Well...after seeing this i know Amy wants to play atleast another year!! :woohoo: She will most likely play in 2 or 3 more of the ITFs this year to get her ranking up asmuch as possible. Amy only has about 25 points to defend from a 2nd rd showing in philly last year.

Melanie had a hip problem, check the She is Canadian thread, Trent Rezor explained it pretty well.

BTW, Last year, Albuquerque was the feed-up for Quebec city. Stephanie Dubois got it after losing in the final to Marissa Irvin, who entered directly in the main draw here :wavey:

I just looked at the OOP. The only MD matches that are going on tomorrow are

Frazier vs. Gambale
Riske d. Snyder
Lee-Waters d. Glatch
Brandi d. Ospina

The only days I could go watch are Tuesday or Thursday and none of these matches look particularly competitive today except for Lee-Waters/Glatch.

I'm going to assume Frazier whoops Gambale and will go watch her on Thursday instead. Hopefully Cory Ann and Mo win their matches as well. They're both doable.

I guess these results show that Frazier & Brandi made the right decision to drop down to Challenger level this week to get some matches in - surprised they both struggled so much. I'm pleased to see Tara Snyder winning too.

Does anyone know what the problem with Lindsay Lee Waters is? She started the year so well yet has been horrible for a long time now. Is there an injury or just a total loss of confidence?

Lindsay has had an ankle injury for quite some time - stemming back to before the loss to stevenson this summer.

I don't know if that contributed to her loss yesterday though - she hasn't played more than 1 match per week in quite some time and has had a month off prior to this match. I'd think if she's coming back in Ashland she would be 100% healthy but maybe not.

Other than that lindsay has the game to get back to the top 50, its just a matter of putting it together - in my opinion it has a lot to do with her mental and strategic approach to matches

Ditto.

Who the FUCK is Mihaela Buzarnescu?! And how did she just take a set off Amy Frazier and stretch her like that?! Leanne Baker kicked her ass 6-3 6-1 in the 1st round of Alberquerque qualies last week. The good thing is that Amy has won two consecutive matches for the first time since January, but she really needs to pick it up. This may not even be enough to get past Perianu.

Tara :) Keep it up girl.

Julie :( A beatdown in front of her home town.

Cory Ann!!!!! :) Keep it up! You can beat Kristina! She should be back inside the top 250 with this result or close to it. After October she's got exactly 5 points to defend until May. She could hopefully make AO qualies and start pushing her way inside the top 200 beyond. It would be a nice little middle finger to the USTA.

Lilia <HUGE eye roll> what are you doing out there? I'm willing to bet she stopped working on her fitness and weighs 200 pounds again...

I unfortunately was obviously not able to go to Ashland today. I had to take a test and give a presentation and there was no way I could get out of it. Depending on who is playing and how I do in my tournament this weekend, I'll make a drive down for the finals. If Amy, Tara, Mo or Cory Ann are in the finals for singles and/or doubles I'll take a trip.

</HUGE>

I'm pretty sure they did. Cory Ann didn't recieve a single wild card this year and hasn't gotten one since the summer of 2004. She had 2nd round qualie points to defend this year at the US Open and didn't even throw her a bone there. They stopped giving her free coaching last year as well. Her father now coaches her exclusively.

I think the US Open situation was the kick in the ass she needed though as she's now started producing consistent results. Back to back challenger quarterfinals is really solid for her, so let's hope she can take it one step further and beat Kristina tomorrow. If she manages that, then the finals would definitely be in reach :)

But during this week's $50,000 Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Tennis Classic, they were house guests of Dr. Jerry Mayer and today they're squaring off in the championship match at the Ashland Tennis Center.

Tongsalee and Brandi will meet after the doubles championship match that starts at 1 p.m.

"We're staying at the same house and we've hit some together," Tongsalee said. "It should be fun."

Brandi, the No. 2 seed and a veteran of several Challenger tournaments in her career, will have experience on her side. Tongsalee, a surprise finalist who came into the tourament ranked No. 333, is playing in a championship for the first time.

"I've never played her and never seen her play," Brandi said. "This is the first week I've come across her. But I can tell she's good. All these girls out here are good."

