Beijing & Vine
Beijing, China to Sydney, Australia – The first event of season three of the Ladies Tennis Tour has just concluded and we have just crowned three new number one players. Taking the honors for becoming the newly crowned doubles number ones are Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium and Venus Williams of the USA who defeated Meghann Shaughnessy and Serena Williams. Speaking of which, we also have a new number one, someone who is actually familiar with the top spot. We are talking about Miss Martina Hingis of Switzerland who will now be having her fourth week at the top spot after her retirement last year.
Last night’s finals began ominously enough as action started at 8 PM primetime. The Swiss Miss started things positively with an early break but the Russian Juggernaut Maria Sharapova showed what got her into the finals easily: two big-fisted shots and a scream that could unsettle any soul. Nevertheless, the Tennis gods would be on one side of the court today as Miss Hingis got the lucky smiles in the first set. Clawing three straight games to take the first set, Hingis’s fight was not yet at and end.
http://media.hingis.org/photos/tokyo2000/03_G.jpg
Scratch ending.
Things were steadier in the second set but a quick mind and even quicker hands would prevail against the onslaught of youth as Martina Hingis proved her mettle by once again claiming three straight games after being set points down. The tale of the tape? We had our girl back.
Landing in Sydney, Miss Hingis’ first comments after her and the tour’s first big week:
http://media.hingis.org/photos/interviews-press/interv99_77.jpg
Sydney Conference calls.
"Wait a minute........ there. Who the deuce thought tennis watches were a good idea anyway? Anyways, questions, questions......."
Match'n Typin' :
“I was very nervous going in as like I said, Maria is both confidence and weapons. I’m more of brains and shot-making which causes me to over think and collapse at times. Thankfully enough, I’m so god at finals. I’ve only ever lost one and that was during the Olympics but otherwise my record has been clean.
Maria was very good today. I kept going ‘screw it, I’m too dainty for this,’ as she was perpetually overpowering me from the baseline. The trick was to do a Steffi Graf and lure her into the net for easy passes and behind the back lobs. Worked didn’t it? Didn’t it?”
Tour resurfin' & defendin':
“I just got a printout of the Sydney draw and I could shed a tear. We have sixteen seeded players! We could only dream of this many participants last year but now we have them. Everything will be so stacked against me as I see names of both old minds and young muscles gunning to make it big on the tour. I think I’ll go crush some egos this week.”
Doublin':
“Lindsay warned me that things will be different this week in Sydney. Bless that girl. She can fake an injury, I mean, heal an injury so quickly. I’m lusting after the top spot in doubles as much as the Tier I titles. It’s the only thing left for me to do rankings-wise.”
Outlookin':
“How does the future look like? ~smiling~Well……. ~Miss Hingis leaves the podium laughing and singing “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.”~”
Defenses begin Tuesday.
Chevina Oct 2nd, 2005, 08:29 AM It looks like Vento-Kabchi and Vaidisova are in the same quarter with Myskina again. It's just a gut feeling, but I don't think Anastasia will do as well this week. Good luck Kim, Angela and Daniela!

http://cache.wtnphotos.com/3156/8551997castano.jpg
Colombian Catalina Castano defeated Israeli Anna Smashnova in straight sets, 6-2 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Qantas International in Sydney. The Colombian won the opening set by two breaks of serve after trailing 2-0 in the first two games. But Castano played much more aggressive tennis and started to cause a lot of trouble for Smashnova. Castano won the next 7 games to lead 6-2 1-0. However, Smashnova played much better in the second set, with her serves becoming more effective. Castano however also improved her play in the second set and broke Smashnova to love at 3-3 and went on to take the match 6-2 6-4. 'I feel great after the win today. It makes up for my loss almost two weeks ago. I don't know much about Svetlana Kuznetsova. But I know that I can just go out there against her and hold my head high and play the best I can.'
UDACHi Oct 5th, 2005, 01:47 AM J. JANKOVIC/E. Dementieva

