Anna-Lena Sets Up Grudge Match

http://images.tsn.ca/images/stories/20050729/wta_74924.jpg
Anna-Lena advanced out of the first round today with a victory over Elena Dementieva.

Reykjavic, Iceland - Anna-Lena Groenefeld continued her consistent play with a first round victory over Russian Elena Dementieva with a score of 1-6 6-3 6-4. She sets up yet another match against Swiss Patty Schnyder, also a good friend on tour.

The match started off well for Dementieva, as Groenefeld's game was nowhere to be found. "I was just rusty after a long break," Groenefeld confessed. "I'm glad I was able to pick things up."

This victory is part of another confidence boost that Groenefeld received after reaching the Quarterfinals of Wimbledon, where she lost to eventual winner Lindsay Davenport. "I feel like I'm more confident now," she said. "I can beat the players I'm supposed to beat and challenge the top players, even on an off-day."

The German will need to bring her A-game tomorrow when she takes on Patty Schnyder, whom she has lost to consistently in singles and doubles.

"You know, I think it's going to be a great match whoever wins," she said. "I hope I can win, but I'll be happy with losing to my good friend."

SO CLOSE!!! I CANT BELEIVE THIS!!!!:sad::sad:yeah it's a disaster for Maggie too :hysteric: Maleeva, 30, is seriously thinking about her retirement at the end or before the end of the season  See what's she said during the press conference:

Maggie, lacking confidence, may retire before the end of the year!

http://eur.news1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/ap_photo/20050627/all/l1473348.jpg
Maggie, 30, has decided that her tennis career on the WTA Tour may have to come to a halt

"Im getting old you know, she said during the press conference, my comeback is not as successful as I imagine at first. You know, my results are terrible in great events, and I don't speak about my doubles game with Elena, she added. I feel very sorry for her, we haven't won one single doubles match together this season."

Maggie explained her feeling about the today loss:

"I tried to play and prepare for this one like any other match, professional and serious, but after 6-3 in the 1st and 4-1 in the 3rd, it was, you know, really difficult. I really thought I could win the match and the whole time I thought I am going to come back, but it was okay emotionally."

She then spoke about a possible retirement:

"I think the main reason behind my decision is that I have the feeling that something is missing for me to win matches, you know. I am missing that certain kind of drive or motivation that makes you push yourself all the time, but I think I am hitting the ball better than ever. I am seeing the game better than ever, you know, I am more mature. I am perfect almost, but this is not enough. It is something you need when you are younger. I have played professional for 15 years, and I don’t have that energy anymore."

"I don’t practise as much as I did. I feel very tired after practising. I hate to travel, I love to stay at home. I have a beautiful life at home, I just don’t like to leave. Maybe it's normal after so many years."

She didn't tell about her plans for the future because "You know, it's not 100% sure that I am going to stop, she added. Only if I have some kind of a vision in two months that I am going to win a Grand Slam I might continue."

Let's hope Maggie will go back over her decision and will follow her coach advice: "She needs to concentrate on her game, she has the game, but she's lacking confidence, and that's why she lost again today in a very tight match, explained Ceze. She needs to play in a more agressive way, but everything is possible for her, once the confidence is back. You know, it's never easy to stay concentrate when you have missed more than half the season. She put the pressure on herself, her objective was to integrate the top 20 before the end of the year, but it seems it was a too high objective, and she's just realized it now. Let her some time, we will work together on her confidence problem, he added."

Maggie has been on the tour for over 16 years. Now, at the age of 30, let's hope it's not her last season on the LTT circuit.

Maggie's coach reaction after Hingis' coach comment:
"All the players are not Martina, some are less determined and more sensitive after a loss, he explained. Some coaches just speak too much and should mind their own business", he added, rolling his eyes. "I know the way how to speak to Maggie, and you know, if she talked about an eventual retirement, that doesn't mean that she will retire, you know, it's just the shock, it was her reaction outright. It's obvious that she is lacking confidence at the moment, but she has to know that it's only her 1st loss at this stage of a tournament this season. That's not so bad!" he claimed with a large smile. He finally added: "The comments of some other coaches are very inappropriate at the moment"

Seeds Advance

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-11/13/xin_211101131548027161099.jpghttp://www.tribuneindia.com/2002/20020902/sp2.jpghttp://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20040729/images/2004-07-29s_davenport.jpg
Above: World number 2 Myskina enjoys an early practice session after reciveing a walkover; 10th seeded Venus Williams was one of many seeds to advance into Round32; Wimbledon Champion Lindsay Davenport powered her way through into the next round in straight sets.

For the first time on the LTT tour, all seeds except one advanced into the Round of 32. The higher ranked player not to survive the opener was 6th seeded Russain Anna Kournikova, who now could lose her number 6 ranking to 7th seeded Maria Sharapova, if Maria is able to keep up her good play and get far into the tournament.

