Jeyaseelan with some friend at the player party
Canada's Sonya Jeyaseelan has just arrived in Miami on Saturday for the begining of the very expected American hardcourts season.
At her arrival on Sunday morning after the player party on Saturday night, Jeyaseelan immediately took the path of the practice courts .
"I feel so great here . The sun is shining , it's a cool weather , I mean last week in Iceland was so rude , I mean the landscape is one of the most beautiful I ever was offered to see travelling along the tour, but it was so cold...Now we can practice again under a good sunny weather. It's really agreeable.I feel much better than last week. I fully recovered from illness and am ready to challenge the girls. My draw is not an easy one, definitely , with an eventual clash with Farina in round 2 and Seles in round 3.But I'll take every match one after one, and try to do my best. Also I'd really like to see the match between Althea with whom I got very close last week, and Maggie , one of my best friend on tour.Hopefully the order of play allows me to show up on their court and see this very entertaining match ..."

Jelena Jankovic sat down and discussed her goals and hopes on the LTT for the rest of the season.
THE MODERATOR: Questions for Miss Jankovic, please.
Q: Congratulations on entering the top twenty this week.
JJ: Thank you so much. My personal goal had been to reach the top twenty by the US Open so this is definitely a good surprise.
Q: Do you always set goals for yourself?
JJ: Yes. I always have. My current goal is top reach the year ending champsionships. I had no idea that the sixteen highest ranked players would make it there. I thought it was the top eight so, yeah, when I learned that last week it certainly became my main wish.
Q: You seem to get a lot of your ranking points from wins over the top players, bonus points. Why do you think this is?
JJ: I try to always play my absolute best against the top girls. They know I'm sort of dangerous by now so I don't think they would see me as someone they could just beat easy. I can give anyone trouble when I'm playing well.
Q: How can you explain your miniature slump earlier this season? You were struggling to win matches and now you're playing great.
JJ: Early on in my career, I really was able to play great and get big wins. But then the pressure, I think it got to me. People expected so much from me. Plus I don't exactly love the clay so it was real tough. It took a really painful loss at Roland Garros to Patty [Schnyder] to really get me fully motivated. In that match, I won the first set 6-0 and then totally lost my groove. That was so horrible.
Q: What would you like to accomplish this week in Miami?
JJ: I don't have something specific I'd like to acheive here this week. Just to win. I'd like to make the third round I guess. One thing I'd like to do at any tournament is win three straight matches. I've never done that before.
Q: Thank you, Jelena. Good luck in the tournament.
JJ: Oh, thank you.
Farina Elia Fan Jan 8th, 2006, 11:56 PM Good luck JJ :)
UDACHi Jan 8th, 2006, 11:57 PM Good luck JJ :)

Maggie after a Mexican restaurant in Miami
Miami. Magdalena Maleeva took advantage of her loss in the 1st round of the Central Bank of Iceland Challenge last week in Reykjavik to arrive in Miami quite early in comparison to the other players.
"I needed to change atmosphere. You know, I was very disappointed after that bad loss last week in the first round. It's never easy to come back in the competition after such a long period of inactivity. Everything is difficult, you know, it's hard to focus when you put too much pressure on yourself. But my relative and my coach Ceze helped me to spring to life again, and now I'm very well. I really like this place”, she added with a large smile. “Yeah, these few days were very beneficial for my mental strength. Don’t ask me again about an eventual retirement, this word belongs to the past. Of course I will retire one day, but the time hasn’t come yet”, she explained. “If I lose again in the first round? Oh, I think I will do some shopping”, she laughs. “I think I won’t be too disappointed, especially if I lost against Althea. You know, it's really difficult to play a good friend, and she will be definitely hard to beat because she is in good form according to her recent result in Iceland. But I had more time to rest up, so we will see. I’m ready".