An interview with:
JELENA JANKOVIC
THE MODERATOR: Questions for Jelena, please.
Q: Congratulations on your win out there today. How did it feel?
JJ: Oh it felt great. I feel like I, you know, made a successful debut and I am really happy with this result.
Q: What did you think of your opponent?
JJ: I think to get any win is great but Elena was playing great. First set I kind of, you know, soared through but in set two it was not so easy. She really was able to put some pressure on me and I really had to step up my game and really execute my shots.
Q: Next round is Martina Hingis. How do you feel about that?
JJ: I think that I might not be the most prepared player in the draw right now but, you know, if I lose I will not use poor training as an excuse. No matter what, I just hope for a strong performance and, you know, just play my best and have fun. I think Martina will definitely be a stearn test and it will also help to like, you know, help me see how I compare with top players.
Q: Can you tell us about how your partnership with Lucie Safarova came about.
JJ: Oh, you know, we just kind of both needed partners so we decided to play together. I really have no expectation for doubles. I mean, I'd like to win but, you know, it's mainly for practice and just to have fun. So, you know, I guess we will see how that goes.
Q: Thank you for your time and good luck in the coming rounds, Jelena.
JJ: Thank you.

http://www.tennis.info/images/China4/12Sun/Castano1163.jpg
Catalina Castano lost to Russian seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second closest match of the day, 6-4 1-6 7-6(4). Despite the loss, Castano says she is making good progress in her singles. 'I was happy with the way I played, just frustrated I couldn't take the tiebreak. I was confident and I played the best I could, Svetlana just was a bit better than me. She played great tennis and I guess was more confident to go for her shots in the tiebreak so congratulations to her.' In the doubles however, Castano was able to fight back from one set down with her partner Dinara Safina to win the match relatively convincingly, 5-7 6-3 6-1. 'Dinara played great! We worked well together as a team I think, and I hope we can continue our run in the rest of the tournament.'

The fifth-seeded Belgian broke Mirza, who overhit a forehand on match point, in a match that lasted 2hours 52minutes. Afterwards, she shook her fists in victory.
Asked about her win today Clijsters said "Mirza played a very good game, making a few to many unforced errors in the first set, I wasn't really playing my best tennis, but luckily she wasn't playing hers either."
In the first set, both players struggled with the windy on court conditions, but it was Mirza who was first to crack, throwing in 3 consecutive DF's to give Clijsters the first set 6-4.
"It definately is a major change from Beijing, the weather today was unpredictable and we both really struggled to play our best."Clijsters said
After a Injury Timeout and change of clothes midway through the third set. Clijsters came out and broke Mirza's momentum to serve for the third set and match and finally won it 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
"Mirza played a very good game. I was happy to win, but not under those circumstances, it was really difficult to play with my injured left wrist."
After defeating unknown Sania Mirza of India in a marathon 3 set match, Fifth Seeded Kim Clijsters went straight to the practice courts with Haynes to practice for doubles after they had great success last week reaching the Semifinals of Beijing.
In the next round Clijsters faces fellow compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne.

An interview with:
JELENA JANKOVIC
THE MODERATOR: Questions for Jelena, please.
Q: Huge win today. Where did that come from?
JJ: Oh I don't know, honestly. I had to dig very deep for this win. Honestly I surprised even myself today.
Q: What do you think really did the job out there today?
JJ: Umm, you know, I really don't know. In the second set Martina really raised her game and sort of, you know, really made me grind and hang on for this one. So, yeah. It feels nice.
Q: What does this do for your confidence?
JJ: Oh it does a lot. You know, I went out there kind of just hoping to see how I measured up. A win is just, you know, amazing because I really showed everybody what I was made of.
Q: Also, a doubles winner. Thoughts on that.
JJ: Well, you know, like I say, I am not really having expectation for the doubles but it is definitely good to win a round there. Good for me to hit the ball around and, you know, doubles is relaxed so. It helps.
Q: Martina Hingis. Is she really the best player around?
JJ: Well obviously, my first event, I really can not know. But I do, you know, I don't think she will be top ranked anymore because you know. Other players close behind may pass her. But I do have great respect for her. She really made me play and, you know, I'm just, I can't believe my own self right at this time.
Q: Congratulations Jelena, good luck with Safina.
JJ: Thank you.

