Berlin, GER - All hence on deck! Iva Majoli has arrived on the Ladies Tennis Tour. The Croatian blonde enrolled herself last week in LTT, but had to spend the week at the Roland Garros venue due to non-existing other events. Maybe flying over to Germany and start training there would have been an option?
Majoli: "Are you kidding me? And miss all those great shopping venues at Paris? No, despite of having no chances to practice, I chose to stay at the French capital. And besides, the matches Kim delivered the crowd were absolutely amazing to look at. So yeah, I'll be trying to get some rythm before playing my first round match."
And that first round match will be against Silvia Farina Elia. The Italian reached the headlines after dismissing Martina Hingis at the quarters of the French Open.
Majoli: "Apparently that was quite a shocker in LTT. I was in the stands during that match and I was asking myself if they hadn't missed when putting the 1 before Hingis' name, but I guess they didn't. Anyway, if Silvia can defeat the world number one, who am I to challenge her...? Just kidding, she's going down!"

TomTennis Nov 28th, 2005, 04:50 PM Davenport Marches On
http://www.tennis.info/images/BL4/Sun/Davenport2142.jpg
Lindsay Davenport, better known as "Davencow" in the locker room, powered past young French woman Amelie Mauresmo to move into the second round of the Berlin Open. The event is hosting the top players in the world, and is the last event on clay before moving over to the lushes grass.
Davenport, now ranked a career low at 14, is not predicted to do very well this week, however she seems to think differently. " You know, people can think what they like. I feel comfortable with my game. The last few weeks i have just come up against better players and it has been especially hard with it being on clay. Im really looking forward to my next match and have high expectations of this week in singles and doubles."
http://www.tennis.info/images/BL4/Sun/DavenportMauresmo2133.jpg
This comes after the dynamic duo of Davenport and Hingis lost the top ranking in doubles to Anastasia Myskina. Davenport and Hingis were going for their seventh conseuctive doubles semi-final in as many weeks. The pair had never failed to reach that stage in a tournament, yet at the French both fell short in the quater-finals. They are obviously hoping for better results this week.
Well of course we are. We are the number 1's so we need to get back their to show everyone we truly are the best.
When asked about the other girls on the tour, and who she felt her best rivalries and matches have been with she was quick to reply. Even quicker to the ones she doesnt get on with. Well obvioulsy Hingis is one of my greatest friends on the tour. We practice together all the time so its fun travelling with her. Clijsters is also a nice person to be around, yet the last few times we have played i havnt been able to put her away. I am way more powerful than she is, and i can strike the ball alot cleaner and hit more winners, but im just not as consitent off the ground. I cant wait for the next time we play. I know its going to be a blast.
http://peninsulaclarion.com/images/041204/davenport.jpg
Other results in round 1 came as a shock. Davenport advanced over Mauresmo 6-4 6-3, however ninth seeded Anna Rodinova fell to Jelena Dokic in a close but ugly match. Other seeds that fell were Haynes and Saforova. Saforova was beaten by Serena Williams. Its great to see Serena winning, its about time i guess, although im probably not the one to talk."
The Second Round is set, and with the draw falling into place, the top seeds take to the court. Key matches tomorrow will most definetly be Graf vs 10th seeded Monica Seles, and Mary Pierce vs the French Open champion Kim Clijsters.

