THAT'S REALLY SAD!!!!!

for playing only in states, she will take all the points of 10k for sure and will be in top 100 in the end of june.

I hope she can changed this situation and play RG and Wimby :bounce:

GO VARVARA and win Charlottesville :hearts:

Well, the fact that Varvara can only play in the US is a joke. The girl could end up being outstanding. Her playing a $10K is just a free like eight points for her to get. Good luck Varvara!

Well I remember she played the canadian U18 championship last year or 2 years ago so maybe she lives in Canada, or in the US.

If she switched, then welcome Heidy. You are now the 8th best canadian player!

ETA. Yep, it's official, on the ITF sites she is now listed as canadian. I would like to know the story because I never read anything about her in the media here.

I wish Varvara best of luck. It must be a tough time for her. Never thought Uzbekistan would be a place she could claim asylum from, now I understand due to its political instability, but not one or two years ago. I guess we just are not aware of some alleged persecutions that are happening in some countries that may even be US friendly.

Nevertheless, did you read the guy's comment?
"I always thought immigration was supposed to help people," St. John said. "It's not like her mother is a Muslim. She's a Russian Orthodox, so it's not like she's coming to cause trouble. It just seems so unfair."

That seems a bit insulting to Muslims, but I'm sure he didn't mean it that way.

Ansley Cargill d. Ekaterina Afinogenova 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(10-8).

That's the score, anyway. But the match didn't end on an ordinary point - it ended on a penalty point. The Chair thought he heard a Russian word of some sort behind him so he called: "Coaching - Match Over!!". It was stunning! Kat was very likely to have made the tie-break 9-9 and then go on to win it (she had come back from 0-3 in the 3rd to lead 6-5).

The whole match seemed to be actually a bit biased somehow against Kat and for Ansley, although my explanation is an unconscious preference for the "local" over the "enemy". This was stunning too, as in watching hundreds of matches I have seen very, very few where there seemed to be credible evidence of bias.

Both players played very well. Kat had many "dumb" errors (and double faults) and many clear winners. Few of Ansley's errors were "dumb" and she had few winners. She was very good at returning excellent shots from Kat, though.

Both players won - tennis history lost. This should be known in the future as a Kat victory. Two years ago Ansley was ranked #90. This is her first final victory. This was Kat's first final (I think). Four years ago Ansley lost in the final here. Kat won 2 qualie rounds then lost in the final qualie round. It was her 2nd pro tourney. She was 14.

Let's go Kat! You're a player!

Ansley: maybe you should retire now on a "victory" - albeit a tainted one?

(By the way: I charted the entire match by point and will try to put a more detailed description of it up here in the next few days.)

Anyway: Ansley Cargill d. Ekaterina Afinogenova 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(10-8).

It went like this: 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 4-3, 5-3, 5-4, 6-4, 0-1, 0-2, 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, 3-5, 3-6, 0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 1-3, 2-3, 2-4, 3-4, 4-4, 4-5, 5-5, 6-5, 6-6, 0-1, 0-2, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4, 4-5, 4-6, 5-6, 6-6, 6-7, 7-7, 8-7, 8-8, 8-9, penalty - match over, 6-7.

In more detail: Ansley won the toss and elected to serve. A 2nd serve led to an error wide from Kat: 15-0. After a let serve Ans hit it long: 15-15. A 2nd serve led to a long lob return from Kat: 30-15. (These were probably points which went back and forth many times.) A winner from Kat made 30-all but 2 "kind-of" aces from Ans gave her the game: 0-1. (A "kind-of" ace is when there is contact made but it is hugely useless.) Kat faulted her 1st serve then all the rest in this game were 1st serves in. It went 0-15 (long), 0-30 (wide), 15-30 (winner), 30-30 (short), 30-40 (long), deuce (short), add-Kat (short), winner: 1-1. ("Short" means into the net.) Then Ans drew an error long, but a winner, wide error, winner, wide error, put Kat up a break: 2-1. (All Ans' 1st serves were in.) A 2nd serve then led to an error wide: 0-15, and a double-fault brought 0-30. A "kind-of" ace made 15-30, and a winner after a 2nd serve made 30-all. Two 1st serves in then brought a long (on a good point) and a short, and we were back on serve: 2-2. A good serve from Ans made a long for 15-0, then a long made 15-15. After a 2nd serve a winner made 15-30, then a "kind-of" ace made 30-all. A wide and a long (after a 2nd serve) made 2-3. Then it was 15-0 (winner), 15-15 (short), 15-30 (long), 30-30 (winner), 30-40 (long), deuce (short - good serve!), add-Kat (long - good serve!), deuce (double-fault), add-Kat (long - good serve! - and the only 2nd serve of this game, except for the double-fault), and long: 3-all. Ans then drew a wide, and double-faulted: 15-15. A "kind-of" winner made 15-30 then a good serve made 30-30 (short). A winner from Kat made 30-40, but a short, after a 2nd serve, brought deuce. A short brought add-Kat then another short brought deuce again. A long brought another add-Kat then Ans was called for a foot-fault (she had many during the week) then a long gave the break to Kat: 4-3. A good return brought a short: 0-15, then a long made 15-15. Another good return made a long-wide: 15-30, and a wide made 30-all. On a good point, a wide made 40-30 and a winner made: 5-3. Then a good return made a wide from Ans for 0-15, but a 2nd serve brought a wide for 15-all. A good point made 30-15 then a short made 30-30. A long, then a short (after a 2nd serve) made 5-4. A long then made 15-0, and a wide made 15-15. A good point winner (after a 2nd serve) made 30-15, and another winner made 40-15 (double set point for Kat!). But 2 good points produced a wide and a short for deuce. Then a winner and a 2nd serve wide gave the set to Kat: 6-4. YEA!

This has taken me about 3 times longer to write that it took them to play. This is all I have time to post tonight. Hopefully I can post the rest later, and soon. In the meantime: GO, KAT, GO! YOU'RE A PLAYER!