-VSR- Oct 6th, 2005, 01:36 AM JHH Into Round Of 16
http://www.monoli.com/tennis/austra03/henin12101.jpg
Justine Henin-Hardenne was won her second straight career match, and is into the Round Of 16. J.Henin-Hardenne (BEL) def. (12) S.Jeyseelan (CAN) 6-3 3-6 6-2. It was a very good match, just with some lop-sided runs from each player. Justine played very well in the first set, when Jeyseelan was off. But then Jeyseelan was on and Justine was off. But the third set both players gave it there all, and Hardenne prevailed.
"I was just playing so well in the first and third sets. I am finally coming into my game. It is a great feeling." said Justine Henin-Hardenne in her post match interview.
Justine will really need to bring her best game tomorrow, when she plays rival Belgian, Kim Clijsters. This will be a very hyped and entertaining match. It should be a packed house, for this Belgan vs. Belgian Round Of 16 match. But Clijsters is the favorite, being the 5th seed. Good luck Justine!

Chevina Oct 6th, 2005, 06:12 AM Myskina advances, despite dropping first set in a match she later wins.
http://photogallery.tiscali.it/repository/sport/La_foto_giorno/4tennis.jpg
Myskina dropped just her third set on the LTT tour yesteday, following her victory over Italian Flavia Pennetta.
"I think this is a really good start for the tournament. Flavia (Pennetta) is a very good player, you know. Thanfully, I was able to puncture the match with some good shots and I was able to outlast to the end, so you know, that's definetly a confidence thing. I'm not very confident for tonight's match though. I mean, Jelena is very very solid and strong opponent. I think she plays my game better than I do. But, who knows?, we'll just have to see. Of course, I want to win so badly.
That's why the win yesterday was so much to me, you know? If I can keep winning those kind of matches, then I think I can become more confident, improve my game, work on strategies ... you know, those kind of this. Also though I think that if I do keep winning those kind of matches, people might expect a whole lot more of me, which I really don't like at all. That puts pressure on me, you know? So I mean, I think it's good for me as a player to win those kind of matches like yesterday, but as a person, I think it kind of plays on my confidence a litte. I hope that made some sense!".

She overcame Venus Williams easily in the first round and upset 6th seed Silvia Farina Elia in the 2nd. She is still in the doubles draw, winning her first doubles match with good friend, Anastassia Rodionova.
"I'm pleased with the way I played this week. Hopefully I can have a great week and go far in the tournament!"

Chevina Oct 6th, 2005, 11:43 AM Myskina overcomes powerful Dokic in three sets, to advances to quarterfinals.
http://www.espnstar.com/photo/1106035674447myskina_180105.jpg
Russian Anastasia Myskina clenches her fist after claiming during her three set win over Jelena Dokic.
Russian fourth seed Anastasia Myskina won her fifth LTT match on the tour, following a three set battle over Serbia's Jelena Dokic tonight.
The 24 year-old had no troubles early on in the match, breaking her junior opponent in the opening game and continuing her impressive performance to close out the set 6:3.
However in the second set, Myskina's fresh opponent had vastly gained confidence and was hitting the ball with a great deal of power. Dokic then went on further, capilising off a satisfactory Myskina who could barely return most of Dokic's supurb groundstrokes and closed out the second set in a tiebreak.
The final set tested both determination and skill- in which the competition really heated up when the score finally arrived at 2:2. Myskina was cleverly moving the Serbian around the court and began to open up her game and produce some tricky shots in difficult situations, such as when Dokic serve-and-volleyed at 2:2, 15:30 ... the Russian grinded and punished a forehand winner, setting up break point opportunities. This later proved the deciding factor for the outcome of the match. Myskina went on to break and held in front for a 6:3, 6:7, 6:3 victory. Anastasia Myskina now heads into the semifinal against Croatian Karolina Sprem.
"I was enjoying myself out there, today. She was making me work very hard, and you know. I played very well, and I'm very happy right now to be the winner! These past two weeks have told me a lot about myself ... normally I just come out on a match and I'm underconfident ... you know, I always expect my opponent to make the first move and then I try and work on that. But today and several matches I played last week in Tokyo have really boosted my confidence level and my mentality, and I've been able to predict my opponents and work my own way into a point, instead of waiting for the opponent to give me the opportunity. I'd say I have become much more attacking in matches, yeah.
Tomorrow I just have to think positively, and remember that it's just a tennis match. If I lose, I lose. But I'm hungry for the win, you know ... it'll be a battle, that's for sure".