At the end of the day , after they both won their 1st round match , Jeyaseelan enjoyed a training session with good friend Maleeva , signing autographs for their fans and chatting with tournament organisers.
Sonya Jeyaseelan won her 1st round match in Miami, defeating up and commer Shahar Peer of Israel in straight sets of 75 75 on Monday at the American Express Challenge. It's the 4th tournament in a row where Canadian number one wins her 1st round match. " I'm satisfied with the way I played today. I played some solid tennis today , and Shahar was definitely aggressive, she played well , especially at the begining of first set . I started slow , but then I came back to win the first and after that , I felt a bit relieved cause she was making me run for my money . I hope I can go on like that. Next round is gonna be pretty exciting against Farina Elia, the eighth seed." Jeyaseelan enjoyed herself after the match , watching clash between two of her friends, Magdalena Maleeva prevailing against American Althea Gibson in a superb match. "I saw half of the match , Althea was leading when I arrived in the stands, and then Maggie levelled it and won this great match. I hope she goes far here.On contrary, Li Na was defeated in straight sets but I hope we'll have a good doubles match tomorrow."
new-york Jan 9th, 2006, 04:55 PM wow, congrats Maggie, now, i hope you'll go far!!
congrats Sonya.
Angela  , we can't go far this time too, but be ready for the next tournies!! ;)

Ferosh Jan 9th, 2006, 05:11 PM WHO IS NADIA PETROVA?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b321/qax21/petrova.jpg
The tennis world has been buzzing for the last month over a very promising new prospect in women's tennis. The culprit... Nadia Petrova, of Russia. Petrova shocked everyone on the tour when she defeated the number one seeded player, Martina Hingis in the opening round of Wibledon last month.
"It was a very big moment for me," said Petrova. "I came in an unranked player with no professional matches under my belt. I just gave it my all because I had absolutely nothing to lose."
Last week the stunning Russian crashed out in the first round of the Iceland Challenge losing to her compatriot Rodionova in a very tight match.
"I could not give my best tennis last week," proclaimed the tall Russian. "I had a pectoral injury that I sustained due to a growth spurt."
The match was close indeed, but still, the injury was obvious. Petrova was seen wearing a medical patch on the upper right part of her chest. The injury definately tampered with her powerful serve and forehand.
Today was a different story though, Petrova defeated the number ten seed, American Angela Haynes in straight sets at the Amex Challenge.
"I was very happy with my results today after last weeks dissappointment. I was definately being aggresive and my serve was on today," proclaimed Petrova.
Up next for her is M. Krajicek of The Nethelands. As for Nadia, her future looks very promising indeed. So, who is Nadia Petrova? She is definately one to look out for.

Harju. Jan 9th, 2006, 06:16 PM Princess rolls Likhovtseva
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/594/8599504sharapova.jpg
Miami, USA.
The LTT only Princess, Princess Sharapova managed to scrap through against her compatriot Elena Likhovtseva in straight sets 6-3 6-4 to advance to the second round of American Express Challenge where she would play another journeywoman from Japan, Ai Sugiyama who happened to beat another Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in two convincing sets 6-4 7-6 where the Russian made 84 errors during the match.
"Well, Princess has been not doing any press release these past few weeks and Princess would like to apologize as Princess has been very busy with Princess' work which includes, having Princess' very own clothing's line "ORGASMPOVA" which obviously tons better than ANERES and of course the usual craps. Modelling and Partying."
"During that match, Princess has only one strategy which is to make every shot, a power shot. Papa Yuri thought me that. And of course not to forget, Princess likes to annoy her opponent with the constant pumping and shrieking. It worked like magic."
"Princess doesn't see much threat from Ai. However, the only reason Princess would lose this match, will be because Queen Kong *coughSerenacough* loiters around the court with her "GREAT" fashion sense."

