Russian Anastasia Myskina reacts strongly
during her straight set demolishion to the
hands of Steffi Graf in Spain last week.
There's been a lot of controversy following former number one Anastasia Myskina's comments on retirement talks. The world number five recently stated she was "ready for the end" and added that she believes she has "achieved all that's possible for myself". However this week, Anastasia has also hinted the Tier II event in Italy could be her concluding event.
Italian journalist Loris Peduzzi caught up with the Russian shortly after her arrival in Italy.
__________________________________________________ ___________________________
Q. Thank you for joining us today, Anastasia.
"Thank you."
Q. Now, obviously there has been quite a bit of talk over the comments you made last week over retirement issues. Have you come to any decision about what you want to do in terms of your tennis career?
"I've certainly done a lot of thinking about it, yes. Originally I aimed to be the world number one, you know. That was my goal. I've achieved that.
Secondly, I wanted a Grand Slam title, and thanks to Daniela (Hantuchova), I have that honour. And now that my results are deteriorating, I do feel very depressed when I'm on the court. I feel pathetic- I really do. That then leads to me ... questioning my future with tennis. I'm still not entirely sure of what I want to do, but currently, I am still passionate about winning more matches, and getting my ranking back up to where I want it to be."
Q. So basically, you haven't made a decision- however you still have the desire to get back to the top again.
- I mean, wouldn't the best decision to make be to continue playing tennis?
"That's right. But the reason I'm still holding back on that decision is because I'm lacking the confidence part, you know. It's difficult to keep a positive mind when your results are getting worse, and your ranking is falling. My coach and I are working on that part, but I think it's gonna take some time before I'm fully confident on the court".
Q. Anna Smashnova, your first round opponent. Your thoughts?
"Yeah, I mean that's gonna be tough. All my matches are tough at the moment. I'm good friends with her coach, so hopefully it'll be a friendly match. My main concern at the moment is to concentrate on my game, and try to play some better tennis."
Q. Is this, or isn't this going to be your final LTT match?
"Well, if I lose, then possibly. If I win, well obviously not. I'm trying to stay focused on the winning part."
Q. Thank you, Anastasia. We wish you the best of luck this week.
"Thank you very much."