Geisha Nov 28th, 2005, 08:44 PM Venus Powers Into Second Round
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/505/21239283240venus.jpg
BERLIN - Sixteenth seed, Venus Williams, powered into the Second Round of the LTT BMW Women's International earlier today. The powerful American dominated her opponent, Russian powerhouse, Svetlan Kuznetsova, in straight sets, 64 61. The match featured many unforced errors from both players and off both sides, but Venus was able to clean her game up in the second set.
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/505/21239283240venus.jpg
"I thought it was a low-quality match. I mean, I'm riding on a lot of momentum and confidence after Paris, and I now have a seeding, so this match shouldn't have been much of a problem for me. Unfortunately, it was and I'll need to practice much harder if I want to do anything major this week," Venus said. She seemed angry with herself throughout the match, something that has surprised many people.
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/505/21239283168venus.jpg
In total, Venus hit 22 winners to 35 unforced errors - high numbers for a player who won in less than 90 minutes. "Obviously, I am happy to be in the next round and in the fashion that I won in. It was a convincing victory, although I played some terrible tennis. I'll have to improve for tomorrow, because my next opponent won't take any of this bullshit."
UDACHi Nov 28th, 2005, 08:45 PM http://cache.wtnphotos.com/655/21238790697jankovic.jpg
Jelena Jankovic celebrates as she knocks off a forehand winner to defeat Sesil Karatantcheva 57 62 75.
Jelena Jankovic was once a player who defeated Martina Hingis. A top twenty player, the Serb appeared to be on her way straight to the top. Unfortunately for Jankovic, she has only won 4 matches on the LTT Tour. The last time Jankovic had won a match before Berlin was when Dinara Safina pulled out of their first round match at the Australian Open, suffering from severe heat illness.
Arriving on court in Berlin, Jankovic gave the crowd her best impression of a smile and drudged onto the court. A player with low confidence, Jankovic had a silent determination about her. Jankovic opened the match with a blistering cross court backhand winner. Her younger Bulgarian opponent immediately felt the pressure.
Jankovic lost the first set 75 but won the next 62. In the third, the Serb lost her serve twice while up 52, but was able to calm down and capture the 2 hour and 24 minute match, 57 62 75.
"I am so relieved. This takes a great deal of pressure off heading into the grass season. I did not want to go winless on the clay."
Karatantcheva was clearly struggling with her mind and sprayed 62 unforced errors, with 7 double faults to match it. Jankovic was waiting for the Bulgarian to destruct most of the time, and it usually payed off. In the end, Jankovic clenched her fists and cried "Yes!" as she crushed a forehand passing shot to win her first singles match since the Australian Open.
Alberto Nov 28th, 2005, 09:00 PM Cristina won her 1st match!!! :worship: next one...1st seed Martina Hingis :o

Castano def. Safina 6-2 6-2
'It was tough to play Dinara because she used to be my doubles partner. But she has been going through some coaching issues and that might have affected her today. She played pretty well [pause] I think that the match was closer than the scoreline indicated. I was happy with my play today and i'm really focused for my next match against Iveta. I don't want to fall out of the top 20 so I need to do well here.'

~JHH Wins In Straight Sets~
http://www.justine-henin.net/images/berlin03_24.jpg
Justine pumps her fist as she takes the set. JHH def. Mirza 6-2, 6-2.
Justine Henin-Hardenne reaches the Round Of 32 at Berlin today. It only took 56 minutes, and JHH looked very conformtable on the Clay. Justine Henin-Hardenne def. Sania Mirza 6-2, 6-2. JHH was one spot away from being seeded and into the Top 16, but missed it by little points. This week, she will be looking to capture those points that she needs and break the Top 16.
"I feel very good about my game, I think getting to the Quarters of the French Open last week really helped me. My confidence is starting to become higher and higher. Also breaking the Top 20, is a great achievement, I am just so happy."
Last week she did well, losing in the Quarter-Finals to eventual Champion, Kim Clijsters. JHH wants to continue the Belgian winning streak on Clay, and win another title for her home conutry. She did so today, as she played great tennis and really set up her shots easily. She next faces Shiavone who upset 13 seeded Haynes. Good luck JHH!

TF Chipmunk Nov 29th, 2005, 01:51 AM Anna-Lena's Struggles Continue
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/659/21237609508groenefeld.jpg
Anna-Lena was pushed around by American Alexandra Stevenson in their Round of 64 match today.
Berlin, Germany - Anna-Lena Groenefeld's struggles continued today with a 7-6(5) 7-5 loss to Alexandra Stevenson. This was yet another first round loss for the young German up-and-comer.
With tears and screeches filling the stadium, it was evident that the German was having some troubles. All throughout this season, she has struggled tournament after tournament. After a promising start in doubles, even that has proven to be troubling for her as well.
"I just don't know what's wrong," said a teary Groenefeld after her singles match. "Everything is going downhill."
Struggling to find a groove of any sort, she has resorted to just going for her shots every match. However, without a clear-cut strategy, many have said that she is playing with a losing formula. "I think it's time I switched my game plan," she said. "My coach and I will have to start working on a better strategy on court."
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/659/21237609528groenefeld.jpg
Even through all the hardships that the season has brought to her, Anna-Lena has vowed to continue fighting.
"I'm not a quitter. I just won't let something bog me down," she said. "Maybe it's a lost cause, but I am not going to bow down to these players any time soon."
Though she has strong words for the rest of the tour, she will have to start proving the world of her talent and willpower, one groundstroke at a time.

