Not really a surprise, Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada won her 1st round match at the LTT US Open on Wednesday , defeating Japanese Ai Sugiyama in straight sets of 64 63.She now has to face in-form and crowd favorite Monica Seles to try to reach the 3rd round, her best result in a Slam (it was in Wimbledon) and confirm her dangerous underdog status for seeds.
"I'm kinda relieved cause I changed strategy during this match.I tried to be more aggressive- not to let my nerves dominate me at the end of the sets, and it worked well today.I hope it goes on next round against Seles. Monica was the 1st top player I ever beat, and thanks to that win in Birmingham , I 've gained a lot of confidence. But I still need to reach the next step, to leave the average players group. I don't consider myself average actually, but my results suffer from a lack of aggressivity during the important , long sets or points. Ai and I have a similar game, with a lot of endurance and no real big weapon, and today I prevailed , but Seles will give me more trouble , I'll have to serve better to have a chance against her cause she attacks the ball so early. On hardcourts , she's phenomenal, today she dispatched Molik fair and square, so I expect a very tough match, but I'd really like to be able to keep my slam progression and go one step further like I did so far , which is now the quarter-finals, I know it's an ambitious goal, but I think I can do it. I really hope so, anyway..."
Jeyaseelan often reaches the 3rd round of tournaments but her nerves always are a problem to reach the latest stages of tournaments. She's known for being able to put up a huge fight out of everybody, but still needs to improve to impose herself as a real force on tour...

FLUSHING MEADOW - As expected the newcomer Shinobu Asagoe couldn't do anything against the number 3 seed Ana Ivanovic, who won 6-2 6-4. But facing a seeded player in a Grand Slam is tough for her very first match. Anyway she didn't mind meeting the press and giving her first impressions.
New York Times - How are you Shinobu after your debuts in a Grand Slam?
Shinobu Asagoe - Well, I feel fine. I cannot be too disappointed because I faced a very good player and did my best. Unfortunately it wasn't enough.
New York Times - Talking about your opponent, what can you tell us about her?
Shinobu Asagoe - Ana is young and talented and, believe me, she will go far in this USO.
New York Times - You played during the night session on the Louis Armstrong Stadium. What did you feel when you entered it?
Shinobu Asagoe - Well you know, it's my very first match, and it was for a Grand Slam Tournament. I was very impressed by the crowd - very fair-play by the way - and a bit nervous as I was playing the number 3 seed and I had to serve first. The first set was tough for me and I played better in the second. This wasn't enough but it will help me for the next Tournaments. Despite the loss it was a great experience to live.
New York Times - Shinobu what's your schedule for the next days?
Shinobu Asagoe - I still have to play the doubles with Kirsten Flipkens and as both of us lost in the Single's First Round we can absolutely focus on our doubles match and give all the best of ourselves.
New York Times - Well Shinobu thank you for this interview and best of luck for your doubles match and the next Tournaments?
Shinobu Asagoe - My pleasure. See you soon!

~Justine Needs Big Jump~
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/graphics/gallery/tennis/usopen05/day2/henin.jpg
NEW YORK, NY--- Justine Henin-Hardenne won her first match at the U.S. Open. J.Henin-Hardenne (BEL) def. V.Zvonereva (RUS) 7-5, 6-3. In a close and nervous first set Justine slipped by. But Justine took control in the second set as she began to mix up her play and really move around the Russian.
"Yeah, it was a good match. I like to have these easy matches at first. Hopefully, you know, I can make a big impact here. My goal for the rest of the season is to break the Top 16, for the YEC. But my main goal is my next round right now."
Justine will next face 15th seed, Elena Dementieva, who is also a Russian. Justine will need to be on her best game to beat Elena. Justine needs to attack the poor serve and try to hold her own on Elena's great baseline shots. Justine and Elena are very close in the rankings and not much seperates them. Good luck Justine Henin-Hardenne.

8th seed Silvia Farina Elia survived a scare from fellow Italian Francesca Schiavone by winning in three sets 6-7(8) 7-5 6-3 to set up a clash with French lady Amelie Mauresmo for a place in the third round.
Farina Elia said 'It is always tough facing a player from the same country as you and this affected me in the first set but then I used my experience to pull me through and hopefully I can actually win two matches in a row!!! Mauresmo is a tough cookie but I hope to progess even further in this great tournament'