Melanie Molitor
Another week, another column. So what happened in Monte Carlo this week? Seems like a little of the AO as Martina Hingis, she of the 10-match winning streak and first to reach the four-digit numerical ranking in singles, did what she should have done in Sydney: win the event and solidify her no.1 ranking.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/mc1.jpg
Yet another trophy shot.
Oh look, Lindsay and Martina lost to the eventual winners in three sets yet again. Nevertheless, a milestone has been reached as Martina now holds both top rankings in singles and doubles simultaneously without winning a title. Say what you will of the ranking system but at least it rewards consistency. She should not be content though as they only have a 10 point margin from Anastasia Myskina.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/presemishoot.jpg
Pre-semi shoot: What were they thinking!?
Although losing to Ashley Harkleroad (the new protégé of Serena Williams-Santoro’s former coach) & Chanda Rubin (Martina Hingis’ original doubles partner in season one!), the semi-final between Davenport & Hingis vs. Seles & Stevenson proved to be the entertaining highlight in the doubles. But it was the final which just had more energy that paid off in spades for the Americans and for the paying audience.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/s1memo.jpg
Season One Memories!
Looking at Martina’s path to the singles title, you might say she was expected to come through her half. Well for what it’s worth, being seeded no.1 means more than coming through but actually winning the event. We saw that now didn’t we? However, the upsets caused by the lower ranked players not only helped Martina but also the tour as it served as a wake-up call to everyone that anyone can be successful. The bonus for Miss Hingis was she finally met new people from new countries. It will be good to hear from her how she analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the coaching system of each nation.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/mc2.jpg
It ain't a cup, Betty Barclay, it's a trophy?
Maria Sharapova, who seemed destined for the no.1 ranking after Sydney, finally climbed her hurdle of Ana Ivanovic. She lost to Martina in a three-setter worthy of a final. She’s at least getting closer and closer but needs to figure out a little more that hitting hard may get you far but not totally. Remember: being there and getting there are two different things.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/no1.jpg
Several weeks ago in Sydney at the cusp of no.1.
Who to Watch Out For:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/Castano2.jpg
Hey Yo, Castano!
Notice her achievements in the past four weeks. The woman has consistently made it past everyone in her draw to always meet and lose to a player who eventually makes an impact with the whole tournament. Apart from losing to Iveta Benesova, who eventually finished runner-up in that event, Catalina Castano has gone through tournaments until she meets a seeded player. Consistency and tenacity such as hers not only deserves to be recognized but also realized that she is due for a breakthrough. Next week, the tour splits between Rome and Madrid. This just might be her chance to impress even more.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/benesovawellignton.jpg
Well Iveta!
I just have a good feeling with this young lady. And for some reason in particular, I find that she’s going to be standing in Monica Seles’ path a lot more.
All The Issues You Could Fit:
Retirement Calls?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/sfereco.jpg
Silvia Farina Elia: Dancing in the Dark or Me & My Shadow.
Next week will be a homecoming for this tour veteran. I happen to be in the know that a private correspondence has recently occurred between her and a former doubles partner whom she had success with before. She might even be sticking around until the French Open to see if she and mixed doubles partner Filippo Volandri can recapture that flair which led them to the Olympic Gold Medal.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/leaving.jpg
Anastasia Myskina, leaving?
The statement was: "I feel I've achieved everything I can." The key words to analyze here are “everything I can.” If indeed Ms. Myskina decides to take her tennis racquets home despite being the second most successful woman on tour then she would be robbing herself of a place in history.
Who else here remembers Cory Ann Avants? Quickly now, without looking at the season one records or history thread. I thought as much.
Like the notorious Cory Ann Avants who decided that she was too big for the tour, retiring this early in the race would permanently stamp Anastasia with the “could have been something bigger” mark in this tennis historian’s memory. Will she be a trademark or a passing fancy? Only she can answer that.
Rankings-wise (we're not including season one results), she’s been the best Russian among her peers and going away would conceivably open the door for the rest.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/allrussians.jpg
Those nasty peers!
Recommitment?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/jhhreco.jpg
J-Double Ha-Ha
Justine Henin-Hardenne has just announced boldly that she is shifting focus from her doubles success with Venus Williams to concentrate on her singles results. Now whether or not this will be as effective as Sinead O’Connor taking out a full page ad from a newspaper telling everyone to leave her alone remains to be seen. Playing the lower tier event this week can’t hurt and it’s always good to hear a professional talk this way.
Her fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters needs less help but is currently seeking inspiration to manage that breakthrough we all know she is capable of. The woman she is consulting with could probably give her a few tips.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/couldnothurt.jpg
With a guru?
Well that is all for this week and the Weekly Melanie Monitor as presented by Miss Melanie Molitor shall continue to evolve in the following weeks. Again, send in those e-mails for the bi-monthly mailbag feature!
Munchen Nov 6th, 2005, 11:49 AM Clijsters Ready To Rumble
http://www.tribuneindia.com/2005/20050626/sp6.jpg
Roma; Italy - A refreshed Kim Clijsters didn't sound like the same player who was questioning if she would ever return to the rich clay after a loss in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.
Clijsters arrived in Roma; Sunday as the fourth seed in the Italian International Championships. The LTT's fourth-ranked player is scheduled to play #25 Alexandra Stevenson in the round of 32 Tuesday. After losing for the first time before the Quarterfinals last week in Singles to Vera Zvonareva, she's ready to go.
"It was a big shock for me to lose early last week, I was really confident with my game and tactics. Especially after reaching the Australian Open Semifinals, I felt great." Davenport said during a press conference on Sunday. "I want to keep the roll going that I've built -- and this is not my favourite surface, but i've been practicing hard the last few days and im determined to perfect my game."
--------------------------------------
Q: How do you feel this week?
CLIJSTERS: Refreshed, happy & healthy. After losing early last week, I had some rest and really enjoyed the sites of Monte Carlo (Monaco) for 3 days. It was a good rest for me.
Q: Rankings were released and you are still ranked 4th. Very luck after last week.
CLIJSTERS: After last week, I definately thought i'd drop down a few spots, but luckily alot of others seeds loss in early rounds and that has kept me where I am. There are alor of rising players, its definately going to be tough to keep in the TOP 5.
Q: How do you feel about your draw this week?
CLIJSTERS: It's, you know, not to bad. Alexandra is definately a rising player and its going to be a very difficult match, she defeated Anna Kournikova last week and, you know - she seems to be playing well. Ive been practicing since my arrival and now I just want to focus on my first match.
Q: What are some goals you have set for yourself?
CLIJSTERS: Definately playing my best tennis, you know - When I play good tennis, im very happy. Also im focusing on trying to win a title and keeping my ranking in the top 5. Also winning a few more matches on this dirt before, the FO arrives.
Q: So any thoughts on retirement? Sharapova, Myskina, Henin and a few others have made comments to do with quitting the tour, what are your thoughts?
CLIJSTERS:  Please, its not the end of my life if I lose a few matches, its expected. All this talk from other players is ridiculous, they want to be the best, yet they wont stick around a season to test themselves, they play 4-5 tournaments and expect to win them all.
Q: Thank You for the few answers & good luck Kim.
CLIJSTERS: Thanks.

