http://www.ana-ivanovic.net/gallery/albums/Wimbledon05/normal_lsIIIrd02.jpg
Ana Ivanovic beat Flavia Pennetta of Italy in straight sets to advance to the round of 16 in Birmingham. It was a straightforward match as Ana didn't have too much difficulty in handling Flavia.
"I've played her before a couple of times and I know her game well. She's definitely improving and slowly will catch up with me. I've just gotta keep on working and improve various aspects of my overall game."
Next up for Ana is dangerous floater, Iveta Benesova.
"Iveta is a wonderful player and very tough to beat. She won her first round match very easily and I hope I can beat her."
*Jool* Dec 6th, 2005, 11:35 AM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/jeyaseelan1.jpg
Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada won her very first match on grass against Ksenia Palkina of Kirgizhistan. Jeyaseelan suffered the loss of the first set (7/5) but her reaction was worth it as she took the other 2 sets , 6/4 and 6/2, to reach 2nd round in Birmingham and meet second-seeded Kim Clijsters.
Jeyaseelan's reaction : "I'm glad to be in 2nd round, I like grass , and I'm honoured to have received a wild-card to play in this event.I'd like to thank the organizers a lot for their confidence.I hope I can push Kim in a good fight in round 2 but I guess it will be really hard for me as she smacks the ball so strong ! But hopefully I can cause a huge upset and finally begin to climb a little in the rankings..."

Anna Kournikova def. Jelena Dokic 7-5 7-5
It has been a long journey, but Anna Kournikova is at last through the second roundl, after defeating Serbian/Australian Jelena Dokic 7-5 7-5 in the first round of the Ordina Open. It was Anna's first win in weeks...
The 24-year-old was one of the top players at the begining of the season, but has at times struggled to regain the consistency and the desire to win that saw her achieve her past glory.
Currently ranked No.6, the stunning russian is confident that her best tennis remains ahead of her and claims she will try to work harder during the up-coming hardcourt season.
"I'm quite happy with this win. I wasn't 100% but at least I came through it." said the star of the tour "I'm having problems with my confidence, wich turns into problems closing matches"
Kournikova will confront American Lindsay Davenport in the next round.
"In other circumstances a player like Davenpork would be a piece of cake, but right now anything can happen, so I'll keep my mouth shut"
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/550/1akoupic500.jpg

"Anna looks nice in a skirt, but that backhand of hers could use some work"
In her post match interview, Lindsay Davenport showed her full motivated personality about taking on Russain sixth seed Anna Kournikova in the Round of 16. In the singles event this week, Davenport had a minro comfortable win against Belgain Henin-Hardenne winning 6-4 7-6(5), however the next round should be tougher but Davenport wants it over and done with even quicker than her previous match.
"The match against Justiene was tough, but i always felt like i was going to win. Tomorrow against Anna i know i can win. Everything is up to me. I will either win the match or lose the match, all she has to do is just show up and stand still. I know that when i am on my game only a few people can come close to beating me."
Davenport slammed back at Kournikova's post match statement earlier today. When responding to Anna's "in other circumstances she would be a piece of cake" quote, Davenport said "that girl can talk the talk but i dont she can walk the walk. Maybe she is fit to walk a cat-walk, but not a tennis court. Lets just wait and see what happens tomorrow, but the main thing is that i feel confident going into the match".
Chevina Dec 6th, 2005, 09:50 PM Myskina begins with first win on Grass.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41242000/jpg/_41242199_myskina1-getty200.jpg
Third seed Anastasia Myskina began her Grass-
court season in winning fashion, eliminating
Lucie Safarova in straight sets.
FROM BIRMINGHAM - After reaching two consecutive singles semifinals, Russian Anastasia Myskina backed up her clay-court success, following a straight sets win over Czech Lucie Safarova in her opening match on British Grass.
The Russian never looked in doubt against the Czech youngster, destroying the world number thirteen shortly over an hour. Myskina, who fell on her left ankle in during a match in Berlin last week, still required treatment during her encounter with Safarova.
Despite being one of the two players who have achieved the top spots in both the LTT singles and doubles, Myskina has her eyes on even greater achievements. Leaning into the "tournament of the year", (that being Wimbledon, of course) Myskina comments "I have always wanted to win Wimbledon. That has been my greatest desire in tennis. I mean, I believe I can do it. I just have to put my game in action."
The Sydney International winner will meet fellow Russian Anastassia Rodionova in the second round- a first time meeting for the close friends. "Yeah, it should be a great match. Anastassia is very under-rated, you know. Hopefully I can play similar to today's standard, and fingers-crossed that I don't aggravate my ankle."

