DutchieGirl Nov 17th, 2008, 11:05 PM Blah again I had a decent week, but everyone had similar picks so I get diddly squat. :p
RR-87 Nov 17th, 2008, 11:21 PM it's getting closer in number one fight  :yeah:
thanks for update ;)
Brenda fan Nov 17th, 2008, 11:59 PM Tobi, are you still thinking about adjusting the rules at the end of the year? Coz I still think it is weird that you get no points for the person you pick, but the position? ... Think that may sound a bit cryptical... Let me explain with an example...
This week I picked Soler-Sola as RU in Mallorca. She won. So I think it makes sense that I would get half of the points from the people that predicted Soler-Sola as a winner, since I was close. But in stead I get nothing because no one had predicted Tochilovskaya as a winner. For some reason it still is odd to me (must admit: especially this week since Soler-Sola had only one prediction as winner:)
I think this game is about predicting how well a player does? And it makes more sense to get half of the points for the player you predicted to be a finalist, than half of the points for a player that you never mentioned?
I know more people have spoken about changing rules and I can't remember if it is on this part (and my computer is so darn slow today, that I can't be bothered checking it:) )
But maybe I'm the only one that is confused everytime he thinks he had a decent week? :)
Not complaining and if everything will stay the same I'm fine with that. When the rules may change at the end of the year, I'll nominate that part for change:)

It makes good sense to me. ;) I wonder if we are all gonna start at zero again next year? That'd be good too. :D

cheers! I had a hard time explaining, but I'm glad it makes sense and at least one person understands what I mean:lol:
Starting at zero is fine by me too...

tobi Dec 14th, 2008, 02:59 PM I am proud to announce latest standing of the Predict the Winner game.
Equus got the well deserved top spot.
Freakan got very close at the end but he was very secure at the 2nd place, another well deserved place.
Meelis was chasing after the podium for the majority of the game but finally he got there at the last few weeks, with consistently better weeks than me.
It is hard to mention all of the players who put such a good fight and made this game very interesting and and long lived as it is.
We arent stopping here but I am planning to make few adjustments and changes before beginning our campaign in 2009,first of all to clear all those points and start a new game to make all of our players contenders for the top spot, some of the gaps we are having is seriously unchaseable.
My plan is to have two charts - similar to WTA/ATP tour rankings, one entry ranking chart and one race chart, which will include only one year of points.