The first round provided some well needed tests for many players, whilst some managed to find their groove immeditaly and pass into the next round in straight sets. Tomorrows matches look to provide some real entertainment and possible upsets. Former world number 1 Martina Hingis goes up against Wimbledon quater-finalist Dinari Safina in a bid to make her claim back on top of the LTT rankings. After reciving a walkover in the opening round, second seeded Myskina takes on dangerous serbian Jelena Jankovic. After reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals Myskina is looking to take her second title of the year, but will have to brush off some holiday cobwebs as her lesser ranked opponent has already played her first match back from the seasons break.

Above: Maria Sharapova faces a tough challenge in the next round, however should she survive she may move up in the rankings ; Australian Open Champion Martina Hingis shows she is back with a hard fought win; French Open Champion and world number 1 Kim Clijsters moves on in straight sets.

Defending Champion and Wimbledon winner Lindsay Davenport, now ranked 5, takes on Vera Zvonareva in a repeat of their first round Wimbledon match. Davenport was made to work hard after her 5-7 7-6(4) 7-6(1) victory over the russain a few weeks earlier. Newly crowned world number 1 and French Open Champion Kim Clijsters was one of only a handful of players to advance in straight sets. The two tiebreak sets were close, however Kim had the upper hand in both, and will now take on the youngster Nicole Vaidosova. Maria Sharapova faces a tough task also, going up against Sesil Karantechva after Sesil thrashed her first round opponent 6-2 6-0.

It looks as though tomorrow the top seeds have their work cut out. Will they survive once again and square off in the round of 16, or will they fall? Lets hope its the first! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Patty Schnyder after her first round win.

It's about time. Patty Schnyder has finally had a comfortable win. After weeks of scraping through matches, Patty Schnyder has advanced to the Round of 32 at the Central Bank of Iceland Challenge with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ai Sugiyama. Schnyder was thankful that she played Sugiyama, as Sugiyama's dislike of grass is almost as apparent as Patty's.

Yeah, it was a tough match out there. I don't think either of us is comfortable playing on grass. I keep trying to slide, but I fall straight on my butt. It's kind of embarrassing. I'm expecting much tougher matches in the next rounds, though. Anna-Lena was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon, although she didn't have to play anyone. Then Hingis, who I've beaten before so I'm not too worried about her.

Patty does indeed take on Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the next round. Patty has played ALG many times before, and hasn't lost yet. Although the result could be different on grass, Patty is still looking like she is going to win. Patty Schnyder and Ksenia Palkina will be the seventh seeds in doubles this week, following their improbable run to the Wimbledon final last week. The draw hasn't been released yet.

An interview with Sonya Jeyaseelan (CAN) :

MODERATOR: questions please !!

Q: good morning Sonya. So , how was your Christmas break? Enjoyed it?

A:  I had a great first week , back in family , I spent some time with friends I hadn't seen for some time, it's always good to get some resources along with one's acquaintances. Unfortunately, I planned to practice on the 2nd week of this break , and after Christmas , I was ill all week long.Hence, I could not prepare as well for Reykjavik as I wished.

Q: You still won your 1st round match, after a huge fight against Elena Bovina.Congrats !

A: Thank you. I didn't expect to win this match. I played very well in the first set , was kinda impressed actually , everything was working , I was playing my best tennis . But after that , I lost focus as I felt extremely exhausted.
I still managed to win, but it was an intense match , very close, long rallies, I didn't have the energy to go to the net , which I tried to do in Birmingham, successfully. Elena fought hard , and could have won the match-it could have gone either ways. I guess she was a bit more anxious as the match was progressing , it's a pity for her , cause she had the match in her hands. I'm glad I could prevail in this match cause I didnt have time to practice here.

Q: What are you expecting for your next match..?

A: I'm expecting a tough one. My opponent is Safarova , she's one of the players I have to beat to improve my ranking , cause she's ranked a few places above me. But she's a very good player , with ups and downs, but in a good day, she can beat everyone. And she had a bye in 1st round, so she'll be fresher than me , especially after this long match I played , in cold weather ...

Q: Are you saying you're still ill ?

A: I 'm feeling a lot better than last week, but I haven't completely recovered . I'll have to pay attention to try to regain form the sooner, the better.

Q: Your impressions about first round results ?

A: well , it's incredible , the seeds did an awesome job, they started strong right from the begining of the tournament. Only one of them failed to reach 2nd round: the one who beat me in Wimbledon , Kournikova I guess is her name. I was very surprised to see Althea Gibson play , she's an awesome newcomer, she's an ethnic player , like me or the Williams sister , and my coach knows hers , so I went to see this match , I predict Althea will be a tough opponent . And I also watched my friend Maggie Maleeva, unfotunately she lost and was pretty disturbed after the match.Hopefully she gets her acts together again-she saw her husband during the break , and I guess she wanted the break to be longer to spend more time with him.

MODERATOR: Well, thanks for the talk Sonya, good luck in this tournament

A: Thanks , I'll need it cause it's a very big tournament and everyone is willing to do well here, the tour has become very competitive in the last few weeks...