Just ranking in the top 20, Dementieva will play against Monica Seles the next round. Elena has beaten the top players Kim Clijsters, Lucie Safarova, Venus Williams, and now Silvia Farina-Elia.

Geisha Dec 7th, 2005, 02:15 PM Elder Williams takes down Sharapova
Haynes is other victim
http://media.collegepublisher.com/media/paper410/stills/7332kfab.jpg
The skies were grey, the atmosphere was humble, the matches were glooming - Venus Williams was the one thing that could not shine any brighter as she advanced the the Quarterfinals of LTT's Virgin International in Birmingham, England. Venus defeated Angela Haynes 67(6) 63 61 and Maria Sharapova 64 67(3) 75 in the R32s and R16s, respectively.
"I am just so elated, right now. These past few weeks on the LTT have been simply unforgettable. It has been a great experience to play the world's best players and to beat them," Venus said emphatically, as she spoke with Mary Joe Fernandez after the match.
The emotions were evident after her R16 match against Sharapova. Venus buried her face into her towel and cried, laughed, and jumped to greater heights. "I'm very emotional, right now. When I began, I talked a lot of talk because I knew I had talent, but people didn't think I did. They said I wasn't as good as the other girls."
This was true. Venus began her campaign on the LTT with a wretched 1-5 record, losing matches 26 16 and 36 26 to unknown players. When she was not invited to play a top Tier event during the claycourt season, Venus said she had enough of losing.
"Well, I was only invited to play the smaller tournament at the Memorial Cup. I knew I was better than most of the girls there and it was too bad that I could not play the bigger event. But, it turned out to be good for me as I got some match wins under my belt," Venus stated.
This was good thing, for sure. Including the Memorial Cup, Venus has reached the Quarterfinals in three of her last four tournaments and has compiled a great 8-3 record. She has defeated Top Ten players, including Maria Sharapova (at the French Open and Virgin International) and Lucie Safarova.
"It is obvious that I will be very tough to beat with the way I am playing. I am finding the angles and corners of the court, without effort. When I realize I am playing a tough player, you willl be able to see my true talent. It was unevident in my matches this week because Haynes and Sharapova aren't as good as me."

Jeyaseelan waves to the crowd after her astonishing upset of second seed Kim Clijsters
Canadian wild-card Sonya Jeyaseelan scored her best ever win in the Ladies Tennis Tour on Wednesday , upsetting in a great match French open champion Kim Clijsters, ranked as high as n° 2 in the world, in three sets of 64 46 63. Jeyaseelan moved to her first ever quarter-finals , where she will meet Monica Seles of the United States for a spot in the semi-finals.
"I am astonished, I knew I was playing better on grass but this is really impressive, a big surprise, I'm very proud today! *giggles* It proves that small players can still beat hard hitters like Kim . It was a tough match , she's very fit and fast , so I had to try to hit the shot that hurts very quickly .On grass you have to keep focused every second cause everything goes so fast ! I served well , and gained a lot of points at the net. It's a great win for me , and it already is my best showing at a tournament, now I take every thing as a bonus ,I think tomorrow match against Monica will be as tough as this one, but I can't wait to enter the court and show what I'm able to do, and of course , enjoy myself , which is the most important ."

Russian Anastasia Myskina overpowered her fellow Russian
opponent, Anastassia Rodionova last night.
FROM BIRMINGHAM - As fellow seeds Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova bowed out on a day riddled with upsets, third seed Anastasia Myskina remains the highest seed left in the draw- a fate which we've seen several times already this season.
The former world number one abolished Anastassia Rodionova, who is also of Russian origin, in straight sets 6:3, 6:3, in the late stages of the day which brimmed with suprises.
22-year-old Myskina began the match with vigour- pumping Rodionova of her stamina and outrunning the artistic Russian. As the match progressed, it became more evident that Myskina was certainly in blistering form.
In just over an hour, Myskina emerged victorious.
"I played really well today. I wasn't entirely confident coming into this match, you know," spoke the world number one doubles player.
Myskina also showed consideration for her compatriot.
"Nastya is a good player, so I didn't expect it to be this easy. She's a close friend of mine, you know, we have a lot in common."
Myskina will now face American powerhouse Venus Williams in the quarterfinals, who upset sixth seed Maria Sharapova.
In reply to Williams's remarks, Myskina comments unfazed "She's right, you know. I think she'll be very tough to beat, for sure. But that doesn't mean I don't think I'm capable of doing so. You know, hopefully I'm able to play my best tennis tomorrow and come out the winner."