tobi the reformer :worship::lol:
tobi Dec 14th, 2008, 06:36 PM My thoughts about the ideas, part by part.
Maybe we should think of a If-she's-picked-you-can't-pick-anymore-rule? Or a If-you-picked-her-first-you'll-get-double-the-points-rule? The first option may be a bit too much for everybody, but the second might only be too much for Tobi?
Anyway, I like playing our game and I'll keep on looking at results and ods... :wavey:
This is an unmakeable idea.
My suggestions for the new season:
I think we should make this game simplier and more fair. One of the ways to do that would be to just get rid of DB. I've never been a fan of picking DB, even though I get a lot of points thanks to that, maybe we should just have another game for picking DB. Picking DB correctly doesn't have too much to do with "PREDICTING THE WINNER" IMO:)
I am neutral about this idea,I think we should ask about this to fellow players.
My 2nd suggestion is to award every correct pick of W/RU with 1 point, no matter how many posters picked W/RU correctly.
We are giving at least one point to every correct pick anyway
Picking as RU who was the W, and as W who was the RU should be awarded with 0,5 points.
Agree!! I think Frank should have had half of the points that the prediciton of the correct winner got for picking Wejnert... but let's leave it up to Tobi, I'm sure he'll come up with a good plan? ;)
I mean,I am with the idea of keeping this rule alive, you know, you are taking risks to pick such an unusual player as W/RU and you are geting your reward by taking 10 points,if you fail you should penalize for that in my opinion.
My idea is instead ;
"I am almost sure to defend an idea which I remember from few months back - to give extra points to posters who picked both winner and RU correctly, even though there is few winners at both.
For example 3 of the members picked the winner and 5 of them the RU and member "X" picked both winner and RU correct so our player will get (3.5 + 2) plus 5 for picking for both winner and RU correct."
I think the best solution would be for Tobi to gather the best ideas and make a public poll, so people would decide which game they wan to play:)
And then what? The people that don't get what they want will stop playing? Not sure about that plan
I think Tobi will go over all the ideas and will come up with his conclusion and we stick to that. After all he puts in all the work in this game, so I guess he is allowed to make the decision... Call me easy
1. This was only a suggestion.
2. It's better to know how posters want this game to look like. I don't think Tobi would like to wake up some day and realize that there are only 3 people playing PTW:p Everyone accepted rules of this game the way they were and noone was complaining so making a poll wouldn't hurt anyone. It just might be a good way to know how to get more people to play PTW.
Puting a poll up is thinkable but first of all I think we should come up with some ideas and comments like I am trying to open now.
But it made me think, being able to lose points might ad something extra to the game. For instance if your bagel prediction looses a match, or if your picks go out in r1?
It means too much work here :p
tobi Dec 14th, 2008, 07:09 PM I would suggest the 'max' points you can get with a 'pick as winner who was the runner up' or the other way around should be 5 points and then just divided by how many people have this 'pick as winner who was the runner up'. It should be kept apart from people who picked the right winner. So skip the dividing thing. :)
Well,it is thinkable.
Any more ideas about this?
Freakan Dec 14th, 2008, 07:28 PM We are giving at least one point to every correct pick anyway
And my suggestion is to give one point (and not more) no matter how many people picked the player. But I guess it's not a popular idea ;)
tobi Dec 14th, 2008, 07:39 PM And my suggestion is to give one point (and not more) no matter how many people picked the player. But I guess it's not a popular idea ;)
It isnt. :p
Andiyan Dec 14th, 2008, 08:14 PM I support Freakan's idea, and I also support skipping the DB thing. It's not fun anyway to predict that
You could do a joker pick instead,, which comes in to play if your picked player withdraws late.. which quite often happens..
Also I really hope my last suggestion will go through!! What's the use of the 'dividing thing' anyway.
And also, If you are the only one who picked a winner as Ru or the other way around correctly, and nobody picked that player as winner or RU, you should be rewarded with 5 points, in stead of 0,5 which is totally sad for what was a great pick!
_Equus_ Dec 14th, 2008, 09:24 PM Year End No.1 ranking for the second straight year. :sobbing::sobbing: I'm not giving my best since June and i was in an endless slump lately.
All credit to Freakan. :hatoff: But he especially kept taking risks during my long break. I think that is the key point which shaped the top of the rankings this season. He could have got the lead with a less risky way. ;)
I'm not sure about playing it next season. That's why i am not bitching around about the new rules/changements  I rather let tobi be a dictator
DutchieGirl Dec 14th, 2008, 10:46 PM  Looks like some rule changes for next year then.
I like the idea of people who pick the correct finalists getting more points though, because that really isn;t easy to do - even if they get the winner and Ru the wrong way round, I think they deserve a little more then.
Brenda fan Dec 15th, 2008, 12:21 AM I'm fine with skipping the QDB's & DB's as well, although that might mean that qualies aren't playing any role in the game anymore. So maybe you can pick two qualifiers and get a little reward if ur correct? A point per correct qualifier?
As for the rest.. oh... I actually forgot about the rest... have to re-read after posting this;)
Meelis Dec 15th, 2008, 12:26 AM And also, If you are the only one who picked a winner as Ru or the other way around correctly, and nobody picked that player as winner or RU, you should be rewarded with 5 points, in stead of 0,5 which is totally sad for what was a great pick!
Definitely.
Andiyan Dec 15th, 2008, 12:28 AM Qualies are not exciting enough for me anyway. Besides, weekends are already busy enough so I prefer nothing with Q-draw and maybe some extension of the game in the main draw.
Brenda fan Dec 15th, 2008, 12:29 AM got it all... I wouldn't like getting only 1 point for a correct pick.. it just seems so... little?
And I agree that if you picked a winner and she ended up being RU, you should get more than 0,5 point. After all you then were right about predicting the winner of half of the draw? Even if there are more players making that pick.
I also think it's a pity when the qualies are out completely, as mentioned in my previous post. Can't think of anything else than predicting 2 qualifiers, but maybe someone else has any suggestions?
As for the rest, I'm fine with whatever Tobi decides... :worship:
Brenda fan Dec 15th, 2008, 12:34 AM Qualies are not exciting enough for me anyway. Besides, weekends are already busy enough so I prefer nothing with Q-draw and maybe some extension of the game in the main draw.