new-york Feb 2nd, 2006, 12:35 AM No first round loss for Althea Gibson.
A.Gibson (USA) / D.Hantuchova (SVK) 6-4 6-2
Q- How does it feel to play your first Grand Slam in your country Althea?
A.G- It does feel good, people know me better, they congratulated me a lot, the support is really helping, i'm really excited.
Q- The US OPEN is your fav out of the big four?
A.G- Well, to be honest, no. Wimbledon has a special meaning for me, and i just love to play on grass. So, i was a lilttle disappointed that i didn't begin the tour at time for that one, i just love it. Here is fine too, just a close second. ;)
Q- Very solid match on the Louis Armstrong court today.
A.G- Definitely, i managed to break at time in the first set, and the second, well, i just played well i think, pretty solid match.
Q- Next opponent is not anybody...
A.G- Yeah, i know, Ana will be tough. We got a really really close match in the semis in Iceland. I think that was my biggest and best match of the tour.
And i still lost so, be sure i don't understimate anybody, just, i need to know that i can give her hard time. Hopefully, there will be the mixed doubles, so i will play more and have at least three matches over there.
Q- Mahesh Bhuphati is your part, how did you team up.
A.G- Well, we just met here in Ny, after my early loss in the previous tournament. I trained with the american team and some other players and he came to ask me. I was surprised cause my doubles results are even worse than my singles ones, but we tried, and we have fun, we're happy as a team.
Q- You seem really happy over there.
A.G- Yeah, i love tennis, i love New York, Wimbledon is special cause so prestigious, and the surface, but here is a really really close second. I just feel comfortable. I'm at home.

Viktoria Azarenka hits a forehand during her win over Stephanie Dubois.
FLUSHING MEADOWS, New York -- Belarussian Viktoria Azarenka advanced into the second round of the U.S. Open after defeating Stephanie Dubois 6-3 7-6(3) in the first round.
"I think this was a good match for me you know, to see where my level is," Azarenka said to the media. "I felt like I was in control from the start, even though it got close in the second. I was still the one dictating the points from the baseline and deciding who was going to win the point."
Azarenka still feels she is yet to live up to her real potential on the tour.
"I've played some good tennis here and there, but I'm still waiting for that tournament where I go deep and get some good wins, that raises my confidence, that breakthrough. Hopefully this will be the tournament in which that happens."
The Belarussian next takes on the hard-hitting Sania Mirza of India who upset the No.14 seed, Iveta Benesova.
"Sania will be tough. She has a really big forehand, but she is very inconsistant. If I am able to be the more consistant player and play my game, then I think I can win this match. I guess we will have to wait to see who comes out on top. I hope it will be me," said Azarenka while smiling.
The second round will be played in a couple of days.

Simplicity Feb 2nd, 2006, 01:57 AM Sania Mirza breaks barriers
After rapidly going from anonymity into the hearts of her nation in only 1 month, India's teenage tennis phenomena Sania Mirza was become caught up in a cultural protest for breaking with traditions by being a Muslim athlete.
http://www.girlstalksports.com/images/userimage/saniamirza.jpg
Her rise to fame and popularity has not gone unnoticed by the radical Islamic clerics in the mostly Hindu but officially secular India, home to some 130 million Muslims.
After joining the LTT tour a month ago, Sania Mirza was unable to win a match until the U.S Open. Sania mentioned she had been experiencing times of hardship, and several critiques from here own home country.
Instead of wearing her country's traditional attire, shown below, Sania Mirza has been caught wearing Serena Williams version of the "cat-suit"(far right).
http://www.boingboing.net/images/veil.1841.jpghttp://sportsmed.starwave.com/media/ten/2002/0903/photo/a_serena_i.jpg
After giving Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic a straight set thrashing on Tuesday night, Sania Mirza received a standing ovation from the U.S audeince and fell to tears. After the match she stated "I'm really estatic right now. This is my first win on tour, and I really hope the people of India can accept me for who I am. I'm old enough to know better, but still too young to care."
When told that she would be playing a Junior in the Round of 32, Sania clearly expressed that she couldn't give a rat's ass. "I really don't care who I play next. I am 1-3 on tour, evidently I am the underdog, and I'm gald. These girls might think this win was a fluke, but they'll realize it' not when it's a little too late."