In other news, Belgian Kim Clijsters took out compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne in straight sets. The fifth seed too strong for Henin-Hardenne, sealing the match 7:5, 6:3. If both Clijsters and Myskina are to advance tomorrow, they will set up in what should be a tremendous match. Good luck both Kim and Anastasia tomorrow!

http://cache.wtnphotos.com/3103/21238838160clijsters.jpg
Justine Henin-Hardenne put up some seriously brave resistance on Thursday but was ultimately unable to prevent Kim Clijsters from advancing to the Quarterfinals of the Qantas International.
Going into the match, there were reports of Clijsters suffering from a wrist injury and enduring a few sleepless nights due to the pain.
But there was nothing sleepy about Fifth seeded Clijsters as she scored her second consecutive Quarterfinal appearance on the LTT after she used her superior power to blast past her Belgian rival to complete a 7-5, 6-3 win.
The score line was somewhat harsh on Henin-Hardenne though, who chased down virtually every ball and exchanged some incredible rallies with Clijsters.
"It was nice match. The first set was very close. I just wanted to finish it off."
"Justine started to make a lot more mistakes late in the second and that really helped me alot." said Clijsters
Later that afternoon, Clijsters hit the courts once again, with friend and Doubles partner Angela Haynes. It was another straight sets victory for Clijsters today, who beat newcomers J.Jankovic/L.Safarova 6-3 7-6(1).

Monica Seles blasts a backhand to Na Li of China. Seles won 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Sydney: Eighth-seeded Monica Seles took advantage off Na Li's second serve and pounded her way to a 6-2, 6-3 win in just under an hour. Seles never faced a breakpoint and broke Na four times to close out the win. Seles later on spoke to the press about how pleased she was with her comeback to the LTT. "It's a pleasant surprise. Coming back, I didn't expect much and now to earn back-to-back quarterfinals is just great. I'm quite satisfied with my level of play.", Seles said with a smile.
Seles will take on unseeded Lucie Safarova in the quarterfinals. Safarova stunned third-seeded Anna Kournikova 7-6, 6-2. Seles, who lost to Kournikova last week in the quarterfinals in Beijing made it clear that she won't be taking Safarova lightly. "She's a very talented player and I consider her to be a real threat. She played an amazing match against Anna and anything can happen tomorrow. I lost to Anna last week in the quarters, so I'm hoping to improve upon that result.", Seles said.

Beijing Finalist and second seeded Russian teen princess, Maria Shyperova crushed American, Serena Williams 6-1 6-1. The 18-year-old raced through the first set in only 20 minutes, with her opponent looking overwhelmed by the occasion, with Shyperova scoring 14 winners. Shyperova needed barely longer in the second set despite a brief fightback from the American, however, a ruthless Shyperova safely served out the match and claimed victory with a forehand winner on her second match point.
"Maria knew it was going to be an easy match today. Even though Maria was playing three sets yesterday, however Maria doesn't have fats like the overweight whore. Maria can play ten hours and still be ready for the next match."
"Hingis and Pornikova have lost already? Seriously though, Maria is not even THAT surprised. There can be only one QUEEN in LTT and that Queen is Maria. Maria Shyperova."
Next, the princess will face the young Serbian, Ana Ivanovic who upset Canadian, Stephanie Dubois. "Ana is going to be tough opponent. Her coach was one of the best last season, so Maria is going to play 2% better compared today to ensure a ticket to the semifinal."