M- Hello Althea.
A.G- Hey.
M- It's a bad day, uh?
A.G- Not the best, obviously, you don't like to be out at the first match, i kinda be able to see both sides, the reality. You can win a lot, and lose a lot. It is what it is.
M- What about the match, feel like you played bad?
A.G- oh no. that was a good match again, the score tells it. i mean, that was good, we both played well, but Maggie played better today. So she took her win, i didn't give it to her. Not at all.
M- Feel better on grass?
A.G- I just love to play on grass, the quickness of it. Just love it. I'm mad i missed Wimbledon, but i hope i'll be able to play in the next. But i like hardcourt too. Those are my two fav surfaces, could do without the rest, especially clay, i'm always falling on clay. :o I'm ain't no control-slides-Kim.
M- What do you think of Maggie, in Iceland, she has been affected by a loss, there has been rumors of retirement.
A.G- She's one of the player i get alng with very well. She gave me advices in Iceland, she was really nice. People just don't get that sometimes, you're pissed, you have to say thing, but you don't really think. You know, losing to her really allow me to take distance. I mean, she showed today that nobody can write her off, i really admire her for her career.
M- That loss gives you a lot of time, any plans?
A.G- Well, if you have some propositions, i won't decline. :laughter:.
I think i'll just hit some balls with the other girl, spend some time with my fam livin here in Miami, and definitely, i'll be in the stands to support some players.
M- Enjoy your free time.
A.G- Trust me i will.
TomTennis Jan 9th, 2006, 07:01 PM Davenport Powers through and gets Practicing
http://gblx.cache.el-mundo.net/elmundodeporte/imagenes/2005/08/27/1125170341_0.jpg
Lindsay Davenport opened her LTT summer hardcourt caimpaign earlier today by defeating newcomer Grzybowska 7-6(1) 6-2 in the opening round of the Miami American Express Tournament. Davenport, seeded fifth here, was made to work hard in the first set before finding her form and crusing into round 2.
http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/davenport_7685_rx.jpg
Davenport hit the practice courts early the next morning with practice and doubles partner Martina Hingis, the two grand slam champions are set to face off in a mouth-watering quaterfinal match up. The prospect looks good, as the Australian open winner and Wimbledon Champion have yet to face each other all season.
"Yeh you know we have played plenty of other really great players, but suprisngly we have yet to play each other. It seems that Martina started off the tour playing great, and then died down, yet it took me more time to find my groove and then i seemed to flourish, so with Martina playing great tennis now, i just hope we are both at the top of our games and we are really set to dominate.
Saying that, i just want to concentrate on my next match against Hantuchova. She is a really good player and is really going to challenge me, but i just have to stick to my game plan. I just want to keep moving up the rankings. My main aim this week is to win basically. I want to keep moving up and winning titles, you know, the tour is so competivie now, with Anna losing today, it means Sharapova will be moving to number 6, so i just want to keep moving to. I cant let that thing catch me.
I want to have more titles and be seeded in the top four before the US Open. That is short-term future look ahead, and now for an even more shorter look ahead, im going to practice for my next match."
-VSR- Jan 9th, 2006, 08:18 PM Henin-Hardenne Wins Thriller Against Karantancheva
~Justine Moves On To Round Of 32~
http://www.fromuth.com/photo_gallery/us04/henie-hardenne4.jpg
MIAMI, Florida--- Justine Henin-Hardenne barely escapes the first round of the American Express Challenge. Justine, who has been having some poor results recently on the grass courts, will look to the hardcourts for some wins. J.Henin-Hardenne (BEL) def. S.Karantancheva (BUL) 6-4 5-7 6-4. Justine has 2 match points in the second set at 5-4 40-15. But could not covert on her own serve. She doubles faulted twice in a row. But excellent tennis in the third set, boosted Justine's confidence heading into her next match.
"I think I played pretty well out there. I feel as the match went longer I became more and more better. I love the hardcourts more than the grass, so I like the change of surface. If there is something I need to work on for my next match, I feel it will be my serve. It let me down in the second set, and I just need to work a little more on it. This match gave me some confidence, and gave me a little more match play. So, I feel ready for my next opponent."
Justine will have to be ready, as she will face a seeded player. (13)A.Rodionova of Russia, who has a lopsided three set victory over Karolina Sprem. (13)A.Rodionova (RUS) def. K.Sprem (CRO) 2-6 6-1 6-4. So both ladies will be heading into their match with a three setter under their belt. Justine would really like to have a solid win, and get farther into these tournament. Something she hasn't done since the clay season. Good luck Justine Henin-Hardenne, allez.