"I'd be intimidated, too"
Venus advances to R32

http://pic19.pic.wretch.cc/photos/1/v/vswfan/17/1091429499.jpg

REYKJAVIC - Venus Williams advanced to the Round of 32 of the LTT Central Bank of Iceland Challenge in Reykjavic, Iceland, earlier today with a walkover win over Argentinean, Gisela Dulko. The reasons why Dulko withdrew from the match were unstated, but Williams knew the real reason.

"I would be intimidated, too. I mean, your first match of the tournament, and you draw me. I mean, who wants to play me? Nobody. Everybody just wants me to lose and I'm fine with that. I'm better than all of these bitches anyways," Venus said.

Venus seemed a little angry that Dulko was nowhere to be seen. "I mean, it would have been nice to have played someone today, just to get myself in a rhythm before the semifinals and finals, but..." Venus trailed off.

Williams is up against American, Alexandra Stevenson in the Round of 16. "Alex...I mean, she, like a lot of the women here are talented, but...you have to have more than talent to beat me. You need to have extreme precision, and prayers...to God and beyond."

Henin-Hardenne Moves On At Iceland
~Justine Wins In Straight Sets~

http://news2.thdo.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39125000/jpg/_39125942_serena_justine300x200afp.jpg

REYKJAVIK, Iceland--- Justine Henin-Hardenne continues her quest to break the Top 16. She moves another step forward by taking out Serena Williams, of the United States. J.Henin-Hardenne (BEL) def. S.Williams (USA) 7-5 6-4. It was a close match, but Justine broke Serena's serve when it counted. Noe Justine will go onto the next round and take on (15) Angela Haynes, also of the United States. Haynes is ranked #15, so if Justine can take her out, she may be able to close the gap between them a little bit.

"I am really excited. After ze long break, I am glad to be back on tour. I zink I played well against Serena. I will have to keep playing like zat, if I want to go far into zis tournament. I really want to get into the Top 16, at least by the U.S. Open. Zat is my main goal. So I will really be putting some extra work into zis upcoming events, starting here."

Justine had a straight sets win, while Angela had a three set win. This may give JHH a little more confidence going into this match, and should be a great match. The winner of this match is going to go on and face either (2) Myskina, who isheavily favored, or Jelena Jankovic. Either way it will be a tough battle for both ladies. Good luck Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Moderator- First and Foremost Congrats Althea.

Althea Gibson- Well thank you.

M- Tell us how you feel about your debuts on the tour, your preparation, your reaction about the draw...

A.G- It has been difficult, you know, the Ladies Tennis Tour is where the best are playing, as a player, you want to be a part of this, but it's also frightening, you know, i was prepared for a loss, especially against...

M- The Sixth Seed...

A.G- Definitely.Anna... She is among the top player, i felt like i was unluncky, but that was also a great chance, because the more you play with the best, the more you progress. Today, i played the toughest match of my life, i just felt like i had to match her level of play, i didn't thought about winning until 5-5 third set. i just looked at what i did in the previous sets and told myself that i could try to take the whole.
But definitely, i wouldn't have been able to play that good if i hadn't faced a player that gives me great standarts to reproduce.

M- Does it give you extra confidence for your next match?

A.G- For sure, i feel stronger, but beating Anna does not mean that i can beat every lower-ranked player, that's my first win and it could be my only for a while. Whoever i face, i just tell myself that i have to play well because my opponent is dangerous.

M- Ready to celebrate?

A.G- laughter. Ready to sleep. I'll just rest, i just feel broken, and you know i'll have to run tommorow too.

M- Thanx Althea, have a good rest, and good luck for tommorow.

Jelena Jankovic outlasted Alicia Molik in a 61 46 76(6) war on day one of the LTT Central Bank of Iceland Challenge.

Jelena Jankovic tends to play lots of three setters and, win or lose, the talented Serb always puts her heart and soul into every match. Arriving in Iceland, a rusty Jankovic had not played since her devastating loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round of Wimbledon.

"I think that after my Wimbledon match, I was just so depressed that I thought I would never win again. So, it's good for me to come out here and dictate Alicia today. In a lot of the points, I was able to expose her weak backhand and, I think I scouted her very well."

Jankovic fell victim to a second set lapse, but was able to bounce back and secure the 61 46 76(6) victory on her third match point. The match would last for all of 2 hours and 15 minutes.

"Next up for me will be Anastasia [Myskina] and she had a walkover, I think. I really am tired right now so I am going to get a quick nap and then have some dinner. Tomorrow I will play Anastasia and I just hope that I can use my groundstrokes to move her around. I will have to play my best because, obviously, Anastasia is no slouch."

Jankovic will play doubles for the second week in a row with newcomer Ting Li.

Azarenka's Debut Unsuccessful

http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/5610/vika57jh.jpg
Viktoria Azarenka shows her frustration as she argues a line call during her loss to Lindsay Davenport.

REYKJAVIC, Iceland -- Viktoria Azarenka lost her debut match as she fell to the No.4 seed Lindsay Davenport, 5-7 2-6.

"I played good in the first set," said Azarenka. "Then I kind of fell apart in the second because I was upset that I didn't pull the first one out."

