It happens to me all the time, but that may be because I have an Internet Security program. I have to disable it to view avatars and smilies.

Do you have an ad-blocker installed? I think that if you block the banner ads on this site, it also blocks the smilies/avatars.

for me it is the firewall - when i turn the wirewall off then i can see all!