Chevina Jan 10th, 2006, 12:09 AM Top Russian prepares for US Hardcourt season
http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/myskina_5885_rx.jpg
"I want to be the winner this week".
FROM MIAMI - Precisely ten weeks have past since former top player Anastasia Myskina won her first title at the Qantas International event in Sydney this year.
Since then, the 22-year-old has reached countless quarterfinals, semifinals, and even finals. However, the top Russian says she wants much, much more.
Already topping the doubles rankings, the doubles race with Daniela Hantuchova and holding the third spot in the Singles rankings, Anastasia Myskina wants to add another title to her name.
"I want to be the winner this week," spoke Myskina. "I think it's important that I can win a title here- the first tournament of the Hardcourt season."
Last week Myskina suffered a shock loss in the second round of the Iceland Challenge in Reykjavic, to top twentier Jelena Jankovic.
"If I can win a title here, I will be that much more confident heading into the US Open next month."
Myskina currently holds the position as the highest ranked player never to make a Grand Slam final.
The third seed meets Alexandra Stevenson, of the United States in the second round- a player she has beaten once before.
UDACHi Jan 10th, 2006, 01:57 AM http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/sr/5/56/Jankovic_Jelena.jpg
Jelena Jankovic used uncharacteristic aggression to finish off Jennifer Capriati in a 76(3) 76(6) nail biter and reach round two of the LTT's latest tournament, held in Miami, Florida.
Unseeded Jelena Jankovic has been playing very well as of late. Is the Serb playing well enough to enter the top sixteen? That is the young starlet's current goal. The determined baseliner rushed the net an usually high amount of times and quickly pinpointed Jennifer Capriati's weak assets as she sneaked through to the second round of the LTT American Express Challenge in 1 hour and 58 minutes. Jankovic would finish the match off by acing on her first match point to win 76(3) 76(6).
"I feel like I am consistent for once. Since the French Open, I have gone 7-4, something like that. I mean, that makes me really proud of myself. I could barely win before but I really started to train hard and now I'm gradually improving."
Jankovic will next play Patty Schnyder. Her elder Swiss oponent holds a 1-0 edge in Head-to-Head confrontations, but the loss left a sour taste in Jankovic's mouth.
"I lost to her last time we played. That is really my most memorable loss. Well, that and Wimbledon. I believe the score was 06 63 63. But, yeah, I mean, that definitely won't be on my mind tomorrow. I am surely good enough to win over Patty and I will be looking to do so."
Jankovic will compete in the doubles event once again, despite her lack of significant results of any kind. Partering with Ting Li, the team has yet to win a match together.

http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/3746/io17119gallery3lb.jpg
Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus celebrates her upset over the 14th seed Iveta Benesova.
MAIMI, Florida -- Belarussian Viktoria Azarenka upset the 14th seed Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 4-6 7-6(6) 7-5.
"I thought I played really good today," Azarenka said with a big smile on her face. "I'm excited to get a win over a seed and in this fashion. It was really tough out there today."
Azarenka used power and precision on her groundstrokes to come back from a first set loss to even the match at one set all. Azarenka held her nerve in the third set as she was able to close out the third set and the match.
"I knew I could play at this level of tennis and now I know I can compete with some of the top girls. Hopefully I'll keep improving so I can continue to rise up the rankings."
The talented teenager next takes on Elena Dementieva who was a 6-1 6-4 winner over Jelena Dokic.
"Elena's got a strong game, especially from the baseline. She can really play from the baseline which is similiar to me. If I can serve well and hit my shots from the ground and at the net I think I have a chance," said Azarenka.