Azarenka led 5-2 in the first set before Davenport got five straight games.

"I'm disappointed that I couldn't close that set out, but I guess that will come with experience. Lindsay played good so I'll give a lot of credit to her for this match, but I still made too many errors to win so she deserved to win."

Azarenka hopes that next week she will be able to show more of her talent off and get a few wins.

"I was nervous for my debut match, but I think next week I'll be more calm and be able to play my tennis."

Azarenka will stay on the tournament grounds to watch the action.

Haynes Battles Through in Iceland

(15)A.Haynes (USA) def. M.Maleeva (BUL) 6-3 4-6 7-5

http://cache.wtnphotos.com/500/8266273haynes.jpg
Young American Angela Haynes advanced to the round of 32 at the LTT Central Bank of Iceland Challenge in Reykjavic by defeating talented veteran Magdalena Maleeva 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Haynes, mostly known for her consistent doubles results with Kim Clijsters, the world number 1, has been trying out a new strategy the last two weeks. She had to use all of her talent to take out Maleeva, who was pinning Haynes far in the backcourt with consistenly deep groudstrokes. "She is a great player," Haynes remarked, "I am happy that I am winning some singles matches now." In the next round Haynes plays Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne. Haynes is also entered in doubles with Kim Clijsters. "I am so lucky to have Kim as a partner," said Haynes, "I want to thank her for sticking by me through some of my shaky results and being a great friend."

Farina Elia Advances!

http://www.taipeitimes.com/images/2005/01/08/20050107203742.jpeg

8th seed Silvia Farina Elia advanced through the first round of the Central Bank of Iceland Challenge here in Reykjavic with a straight sets 6-4 6-4 win over Chinese Ting Li and now faces Ksenia Palkina in the second round. Li put up a brave fight and had Farina Elia worried but the Wimbledon doubles champion held her nerve and managed to secure the victory. Talking of doubles, Farina Elia and partner Stephanie Dubois have jumped up the rankings. They are seeded for the first time and face Shaui Peng and her partner Ai Sugiyama in the opening round.

Farina Elia said 'I am very happy to go through because I have had a bad grass court season for my standards but I am here in round two and looking forward to my next match against Ksenia because it will be tough just like Ting was today!! There are so many good girls on the tour these days'

When asked about here doubles chances, Silvia responded 'It will be alot tougher here than that Wimbledon because we will be expected to play well here and that will be different for us but I think we will be able to handle it. Im glad I chose Steph to be my partner because I dont think I would have won a doubles slam with anyone else'

The final question that was put to the eighth seed was about the possible retirement of fellow player and over the big 30 Maggie Maleeva. Farina Elia smiled and said 'I understand where Maggie was coming from! I felt like that earlier this season down in Australia, you have to remember that when you reach 30 you start to wonder if you can compete with the younger players but I think she will stay'

QUESTION!

How many players make the singles YEC?
Doubles?
Mixed?

ANSWER:

We will have the Top 16 Ranked Players for Singles and Top 8 Ranked Doubles Teams (according to the Doubles race), for The LTT: Masters (YEC).

Unfortunately we will not be having a Championship for Mixed Doubles this season.

:wavey: If you do not make the LTT: Masters (YEC) you will have the opportunity to make some points in the T1B - Still to be announced.

Hope this helps! :D ;) :bounce:

Rnd 32: (1)K.Clijsters (BEL) def. N.Vaidisova (CZE) 7-5 7-5

Top seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters moved into the Round 16 of the Central Bank Of Iceland Challenge on Tuesday with a 7-5, 7-5 win over up and coming youngster Nicole Vaidisova.

Vaidisova was undone by Clijsters powerful passing shots and intelligent use of angles.

However, the young 16 year-old did show some of the form that seemed to trouble the World Number One, when she battled back to 5-5 after trailing 1-4 in the opening set.

Clijsters then produced some superb shots to take the set in great style, with a double-handed backhand down the line.

"It was tough, my first two matches have been alot harder then I expected. These young girls are really playing well."

The Czech matched Clijsters shot-for-shot in the second set until the score reached 5-5, even saving a breakpoint with a blistering volley in the third game.

But Clijsters picked up the pace when it mattered, breaking Vaidisova in the eleventh game and holding her on serve to seal the victory.

“I was satisfied with the way I played today. It was a pretty consistent performance against a tough player. I made her push it and she made a few mistakes.” said Clijsters afterwards.

Myskina will next play Canadian; Sonya Jeyaseelan in Rnd 16 tomorrow.

Ana posts straights sets win after struggle

http://www.ana-ivanovic.net/gallery/albums/hopman06/normal_hopman15.jpg

Ana Ivanovic is through to the round of 16 by beating Francesca Schiavone of Italy 7-6(6) 6-1. Ana had difficulty closing out the first set as she wasted 3 set points.

"It was nerve-racking. I took a long break from tennis and it didn't help when my first round opponent Mary Pierce withdrew. I was just very rusty and had difficulty stringing points together."

