Venus Williams advances in Madrid
Next plays Henin-Hardenne

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2003/20030506/s6.jpg

Madrid, Spain - Sixth seed, Venus Williams, advanced to the quarterfinals of the LTT Memorial Cup in Madrid, earlier today. The American recorded her second ever LTT match victory with a win over Italy's, Francesca Schiavone, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

"It was a good match, especially those first two sets," Venus said. "I thought it was pretty high quality, but, you know, even if it wasn't, I'm just here, trying to win, trying to play my best game. That's all I can expect to do after having such a dismal start on the tour."

Venus was only two points away from losing the match at 7-5, 5-3 30-15, before pulling out eight consecutive games. "That was pretty much as clutch as I can get. I mean, Francesca is an amazing claycourter, and I had to play amazing to win that game and the rest of the games in the match."

In Venus' quarterfinal match, she takes on one of her best friends and her Doubles parter, Justine Henin-Hardenne. "Well, obviously, I would rather we play in the Finals, but I guess we have to take it how it is," Venus mentioned during her Press Conference. "Justine and I are friends and we can leave the match on the court, I'm sure."

JHH Moves Into First Ever Quarter-Final!

http://images.theglobeandmail.com/archives/RTGAM/images/20030605/wtenn0605/0605justine2.jpg
Justine throws her hands up in victory, as she moves into the QF. JHH def. Golovin 6-2, 6-3.

Justine Henin-Hardenne moved into the Qurater-Finals for her first time ever in her singles career. (3)J.Hennin-Hardenne (BEL) def. T.Golovin (FRA) 6-2 6-3.It comes on Clay at the Memorial Cup. But the celebration came to an hulting stop as she found out her opponent. It was none other than her doubles partner, and best friend Venus Williams.

"Yeah, you know, things will not alway be perfect. I am just so glad to be here right now, and I know Venus is too. We will both want to win tomorrow, and the winner will really deserve it. I think we will be able to play great tennis in both singles and doubles. I, also, have no doubt in my mind that this match will not change anything between us."

Justine won in dominating fashion, with a 6-2, 6-3 win. She was just too good today on the Clay, for Golovin. Justine played like she did in doubles, and that just might be the key to more success. Justine, will now need to be ready for singles and doubles action. But she said singles is her top priority, and hopefully it will show. So, good luck JHH!

CASTANO EASES PAST PELLETIER, DOKIC

http://www.sporever.fr/Resultats_Tennis/photos/c_castano.jpg

Colombia's Catalina Castano eased into the Quarter Finals in the LTT Memorial Cup in Madrid. Castano passed Marie-Eve Pelletier in the most one-sided first round match of the tournament, prevailing 6-1 6-3 at the drop of just four games. Yesterday, she moved past Jelena Dokic in the second round, who had a tough three set first round win. Castano won the first set with just one break, and rallied to win the second set 7-5, after hitting a forehand down the line amungst shouts of 'Catalina' from the large section of the crowd covered in Colombian supporters. 'It was pretty special. I had a lot of support today and that definitely helped me through. It just shows that even though I will never get to play a tournament in my home country in Colombia, I still can have support from Colombians in Madrid. It was very nice to play Jelena and Marie-Eve and I was very happy with my play in both matches. I have been unlucky in the past three tournaments, losing to the eventual winner or finalist before the Quarter Finals in fairly close matches. This is my best result of my career, reaching the Quarter Finals here so tomorrow I will go out fist pumping and confident!' Catalina Castano after her second round win yesterday.

CASTANO TRAMPLES KRAJICEK

http://www.diariolavoz.net/Portales/La-Voz/Data/CATALINA%20CASTAÑO.JPG
The Colombian won a 45-minute
battle in straight sets, 6-4 7-5.

Catalina Castano has advanced to the Semi Finals in infatic style, stunning Michaella Krajicek in straight sets. Castano never looked troubled against the Dutchwoman, who was coming off a shock win over #2 seed Sesil Karatancheva in the previous round. Castano combined her sheer consistency and kept her cool throughout the match and managed an impressive stat of 16 winners and 7 unforced errors for the clash. 'I was so happy to win today. I knew what Michaella can do with the ball and I was really motivated to win this one. I am just happy to be in the Semi Finals and really hope to do some damage to Venus tomorrow. We will see what happens. I just want to thank Melanie Molitor for mentioning me as a threat before this tournament began, it has really helped my motivation and it has definitely helped me keep my game together.' Castano also combined with Indian Sania Mirza in the doubles event and booked their position in the Semi Finals when they destroyed the number three seeds in the Quarter Finals, 60 75.

Venus wins despite erratic play
Plays Castano next

http://sportsmed.starwave.com/media/ten/2003/0601/photo/a_venus_vt.jpg

Madrid, Spain - Sixth seed, Venus Williams, advanced to the semifinals of the LTT Memorial Cup on a hot and humid day in Madrid, Spain. Venus was a winner over her best friend on tour, Justine Henin-Hardenne, 7-6(0), 7-6(0). The match was over two hours long and featured erratic play from both sides of the net.

"It was obvious that both of us were uncomfortable out there," Venus said. "We're like sisters and we had to play each other so early in a small tournament- it is disappointing to play, but I'm just happy one of us got through and we're both playing some great tennis."

Venus committed 56 unforced errors and smacked only 29 winners on the slow courts of Madrid. The sun began to shine when the tiebreaks came into action and Venus began to use her serve and lethal volleys to put away the last seven points in each set, and the tiebreaks.