Wins with Henin-Hardenne
http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1250000/images/_1253798_afp_venus.jpg
Miami, USA - 11th seed, Venus Williams, advanced to the Round of 16 at the LTT American Express Challenge in Miami, United States. The American, in her home country for one of the first times this year, defeated Russian, Elena Bovina, 6-7(0) 7-6(1) 6-4 in a three hour marathon, in a match that was filled with countless unforced errors and terrible serving.
"Wow, Elena really played the best match of her life here. I mean, what more could she have asked for?," Venus said. "But honestly, this was one of the worst matches of my career. Did you see how many unforced errors I hit? I made some terrible decisions out there and I'll need to work on my game if I want to do anything major here."
Venus hit a whopping forty-three winners and six aces, but also added sixty-seven unforced errors and twelve double faults. Despite these serving statistics, nobody broke serve in the opening two sets, as they split tiebreak dominance. But, it was Venus who broke serve for the only time in the last game of the match, and that game sealed the victory for her.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1250000/images/_1253798_venus_wins.jpg
In Doubles action, Venus and her Doubles partner, Justine Henin-Hardenne, knocked out Sania Mirza and Rita Kuti Kis, and advanced to the Round of 16. Unlike Venus' previous match, this 6-4 6-7(2) 6-4, was filled with amazing tennis from both sides of the court, with most points ending with winners.
"I thought it was a great match. Justine and I really attacked and read each other's plays well," Venus mentioned. "You know, after having such a successful start to the year, we let ourselves go and stopped consistent practicing, but we really want to be Doubles specialists and we are planning on dominating here in Miami."

MIAMI-Jeyaseelan struggled with her serve all day long and could not prevail in any of her two matches in day 2.
Farina Elia(8) def. Jeyaseelan 67(4) 64 75
Chakvetadze/S.Williams def. Jeyaseelan/Li 57 75 62
Canada's Sonya Jeyaseelan had a bad day at the American Express Challenge held in Miami , as she lost both her matches after serving for the match in both.
She began playing 1st round match along with Chinese Li Na . The duo was up 75 54 against Anna Chakvetadze and Serena Williams, Jeyaseelan to serve . In this long game of 16 points , Jeyaseelan and Li saved 5 break points but could not finish the match as Jeyaseelan served a double fault in the 6th break point, her 8th in the match . "Gosh, I was feeling so low after serving this stupid double fault , I mean we were so close to the win , and we were fighting so hard to hold serve, and then I came with this. It totally got me out of the match.I never held serve after that." Indeed , Chakvetadze levelled the score in the next game with an ace, and Jeyaseelan lost twice her serve in the final set, the two only breaks . Chakvetadze ended tha match as she ended the 2nd set , by an ace. "I feel so sorry for Na , we were so close to win and I totally blew our chances.i can't believe we can't manage to win a match in doubles , sure we won some , but usually we're out first match, yet we are quite close friends and we try to work hard , but our doubles record is a disaster..."
Then , Jeyaseelan had an hour to prepare for her singles 2 nd round clash against world n°8, but the story repeated as she served for the match at 5/4 in the 3rd set , after wasting a MP at 5/3.
The first set was of great intensity, both players holding serves after long battles . In second set , Jeyaseelan lost focus and lost serve once, enough for Farina to level the score (67 64) and then came this 3rd set . Jeyaseelan finally managed to break and take the lead , but again, she blew her chances. "It's been a really hard day, I'm so angry after myself. I had match point against 8th seeded player, and I could not take advantage of it , she served very well today. And the next game , my demons came back to haunt me as I lost my serve to love . And again, I frustrated myself and lost the two final games , I'm so pissed. It's really been an awful way to leave the tournament , I was feeling so great , I had good times practicing with Maggie yesterday and with Li today. But I guess I'll have to work harder and harder.I'm far from reaching the goals I fixed. I had a better run last week when the conditions were awful for me , and this week as I felt good, things turned out very bad.I'm very disappointed ,and very frustrated, it's the worst day I've ever had for a long time on the tour."jeyaseelan said in the press conference.Jeyaseelan now has almost no chance to reach the top 16 and to be seeded at the US Open .