Past & Future
Sydney, Australia - Two weeks left before the first Grand Slam of the season and the tour is already undergoing change.
Miss Martina Hingis, tour number one but not for long, lost in her opening match in an awfully familiar scoreline to her first loss as tour number one during LTT's first season after winning the Australian Open.
Just one week after claiming this season's first title in Beijing, Miss Hingis' 5-0 singles record has now been marred by Jelena Jankovic.
The scoreline was six game to three and a tie-break but a loss is a loss and Martina will in fact feel that next week when the updated rankings are released. Nevertheless, the upset has not in fact caused quite as much grief as expected.
"Of course I feel badly about losing. It was humiliating to say the least but I happen to believe that losing a fight is not as important as coming back to fight more. I will be back next week, lower in the ranking but I don't need that to survive. Put a racquet in my hand, place me in a court and create opposition. I'll live."
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/Maatreiya/sydloss.jpg
Meltdown Moment.
Maria Sharapova whom Martina defeated last week is the likely successor to the throne. Coached by former tour director The Felix, the young Russian destroyed most recently Serena Williams of the United States.
"She is worthy. We went around the tournament grounds and chatted. Arrogant but she at least backs it up and succeeds. I can never do that. I'm more tentative these days with what I say. Yeah, yeah, being Director of Authority before was more fun but I'm here now, in this position again where I'm making my own future. All I can really say is I've had that time at the top. It's received its checkmark on my list and Maria is quite welcome to it or any other player. It's time to focus on adding titles to my collection instead."
Jelena Jankovic meanwhile lost her next match to Dinara Safina then in the doubles with Lucie Safarova.
"I expected her to go farther than that. Ah well, she'll learn. Maybe."
When asked to analyze said loss to Jankovic, Miss Hingis could only stare out the window.
"Everything was fine. Everything was steady. Not being overpowered. Not being outplayed. It was a normal situation. A normal situation. A normal situation. Normal......."

Q. Your next opponent, Karolina Sprem is another new player to the tour this week. How are you feeling, heading into today's match?
"Well you know, I don't know much about her. She's had a very good week, I mean I see she has beaten Groenefeld, Haynes and now Svetlana so ... I mean, I really don't know what to expect. I'll just head into the match, and play my game, you know".

An interview with:
JELENA JANKOVIC
THE MODERATOR: Questions for Jelena, please.
Q: Tough loss today, Jelena.
JJ: Of course, you know, any loss is tough but I think that Dinara played great and really fought hard. After the second set I felt kind of tired. So, you know, I guess I need more better conditioning.
Q: And in doubles too.
JJ: Yes, in doubles. It doesn't matter as much. Plus, we played an excellent team.
Q: What will your next event be?
JJ: I haven't really decided on, you know, my next tournament. Whatever my ranking allows. Most likely Wellington, I don't think I'm, you know going to have enough ranking points to get into main draw for a bigger tournament yet.
Q: How do you think you played today?
JJ: I think that I fought, you know, well. But in the end Dinara just was out hitting me and there was really nothing I could do. She's a great player, full of potential.
Q: 38 winners and 49 unforced errors. 5 aces and 5 double faults.
JJ: Yeah, you know, I didn't play my best, obviously. The score kind of shows that.
Q: What do you take away from this tournament?
JJ: Well I definitely played some fine tennis in the early rounds. I am actually disapointed in myself because I wanted to, you know, get another win after Hingis but, umm, I feel that I did play well. I mean, I've never played a professional match on the LTT before so 2 wins is really, you know, satisfying.
Q: How is your confidence right now?
JJ: At the moment, you know, just walking off the court it is not the best. But I am aware of what I have accomplished this week so next week I think I will be regarded as a dangerous floater, no?
Q: Thank you for your time.
JJ: Thank you very much.