Brandi defeated Tara Snyder 6-1, 6-4 in the first match on Saturday morning and then watched Tongsalee surprise top-seeded Amy Frazier 6-3, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Tongsalee was trying not to let nerves spoil potentially the biggest win of her young professional career. Frazier, a veteran on the pro tour, seemed unfazed by a giant deficit and was coming back.

Frazier, who was leading 3-2 in the first set, almost unexplainably lost nine consecutive games to put herself in a 6-3, 5-0 hole.

But patiently and surely, Frazier rallied back to within 5-4 and was serving with a chance to tie the second set after saving a pair of match points.

Tongsalee, who played brilliantly and aggressively to take the lead, never panicked - even after having a match point overruled by chair umpire Jim Morrin.

"I tried not to think about it," she said. "I just kept hitting it back."

Tongsalee, a 25-year-old from Thailand, eventually held on when Frazier hit one deep on the replayed point, securing the victory that was much closer than it looked like it was going to be.

"I was nervous," Tongsalee said. "I was just trying to hit the ball back as much as possible and not try for winners so much. She's a good player. At the beginning of the second set, I was keeping the ball back. But she started to hit it better."

Frazier seemed to be in good shape early in the match, leading 3-2 when back-to-back points put her in a tailspin that she couldn't stop.

Frazier seemed affected by a blazing noon sun that was blistering on Court 1. But her rally from a 5-0 deficit had the crowd buzzing.

"If I was able to squeak out that game, who knows?" Frazier said. "She was playing unbelievable. I just kept trying until the last point. But she was the better player today."

The victory for Tongsalee was easily the biggest of her career. Frazier came into the tournament ranked No. 77 in the world. On Friday, Tongsalee eliminated 16-year-old phenom Alexa Glatch in the quarterfinals - a match that most considered a big upset.

"I think it's good for me to play the good players," said Tongsalee, who last weekend reached the finals of a $75,000 doubles tournament in New Mexico where she lost to Julie Ditty and Milagros Sequera.

The semifinals were played on a picture-perfect Saturday morning.

However, the day wasn't so perfect for Ditty, the hometown favorite. She and partner Stephanie Dubois, the No. 3 seeds, fell to Frazier and Teryn Ashley 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 in the doubles semifinals in the last match of the day.

Frazier and Ashley will play fourth-seeded Ahsha Rolle and Maria Fernanda Alves, a 6-2, 6-2 win over Beau Jones and Ana Perianu, in the doubles championship.

After losing 7-3 in the tiebreaker in the first set, Ditty and Dubois rallied to even the match. That set was highlighted by a spectacular eighth game that decided the set. There were 20 points, seven deuces and six set points before Ditty served out the winner.

In the decisive third set, Frazier and Ashley broke Dubois while leading 3-2. The third-seeded team never recovered.

Ditty was expectd to leave today for Troy, Ala., and another $50,000 event this week.

Brandi's match with Snyder was typical of her other triumphs this week. She stays back on the baseline, stays low and keeps her opponent on the run.

After easily winning the first set and leading 3-1 in the second set, Brandi saw Snyder fight back to tie it 4-4.

"I knew I had to keep fighting and hitting my shots," Brandi said. "It was tough. After it got 4-all, I had to put in some extra focus and concentration."

Brandi, who has played on the WTA Tour and is ranked No. 103 in the world, has had great success on the Challenger tournament level. Two years ago, she won eight consecutive Challenger events, a record for the series.

The steady-hitting Brandi, who hadn't played since the U.S. Open, said it's been good to get in matches this week.

"In these tournaments, I've always done well," she said. "They've been good to me. These are good for getting some confidence and getting tougher."

Brandi, 28, said she's more selective on her tournaments these days. She's playing this week in Troy, Ala., then in San Francisco and Houston before playing WTA events in Philadelphia and Quebec.

Brandi has enjoyed her stay in Ashland this week.

"I think it's been great," she said. "It seems like the people here are really involved. It's a nice climate for tennis."