"It is what has been the difference. Justine has a small body, so she can't use her power all the time. It is not like that with me. With my body, I'm able to hit huge serves and come in behind them. In tiebreaks, when both players are nervous, that is what is useful," Venus stated.

Battle Of The Doubles Partners?
~JHH Falls To Venus~

http://espndeportes.espn.go.com/2003/photos2005/0621/a_Henintriste_h.jpg
Justine looks lost, as she is being over-powered by Venus.
JHH lost to Venus 6-7(0), 6-7(0)

Justine Henin-Hardenne just could not muster the strength to take out Venus Williams today. (6)V.Williams (USA) def. (3)J.Hennin-Hardenne (BEL) 7-6(0) 7-6(0). It was an ok match, with both ladies not playing to their fullest. But Venus really turned her game on, in both tie-breaks, leaving JHH in the dust. However, both ladies had more UFE than winners, which shows that they did NOT want to play eachother. They are best friends, and doubles partners.

"Well, I did good to get to the Quarters. It is hard to have to play someone you are great friends with, and want them to succeed also. But I am just glad I lose to her and anyone else. I really hope she wins the tournament. But now I have doubles to fall back on. We won today, and I think we could take another title."

After dropping the first set, JHH/Venus really took their game to the next level. (1)J.Henin-Hardenne/V.Williams def. M.Domachowska/A.Medina Garrigues 3-6 7-5 6-3. It was a good match, and really let them get things straightened out in the first. But now Venus moves on, and JHH goes back to doubles. JHH said their is no hard feelings AT ALL, they are great friends and it will stay that way. So good luck Venus in the Semi's, and good luck Venus/JHH in doubles!

CASTANO POUNDS VENUS, ADVANCES TO DEBUT FINAL
http://www.elcolombiano.com/BancoMedios/Imagenes/catalinacastañoREU28032005.jpg
(8) CASTANO d. (6) V.WILLIAMS 6-2 7-5

Eigth seed Catalina Castano played in what she described as the match of her career, as she showed no mercy in defeating Venus Williams 6-2 7-5 in their Semi Final encounter at the Memorial Cup in Madrid today. Castano grabbed the early lead in the opening set, leading 3-0 and never looked back, conceeding just two more games after Venus started playing more aggressive. The second set was the tightest of sets, with the score being equal throughout the set. The score was level at 6-2 2-2 before Williams broke Castano's serve, approaching the ball and pounding two return winners downt the line. But the South American, who grew up on clay courts, immediately broke back, with some clever drop shots and lobs. As the score reached 5-5, it appeared that both players were capable of capturing the second set, but it was the consistency of Castano who overwhelmed the sixth seed and advanced to her debut final with a 6-2 7-5 win. Castano will now face the unseeded Nathalie Dechy who has destroyed all of her opponents this week. Both finalists are yet to drop a set, and it looks to be an intriguing final between the two. 'I am really surprised to be in the final. Of course I am really really happy because I just knew the result would come eventually. I was so happy with how I played today against Venus, she really pushed me in the second set and I was perhaps lucky on some of the calls which could have gone either way. I thank my supporters this week because I couldn't have made the final without them. I hope things go well tomorrow, I know that Dechy is a very very good player but I think I am capable of winning tomorrow.'

Castano also advanced to the final of the doubles event, where she partnered Indian Sania Mirza, who was the top seed in the singles event. The Colombian/Indian combination overwhelmed the top seeded team of Henin-Hardenne and Williams in a three set thriller, 7-5 4-6 7-5 to advance to their debut final in their debut tournament together.

Castano Claims Singles and Doubles Crown in Madrid
http://www.ctorbetello.it/Foto/Castano.jpg
The Colombian defeated Nathalie Dechy
3-6 7-5 6-4 in the Singles Final and teamed
up with Sania Mirza to claim the doubles title.

Catalina Castano won her first singles and doubles title at the Memorial Cup in Madrid today. She defeated unseeded Nathalie Dechy in three sets, coming from 6-3 5-3 behind to win 3-6 7-5 6-4 in a high quality final. Dechy was in complete control in the first set, leading 3-0 and 4-1 and never looked troubled as she combined accuracy and power. Castano kept fighting, but she looked close to bowing out at 6-3 4-1. But from there on, the Frenchwoman just seemed shaky and looked very nervous. Castano noticed this and it gave her more confidence, and at 5-5 in the second set, the South American never looked like faultering as she hit some beautiful groundstrokes that painted the lines. But Dechy once again grabbed the momentum immediately in the final set, grabbing a 4-1 lead once again. Dechy was serving to take the score to 5-1, but an epic game which drained both players proved to be decicive, Castano breaking and running away with the next 4 games to claim her first career title. On match point, Castano fell onto her back and dropped her raquet, then ran up and kissed the Frenchwoman for the match. 'It was very special today. I can't believe it. I'm just lost for words. I went about the match just fighting and staying in there...I never thought I could actually win but it was amazing. Nathalie maybe was even the better player out of us today, but I guess she got a little bit nervous. I would love to see her do well next week in her home tournament, because she was unlucky today. I am so happy!' The exhaused Colombian stated after the match. But her success didn't end there, when she came back out on court again teaming up with Indian Sania Mirza to claim the doubles title in their first time paired together. They defeated the number two seeds, Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Alicia Molik in two sets which consealed a back-to-back defeat of the top two seeds for the Indian-Colombian duo.

Thanks to all who have supported Catalina this week!