Chevina Oct 7th, 2005, 09:11 AM Myskina passes Sprem, travels to second consecutive semifinal.
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2004-11/29/xin_1101021814268773117714.jpg
Myskina struggled at the early stages of the match, before the Russian turned the match around after taking the first set.
Anastasia Myskina has advanced through to her second consecutive semifinal, following another three set victory, this time over Croatian Karolina Sprem.
"I don't know how I did that [laughter]! I really don't. I'm ecstatic right now. It really was a good match indeed".
Q. Your next opponent is a friend of yours, I believe. Kim Clijsters- what are you thoughts on her?
"You know, I can't really tell at the moment. I'm feeling fine, still fresh. I'm certainly looking forward to it. Win or lose, I'm happy to lose to her, and I'm happy to be here- this far in the tournament.
Q. All the semifinalists last week are now out, except you. Do you feel you're the best player on the tour at the moment- or the most consistent?
"Oh no, not at all. No. I mean, the other girls- Maria, Martina and Anna all have very tough draws this week. I think have had a tougher draw this week also, but I like I said last week, I really didn't expect to make it this far in a tournament. So I don't feel at all like I am the best player around. No, not at all".
"I think I'll go to bed early tonight; get some extra rest before tomorrow's match. I am looking forward to it!"

Sydney - Fifth seeded Kim Clijsters dropped just three games as she charged to a place in the semifinals of the Qantas International on Friday.
No. 5 seed Kim Clijsters wasted no time in advancing to the semifinals of the Qantas International on Friday morning. Playing on centre court, Clijsters needed just 42 minutes to defeat Russian Dinara Safina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Clijsters was an easy winner at the Sydney International Tennis Centre. Fifth-seeded Kim Clijsters lost just three game as she booked her place in her first ever LTT Singles Semifinals.
The win was a welcome boost for Kim, who has been struggling with left wrist problems for much of the past week. Clijsters who is ranked at World Number 5, also reached the Quarterfinals at Beijing last week.
Clijsters next faces, 4th Seeded Russian, Anastasia Myskina in the Semifinals.
"I'm looking very forward to our match, she's a very good friend and she started the season off really really well and she's very confident. Its going to be a difficult task, but im ready to give 300%" said Clijsters.

"I'm absolutely delighted with my results. I was pretty happy when I got my first win but the reach the semi-finals in both events is really a bonus! I'm very satisfied with my results and hope to have a good match with Lucie tomorrow!"

iPatty. Oct 7th, 2005, 09:28 PM http://www.sport.be/fotospecial/fotos/1747/schnyder.jpg
Patty Schnyder sat down to reflect on her past two tournaments.
You know, I think its really hard when you have only won one match on the tour. I mean I went out in the first round of singles in both tournaments and I won one match in doubles in the first one.
Going out the way I did to Maria in Beijing was just embarrasing. And on top of that, to have her call me a bitch, it just destroyed me emotionally. I hope I get to play her again. Some of the fans screamed out "BITCH,BITCH,BITCH!" during both of my matches here. It is just really hurtful when someone says those things to you.
This week, against Flavia, I was up a set, but she played too well in the second set. I was up a break in that third set when the bitch chantings started. It tore me apart. When Ksenia and I lost 6-2, 6-0 to Dinara and Catalina, I was so shocked. We were the eighth seeds and we had an OK draw.
I hope that I can win one match in singles before the Australian Open so that I can know the feeling. I just need some thing to get me going.
I have been really impressed with the ladies that have won. There have been some incredible matches. I think I'm going to stick around for the semifinals just to see who wins. I haven't really made any friends on the tour yet except for Ksenia Palkina. She was so kind to play doubles with me. We have both had a very rough start to this tour.
I think people are intimidated by me because of my reputation as a bitch. Maria will pay one day for the pain she has caused me...
Chevina Oct 7th, 2005, 10:06 PM Aww, that's horrible, Patty. Good luck re-bounding next week! :yeah:.