Jeyaseelan, ranked 30 in LTT rankings, started the season with a lot of difficulties , because her coach , *Jool*, could not follow her on the tour, he could just meet her during the week-ends and talk a little about tactics. But *Jool* followed his player this week in Birmingham , and Sonya seems to enjoy his presence. "Of course it's better to have one's coach with you when you travel. I went to the other events with Li Na and her coach but nobody was really pushing me and comforting me in the stands, I feel much more confident this week , and grass is a surface I appreciate. My coach told me he was really proud of my results this week and he will try to be at my disposal on a more regular basis. I 'm elated with my semi final and I hope the dream will go on , but I can't say, I'm not used to play top players so often, I think Lindsay is a great player , and she will be overmotivated to win the tournament , but as a dark horse , I think I can go on surprising many people ..."

World number three, Anastasia Myskina is now into her sixth career
semifinal, following victories over Lucie Safarova, Anastassia Rodionova
and Venus Williams this week.
FROM BIRMINGHAM - Anastasia Myskina is now a real threat for the title in Birmingham this week. The Russian breezed past the mighty Venus Williams 6:3, 6;2 in the Quarterfinal event on Grass.
Myskina proved to outlast the power and accuracy of the American, dropping just five games in their relatively brief encounter.
She now advances to her fourth consecutive semifinal, following those achievements in Berlin, Paris and Rome respectively.
The Sydney International winner will face eighth seed Tatiana Golovin, who has beaten her on several occasions this year.
"I was hoping I would have to play Jelena (Jankovic), because I really don't like playing Tatiana (Golovin). I remember I lost my lead against her both times, but this time I'm not going to let it happen yet again. We've only played our matches on clay, so maybe it will be different this time. I take that as something positive, and you know, hopefully, I can get a spot in the final."
Indeed, the former world number one has lost her previous semifinals in the last two weeks, however Myskina optimistically explains things will be different tomorrow.
"I think this one of my best chances to win another title, you know. Last week, I was a little bit disappointed that I couldn't go further in the tournament, to close the gap between Kim and I in the rankings. So you know, I hope this time I can finally pull it off!"
She then adds "I couldn't ask for anything more than I already have. I'm so grateful to make it this far in these past couple of tournaments. I won't loose sight of that."

Chevina Dec 9th, 2005, 10:06 AM Myskina advances to the Birmingham singles final.
http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/myskina_backhand_7482_rx.jpg
Anastasia Myskina continues her staggering
form, ensuring herself a finals birth in
Birmingham today.
FROM BIRMINGHAM - Third seed Anastasia Myskina produced the winning goods to finally overcome her nemesis on the tour, Tatiana Golovin, in straight sets on the Birmingham grass courts this morning. The Russian cruised past her French Open conquerer 6:3, 6:2, to set up a mouthwatering final clash with Lindsay Davenport, who prevailed over darkhouse Sonya Jeyaseelan in three sets.
Myskina, the 22-year-old Muscovite, is yet to drop a set at the Tier 2 event in England, following victories over Lucie Safarova, Anastassia Rodionova and Venus Williams already this week.
Unlike in the Rome final and the French Open semifinal, Myskina, today, maintained a remarkable sense of spontaneity and satisfaction, instead of commonly looking pressured and compelled to be competing in the late stages of a tournament.
The Russian made a late charge in winning the first set, breaking Golovin's serve twice, en route to capturing the remaining three games of the set. The second provided several errors from Golovin, as she was immediately broken in the first game, after thumping a wild forehand into the net at 15-30. The Frenchwoman regained her dignity in the latter stages of the set, when she struck various winners of both her forehand and backhand strokes. However, this remained somewhat insufficient to overcome a hot and fiery Russian, who was now courteously tearing the Italian International champion's game apart. It was not long before the former world number one was back into another final.
"I wanted to keep the rallies short, because it's difficult for me to hit her groundstrokes," spoke the consistent Russian, who is now into her third final since joining the LTT tour earlier this year. "I'm happy that I was able to use the surface to my advantage, and get the ball behind her, therefore making it easy to come in for the winning shot."
Lindsay Davenport will be Myskina's final opposition this week, as the American recovered from a set down to end the magical run for Canadian wildcard Sonya Jeyaseelan.
"It's a big match that I'm very much looking forward to. Lindsay's is a big hitter, and she's been playing great this week. Good luck to her,"
Indeed, Myskina remains optimistic for her chances.
"It's overwhelming to be in the final this week. I'm really impressed with how I've adjusted to the grass so quickly, you know, I was expecting to head into Wimbledon with little experience on this surface. But now I love it, it's great. I really think I can win tomorrow."