 I sometimes like the qualies better than the maindraw
DutchieGirl Dec 15th, 2008, 12:36 AM Yeah it'd be nice to do something different with quallies, and not drop it altogether, but I agree with dropping DBs. Maybe picking 2 qualifiers is a good idea.
Andiyan Dec 15th, 2008, 12:41 AM You could also think of skipping the dividing thing totally. That might be a discussion cause it will expell 'risky-pick-playing' but it is more fair in terms of points.
The 'other dividing thing' where I talked about before was maybe not totally clear. I don't really know how to describe it otherwise. :p But it is mainly about what i said before about the 5 pts in stead of 0,5. It's totally unnecessary to calculate the scores of picking RU as W or W as RU through dividing the amount of points ppl got in the 'other section' of picking W or RU.
Another thing. I was secretly hoping we will be allowed next season to choose picks for W and/or RU AFTER a part of R1 has been played. This includes ONLY players who haven't played their R1 match yet. Players whose result is already up you cannot choose. This is mainly to make picking qualifiers for W/RU more easy and accessible.
Andiyan Dec 15th, 2008, 12:42 AM Yeah it'd be nice to do something different with quallies, and not drop it altogether, but I agree with dropping DBs. Maybe picking 2 qualifiers is a good idea.
Picking 2 qualifiers is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to easy.
DutchieGirl Dec 15th, 2008, 12:48 AM Picking 2 qualifiers is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to easy.
Well you come up with something better for quallies then. I agree the DBs should go, but I like to still have something to do with quallies. :p
Freakan Dec 15th, 2008, 12:51 AM You could also think of skipping the dividing thing totally. That might be a discussion cause it will expell 'risky-pick-playing' but it is more fair in terms of points.
I really support this idea. Espacially because it's much more fair. And if the rest of posters is against it, maybe there could be e.g. 5 points instead of 10 points to divide (and of course if one player picks correctly, he gets 5 pts instead of 10).
Andiyan Dec 15th, 2008, 12:58 AM Well you come up with something better for quallies then. I agree the DBs should go, but I like to still have something to do with quallies. :p
 I cannot think of anything exciting really. Maybe pick 1/2 seeded players that won't qualify or sth but that is practically undoable cuz lots of these draws dont have them. Or you pick the qualifier you think will reach the furthest in MD?
I really support this idea. Espacially because it's much more fair. And if the rest of posters is against it, maybe there could be e.g. 5 points instead of 10 points to divide (and of course if one player picks correctly, he gets 5 pts instead of 10).
Thanks that is exactly what i mean :)
Brenda fan Dec 15th, 2008, 01:47 AM Or you pick the qualifier you think will reach the furthest in MD?
I guess Tobi will find that a bit too time consuming (imagine him going through all those qualie-picks and see where they ended up in a week when there are 10 tournaments:lol:)
I know it maybe easy to pick to players to qualify, so that's why I suggested to have a little reward; you could make it even 0,5 point per correct prediction? But that way at least the qualies are still in the game. Can't think of anything else, but I'll sleep over it;)
Just thought of something else, because of what Tobi said about the wta-like scorelist... How about combining the 10k's and the other challengers into one big PTW-game? since most of us play both there seems no reason to keep them separated?
auntie janie Dec 15th, 2008, 02:21 AM How about combining the 10k's and the other challengers into one big PTW-game? since most of us play both there seems no reason to keep them separated?
:sobbing: I'm only interested in the 10K game. Less predictable, always new players coming out of nowhere -- 10K-world is a lot different from the world of the other challengers. I'm not able to play every week but the game is what keeps me in touch with the 10K scene and the names of the newest players coming along.
As for rule changes, I don't really care much what tobi decides; as long as there's some kind of 10K PTW game I'll try to play and try to stay in the top 20. :D
Jake Melburn Dec 15th, 2008, 07:32 AM I think predicting both, W and RU correct should be most valued, IMO with the most poitns, cause that`s basically the point of the game, to predict both, W and RU correct.
Brenda fan suggested some kind of penalty points, in case when your picks loose in first round or when your DB picks loose the match. I really like that idea and it gets my support.
Would not get rid of DB`s, but I see I`m in minority
James Dec 15th, 2008, 08:11 AM I don't like the idea of just awarding 1 point or 0,5 points. It makes the game too bland, there would be no incentive to do better at all.
I agree with awarding extra points to those getting both winner and RU right. And also with the point Andiyan made about the 0,5 and 5 points.
I am neutral on the DB's. If they go, I would like it if we did something with the qualifying at least, like Sarah said.
tobi Dec 15th, 2008, 10:29 AM Thanx for very positive feedback guys,it is really giving indiciation of what to do and how to do it.
tobi Dec 15th, 2008, 10:45 AM You could do a joker pick instead,, which comes in to play if your picked player withdraws late.. which quite often happens..
I am not supporting this.If you picked one player, thats it,win, lose, retire or withdraw you shouldnt change it in my opinion,it is just bad luck if that player withdraws and it is adding some dimension to the game.
And also, If you are the only one who picked a winner as Ru or the other way around correctly, and nobody picked that player as winner or RU, you should be rewarded with 5 points, in stead of 0,5 which is totally sad for what was a great pick!
I like the idea of people who pick the correct finalists getting more points though, because that really isn;t easy to do - even if they get the winner and Ru the wrong way round, I think they deserve a little more then.
got it all... I wouldn't like getting only 1 point for a correct pick.. it just seems so... little?
And I agree that if you picked a winner and she ended up being RU, you should get more than 0,5 point. After all you then were right about predicting the winner of half of the draw? Even if there are more players making that pick.
Seems like many of the players agree on this.
I'm not sure about playing it next season. That's why i am not bitching around about the new rules/changements
It would be great shame not see you competing.
So maybe you can pick two qualifiers and get a little reward if ur correct? A point per correct qualifier?
As you know it is especially easy to predict at many of the $10ks,so it is unmakeable.
Qualies are not exciting enough for me anyway. Besides, weekends are already busy enough so I prefer nothing with Q-draw and maybe some extension of the game in the main draw.
I think we still have something to play at qualies as well.

