Women's pro event arrives

Seven top-100 players will be in River Oaks field

By DALE ROBERTSON
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

The idea germinated quickly, really just since the U.S. Open, but the big-picture plan is long term. River Oaks Country Club didn't get into women's tennis thinking this week's tournament would be a one-shot deal.
The club's first-ever stand-alone women's pro event starts Tuesday — qualifying began on Saturday — and features a $50,000 purse, enough to attract seven top-100 players. Amy Frazier, currently ranked 77th in her 15th season on the WTA Tour, will be seeded first. None of the 22 women who received direct entry into the draw is ranked outside the top 200, according to River Oaks' director of tennis, Van Barry.

Because Barry ran three of these USTA Challenger tournaments when he was working in Florida years ago, he was already a known quantity when the circuit began searching for a new site to replace one in North Carolina.

"I took the idea to the club, and we decided to give it a go," Barry said. "It's a perfect time of year for tennis in Houston, and we have the infrastructure in place. Everybody felt it was a great idea with very little downside."

The USTA even covers a significant portion of the overhead.

The club plans day sessions starting at 10 a.m. during the week and evening sessions starting at 5:30 p.m. A grounds pass for the entire event will cost $30, a reserved seat $100.

A long time ago, River Oaks held a small women's event in conjunction with its venerable 71-year-old men's tournament, but there hasn't been truly big-league women's tennis in Houston since the WTA pulled out in the mid-1990s. This tournament doesn't quite qualify, but it's arguably a Class AA event, and the current field seems the equal of most of the circuit's $75,000 events.

With the WTA having no fall presence in the United States, American players of Frazier's caliber are more inclined to stay stateside and play for less money, in exchange for convenience.

"The fans are going to be amazed at how good these players are," Barry said. "The competitiveness will be awesome."

However successful the event proves, Barry said the club is in the men's tennis business to stay. The River Oaks International in April will remain a non-ATP exhibition for the foreseeable future.

That's okay. I've been around for a long time but very rarely post. And, I have been a pretty grouchy turd in the past. (Plus, I sorta inadvertantly made everyone think I was cheating at one of the games in the games forum and pretty much went into seclusion.) So, don't worry about feedback or reps or whatever. I just come here to get results first since you guys seem to get everything about a year before wtatour.com or any other site. I just thought I could return the favor since I had some free time at the office today.

Anyway, sucks about Lee-Waters. I saw her beat Granville at the Family Circle Cup and it really looked like she was getting back into top 50 form. If she's pregnant like some are saying, I wonder if she'll even bother to try her hand at another comeback to the tour? It's good to see Gambale advance, though. She seems to have a lot of potential... as does Glatch. Could be an interesting 2nd round matchup against Frazier for her here.

Yeah...i mean she is 28 years old...it would be really tough for her to come back again. But you never know... :D

If i am not mistakin the usual cut off for Ausie Qualies is around #250. Vania and Alexa are all within the top 230 with no points to defend till next year. I also think Mary will be ranked around #235 with her win today. So they all should be good to go :worship: :D

Im not positive but i think Aussie qualies cutoff is usually around 220. Most of there wcs come from below qualies cutoff and the qualy field at RG, WIMBY , and Aussie Open are smaller than the usopen where the qualy cutoff is usually around 250. TBE would probably have the answer to this though.

Amy!!! 12 games lost in three matches. That's damn good for her even if it is a 50K. Nice to see she's holding her game together over several matches. Hopefully she can carry this form into Quebec and all of 2006.

BTW, Maureen and Anne got slammed last night, losing to Perianu and Tsoubanos 6-3 6-0. Good luck in your next event Anne :)

Just called...

Frazier d. Mattek, 6-4, 6-1
Perianu d. Sromova, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3

And, Haynes/King are currently in the third set. Ashley/Bachmann has yet to start.

Thanks! I don't think Ashleys match starts untill 5:30..so thats a little under 2 hours.
So we should have full results in about 4 hours

This Anda Perianu is an excellent player, her win loss record this year is 54-15 and she has got her ranking in the top 250 after starting the year at 631. She is 25 years old and from Romania. She has won 4 10K's this year and reached the final of a 25K and now a 50K. This year has beaten players like Avants, Ashley, O'Donoughue, Sequera, Johansson, King, Sromova and De Los Rios. She could maybe get herself in the top 100 next year.