7th seed Silvia Farina Elia has yet to taste defeat in the Berlin Open after advancing to the third round of the singles and 2nd round of the doubles. So far, Farina Elia has defeated Iva Majoli and Misa Krajicek in straight sets to set up a clash with Jelena Dokic and a possible quarter final clash with top seed Martina Hingis again. While, in doubles Farina Elia and Stephanie Dubois claimed a rare win after victory over Iveta Benesova and Vera Zvonareva in a really tough match 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 6-4 and now face 5th seed Russians Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova.
Silvia said in her press conference 'I am really hopw with my singles lately! To win both my matches so far in straight sets is really good. I think I have a real chance of winning against Jelena and make the quarters again. It also nice to win in doubles because Steph and I just cant seem to get it together yet but hoepfully we can by Wimbledon'

(2)Clijsters def. Pierce 5-7 6-2 6-0
Kim Clijsters rallied from a loss in the first set to beat unseeded French Woman, Mary Pierce 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 in the secound round of the BMW Women's International early Tuesday morning.
"Mary played so well in the first set -- she didn't make any mistakes," Clijsters said. "I just had to fight back and I got better."
The 22-year-old Clijsters, ranked No. 2, used powerful groundstrokes on the slow clay court in the second and third sets to keep Pierce on the defensive and reaching another Rnd 16.
Pierce capitalized on 12 unforced errors by Clijsters to win the first set 7-5, despite leading a slow starting French Open Champion 5-2.
"I just wasn't ready, I still feel a bit lucky to pull through that match. Mary was playing really well."
In the second and third set, the World Number Two, showed why she is the current FO Champion, by dismissing Pierce 6-2 6-0 with ease in 51 minutes. The Belgian wasted no time after losing the first set, stepping p to reach the Rnd 16; where she faces Russian Elena Dementieva who surprising upset 16th seeded Venus Williams.
"I was very happy with my final two sets, I really played smart, consistent tennis and wore Mary down. I really mixed up my game with some variety, alot Serve & Volleying"
Clijsters/Haynes also moved into the Rnd 16 of the Doubles after defeating Mauresmo/Torrens-Valero 6-4 7-5.

Berlin, Germany.
Eight seeded, Princess Sharapova finished off her second round opponent, Meghann Shaughnessy, 6-4, 7-5, setting up a third round match against compatriot, Anna Chakvetadze who edge out Serena the King Kong in straight sets 6-1 6-2. In both sets, Sharapova had a 5-2 lead before letting her opponent into the match.
"First of all, Princess doesn't like clay. Princess wants grass season to start soon because that's where the Princess rules the tour. Princess was slightly distracted while leading both sets. Even if the Princess didn't play a great match today, Princess is happy that Princess is able to win two matches in a row. Something that Princess hasn't done in weeks."
Sharapova, who has only won one match in the past two weeks, is in fine form here and says that she shouldn't be overlooked. Even if she can appear bored at times off court, Sharapova remains a driven competitor.
"The Princess never thought she needed to prove anything to anyone. If people underestimate the Princess just because of the fluke result in the past two weeks, then they'll be surprised. "
"It's a pity that both Porni and Tati have lost today."

http://www.patty-schnyder.com/rome057.jpghttp://www2.raisport.rai.it/news/sport/tennis/199905/28/374eb6ff034b8/hingis.jpg
Patty Schnyder has advanced today to the Round of 16 at the LTT BMW Women's International. Defeating Shahar Peer 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), Patty has lit fire recently, reaching the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and now the Round of 16 here.
"Yeah, I have really tried to work on the mental part of my game a lot more lately. I think it showed at the French Open. I lost the first set to Jelena Jankovic 6-0, but I fought back and won the next two sets easily. In the past, I might have given up but I have really found new strength that has urged me to fight. Also, in the Round of 16 at Roland Garros, I played a very tough match with the great Monica Seles, eventually winning it in a tiebreaker for the third."
Patty will next take on her fellow Swiss and world number one, Martina Hingis. Patty won't be considered the favorite in this match by any means but maybe that helps her a little bit. Hingis easily disposed of her opponent earlier today.
"I've wanted this match for a while now. In Canberra, I should have played her in the second round, but she was beaten by Nicole Vaidisova. I think we will have a great match tomorrow because we will both be fighting for different things. She will obviously want to prove that she is Switzerland's best. I will want to prove that I can make a match with top players. In the past couple of tournaments, it has taken a really good player to beat me. I'm really proud of that."
In doubles, Patty and Ksenia Palkina scored their first win in a while. It came in three sets over Nicole Vaidisova and Elena Dementieva. Ksenia Palkina is also still alive in the singles along with Patty's good friends, Iveta Benesova, Slivia Farina Elia, Anastasia Myskina, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Jelena Jankovic, and Kim Clijsters. Patty and Ksenia will hope for good fortunes in their next match with sixth seeded Harkleroad/Rubin.
"It's about time we won another doubles match. We have fallen out of the top eight in the race so we have both been working really hard lately, trying to get back there. Let's hope it can pay off here! I'm thrilled with my ranking. I'm finally seeded and I think I deserve it. I have been a fairly consistent performer, and I have had some nice wins. But none would be as tasty as if I won my match tomorrow.
:bigclap: Good luck Patty :bigclap:

After reaching the final four at Roland
Garros last week, 22-year-old Myskina
continues her clay-court brilliance.
FROM BERLIN - World number three Anastasia Myskina had no trouble advancing to the second round in the Tier IB event in Germany overnight. The Russian disposed of Czech teenager Nicole Vaidisova in straight sets 6:1, 6:1 to set up a clash with American Alexandra Stevenson. The newly-crowned doubles world number one also teams up with Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova tomorrow, following their French Open victory last week.
"I think I've been playing really well lately. My results have improved gradually as I've gotten more confident on the court. I never underestimate a good player, so I mean I had no expectations heading into my match today. Nicole is a good, solid player. I think the match was actually closer than the scoreline indicated. You know, I'm much happier on the court right now, so that's definetly positive progress."

'I feel so angry with myself for losing so early in the past fortnight. I tried so many different tactic combinations but none of them payed off against Iveta. After having convincing victories in the first round...you think you're doing well but then you lose next round. I am going to take next week off because I need time to practise and think more about my game. Madrid was a perfect tournament for me, but i've struggled since then. I think next week I will have an advantage going into Wimbledon, because next week I will be practising on the grass there and there will be no pressure. As one of the two non-European title winners, I feel I need to step up much more than I am doing because it's more interesting having players from different backgrounds competing for the trophy.'

Chevina Nov 30th, 2005, 10:35 PM Myskina into Berlin Quarterfinals, despite injury.
http://www.sport-channel.com/media/archive/38702.jpg
Despite suffering from a left ankle injury, third
seed Myskina produced a Quarterfinal birth in
Berlin overnight.
Anastasia Myskina advanced to her seventh career quarterfinal yesterday, taking out 25-year-old Alexandra Stevenson in three sets. However, things weren't quite so magical for the Russian, who stumbled to the compact German clay on her left ankle during the third game of the second set. The world number three who looked in full control from the onset of the match, immediately called for the trainer, who fitted the Sydney International champion with firm gauzes. Myskina returned to Centre Court, to where she no longer commanded her American opponent. She went on to drop the second set 7:5- a combination of both a large amount of errors and double faults. Stevenson however, must be credited on her consistency. The American, who fought back from a 6:2, 2:0 deficit, rallied her way back into the match only to fall to a recuperating Myskina 6:4 in the final set. Myskina spoke with Berlin officials following her rather detrimental victory.
"I'm really glad I was able to turn that match around. I thought after I lost the second set, I was gone, for sure. When I fell down in the second set, that really was frightening. I just didn't expect it, you know; it completely took me by suprise. One minute I'm running for a backhand, then I'm feeling all this pain in my ankle. I wasn't sure if I would have been able to complete the match, you know, so I'm proud of myself that I could do that. Hopefully it'll recover by tomorrow's match, but we're- my coach and I- are not so sure about that. We'll just have to see, you know. It's disappointing when something like this happens, especially when you are getting deep into the tournament. But I don't know. I just hope it's better by tomorrow morning."
Despite the evident discomfort, Myskina and Daniela Hantuchova later teamed up to trounce Frenchwoman Mary Pierce and Croatia's Karolina Sprem 6:3, 6:0 in thier opening match in Berlin this week. The Australian and French Open champions will face Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan and China's Na Li, who they have previously beaten before, for a place in the doubles semifinals.