This includes ONLY players who haven't played their R1 match yet. Players whose result is already up you cannot choose. This is mainly to make picking qualifiers for W/RU more easy and accessible.
I am pretty clear about this actually,I am not planning to allow changes at these,if you want to pick a qualifier, you should take risks.
I really support this idea. Espacially because it's much more fair. And if the rest of posters is against it, maybe there could be e.g. 5 points instead of 10 points to divide (and of course if one player picks correctly, he gets 5 pts instead of 10).
I think 5 points is way too little. But for whole of the idea, for deviding,I choose to think a bit.
Just thought of something else, because of what Tobi said about the wta-like scorelist... How about combining the 10k's and the other challengers into one big PTW-game? since most of us play both there seems no reason to keep them separated?
They should be separated,at times they feel like they are two different games.
I don't like the idea of just awarding 1 point or 0,5 points. It makes the game too bland, there would be no incentive to do better at all.
Couldnt understand the point here, seems like all of the ideas made me confused
I am neutral on the DB's. If they go, I would like it if we did something with the qualifying at least, like Sarah said.
Yes,waiting for ideas about this guys.
tobi Dec 15th, 2008, 10:54 AM So far we decided on these then ;
1. To reset all of the points and start the game again.
2. To give extra points to posters who picked both winner and RU correctly, even though there is few winners at both.
For example 3 of the members picked the winner and 5 of them the RU and member "X" picked both winner and RU correct so our player will get (3.5 + 2) plus 5 for picking for both winner and RU correct.
3. An example chart with new ideas ;
10000$ Cartagena
Winner: Vivian Segnini (BRA)
points
X
Y
Z
3.5 points each
pick as champion up who was the runner up
Points:
L
M
2.5 points each
Runner Up : Marina Giral-Lores (VEN)
Points:
S
X
5 points each
(X is geting total of 3.5+5 and bonus 5 for picking both right = 13.5)
pick as runner up who was the champion
Points:
K
G
F
U
1.25 points each
1 player - 5
2 players - 2.5
3 players - 2
4 players - 1.5
5 players and more - 1
DutchieGirl Dec 15th, 2008, 11:33 AM In that case then, if you pick the winner and RU but the wron way round, can you get an extra 2.5 points? As it's also hard to do, but you weren;t 100% correct.
Andiyan Dec 15th, 2008, 03:14 PM Brenda fan suggested some kind of penalty points, in case when your picks loose in first round or when your DB picks loose the match. I really like that idea and it gets my support.
Oh yes I would love this too! Could maybe replace the DB? :)
tobi: I already think the chart with new rules is lots better and more fun :D