Ana led 5-4, serving for the set when Francesca mounted a courageous comeback, saving 3 set points and bringing the first set to a tie-break. Faced with the first set point against her at 6-5 Schiavone, Ana served an ace to level the score and eventually won it when Francesca made a costly error.

"After the first set, I started to get into the rhythm. Also, I think Francesca is too exhausted. I'm very impressed by her and she can only improve. I hope to continue winning so as to finally win my first title."

Davenport thanks the Iceland crowd for all their support.

Well it was inevitable. Lindsay Davenports reign on teh grass has come to an end at the hands of young russain Vera Zvonereva. She is the only player to beat Davenport on the grass courts this year, as Davenport holds an impressive 12-1 win loss record on the turf. It was a similar scoreline to last week, however this time Vera knew just what to do, winning 7-5 6-7(4) 7-5.

"You know, it was really stupid of me. SO what if i had won last week, i still should have changed points. From the moment i didnt change my stratergy i just handed her victory, I knew after the entry deadline that seeing her name in the draw i would be gone. All she had to do was mimic her play in the first set and she had it. It was my fault.

Now that i have over with, i have to congratulate her. Im not too upset actually. Im glad that i can go home back to LA and practice for the hardcourts, because I want to have a similar record to what i have on grass. Maybe it would have been nicer had this loss come a little later in the tournament, as Iceland is where it all began for me, but im leaving here with one trophy under one arm, and the Wimbledon dish under another, so you know, you cant be too about that."

Reykjavik,3rd JanuaryYoungster Sesil Karatantcheva loses in a thriller to Maria Sharapova after 3hours and 4 minutes.

The match was very close and the women fought very hard, but Maria was lucky and won the match, she already led 7-5 5-2,but gave that lead away and Karatantcheva another chance to fight. The tie break was amazingly close and Sesil won it.No one wanted to hit an error in the last setafter Sharapovawasted another chance at 5-4 it gave the next tíe break, which ended with a doubles fault by Sesil Karatantcheva.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a353/Pierce4ever/21Sesil_Karatancheva_5.jpg

Sesil´s interview:It was such a close match and I gave everything, you know Maria is eight seeded and soo I didn´t think I have any chances, but I played my best tennis and played offensive, but Maria had better nerves and I ended everything,bu...(Sesil left with tears in her eyes)

sorry,I can still say I´m happy with how I played, but I´m so sad I still lost and hit the worst Double fault of my whole career so far.It became even worse when Maria and I led 5-0 and the second set and lost 7-5 7-6(0).That was a big choke.

Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan, ranked #18 in the LTT rankings, goes on the good effort as she qualified for the 3rd round of Icelandic open in Reykjavik, defeating Lucie Safarova (#16) in a 57,61,64 victory.
Jeyaseelan survived another three sets match in 1st round as she won 62,57,76(6) against Russian Elena Bovina.Jeyaseelan has really been enjoying herself on court during the past few weeks, on grass especially, as she scored her best results on this surface , defeating two top ten players en route to the semifinals in Birmingham (her best result so far on tour) and scoring a good 7-2 record in the last 3 tournaments she played on grass(Birmingham,Wimbledon and Reykjavik).
Jeyaseelan, recovering for a breathing virus that let her really unhealthy during the holidays, is now taking on Belgian world #1 Kim Clijsters in the round of 16."I beat her in Birmingham, but she was coming off a strong clay court season , including the Roland-Garros title, and she had difficulties to adapt to the grass. She reached the semifinals in Wimbledon and started this tourny by two straight sets wins, so it will obviously be very difficult for me tomorrow. But I feel no pressure at all , I'm the outsider in this match and everything can happen. If she wins, it will be logical because she's the hottest player on tour along with Myskina and Davenport , who both lost in round 2. She's the favourite to win here. And if I win, well , I gues i will begin to seriously believe in lmy chances of cracking the top 10 pretty soon, and it's my goal for this season . Anyway, I hope I play a good match , today was lot better than yesterday , and i hope it will go on like that , better and better day after day ."

Althea (background) training with a friend in one of the Reykjavic court.

Moderator- As happy as yesterday?

A.G- Well, a little less. Yesterday will stay in my mind for a long time. That wasn't expected at all, for me, first.

M- Describe us today's match.

A.G- I feel good, i feel solid. I feel like yesterday's match really helped me in a big way, it just made play like the other girls, it just made be able to compete, to feel among them and not just the new unexperienced player of the LTT.

M- Volleys have been a little...

A.G- Weird. Just weird. You know, the first set, i stayed in my baseline, i just love to stay there and hit, but after winning that first set, i just wanted to take the match as soon as i could, so i felt like i could volley more, come into the net, try to go for it. Just at the end of the tiebreak, i told myself that it was tryin to much and it was oubviously not working that well. That overhit volley that get the ball near her head just scared me. I was like, you won't even kill her to win. laughter.. I just had to be back at what i did the best in the first set because she was playing to take it. Baseline again, basically, and that worked, hopefully.