Davenport celebrates after winning the last point with a trademark backhand winner
Lindsay Davenport moved into the final of the Tier 2 event in Birmingham earlier today after a touch 4-6 6-4 6-4 win in suprisngly record heat. The British city is not known for its sun, but today it seemed as though they were "down-under" as Davenport managed to over-power the unexpected semi-finalst in three sets.
"It was great to see Jeyaseelyn make the semi-finals this week. She i such as good player and i know that it wont be long before she makes that one more step. But for now, my personal thoughts are all on this next match. Its my first final in a while on the tour and i really want to join the elite players, that is win the Grand Slams, and i think that winning here would be perfect preparation for it. I know it is going to be tough though, as Myskina has won all her matches in striaght sets against some top-class players."
http://language.chinadaily.com.cn/minibio/2004/07/davenport.jpg
The cap was on during sets 1 and 2, as the sun was scorhing, however Davenport told the press after that she didnt mind the sun, as it made the ball travel faster through the air
Under the sun in 1 hour and 59 minutes, Davenport used her pace and power to hit winners that could only be dreamt of getting anywhere near too. But things didnt always go the elder Americans way, as her opponent angled and used her great topspin shots to knock Davenport off balance in the first set, before Davenport found her groove and settled into the match.

Davenport and Hinigs, the number 2 seeded pair in the world are also going into the doubles final tomorrow, as they took down Dementieva/Smashnova 6-4 1-6 7-5. The pair remain on course for regaining the number 1 doubles ranking and yet another final. It is there 8th time out of 9 events that the talented duo have reached the semi-final stage or further. "Its great to play with Martina, she knows that game so well so it really is a privilige."
"Tomorrow is going to be tough. Myskina is such a good player so it would be great for me to get the win. I know that if i can just play my game and stick to my own shots then i should win, thats what i have always told myself. I want to wish Myskina the best of look tomorrow. Im going in with confidence and sticking to my gameplan."

I would be somewhat suprised if her heart isn't broken by now! What will it take for this woman to win a second title? She makes it so far, so easily, then just loses the plot. I'd rather see her get steam-rolled. Oh well, I guess I should just face it. I'm just not the best player every week! Lindsay, you deserved the title. See you all at Wimbledon!

Thanks, but what I really want more than anything is that top spot back (call me greedy if you like). I would be more than happy to help out, and make this "season record" as an accessory to the game?

Losing the matches in a tight THIRD SET, obviously tells you, that the numbers that you are using for your last 2-3 games are a little too low. You end up losing by 2-4 points in a TB as your last number is normally 1 or 2.
Maria Sharapova is also learning from that. :)
Please EVERYONE - Don't use 1-2-3 in your last 3 games out of the 13 possible. :)

Chevina Dec 10th, 2005, 04:17 AM Myskina loses final thriller.
http://eur.news1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/ap_photo/20050627/all/l1473231.jpg
Third seed Anastasia Myskina reacts after going down a break in the final set tiebreak. The Russian's
trend for losing tight matches is now becoming a concern for the former world number one and
her coach.
FROM BIRMINGHAM - Anastasia Myskina may have held a perfect record heading into today's final, however her fierce American opposition, Lindsay Davenport, was simply too strong for the Russian today. The 22-year-old Muscovite was beaten 6:4, 6:7, 7:6 by the power and force of the world number fourteen.
Other than Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport was the lowest ranked player to challenge Myskina this week.
"Lindsay's a great player, and I congratulate her on her win."
"I tried everything I could today," commented the perplexed Russian. "I thought, for a moment there, I might have just done it. But when I served for the match, there just wasn't anything I could do. She was too good."
Appearing downcast and cheerless, Myskina's face suddenly brightens on the prospect of Wimbledon next week.
"I'm so excited for that. It couldn't come sooner for me, you know," she smiles enthusiastically.
"Next week, doubles is a priority over singles. Daniela is such a pleasure to partner with every week, and we are hoping for even more Grand Slam success. I think I have to concentrate on that, more so than just my singles career."
AlexSydney Dec 10th, 2005, 04:54 AM NOOOOOOOOOOOO!! :bigcry: We lost the doubles final!