I am not against these but it would be good to see reaction of the fellow players.
germex Dec 16th, 2008, 02:54 PM I think Dutchie Girl suggestion on getting extra points for getting both finalists right is very good, I would like that.
On qualies it is very hard to come up with something as some 10K have just one round and half of the players have byes, I would probably keep the DBs instead, but I dont mind either way.
About penalty points I think the one about your winner pick losing on the first round would be good, but that would require a commitment to participate every week, otherwise not picking a winner sometimes could be better than picking one and having penalty points. So i guess that is something to think about.

Good point,I dont want any situation like this, picking a Winner/RU always should be better than not picking.
auntie janie Dec 16th, 2008, 11:23 PM I agree with germex; I wouldn't like to see penalty points.
I'm happy with DB points as they are, or with no DB points, or a some kind of compromise where we can pick just one Q and one MD DB, or 2 Q DBs and no MD DBs, or anything.
Love the idea of extra credit for those who correctly select both W and RU, and a smaller extra credit for selecting both but with the W & RU reversed; these are great ideas. :yeah:
polishprodigy Dec 16th, 2008, 11:28 PM I like penalty points ONLY in these instances:
Your Winner or Runner Up loses in the first round (-1 or 2 points)
Your double bagel pick gets double bageled (happened a couple of times to me, I thought it was so funny) (-1 or 2 points).
But I am nervous about the first penalty. You shouldn't be penalized for playing the game regularly. If I get penalized a lot, I might just avoid playing in certain instances to avoid losing points. For instance, who knows if Maria Fernanda Alves will win the 10k or lose in the first round due to her massive slump? You take the risk - you win, you win, you lose you lose but you shouldn't lose points for predicting.
I don't like how you don't get many points (depending on how many people pick a certain person to win) if you do an inverse prediction (W as RU and RU as W). I think that is when it happens, but for instance, if someone got 10pts for the pick, you get 5, but if someone got 1pt, you get 0.5. That one. Tobi help me out ;)
polishprodigy Dec 16th, 2008, 11:34 PM By the way, I like picking DB's. Sometimes it is very easy but sometimes it isn't! I find it my strongpoint too ;)
For instance, some double bagellers have been known to lose 6-1 6-0 or 6-1 6-1 lately, which doesn't give points! I think it adds a cool added dimension to the game that we would miss if we scrapped it.
tobi Dec 16th, 2008, 11:49 PM I'm happy with DB points as they are, or with no DB points, or a some kind of compromise where we can pick just one Q and one MD DB, or 2 Q DBs and no MD DBs, or anything.

I personally neutral about DBs,though if we cancel the part,I wont miss it.But if there is obvious two different thoughts about it,I can open a poll about it.