M- How was the double match, you're facing you're partner in the next single round, did you talk about that in the locker room? Did it affect you team play today?

Not at all. They were just better than us. Of course, i feel like we could have showed more, but we're new, as a team you know, that was so quick from us being a team to us playin the match. I didn't even see that we could face that early, i'm going match by match. I'm mad because obviously, one of us will be totally out after our next match. It is what it is, i'll still try to win, she's a tough player. Wish her the best of luck.

Jelena Jankovic used her powerful backhand to defeat Anastasia Myskina 75 26 75 in the second round of Reykjavic.

Jelena Jankovic of Serbia was able to hit harder and rally longer than her Russian oponent in the second round of the LTT Central Bank of Iceland Challenge. Jankovic knocked second seeded Anastasia Myskina out of the tournament in a 2 hour, 22 minute baseline contest, where Jankovic would prove to be the superior player off the ground. The Serb wacked 51 winners and 49 errors, nearly balancing out, as she moved the fiesty Myskina across the court.

"I think that I played some of my best tennis today. I mean, Anastasia is an excellent player and I am really proud of myself for beating her. I think the next step for me would me to get another win because I usually lose right after I beat a top player. I think I just, I get ahead of myself and think that I am going to win right away in my next match and I put too much pressure on myself. I'm just going to prepare myself well and play calm. So, yeah, I am excited to hopefully get a solid win tomorrow. I like the grass. The faster surfaces definitely suit my game. I'm really hungry to get deep into a tournament. Straight sets would be nice", said a giggling Jankovic following the match.

In doubles, Jankovic and her partner, Ting Li, were destroyed 61 62.

"I suck at doubles. I don't know. I just never win."

Jankovic will square off against fifteenth seeded American Angela Haynes in the Round of 16.

"Angela is a good player. I don't really know much about her but my coach was watching her play her match today so I think I'm ready for her. It's never easy to play a lefty but I'm just going to have a positive attitude about this one."

Venus joins Ana, Martina, and Kim in Final Sixteen
Stevenson Falls Victim to Williams Charge

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41243000/jpg/_41243667_williams3-getty300.jpg

[i]Reykjavic[i/] - Venus Williams continues her surge towards the Number One ranking on the [color]LTT - Ladies Tennis Tour[/b]. In a tough Round of 32 clash, Venus knocked out a fellow African-American, Alexandra Stevenson, 76(4) 67(4) 61 in just over two hours.

The match featured huge serving by both players - Venus hit thirteen aces and two double faults. There were no breaks of serve in the opening two sets, but when the third set came about, unforced errors vanished from Williams' game and winners became consistent.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41259000/jpg/_41259113_williams.jpg

"I think that was a big factor," Venus said. "I decided that 'enough is enough'. I knew I should have won the match in straight sets, but my terrible play brought it to a third. I cleaned up my act, starting hitting through the ball more, and look what it gave me - another win."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41239000/jpg/_41239105_venswil_getty.jpg

Another win is the truth. Since a tiny tournament in Madrid, Venus has gone 13-5 in LTT matches, losing only to the likes of Myskina, Harkleroad, and Ivanovic. Her biggest wins have been over Maria Sharapova, twice during the French Open and Birmingham.

Venus' Round of 16 opponent in Serbain, Ana Ivanovic. The two women met last tournament, in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Venus lost the match in three tough sets, but she says she is more capable of winning now, because of the experience.

"At Wimbledon, it was only my second Grand Slam quarterfinal. I'm much more confident now. My shots are punishing. Ana's movement and power is minute compared to mine. The tide has changed. Venus' orbit is moving," Venus said.

Myskina crashes out in Iceland.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v439/masha_fan/mys.jpg
Anastasia Myskina records her earliest defeat
to date, in her successful LTT career.

"I'm disappointed with myself, of course," were the first words of the 22-year-old Sydney champion, after she suffered a shock defeat to the hands of Serbian teen Jelena Jankovic yesterday. January third in Reykjavic proved the conclusion of the Grass season for the 'Davenport Domination', as well as defeat of seeds Anna Kournikova, Silvia Farina-Elia and Angela Haynes.

"It's tiring, to say the least. I mean, when you are constantly training to win these kind of matches- it's tough for me, you know. I lost to a good player today, but I'm human too. I grow weary [and] fatigued after so long, you know," describes the world number two.

"I think the break was good, but it wasn't long enough for me. I need some more time to assess my game and strategy. I need some more time to rest and focus on some real life issues that need some attention."

The former top player is yet to make a decision on whether she will compete in the American Express Challenge next week in Miami, or whether she will not participate in US hardcourt season altogether.

Safina Sinks in Straight Sets

http://www.dinarasafina.com/photo/fedcup/19_3_2005.jpg
Alas, Safina's focus and poise were not enough, in her 7-5 7-5 defeat against the Swiss Miss

Safina's journey has come to an abrupt end, against a fierce veteran : Martina Hingis.

"I tried my best but, today, my serve let me down in the decisive games of each set. It's very disappointing! (Martina) Hingis just has lots of flair and played the bigger points better than I did."