Ashey Harkleroad has worked hard the last week. She has trained the whole weekend with her coach and her confidence rose after her doubleswin last sunday. Now she took out K-Sperm who's also known for being a quick player, fast on the court and even faster out again.
Harkleroad won 7-5 6-4 and will now face Anna Pornikova, who has been lacking in form recently.

Russian Anastasia Myskina overcame Israeli Anna Smashnova in
the opening round in Rome today, winning 6:4, 7:6(8).
Seeded fifth again this week, Anastasia Myskina held her nerve to seal a comfortable straight sets victory over Anna Smashova in the first round of the Italian International Championships, in Rome overnight.
The Russian, who has been the murmer of most conversation due to her retirement talks, showed no signs of distraction- producing solid, consistent tennis to settle a second round clash with American Monica Seles.
"This is a good win. I'm relieved to walk away the winner. Anna played very well. I knew it was gonna be a tough match, and tomorrow's should be difficult too. Right now though, I'm just focusing on playing some proper tennis and the way I played today helps my confidence levels, so everything is looking good heading into my next match. Nevertheless, I never expect to win anymore."

A broad smile spread across 22 year-old Kim Clijsters face following her emphatic 6-3 6-4 first round defeat of Alexandra Stevenson, the American ranked #25 on the LTT.
The Belgium, fourth seed, recovered from a slight lapse in her standard of play which allowed Stevenson to pull back from a 4-1 deficit to 4-3, before pocketing the first set in 28-minutes. Some 22-minutes later, Clijster pocketed the match, when she struck her twelve ace to finish off in style.
Clijsters outplayed her American opponent, hitting a toal of 16 winners. 6 FH and 10 BH winners, alon with 12 ACES.
"Im very delighted and happy to pull through this match with great comfort. I definately played alot better tennis this week, my serve was working really well for me and I was moving alot better." Clijsters said.
In the second round, fourth seeded Clijsters faces a dangerous opponent in Elena Dementieva of Russia.

Did anyone say "Princess of the court?" No? Well, then you better have to!
Ashley Harkleroad, USA, has been suffering a bit in singles when she started, but has been playing good with her partner Chanda Rubin in doubles. Last week they won the tier 1 tournament in Monte Carlo. The victory clearly made Ashley a better singles player and she finally won her first singlesmatch over Karolina Sperm.
After that she had a tough match in front of her, Anna Pournikova, who had had a tough match.
Harkleroads confidence had gained a lot, enough to put up a real fight against world #3.

Harkley with the backhandwinner which made her win the match.
Porny took the first set 7-5 after 1 hour and 13 minutes. Both players played great tennis and Ashley was just lucky to get the second set in 49 minutes. The players kept playing fantastic set, and after a 3 hour and 1 minute could Ashley rise and shine and go to the net as the winner.

Anastasia Myskina celebrated her most
convincing victory on the LTT tour, defeating
Monica Seles last night.
As one of a total seven Russians competing on Day 2, Anastasia Myskina was just one of the two Russians who managed to escape to the following round in Rome last night. Myskina, who was coming off a solid straight sets win over Israeli Anna Smashnova, was in full control against American Monica Seles, dropping just two games to advance with a 6:2, 6:0 victory.
"I suprised even myself today. Everything I did just seemed to work. I felt much more comfortable and relaxed on the court. Monica is a very good player, and I really respect her. The score looks very easy, but it was definetly tougher, especially in the first set."
"I'm looking forward to my next match against Ana Ivanovic. She's a very sweet girl, we've played doubles together before. It should be a good match. I've beaten her once before, so I hope I can do it again."