Lucie has had a very impressive debut to the LTT taking out two old skool top ten players (3)Kournikova & (8)Seles in reaching the final. Ivanovic also shook up the seeds, by defeating Beijing Finalist, (2)Sharapova in straight sets & a battling three-setter against (6)Farina-Elia. Both players fought hard in this match, but it was Safarova who came out on top with some attacking play forcing Ivanovic to make the errors.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/39791000/jpg/_39791099_kimana_getty_245x245.jpg
It was all smiles as the match had finished, with both players congratulating each other on their performances.
Anastasia Myskina kept Russian hopes alive for capturing the country's first LTT tour title this morning, as the 24 year-old ended the tremendous run of good friend Kim Clijsters. The pair exchanged breaks and winners in a terrific match, setting up in what turned out to be the match of the day for the semifinals.
"I really can't believe I am here. My matches seem to be getting better and better. I just can't believe my success on the tour, at all. Really, I didn't expect to be in the semifinals last week, let alone a final this week. It really is surreal ... it's unbelievable. I love this feeling.
Today was very tough. I mean, it's always tough when you are playing a really good opponent like Kim, but it's even tougher, I think, when you are playing somebody you know well or are close with. So it was difficult for both of us, I think. However I do feel that both of us played our very best today, and I guess that's what happens when you really want to win.
Sure it was tough, you know. I know I, at least tried to put our friendship aside and just focus on beating her, but you know, it was really tough. To be the victor of this match ... you know ... I'm sure you can't comprehend how happy I am right now.
Also I just want to find the time to thank the great crowd who showed up to watch this match today. I don't think either of us could have played half as well without you guys getting behind us. Also, I just want to say "hi" to Patty who I think is somewhere out there and also to Venus. It was great having you guys watching my match today, and thanks so much for all your encouragement! ... I guess this has turned into a victory speech [laughter] hopefully I get the chance to do a proper one tomorrow. But who knows? You know, I'm just happy to be here."

Munchen Oct 8th, 2005, 09:14 AM Clijsters upset by Myskina
http://cache.wtnphotos.com/610/12003-syd9.jpg
Sydney, Australia - Russian fouth Seed Anastasia Myskina caused a semi-final upset on Saturday, ousting Belgium Fifth seed Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5 at the LTT Qantas International.
From the beginning of the match, Clijsters came out very flat after playing five sets of tennis on Friday, Clijsters fell behind 0-4, winning just five points along the way. Three separate cries of "c'mon Kim!" from fans in the stands seemed to wake up the Belgian, who hit some very strong groundstrokes in breaking Myskina to level the first set back even @ 4-4. Just as quickly as she got back into the set, Clijsters put herself in trouble, committing five unforced errors to give Myskina the first set 6-4 after 44 mintues.
In the second Kim Clijsters game only briefly caught fire, as she won 12 straight points to build a 5-1 lead in the second set, and for the rest of the match she struggled to find any rhythm. There was some consolation, though, in her defeat; it means she can rest before competing in Canberra next week.
"I know if I have to beat Myskina, I have to play my best tennis and I didn't. I felt a little bit tired, I think, and maybe not as fresh as I should have been. Myskina really stepped up and played neat tennis." said Clijsters.
In the Final, Myskina will face unknown Lucie Safarova.
"I'll definately be watching and cheering for Anastasia, she deserves to win this title."