-VSR- Jan 10th, 2006, 07:44 PM Justine Henin-Hardenne Takes Out 13th Seed In Miami
~JHH Climbs Into Round Of 16~
http://www.justine-henin-hardenne.net/images/miami05_27.jpg
MIAMI, Florida--- Justine Henin-Hardenne battles into the Round Of 16 at the American Express Challenge located in Miami. Justine had to battle back from a set down to win her match, she is playing quite well at the moment. J.Henin-Hardenne (BEL) def. (13)A.Rodionova (RUS) 3-6 6-4 6-4. It was a very high quality match, and all sets were very close. But Justine was able to come back from 3-4 down and win the next three games.
"She played very good tennis. Rodionova is a very tough opponent, and I think I handled the match greatly. When I was down, I started to play with better precision and more confidence. That is something, that I believe, has been lacking from my game in the past. I next play Myskina, I have heard, she is such a good athlete. I will need to be playing my best tennis tomorrow, or I will have no chance. But crazier things have happened."
Justine Henin-Hardenne vs. Kim Clijsters is sure to draw a good crowd tomorrow. Myskina has had such good results all throughout her season, she is ranked #2 in the world. Justine is a great athlete also, but she seems to be lacking something that the top players are all having. Consistency comes to mind, and confidence. This could be Henin-Hardenne's week but will she be able to overcome the fiesty Russian. Good luck Justine, and hope to see you in the Quarter-Finals.

Jelena Jankovic defeated Patty Schnyder 76(3) 64 to enter the Miami round of 16.
Fifteenth seeded Patty Schnyder and Jelena Jankovic exchanged some harsh words before their second round match at the LTT American Express Challenge. In their one previous meeting, Schnyder came back to defeat her opponent for a 06 63 63 win. On this occasion, however, Jankovic would level the series with her deadly backhand and consistent serve by a score of 76(3) 64.
"This is really big for my confidence. Patty underestimated me today, I think. I served very good and hit well off the ground. I'm satisfied and I hope to score a win tomorrow. I'm just going to go for my shots because, yeah, I am more confident than ever."
Jankovic hit 40 winners and 33 unforced errors, one of the Serb's cleaner matches. Schnyder played predictable and Jankovic out did the lefty's erratic game with ease.
On the doubles court, Jankovic and Chinese partner Ting Li defeated Schnyder and her doubles partner, Ksenia Palkina 76(6) 67(5) 76(2).
"I like playing with Li a lot. She has a good game and it compliments mine well. We haven't been that successful but she's a nice girl so we just stuck it out. Now maybe the results will start to come a little more. But, yeah, I wish that match had lasted not so long because it took a lot of energy out there today. I mean, I'm glad I played singles before doubles today", said a cheerful Jankovic.

Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus hits a forehand during her loss to Elena Dementieva.
MIAMI, Florida -- Rising tennis star Viktoria Azarenka fell to Elena Dementieva 4-6 7-5 2-6 in the second round of the American Express Challenge.
"I'm kind of disappointed how I wilted in the third set," Azarenka said with a depressed look on her face. "I felt I played good in the first two sets and I was hoping I could win the 1st, but I didn't. I bounced back in the second set to win it, but in the third set Dementieva picked up her game and my level of tennis dropped. It was also hot out there today."
The Belarussian also lost her doubles match partnering with Vera Douchevina. They lost 4-6 1-6 to Nadia Petrova and Karolina Sprem.
"I had no energy in the doubles match so I didn't expect to do so well there. But it's always fun to play doubles no matter if you win or lose."
Azarenka will head off to the next stop on her busy schedule to train for her upcoming tournament next week.
"I got a good win this week so I'm going to take some positives from that and I'm also going to try to fix the negative things as well," said Azarenka.
The Belarussian hopes to go deeper in the draws soon.