However, Safina is not ready to give up on her dream to be the #1 player in LTT. Such losses only make her more hungry to become the best !!

"I'm not a quitter that's for sure!! (laughs) I'm still young, unlike (Maggie) Maleeva. I have many years ahead of me to proove my worth. Plus the fact that players like (Anastasia) Myskina can go down so early in a tournament also gives me hope. It shows that everybody has bad days too!"

Ana shuts trash talking Venus Williams up

http://www.ana-ivanovic.net/gallery/albums/hopman06/normal_hopman17.jpg

Venus Williams said Ana Ivanovic's movement and power are minute compared to hers. It certainly was the other way around as Ana Ivanovic spared no mercy in the demolition of the trash talking Venus Williams. In a clearly mismatched competition, Ana came out the victor, winning 6-3, 6-2 easily.

"I have no idea why she has to put down others to make herself look better. I'm not a very good player but I respect my opponents and give credit where it's due. Boasting around without good results to back it up makes you look like a fool."

With this win, Ana has reached all the quarter-finals of LTT except 2 events. However, she is still searching for her first singles title.

"I'm pleased with the way I've handle an intimidating opponent. Hopefully, my mental game has improved and will finally give me my first title."

Injured Venus is brought down to Earth
Ivanovic dominates in 63 62 victory

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39240000/jpg/_39240702_injury_get300x245.jpg
Williams announced that she "lost, practically by default."

Reykjavic - Serving at 70 MPH, all Venus Williams could do was fight. Fight, she did - but, it wasn't enough to advance in the LTT Central Bank of Iceland Challenge in Reykjavic. Venus fell victim to the fourth seed, Ana Ivanovic, 63 62 in under an hour, while battling a severe abdominal strain.

Venus stormed out to a three-love lead in the opening set, when she began feeling "tense and abnormal in the stomach area." While leading after five games, Venus decided to call the trainer, Kerry Brooks, to see if there was anything that could be done to treat her stomach.

"At three-two I was feeling really tight and tense, and then it was cramping terribly. It was an odd feeling. It hurt really bad and from that point forward, I wasn't able to serve anywhere near my best," Venus said. In the Press Conference after the match, tears streamed down Venus' face.

"This obviously isn't the way I wanted to go out this week. I mean, I was the better player before my injury took place. It was obviously witnessed by the crowd and even by Ivanovic. It hurts because I know I should be in the Quarterfinals...not her. It's tough, for sure."

After the two break lead in the first three games of the opening set, it was apparent that Venus would have many troubles holding serve. Her average serve speed for the match was 76 MPH, a career low. Ivanovic, at times, was ripping return winners, not even acknowledging the fact that Venus was injured.

"She showed a severe lack of sportswomanship. She isn't good for the game of tennis. She is a negative role model for young girls around the world, who are looking to confide in tennis," Venus said. She continued to say that Ivanovic was a "disgusting, white turkey" and that "next time, she wouldn't have my injuries to help her win".

Rnd 16: (1)K.Clijsters (BEL) def. S.Jeyseelan (CAN) 2-6 6-3 6-2

Hot day for World Number One Kim Clijsters as she flirted with defeat in the 3rd round. Kim Clijsters walked a thin line before winning. Top Seeded Clijsters recovered from a nightmare start to oust dynamic Canadian Sonya Jeyaeelan in three sets in their third-round clash.

Kim Clijsters was flattened in the opening set by some impressive power hitting and attacking from the Canadian, who upset Clijsters a month ago in Birmingham.

The Canadian, making her debut in the top 20 after Wimbledon, left her top-seeded opponent stunned by racing through the opening set 6-2 in just 27 minutes on the Grandstand court at Reykjavic; Iceland.

"I was never thinking of losing. It’s obvious that I knew the score, but above all I wanted to concentrate on playing point by point. Sonya really started the match strong, it was unbelievable. I just hung in there."

But Belgian fighter Clijsters dug deep in the second set to level the match.
Clijsters failed once to serve out the set but she broke Jeyaseelan again before clinching the set 6-3 force a decider.

In the final set, Kim Clijsters took early control, breaking twice to lead 4-0.
She conceded one of those breaks but held to love when serving for the match at 6-2 to survive and reach yet another Q/F .

To the Belgian press she said : "I wasn’t playing my best tennis, that’s a fact I have to admit. I had a lot of difficulties to find my rhythm due to the wind. I had trouble with my serve and I made way too many unforced errors in the first set."

"As the match went on longer, I started to feel better and I gained alot more confidence in myself."

Clijsters win now sets up a Quarterfinal clash against newcomer Althea Gibson of U.S.A, who beat campatriout Jennifer Capriati 6-7 6-0 6-3.

"The positive thing is that I never lost confidence. I have fought for every ball and I ended up winning. I am very happy about that. That’s sometimes more satisfying than winning 6-0, 6-0." said Clijsters

In the Women's Doubles Round 16; Angela Haynes and Kim Clijsters upset Wimbledon Champions Dubois/Farina-Elia in 2 easy straight forward sets.