Chevina Oct 9th, 2005, 12:14 AM Myskina takes Sydney title.
http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/Myskina-2_3388_rx.jpg
Anastasia Myskina, 24, celebrates after claiming her first LTT title in Sydney today.
Anastasia Myskina today celebrated her first career title on the LTT tour, defeating young newcomer, Lucie Safarova in a three set thriller. The Russian who defeated the likes of Flaiva Pennetta, Jelena Dokic, Karolina Sprem and Kim Clijsters enroute, started strongly against her Czech opponent. The fourth seed continued her display of hitting the ball with great strength and cleanliness and eventually broke her teenage opponent to maintain a 4:2 lead in the opening set.
However, Safarova who came from big upsets over Anabel Medina-Garrigues, fellow young gun Sesil Karatancheva, third seed Anna Kournikova, eighth seed Monica Seles and Serbian suprise Ana Ivanovic- created her own style of tennis and fought back, overpowering Myskina to level back at 4:4. Safarova managed to maintain her ryhthm, and simply overpowered her Russian opponent with a immense display of winners.
The second set provided just as high-standard tennis, as Myskina clawed her way back into the match and went up another break, this time at 3:1. Myskina was able to work her opponent around the entire court, and it was quite possible that Myskina wore the Czech out with her big, solid strokes. The fourth seed Myskina dropped just a game from then on, to set up a third and deciding set- taking the second 6:2.
Both Safarova and Myskina were upholding the same level of play they had previously flaunted, as the third set turned into an intense contest. Safarova began mixing a few things up, as she began to approach the net more frequently. This somewhat confused Myskina, since she was not able to exploit her normal groundstrokes off the firm and thorough volley's Safarova was now achieving. The Czech went on to break the Russian, to a 2:1 lead in the final set- a crucial break at an important stage of the match.
However, Myskina wasn't down and out just yet. At the change of ends and during the break, Myskina was pumping herself up, speaking Russian in order to encourage herself. In the next game, a switch suddenly seemed to have been turned on inside Myskina's head, as she battled her way back into the match, executing and yielding some purely marvellous tennis.
Myskina then went on to break Safarova, and held her own serve to lead 4:6, 6:2, 3:2.
In the sixth game of the final set of the tournament, Safarova's inexperience began to show. She double-faulted on 2 occasions, setting up and easy opportunity for her Russian opponent to go up a significant break. As likely as it seemed, Myskina did in fact break, only to be broken back due to the return of Safarova's power. Indeed, what a terrific turn-around from the teenager.
Safarova overcame her nerves to equalise the match at 4:4.
At 4:4, it's fairly normal for two final debutants to feel the pressure. Nevertheless, both these players had one thing in mind, and that was to win. Myskina commenced her service game with an ace down the centre line. She then added a backhand winner to the list, raping the ball with strong force and holding her serve to 5:4.
Myskina could do none other than applaud her opponent as she set forth her service game just as heartily. Safarova put much topspin on the ball, which appeared to construct the point well for her.
5:5 now, with neither player wanting to lose this gripping match.
Myskina again served effectively out-wide, buliding the point with her own game. She proceeded with this useful tactic, however was threatened on her serve, due to the power of the Safarova backhand. Yet Myskina went on to gain the upper hand, in what became visible as her last service game on the tournament.
At this stage, both Myskina's coach, mother, managers and fellow LTT players Patty Schyder, Kim Clijsters and Angela Haynes were all getting behind the Russian who simply couldn't hold back a grin. The final game of the match was utterly successful for the fourth seed Anastasia Myskina, though obviously disappointing for young teenager Lucie Safarova. Safarova just couldn't seem to do much more, while Myskina managed to close out the match with an execution of Safarova's serve, punching the ball cross-court for another winner.
This victory celebrated the first title for Russia on the LTT tour, while it claimed the first title for Anastasia Myskina likewise.
Q. Congratulations, Anastasia Myskina!
Qantas International champion, here in Sydney! What a match it was today.
"Thank you."
[applause]
"Yes, it really was a really tough match. There wasn't anything she could do wrong. I think she played very, very well, not only today, but the whole week, you know.
[applause]
"I just can't explain how I'm feeling right now. I did not expect at all to be the winner of this tournament. I really didn't, you know. So it's just so amazing.
Q. I'm sure your coach would be pretty pleased with how you've done this week?
"Oh yes, he's been so great with me these past two tournaments, you know. I couldn't have done it without him. No way. So thanks a lot to Sam!
Also thanks to all the players who got behind me this week. It felt even better to have you guys as friends, rather than winning something like this. So big thanks to Patty (Schnyder), Kim (Clijsters), Monica (Seles), Ana (Ivanovic), Sonya (Jeyaseelan), Venus (Williams) ... you know, there's just so many people that helped me so much with my confidence this week".
Q. With the new LTT rankings out tomorrow, I believe you have a big chance of being number one now.

"Well of course that would be the biggest achievement of my life. I would really hope so. But you know, we just have to see! And if not, then that's not so bad!".
"Umm ... I want to congratulate Lucie on a great week also. You really have suprised everyone this week, and I think you're a big star for the future, really. I hope you're not too disappointed after today, because I'm so sure you will make many more finals to come".