For instance, who knows if Maria Fernanda Alves will win the 10k or lose in the first round due to her massive slump? You take the risk - you win, you win, you lose you lose.
Thats also my reason about it,you know I will play every event possible and there is great chance that my picks will lose early in the event,so I shouldnt get penalized for it consistently.

Xian Dec 17th, 2008, 09:28 PM what I want to know:
Do you guys still want polls?
Do you look on the first page to have a look on the updated draws?
Is the info on page one, like info on the host city and the previous winners interesting for you?Seriously, tell me your opinions cause otherwise I wont spend so much time on doing all these stuff :wavey:
germex Dec 17th, 2008, 10:07 PM Xian.
I love those polls. The draws are very concenient to have on the first page; and yeah I find very interesting the info regarding tournament and host city.
Thanks for all your effort!

I personally and as a mod, have my answers.
*I still want polls
*I personally dont look into first pages but then I am very well into results of all events every day,so I cant answer neutrally.
*I dont know if you have to do detailed info about cities as you put but I am planning to not to allow any tournement threads without a first post who lacks updates and basic info about the event,at least like my threads or Meelis' threads on challenger section.
Thank you for your continuous work here on this section,it would be great if you can continue but if not, still I will continue to open threads with my basic, general style.
Andiyan Dec 17th, 2008, 10:11 PM Polls: they are nice, but they should not be included in the game. Lots of ppl take points who don't even care about the game at all
First page: I use the first page only when I need to look back for sth, not for updated results. I expect them to be posted in a separate new post so I can easily see if sth has been posted in the particular thread.
About the info: Host city information I dont care about a lot. If it won't come back next year and I want to know sth about the city/location I can easily find it myself. :)
Previous winners: Yes I love to see the previous winners of tournaments. Nice to see who won and who might defend her title. :)
Andiyan Dec 17th, 2008, 10:12 PM Oh and besides that Xian, thanks for all the hard work, it is much appreciated
tobi Dec 17th, 2008, 10:15 PM Polls: they are nice, but they should not be included in the game. Lots of ppl take points who don't even care about the game at all
I want this to continue. There are posters who are consistently playing the game with just voting on the poll.
Also it adds some surprise dimension to the game with surprise winners
Andiyan Dec 17th, 2008, 10:30 PM Yes. But they take part in the game without even knowing it. I was one of those persons over a year ago :p
But I don't really care actually. New scoringpointsrules make it better lots already!

Personally:
- I never use the polls
- I usually don't check the front page for updated results, coz someone usually already posted it in the thread so I read through the thread from the last post I read onwards
- I don't really look at the previous winners, but I like looking at the pics of the places. ;)
Hope that helps :wavey: :)
polishprodigy Dec 17th, 2008, 11:08 PM I like the polls, I don't use them anymore, but I agree they give additional winners which spices things up.
As for the updated draws on the first page, PLEASE KEEP THEM! Others may not use them, but I find them EXTREMELY valuable. I rely on Xian to keep the threads well organized. I don't like having to scroll through for updated draws, I scroll for live scores etc, quick updates etc. :)
Thanks Xian (and others) for your hard work in posting on the first page!

Hmm I never use the polls personally, but I don't really care if they are there or not. I just vote in my post, but if other people wanna vote in the poll, I don't care. Doesn;t affect me either way really. ;)
polishprodigy Dec 17th, 2008, 11:11 PM The city info I can live without, but I like seeing the previous winners portion!
polishprodigy Dec 17th, 2008, 11:17 PM What about my final decision about those points which I posted few posts before. (The example chart)
I still don't think the number of points I get for making an "inverse prediction" (predicting W as RU and RU as W) should depend on how many players predict the W and RU. I think you should have a set number of points for the number of players who make an inverse prediction that is less than the number of points for those players that make a correct prediction. But it all depends on how many people made that prediction.
Ie. 1 person picks W correctly: 10 points, 2 people pick it: 5 points
1 person picks W as RU: 5 points, 2 people pick it: 2.5 points
So, for instance:
Xian picks W correctly and is only one to do so: 10 points
Polishprodigy and Tobi pick W as RU: they both 2.5 p |