iPatty. Feb 2nd, 2006, 09:59 PM Schnyder Overcomes First Hurdle
Patty Takes Down Svetlana
http://www.patty-schnyder.com/ausopen0530.jpg
New York, NY - Patty Schnyder has completed two matches here at the U.S. Open holding a 1-1 record. Her win came in singles on Wednesday against Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Patty looked as confident as ever during the first set, winning in 6-3. She was yet to make a forehand error and was 2-2 on break point chances.
But her fiesty Russian opponent fought back, leveling the match by taking the second set 6-3, due to some uncharacteristic errors from Schnyder.
"I wasn't feeling very well in the second set. I was starting to get a few cramps in my stomach, but the trainer came out after the second set and helped me. I was fine for the third set." Schnyder said in her press conference.
After the trainer left the court, play resumed and Schnyder was able to overcome not only her opponent, but cramping issues to take the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Patty spoke about her future in this tournament.
"I think I will need to just take it one match at a time. I've never had problems with cramps before so I will need to drink a lot of Powerade and eat more bananas.
I haven't really looked to see who my next opponent is. Whoever it is, I hope that my fitness level will be 100% and I hope that I can come out with a win." said Schnyder.
Patty's next opponent will be American Alexandra Stevenson, who has beaten Patty earlier this year on grass. Alexandra will surely have the crowd's support, but Patty will surely try her best and hope to reach the Third Round.
The loss that we spoke of earlier came in mixed doubles. Patty and Marcos Baghdatis were taken out by the pairing of Ting Li and Jiri Novak. Patty says that they lost because of two reasons.
"I think after we have more practice together, we can play better. He was kind of a last minute thing, after Stanislas got injured in New Haven. But I'm very thankful that Marcos played with me and we will be playing a full schedule next year.
I want to congratulate Ting and Jiri, because they played a great match. Ting is one of my good friends on the tour so I wish her all the best." Schnyder said.
Patty will play only one match on Friday, in doubles with Ksenia Palkina. Her singles match against Stevenson will take place on Saturday.
TomTennis Feb 2nd, 2006, 11:33 PM Davenport Dumped Out in Opener
http://2005.usopen.org/images/pics/large/b_0907_003davenport.jpg
Davenport puts another shot wide to hand the unseeded American from Rhode Island the boost start to her LTT career.
It was a bitter seet moment for Wimbledon Champion Lindsay Davenport, who was beaten in the first round of the US Open last night. Her grand slam performances were all practice in comparison to her home countrys major tennis tournament. Winning Wimbledon propelled her to a very respectible 5th seeded place for the Open, yet somehow nothing worked.
It was on the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the night feature match that Davenport played in front of her compatriots, facing new comer Jill Crabyas. Tearing through the opening set despite not playing the type of tennis that took her to a Grand Slam victory, she closed out the opener with 3 blistering backhand winners. The second and third sets however, went south. Way south, as she watched her usually accurate forehand sail into the crowd, and her domineering serve became a liabilty rather than a weapon. And 1 hour and 38 minutes later, Davenport was sent packing.

Q. at this moment in time how dissapointed are you?
Davenport. Gutted, just obviously absolutely gutted. Im just...you know, erm, yeh, its just.....hard. Its really hard to take.
Q. Who deserved it out there, i mean the drama wa\s high because obvioulsy the tournament was losing one of its favourties to an un-known, but the quality wasnt that high?
Davenport. No second thoughts about it. She totally deserved it. She played her heart out and i hope she has the tournament of her life. I wish that on all the players, i really do. Its just, erm...you know, i wish i had played like Lindsay Davenport, and not someone ranked outside the top 50.
Q. Your still in the doubles though, arent you excited?
Davenport. I guess i should be but im not. I,....just cant speak. Im just speechless. Im just going to try and play better with Martina and James, i dont want to let them down like i let myself down.
Q. Why do you think you didnt play as well as you could have?
Davenport. I just dont know. It was a day when she was doing everything right and i was doing everythin wrong. Its just disheartening to not see your name in the draw anymore, i dont know what i could have done, played better i guess. It just goes to show that you cant make 60 unforeced errors in a match and expect to win, not at this level on this tour, its just too intense.
Q. Lindsay, Not to be offending, but you have only won 2 matches since your famous Wimbledon title, how confidenct are you with your game?
Davenport. Erm, i just dont know. Everything just sort of went down after Wimbledon. I was beaten in Iceland and then things just started crashing around me from there. Although i try not to live and die with each win or loss, its still really upseting. I just have to work on my game and get back to the top.
Q. You said yourself that the tour is tough these days, I mean obviously one of the top seeds was going to fall early.
Davenport. Yeh there was no doubt. I just am upset that it is me. It happens to the best of us. But like many others im going to pick myself up and be ready for the next event, thats the beauty of tennis, and of sport.
Q. With you out, do you expect to win? Crabyas?
Davenport. I hope she goes deep into the tournament, i really do. I just think its mroe plausible that someone like Hingis will win, and i hope she does. She understands what it feels like going through a loss in form, and now she is slowly picking herself back up. I wish all the girls the best of luck in their matches.
Q. Do you still see yourself as a threat for slams now, i mean you have only won 2 matche sin the last 4 weeks?
Davenport. You know, there are always going ot be NaySayers, and i guess you are one of them, but guessw what. I dont care. I have been at the very best and won the biggest tournaments, and i will get back there. Mark my words. Every has their moment in the sun, and unfortuanately it cant always be me. Its just someone elses turn to have that sucess, but it'll be mine again soon enough.

