I have just come back from Ibaraki 25K. I watched the match between Hye-Mi Kim vs. Soon-Mi Seo.

Yes, Kim is not an orthodox player. She uses a lot of back-hand slices and some wrist-snap forehand. Service motion is also a bit strange, too.

Nevertheless, she is a very consistent player and mentally tough. Mental toughness , as we know, is an important part of the sport.

In tennis, dozens of skills are involved in making a win.

Thus, Kim uses her mental toughness in offsetting some weakness. It is not abnormal that a player relies on his/her strenghth to offset his/her weakness. I enjoyed watching her unorthodoxical playing.

When Chris Evert was very young, a spectator of her practice said "She can never make it !", which proved wrong. Chris Evert was not a hard-hitter nor a very-talented player. But, her mental toughness and ball concentration are unbelievable. She is very smart, too.

Not to take offense, but saying Chris Evert was "not a hard-hitter nor a very talented player" is incorrect. Yes, Evert was mentally tough and had keen sense of anticipation. But that alone would have only carried her so far in the game. No one wins 18 grand slams without being talented. Evert had some of the best hand-eye coordination in the game, and was an uncanny mover about the court. Her footwork was possibly the best the game has ever seen. It's true that compared to today's hard hitters, her ground strokes were not as hard. However, at the time, she was generally thought to have very penetrating ground strokes, and played a heavy game. I'll admit that other players may have had more gifts than Chris, but her talent for the game -- both physical and mental -- ranks near the very top.

Akari--Maiko--Haruka

Haruka has no power but has technique so Akari maybe has same things.

I've seen Haruka Inoue play and it is bizarre...her serve is sooooooooooooooooooooweak and her groundstrokes are extremely limited. I think because she's a good fighter, quick and mentally tough she's been able to have success.....Hope Akari is a solid all-around player. Why did Maiko retire???