Silvia Farina Elia continued her good form on the red clay of Europe by defeating Serbian Jelena Dokic in two straight sets 6-4 6-2 to reach the semi finals, where she faces Swiss miss (but not the one your thinking of) Patty Schnyder. Also, Farina Elia produced a shock in the doubles with partner Stephanie Dubois when they took out 5th seeds Anna Kournikova and Maria Sharapova 1-6 7-5 6-4
Farina Elia said 'My singles are going good! I am flying under the radar and just taking it one match at a time but I very confident because because my last two losses have been against the winners of the titles but both have lost here!!! But to be honest, I am most excited about the doubles because its Steph and mine biggest win today and we really had to fight for it and it worked today'

Chevina Dec 1st, 2005, 11:40 PM Myskina settles for Berlin semifinals.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40221000/jpg/_40221385_myskina300x245.jpg
22-year-old Anastasia advances to a third consecutive semifinal,
following a three set victory over Kyrgyzstanian Ksenia Palkina.
FROM BERLIN - Despite ankle torments in her third round match, Anastasia Myskina still powers ahead on the European clay. The Russian, who has massed a total of 1.9 million since joining the LTT tour earlier this year, remained strong and Herculean during a three set battle with young Kyrgyzstanian, Ksenia Palkina.
The 22-year-old Myskina started slowly against her 15-year-old opponent, going down a break in the early stages of the match. Palkina, who is notorious for her mixed doubles success, initiated her game with governing force as she gracefully pounded Myskina's heavy groundstrokes with remarkable ease.
Though similar to yesterdays ankle incident, Myskina appeared in certain discomfort, and called for the fitness trainer while trailing 4:2. Again, it was dressed up and Myskina returned to the court fitter and feistier. Nevertheless, Palkina maintained this brilliant performance, to later claim the opening set 7:5.
However, the tables were quickly turned around in the second set, were the third seed forced a rapid comeback. The Sydney International winner created the play she had showed previously in Rome and Paris, dominating her teenage opponent. Subsequently, the Russian #1 battled strongly onward, clenching the second set 6:2 with a vigorous running forehand winner.
In the final set, Myskina simply overpowered her young opponent- satisfying hopes for a semifinal showdown with Italian veteran Silvia Farina-Elia.
Myskina caught up with German tennis officials after her quarterfinal win.
"It was a good match. I really fired myself up there. Thankfully my ankle had healed a bit overnight, so I was able to hit that extra shot. Ksenia is a great player, especially for her age. This is a good win."
When asked of her chances of reaching another final, the Russian commented "Well, you know, it would be amazing for me to reach another final. It really would. But you've got to take yourself seriously in these kind of situations. You can't just sit there hoping or wishing or fantasizing to make that spot. You have to go out there and prove your opponent that you're the almighty, you know. If you believe this, then I think this really does help with your self-confidence."
In addition, Myskina adds "I'm excited for my match with Silvia tomorrow. It should be great match."
iPatty. Dec 1st, 2005, 11:43 PM Good luck Nastya :D Get revenge for me please

http://www.mariaworld.net/berlin0518.jpg
(8)M.Sharapova (RUS) def. (4)A.Ivanovic (SCG) 6-7(6) 7-5 6-4
Berlin, Germany.
Princess Sharapova continues her quest for her first title of the year this week by defeating nemesis, forth seeded, Ana Ivanovic in three hard fought sets 67 75 64 to reach the final of the LTT BMW Women's Interenational. Eight seeded Sharapova struggled at times to overcome an opponent who struck the ball just as hard and sometimes more accurately.
It took the Russian until the middle of the second set to gain any sort or control, and she was able to claim the last three games of the second set and the first three games of the third to put herself in the lead 3-0. In a match with plenty of skilful and competitive rallies, Serbian, Ivanovic broke back to make it 2-3 on her fifth break point when Sharapova netted a backhand. Sharapova then had to hold off a break point as she served for the match at 5-4, but Ivanovic put the ball wide on the match point.
"I didn't think that I could reach final this week, especially against Ana. She's a great player, and she beat me a couple of times earlier in the season, so I was pretty much the underdog with her being seeded higher than me."
"It was a close match and when you're dictating the whole match, you get more confident as the match goes on. I could tell the crowd wanted a little bit more of the match, but sometimes the games go quickly. It's great to know that the crowd is behind you." She will face Italian veteran, Silvia Farina Elia in the final after the Italian surprised the tour by upsetting the favourite Russian, Anastasia Myskina in straight sets 7-5 7-5.
"I've heard a lot of good things about her so I'm sure it's going to be a very interesting final. But I just go out every match and play my game. I don't want to worry about my opponent. Moreover this is final and I only lost to Hingis in finals. So hopefully I could finally win my first title."