Chevina Feb 3rd, 2006, 07:33 AM Myskina Puts End To Losing Drought.
February 3rd, 2006.
FLUSHING MEADOWS, United States - World No.2 Anastasia Myskina survived a tough first round encounter at the US Open overnight.
Myskina defeated Austrian wildcard Tamira Paszek 75 in the final set, after a slow start saw the Russian drop the opener 61.
"Finally, I am able to win a difficult opener," said Myskina. "I've always said the first round is always the hardest and today was no exception,"
Following defeats at the hands of Ksenia Palkina and Amelie Mauresmo primarily due to an injury, 22-year-old Myskina began her US Open with her first opening win since Vancouver three weeks ago.
"The injury is quite noticably healing," spoke Myskina. "I think playing doubles last week actually helped put some pressure on my ankle,"
Marta Domachowska is the next opponent for fomer world No.1.
"Really, I don't believe I can win this next match," admitted Myskina. "She is in great shape, I am not."

wateva Feb 3rd, 2006, 10:51 AM Ana Ivanovic worried about her form
http://www.ana-ivanovic.net/gallery/albums/AO06/normal_ausopen25.jpg
Ana Ivanovic was a victor in US Open 2 days ago when she beat newcomer, Shinobu Asagoe in straight sets. However, Ana is not feeling any confidence as she will face dangerous tennis legend Althea Gibson in the second round.
"Shinobu is a newcomer and did not have much experience. I was lucky to scrape past her. But I'm not going to get much luck against Althea. She pushed me to the limit a few days ago and I'm guessing she knows my weakness now. I'm not going to lie but I think I'm going to exit early."
Ana spent 3 hours on court practising her groundstrokes but after another errant backhand, she smashed her racket onto the floor and left the courts in a hurry.
"I can't even play well in practice. In a real match where there is so much pressure, I'm sure I'm going to lose in a jiffy."
The top seeds in LTT are being challenged by newcomers with a nothing to lose attitude. Kim Clijsters, Anastasia Myskina, Martina Hingis and Ana herself have lost in early round in the past few weeks.
"This tour has an awesome depth. I'm definitely very threatened by these newcomers. I hope that I would just hang on to my top 8 position and try to qualify for the Year End Championship."

*Jool* Feb 3rd, 2006, 02:48 PM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/Divers/jeyaseelan.jpg
Jeyaseelan upset Seles for the second time in 2006, and reached the 3rd round of the US Open where she will face n°4 seed Martina Hingis
13 was not a lucky number today for crowd favorite Monica Seles as she failed to reach the round of 16 in the US Open, where she was upset by tenacious Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan in straight sets on Grandstand Stadium : 75 76(4).
Jeyaseelan took the lead in the head-to-head between the two players , now having a 2/1 record against Yougoslavian born Seles.
"Well obviously I'm really satisfied with this result. We already had two tough matches, she beat me on clay, I beat her on grass, her worst surface , now on hardcourts , I'm really glad to have prevailed because I know her affection to this surface and this tournament. I played a good match, being aggressive cause I knew she would enter in the match pretty strong as usual. She smacks the ball very hard, and I had to keep focus all the time not to be overwelmed. I was about to lose my serve at 4/4 in the first set, but hopefully saved a few break points and this helped me to settle my position in the match, to stay ahead, which was very important. She served very well , but I took all the opportunities I had today, so I'm really relieved and glad. Hopefully I can finally reach my first Slam QF , but Hingis next will be another tough match." Jeyaseelan also reached the next round in mixed doubles yesterday with Andy Ram, and benefitted today of the withdrawal of Golovin and Rubin to reach 2nd round in doubles. " Well , concerning doubles, I'd like to tell everyone that I had long discussions with my partner Li Na, and that we decided it would be our last tournament together, so hopefully we can win at least a last match together, but our record has been really disappointing , although we get along very well. I noticed that my best friend on tour , Maggie Maleeva was suffering from bad results in doubles too , and lately she split with Likhovtseva , so I asked her whether she would agree to become my new partner , and she said yes. I hope we'll make a good doubles team, you know , I was a witness at her marriage, so I 'm very pleased with this decision and hope we can both improve our respective results. Na was very comprehensive, and I 'd like to tell her again that it won't change anything to our friendship and that I really appreciated to play with her, it's just , you know, that the results weren't as good as we expected at the beginning of the season. A change would do me good I think." Jeyaseelan's next opponent will be 4th seeded Martina Hingis of Switzerland . It will be their first match-up on the tour. "She is a finesse player, definitely not the kind of Monica Seles, so I don't really know how I will deal with that. Maybe she'll be too strong for me, but I always believe in my chances, even though I never went pass the third round of a Slam." Indeed , Jeyaseelan already equalled her best showing at a Slam , she was defeated in straight sets by Kournikova in 3rd round of Wimbledon. "Hopefully this time I can go one step further :) "