Myskina rallied past Justine Henin-Hardenne
in straight sets.
MIAMI, Florida - Russia's Anastasia Myskina progressed a step-further in obtaining the $950,000 prize-money in Miami this afternoon, as the third seed outsted Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne in straight sets.
"I was playing very well in the first set," Myskina said. "Then she started mixing the balls, and I was having trouble getting the ball in."
Myskina, who has achieved the highest ranking in singles and doubles this year, looked impressive off all areas of the court.
"But my forehand was my strength today," Myskina explained. "I was able to substitute her slice into some powerful shots."
After recovering from a shock loss to Jelena Jankovic in Iceland last week, Myskina says she's been playing better ever since.
"I'm feeling very confident this week. It's good for me,'
"I am constructing the points well, and I'm not making as many errors as I've done the last couple of weeks."
Henin-Hardenne, who upset thirteenth Anastassia Rodionova in three sets, must have been disappointed with her result today.
Up next for Myskina will be intense American Venus Williams.
The pair previously met in Birmingham four weeks ago, where Myskina took the battle in straight sets.
"She's playing very well lately, but I'm playing better," Myskina justified.
In other matches today, top seed Kim Clijsters was upstaged in three sets by Russian Elena Dementieva, while fellow Russian Maria Sharapova and Silvia Farina-Elia of Italy, were the only other seeds to fall.

Venus wins classic
http://www.tennisroundup.com/events/2001/2001EricssonOpen/Page5/webwfin/venus63.jpg
Miami, USA - Venus Williams won her third consecutive three-set match at the LTT American Express Challenge in Miami, United States. The elder Williams Sister knocked out Frenchwoman, Mary Pierce, 75 06 75 in what onlookers dubbed "one of the we have ever seen."
The match was intense from the beginning. Venus raced to a four-love lead before things became dramatic. Pierce fought back to even the match at five games, a piece, but Venus was able to pull through the opening set using trademark backhand swing volleys and unreturnable serves.
The second set was probably the highest quality set, believe it or not. Both players were pushing each other deep into the court, but it was Mary Pierce who almost always had the last laugh. She made up for Venus' booming serves with perfectly angled drives and supreme-touch backhand dropshots, leaving Williams speechless.
"The second set...I mean, I really don't think I have played much better than that. I was hitting the ball so well, but Mary was coming up with these shots...I have never been in such awe of anyone before, not even Serena. But, Mary left me speechless," Venus said, many times just closing her eyes in remembrance of such beautiful quality.
In the third set, the tennis was spectacular. More unforced errors, but also more winners, included with some of the most physical rallies ever seen on an Ladies Tennis Tour court. The Miami crowd gave a standing ovation after a grueling two hours and forty-three minutes of captivating tennis, before Venus' matchpoint. One which ended with a twenty-four stroke rally.
"I was so happy...I mean, the final point was so physical. I've never ran so much, I'm sure Mary hasn't, either. Those points make you think 'Why do I put myself through this pressure?' But, I guess I'm loving tennis...Or maybe, after today's match, I'm loving angels, instead."

