Wellington City Tennis Complex New Zealand



Welcome to Wellington in New Zealand. LTT's first stop Tier 3 tournament. The decision to make Wellington our first Tier 3 tournament was a wise one as the tour's directors are hoping they can attract a wider audience for next weeks Grand Slam The Australian Open.

Basically this is a tournament for those players who are still yet to make a statement in the Ladies Tennis Tour. This is one of 5 Tier 3 tournaments where you can build some confidence and work out your strategies. Generally, when players are attending a Tier 3 Tournament, other players will be attending a Tier 2 Tournament (Except this week as Canberra is a T1B).

Players to watch are the Top 4 Seeds, (1)Elena Dementieva, (2)Daniela Hantuchova, who just missed out on Canberra and (3)Anabel Medina-Garrigues, (4)Mary Pierce who both seem to be in solid shape.


Who knows, you could even take out the title.

Newcomer to the Ladies Tennis Tour, Iveta Benesova, had to overcome qualifing before she think about playing her first main draw event in Wellington. She had to overcome a tough challenge by Natalie Dechy in the first round. Both new to the tour, it took almost 2 hours for Benesova to close out the match 6-4 7-5. Both seemed tight and nervous about playing their first match on the tour, but Benesova seemed to hold her nerve better when it came to the big points.
In the second round Benesova faught hard to beat Alicia Molik, 7-6 6-2. The first set was tight with both players having oppourtunities to take the set, but Benesova showed how mentally tough she can be in close situations and took it after just under an hour of fighting hard. With her confidence high she took the second set in half an hour, beating the favourite to qualify.
Benesova stated after her second round qualifying match, "I'm thrilled to have qualified after fighting hard I wasn't expecting it, espically after Alicia's doubles run last week to the final. She was pretty high in confidence before this match, but I was the better player at the end of the day and that's all that matters".
Benesova and Zvonareva last their first round match in Doubles to Dechy/Medina-Garrigues, 6-3 6-3.

Shaughnessy screams with joy after her 1st round victory

Wellington---Meghann Shaughnessy advanced to the quarterfinals in Wellington, New Zealand after a 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-1 victory over Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela. Meghann was on the verge of defeat before taking the second set and finishing of Kabchi, who appeared dejected from the loss.

"I'm so glad to pull through this match" said Shaughnessy. "I know Maria must feel bad, but that is the glory of sport...sometimes you win sometimes you lose. Shaughnessy was clearly the fitter of the two, and it showed as Maria didn't have it in her to hang in during the third set.

"Fitness played a role, yeah, definetly. For me it makes me stronger and more confident knowing I was able to step it up today and pull through, despite having a poor record at LTT thus far and Maria was playing so well."

Castano sucks...she should just give up.

I don't think it's possible for Pierce to win a match lol!