Notes

Chair umpire Jim Morrin overruled a linesman on a match point in the semifinal match between Tongsalee and Frazier. The linesman called Frazier's shot on the baseline out but Morrin overruled and replayed the point. Tongsalee didn't argue the call. Earlier in the tournament, Morrin overruled another call on match point when Brandi was playing Diane Ospina. Brandi's winner was ruled out by the linesman but Morrin changed the call, keeping Brandi alive on a point that would have eliminated her. ... The champion in singles today will earn $7,315 while the runnerup gets $3,990. The champion team in doubles splits $2,660 while the runnerup team shares $1,425. ... Today's finals will be replayed tonight at 9 on Adelphia channel 25 with Dr. Jack Ditty and Jim Fuzy doing the color and play-by-play. Ohio University Southern Campus' electronic department is produing the event.

I'm impressed that Robbee has gone to the US by herself instead of usually staying in Asia. Glad it's paying off. :D

Great win in doubles for Amy, especially considering she's only played 1 womens doubles tournament in the last 2+ years! I hope she considers playing some more. She's easily good enough at it to get into the Grand Slams with some more tournaments.

The 25-year-old Thailand native finished off a career-changing week with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Kristina Brandi in the championship of the $50,000 Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Tennis Classic on Sunday at the Ashland Tennis Center.

Tongsalee came into the tournament a virtual unknown who was ranked No. 333 in the world. She left town with a check for $7,315 after winning her first singles title in a $50,000 event.

On the way to the finals, she also defeated Lilia Osterloh (No. 175), teen phenom Alexa Glatch (No. 238), top-seeded Amy Frazier (No. 77) and the second-seeded Brandi (No. 103).

Not a bad week's work.

"I'm surprised a little bit but I believe in myself," said Tongsalee, whose No. 333 ranking will soon be in her rear-view mirror. "I try to do my best."

Tongsalee and Brandi, both baseline players, waged a classic three-set championship match on a blistering hot and sunny day. Points were long and difficult to get for both players in a match that lasted two hours and 14 minutes.

In the end, Tongsalee's overall play was much more consistent than Brandi, who appeared to be a big favorite going into the finals.

"It was tough," Brandi said. "She played well but I'm a little disappointed in myself today. I could have done better. But she fought and played well."

Brandi had an uncharateristic14 unforced errors in the first set loss that had her fighting from behind all day. While she won the second set 6-2, the points were long and heat seemed to wear her down a little more.

Even though she didn't have to do it, the chair umpire gave the players a 10-minute break between the second and third sets because of the heat. It didn't seem to help Brandi.

"I felt real shaky at the beginning of that third set," she said. "My energy level was dropping. I couldn't eat so much. I got a Coke and usually that helps but it didn't so much today."

Tongsalee broke Brandi in the first game of the third set and then held serve to go ahead 2-0. Brandi fought back from behind again, tying it 2-2 before having her serve broken again.

Another break of Tongsalee's serve made it 3-3 but Brandi felled to hold in the critical seventh game.

Tongsalee never took anything for granted. She led 5-3 and Brandi fought back to 5-4 before Tongsalee served out for the victory in front of an appreciative crowd.

"Each match this week made me more confident," Tongsalee said. "I beat some good players this week. I feel very fortunate to have won here."

Tongsalee said the temperature, which reached into the high 80s, didn't bother her. "I get used to it," she said. "I'm from Thailand."

Brandi couldn't pinpoint why she didn't play better.

"I've played a lot of players," she said. "I should be able to adapt. I felt like I had a good week though. I fought today and I was proud of myself for that. I just need to sharpen up a little bit."

In the doubles final, Amy Frazier and Teryn Ashley easily defeated Ahsha Rolle and Maria Fernanda Alves 6-1, 6-4.

Frazier-Ashley scored the first 13 points of the first set to set the tone.

"The first set, they pretty much killed us," Rolle said. "We made a lot of unforced errors."

Frazier-Ashley, who defeated hometown favorite Julie Ditty and Stephanie Dubois in Saturday's semifinals, were a wild-card entry into the doubles. Frazier, 33, doesn't have a doubles ranking because she mostly sticks to singles.

"We were pumped," Ashley said. "We wanted to have fun. That was as good a first set as you can get."

Frazier and Ashley plan to play doubles together again in three weeks.

"There was a little bit of adjustment time but not much," Frazier said. "We knew each other pretty well so that helped."

Frazier and Ashley both said they enjoyed the semifinal victory on Saturday even though the crowd was very much pro-Ditty and Dubois.

"We kind of expected that going in," Ashley said. "We tried to block it out."