Former world number one, Anastasia Myskina celebrates
following a straight sets win over world number two,
Ana Ivanovic.
Russia's Anastasia Myskina advanced to a third career semifinal, defeating Serbian Ana Ivanovic for the second time this season, in the Rome quarterfinals tonight. The former world number one pounded groundstroke after groundstroke- proving simply too strong for her teenage Serbian opponent.
Following the match, Myskina told sports journalists she would be staying on the tour, for at the very least the end of the 2006 season.
"I'm so happy with my game at the moment. I owe it all to my coach, and to the LTT organisers. I'm feeling so confident and fresh on the court. It's great to be playing shorter matches, and it's a great feeling when you come out the victor in these [kind of] matches. I'm going to stop short of saying this is the win of my career, but I'm certainly overjoyed about it. Ana played a great match- it's obvious why she is ranked so high.
--
Kim will be tough tomorrow. I'm really unsure what to expect, because I haven't played her since in Sydney, where I won the title. But she's improved since then."
--
"I've decided that I will remain on the tour for a while, at least until the end of next season, as to achieve greater hights, and prove to myself I'm capable of more. I also enjoy the game just too much to be able to leave it."
Chevina Nov 10th, 2005, 09:54 AM Daniela & Nastya! I didn't expect you to beat the winners of last week! Very well done, girls.

"There were a lot of ups and downs for me but also for her," Rodionova said. "After very close first set, I lost my rhythm in the second set and felt like I let her back in the match. I wasn't aggressive and started to feel it physically, but I still managed to stay in control of the points. After leading 4-1 and Hingis was back to 4-all, I told myself that I can't lose that. I kept thinking I could do what I did in the first set and kept my composure. I was more aggressive, coming in more at 5-4 and putting pressure on her. It is my the biggest win on LTT and hope it helps me to climb to the top and prove to all that me, Nastya Rodionoiva from Russia, is the best ever player Hope I will have more win and will beat world #1 many many times in future"

no probs. It was a good match, good to see that it takes a lot to beat me out of a tournament. Davenport REALLY needs to win one against Kim, cos they have played 3 times and not won one, but all 3 have been GREAT matches, and they should have a good rivalry, so Davy needs to get on the board so it can be the best rivalry on LTT! :bounce:
ill juse the same tactic next week but change them so i can win matches like these!!!!! :wavey: Thanks for the advice!

Anastasia Myskina celebrates with
fans after fighting back to defeat
world number four, Kim Clijsters.
Anastasia Myskina caused another upset this week, eliminating Belgian Kim Clijsters in the LTT event in Rome overnight. The Russian clawed her way back from the hands of defeat to seal the match 6:3, 5:7, 6:4, despite holding several match points at 5:4 in the second set.
Thanks for joining us today, Anastasia. Your confidence must be sky-high- first Ivanovic, and now Clijsters!
"Yeah, I know, I feel great at the moment, you know. I'm very relaxed on the court, and my game just seems to be flowing much better on this surface this week. I'm thrilled to be in the finals."
You had 2 match points in the second set there. What was going through your mind when you were trailing 4:1 in the final set?
"Well, I don't think I was doing much wrong. Kim was just playing too good. I'm very happy I was able to turn it around, and fight back to win the match."
Ashley Harkleroad now, who beat Anastasia Rodionova in the other semifinals. How do you think your game compares to hers?
"Oh she won, did she? I didn't know. I don't really know much about her. I'll just play my game, you know, see what happens. I'm already thrilled to have made it this far."
Thanks for joining us Anastasia, and good luck in the final.
"Thanks a lot!"
After reaching the singles final, Myskina also teamed up with Daniela Hantuchova to defeat Canadian Sonya Jeyaseelan and China's Na Li in three sets. The Australian Open winners will now take on top seeds Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis in the final.

Chevina Nov 12th, 2005, 08:48 AM Myskina falls short in Rome finals.

Russian fifth seed Anastasia Myskina couldn't produce the
winning goods against American wildcard Ashley Harkleroad.
Dropping just one set enroute to the final, Anastasia Myskina was certainly looking the favourite to win the Tier II event in Italy today. Defeating two top five players (Clijsters and Ivanovic) in tremendous display spoke well for her performace today. However, American wildcard Ashley Harkleroad was the one player able to stop the former world number one this week.
The American fought back, trailing 4:6, 2:4 and saving several break points in the seventh game of the second set gifted the youngster the much needed confidence. From then on, Harkleroad looked in full control, and she in fact went on to seal the second set 7:5.
She continued the momentum throughout the final set too, and eventually Myskina was simply putty in Harkleroad's hands.
"What can I say? Nobody likes to lose, especially not in finals. But you know, this week has been great. I beat two top five players again and gotten my ranking up a spot or two. It's all good preparation for the French Open next week. I am frustrated at myself from dropping that lead, but you have to focus on the good side of that. Next time, I'm not gonna let that happen."
"Ashley played well today. She's got a bright future ahead of her. Congratulations to her."