LTT Directors officially present Kim Clijsters of Belgium with the LTT Number One Ranking for the first time in her short career.

"It was a great moment for me. Very emotional and such a great feeling. Hopefully I can keep winning nd keep hold of that top spot for a long time now."

Sonya Jeyaseelan lost in the round of 16 against world n°1 Kim Clijsters of Belgium in a three setter , 26 63 62. Jeyaseelan, still recovering from illness, burst into tears after she lost the second set...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/01ttsj1.jpg

An interview with Sonya Jeyaseelan

MODERATOR: Questions please!!!

Q: Hi SOnya ! So , what happened today ?

A: pff...Exhaustion, you know... I mean, I tried to start strong because I knew my only chance was to take the lead . But Kim is number 1 you know , and it's hard to follow her rhythm . After the first set, I really went off the match, I was totally out of control . I felt really tired. I still haven't recovered entirely , and today was the "too much" match.

Q: You had such a nice start...

A: No, really , she made a lot of mistakes , I played ok , but I was not at my best , definitely. I was ok , I guess , but she put the boost out of her right from the 1st point of 2nd set , and then , I was unable to do anything with the ball,I was feeling very frustrated...

Q: You beat her one month ago in Birmingham on the same surface , i guess she improved her play on grass...

A: Not really. She was coming off a good clay season where she played a lot of good matches, she felt tired I guess and now , she's just on again...

Q: Now , what are you expecting for the near future ?

A: Actually I'm kinda relieved to have lost, I really need to relax and to cure myself. I think I'm going to Miami only on Sunday , and then I'll start training for the hardcourts season. I don't expect too much.I know I have the game , but I have to be healthy above all. Today was the perfect demonstration of that : I played ok but was exhausted so I had no chance to win .

Q: What happened after set 2 ? You burst into tears ...

A: Haven't you understood yet I 'm feeling completely off form ? I mean, come on , it's hard to see you have the game , and that your body , your health , lets you down.

Q: Did you think about retiring from the match at this point ?

A: mmm... kinda, but not for long. I don't want to lose that way , so I tried to finish the match , and then it went 4/0 in like 10 minutes , it was hard...She was great , I have to give her all the credit for this one...

Q: thanks Sonya , and goo dluck in hardcourts. Rest well and come back stronger...

A: I'll try , I'm doing my best.

Player Party after Clijsters Presentation

http://www.manmademultimedia.com/magazine/news/sport/tennis/2005/Pacific_Life_Open_3-22-05/clijsterswinner2.jpg
As defending Champion, Davenport helped with the on court presentation after Clijsters' Round of 16 win. Kim is only the second player on the LTT records this season to hold the number 1 ranking.

On court earlier today, after Clijsters' 2-6 6-3 6-2 victory over Sonya Jeyseelan, the LTT tournament directors presented Kim Clijsters with the world number 1 trophy. The trohpy was presented to Martina Hingis earlier in the year after winning the first tournament of the season, and only left the swiss miss' hands after Clijsters finished runner-up at Wimbledon to take the number 1 crown away.

Many of the LTT players joined on court to congratulate the Grand Slam Belgain Clijsters on her achomplishment. Afterwards was a players party dedicated to the world number 1.

Many of the players gave interviews during the press party on their tennis and Clijsters ranking.

Newscomer Althea Gibson Impresses.
Althea Gibson from U.S.A reaches the quarterfinal in her first LTT tournament played beating campatriot & double partner Jennifer Capriati 6-7 6-0 6-3.

M- It feels good, doesn't it?

A.G- Oh yeah. thats a really really great start for me. I think i play better than ever, i'm just feeling comfortable on the court.

M- The first set has been really entertaining to watch.

A.G- Really? I'm glad. I love it when both player are playing really good at the same time, when they're both fighting hard, that first set was a total illustration of that. So many winners, some crazy shots, big rallies. Yet the rest of the match hasn't been played at that level.

M- That was my next question.

A.G- Well, i don't know. i think we both played better in the first set. even if i lost that one. The second set.mmm....i don't know, she kinda let herself go, maybe a physical thing, i hope not. i think the rest of the match has been pretty weird, but i was still a lil more in the match than her. I just don't feel that i won the 2nd and third set that easily because i played that good. Not at all.

M- Maybe you were both realizing that it was a compatriot and double partner standing in front of you?

A.G- No, i don't think. No. Actually, we just don't know eachother, i mean, i could not have been necause we didn't want to play a friend or something like that...we just play one match in double, and didn't really talk.

M- Next is number one player Kim Clijsters...

A.G- Hopefully, i can take her some games.

M- I thought it would be more about taking a set.

A.G- I'll see, she had so many great results, she has a slam...i don't know. The biggest job for me is not to think about her achievements, in order not to feel like i'm the little pink house tryin to kick the Empire State.

M- There were a lot of things you weren't supposed to do.

A.G- True, i don't lose faith, i promise myself to try. I'll do my best.