Jelena Jankovic overpowered Marta Domachowska 64 75 to enter the LTT American Express Challenge quarterfinals without the loss of a set.
Wednesday in Miami began with the courts being cleared of heavy rains. By the time play began at 11 AM, the courts had been cleared and so had the skies. The overcast was gone and the sun sizzled the courts, hot enough to fry an egg in the 91 degree heat. The first match of the night session would be a closely contested two set match between two young players, Jelena Jankovic and Marta Domachowska. As the sun set on the court, Jankovic would walk off a 64 75 winner in the ninety minute contest.
"In the second set, Marta had points to go up 5-2, but I fought so hard. It was really hot, even as the sun was setting, and she just kept getting the ball in play, it was incredible. The atmosphere was wonderful. I think that people were just soaking up the great tennis, appreciating it all. I doubt that the crowd was thinking 'Oh, two unseeded girls Yuck.' You know, I think they were just really happy to see this match. And I was happy to be playing because, yeah, I still havent dropped a set this week and I feel awesome."
Jankovic will next meet twelfth seeded Monica Seles. The powerful left hander has been pounding her way to victory after victory this week and seems extremely comfortable on the quick Floridian courts.
"I watched Monica's match tonight. She played right after me so I took a quick shower and ate and then when I came out it was only the beginning of the second set. I'm just going to try and break her rhythym tomorrow and I'm really hoping she's tired."
In doubles, Jankovic and Ting Li were bombarded with winners from Domachowska and Gryzbowska, as they lost a 76(0) 26 62 match to their opponents, themselves, and the heat.
"I've been playing so much this week. After two long matches in doubles, I must admit that it is sort of satisfying to lose. I'm now really focused on the singles tournament and, yeah. Im very hungry and I haven't lost a set in singles this week. I feel very good on court. I'm having fun, playing my tennis. It's fantastic."

Anastasia Myskina took out home
favourite Venus Williams in a tough three-setter.
FROM MIAMI - In one of the most vigourous matches of the year, a highly anticpated match up between former world number one Anastasia Myskina, and American crowd favourite Venus Williams surfaced.
Myskina took the match in three sets 6:3, 4:6, 6:4 in a drawn out yet exciting match.
"I played good today," said Myskina. "I was a little bit nervous early on, because I wanted to win badly,"
Venus Williams, who was coming off victories over Mary Pierce, Elena Bovina and Ting Li, surely tested the third seed in a riviting, high-quality battle.
"I fought for every point," Myskina spoke. "That's what won me the match today."
Anastasia Myskina meets twelfth seed Monica Seles in the semifinals, who took out Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro also in three sets.
"I know she'll have the crowd support tomorrow, but I've already beaten two Americans this week, so hopefully I can beat another." said Myskina.
Buitenzorg Jan 12th, 2006, 10:40 AM MOLIK cruised to SF despite another 3 tough sets battle!

Well, well, well! what can I say? once I raise my game, "What out girls!"
I don't mind playing tough matches, this makes me feel strong and stronger! and realise If I put 100% onto my games I will be able to win it! I believe I can be one of LTT major threat soon, I am not afraid playing those tough girls out there, just to execute my game perfectly and I am there level up with them!
In 2005, I wasn't put myself 100% into this tour, with so many issues that I had (injuries and try to find a better coach, etc!) this new year 2006, could be my year to step up and shine, show them that I am the New Alicia Molik with plenty of talent and attitude in the game!

Ferosh Jan 12th, 2006, 05:58 PM Petrova Out After Marathon Match
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b321/qax21/petrova42zv.jpg
In what was hailed as the match of the day, Nadia Petrova's dream run finally came to an end today. In a match that went on for more than three hours, Australia's Alicia Molik sent Nadia packing 5-7 7-5 7-5. Both ladies fought with everything they had in the intense heat in Miami.
"It was a very intense match," said Petrova. "We both stepped it up a notch everytime we were behind. Alicia played very well, and I wish her luck in the semifinals."
When asked if she was upset about losing the match, Petrova responded, "no, I am not upset at all. "I'm very happy with my results in this tournament. It's only my third tournament, for me to get all the way to the quarterfinals, speaks a lot for my game and my potential. I would have liked to have won the match, but it's not always going to be that way. I have to learn from the mistakes I made today. My coach Dementrova, always takes notes, so I'm pretty sure we'll have a long discussion tonight."
