Where are you travelling from? Man the young persons railcards are great! i will save like 60£ just from going to surbiton and queens for 9 days! :worship:
Dogdriller May 19th, 2005, 05:51 PM Oh, to be eligible for a Young Person's Railcard......
JoeB_UK May 19th, 2005, 06:08 PM Oh, to be eligible for a Young Person's Railcard......
16-25 or a mature student and feel like splashing out on whatever takes your fancy? Then save 1/3 on most rail fares throughout Britain with a Young Persons Railcard.

I'm coming from lichfield, I got 2 single advance tickets for £10 each with my Young Person's railcard ;) £10 each way isn't bad to go from Lichfield to Surbiton (including the tube journey) going on one of those nice posh virgin trains at 7am :D not bad at all
To add to my excitement, I have the pleasure of going with exoneuk too :o :p should be good

 Just crappy national rail trains here :( seats covered in dirt and dust lol! :tape:
I will leave at like 8.16-8.30 on the weekdays (as if you leave earlier, you have to pay 20£ extra lmao!). Although on the weekend, ill get the 8am train (it means i am gonna be late for every day because qualies are 10am and the maindraw 11am). But to be honest i dont fancy getting up any earlier  If you are that tired from getting up that early i dont tend to enjoy the tennis!
I am gonna be walking from the surbiton station to the grounds, but i am wondering how long the 1.5 mile walk usually takes  I am quite a fast walker hehe. Waiting for a bus and then going on it, will probably be alot slower than just walking straight there  ?

It won't take you long to walk there, i went last year, and I don't remember it taking too long, 30 mins roughly, and of course it depends on how fast you walk like you say.
JoeB_UK May 19th, 2005, 06:30 PM I have allowed 30 minutes :D so i guess ill be 45-60 minutes late :D Any idea usually how they long they play till?
JoeB_UK May 19th, 2005, 06:35 PM Thank you for your message, enquiring about Qualifying dates at Surbiton, which was sent to the LTA Webmaster and then forwarded to me for response.
As Surbiton is a mixed event, the event is 'staggered' with the Women's event starting a day earlier than the Men's event.
Women's Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May, with Main Draw beginning on Monday 30 May.
The Men's Qualifying is scheduled for Sunday 29 and Monday 30 May, with Main Draw beginning on Tuesday 31 May.
Therefore, Monday 30 May will be a combination of Qualifying and Main Draw matches.
All the above is weather permitting, of course!
I hope this information helps and please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further details regarding The Surbiton Trophy.

Yeah, but I'm 38 and past it
JoeB_UK May 19th, 2005, 07:04 PM lol i was gonna say maybe you were 24 or something and would be ok to get one! but then i saw your dob
Not a mature student though?
JoeB_UK May 20th, 2005, 03:23 PM Play is scheduled to start at 10am on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May, with play starting at 11am from Monday 30 May - Sunday 5 June inclusive.
It is worth checking the LTA website on a daily basis, as these times could change - subject to weather etc.
JoeB_UK May 21st, 2005, 11:43 PM I dont suppose there are any more changes to the list tobi?
exoneuk May 22nd, 2005, 11:38 PM Gonna be dead good :D I'm gonna be wondering where the hell I'm going though. It's a good thing I printed off a journey plan otherwise I'd get lost in Edinburgh or something (knowing me I would...)
Ellery May 22nd, 2005, 11:52 PM Please win this, Tammy!

lol i have printed that map off and all the train times :D hopefully i dont get lost
JoeB_UK May 24th, 2005, 07:00 PM Does anyone know how often the buses go from the station (surbiton) to the tennis grounds and how long it usually takes on the bus? it should only take me 20 minutes to walk 1.5 miles so i am not sure if its worth getting a bus.

JoeB_UK May 27th, 2005, 10:41 PM I am wondering if anyone could help me out (i do not know the players from the qualies list, and i will be going to all the qualies). So i am wondering if anyone could tell me which players to look out for etc? I have no clue about 90 % of them :D
All the players i know, have withdrawn.
Thanks
jayakris May 28th, 2005, 01:24 AM So, I assume Neha Ubeori also got into the main draw?

Monica_Rules May 28th, 2005, 02:08 AM I would have thought Boulykina,Liga Dekmeijere, Katie O'Brien and Kristina Barrois are prob the ones to look out for.

paul_masterton May 28th, 2005, 03:29 PM this event is always so random. cut offs just plummet from like 500 to get into qualies at 6pm thursday, to 1200 when the draw is made 24 hours later!!
anna hawkins not having much luck lately, although she is taking doubles by storm!!
Cindy is top seed, so you have to presume all 4 original wild cards got in, Jane and Amanda certainly did to take the main draw up to 20 players. And i guess a few others are out.
Otherwise it means Karen is injured worse than we thought
lol Becky Fong staying on the grass for the first time, and gonna give mel Berry a much needed win just like she did for Anna last week :)
some of the wild cards are a tad odd as well  :tape:

Ok i am back from surbiton :D got there about 9.40 am and left at 5.30 pm (was hot and got burnt). There were a few matches on when i left, but i was getting abit irritated :D
I saw barrois match, its actually quite funny about this match against sarah coles. I was practicing with my camera taking photos and sarah coles dad comes over and asks me if i am a pro lol (everyone was looking at me with my 300mm lens lmao). He asked me to take some photos for him (so i have, he wanted to pay me, but i said no dont worry because they may not be any good). He gave me his email, and ill send them to him later. He also said she is playing against barrois (i said i was gonna watch this match anyway :D). Sarah got beaten easily in two! barrois is great, nice forehand, great variety; serve and volleys occasionaly, great slice, nice volleys. I have loads of photos, i am gonna upload them now.

i was looking forward to going 2moro, but the schedule is utter wank! 6 singles matches at the same time, which means there are only two matches on court. Thats pathetic, past few days we have had 4/5 matches on each court. Why have they made it so its impossible to watch, i mean i would want to watch 3 matches which are all on at the same time lol.

well, what you should do is;
watch Amanda Janes match first, as she is amazing, then, go and watch Becky LL vs. Emily, because that could be an amazingly close match ;) the rest, you can decide for yourself :p have fun tomorrow

Now, what you really should do, is start with Shikha :D She plays on a smaller court, I guess? Great for you :)
Shikha will win easily, so then you rush to see some of the last points of Saori beating Surina. Then you venture to Court B to watch Rika's awesome play.
You give yourself a short break, rush to see Jennifer & Mashona play fantastic tennis and then eventually you finish the day with Shikha and Neha's stellar net play in doubles!

Thats the way to start the grass season.
Dogdriller May 30th, 2005, 06:35 PM I tried to go today, was already on the train there when it started raining, and by the time I got to Surbiton it was absolutely torrential, with some thinder for good measure :mad: I decided I wouldn't risk going to the tournament to sit around for several hours just in case they could play, so got the first train back into town & went shopping instead
Glad they got some matches played, presumably as only 2 matches per court were scheduled, they should actually be able to finish today's matches today and not fall behind. I also went yesterday, just men's qualifying which didn't really hold my attention that well, though I did see Anne K & AJ practising, Anne's knee is all taped up which I hope is just precautionary.
I'll be going again tomorrow (weather forecast looks *much* better!) then it's back to work Wednesday.
JoeB_UK May 30th, 2005, 06:46 PM Sounds like we all made great choices not to go! :D

Grachka May 31st, 2005, 07:53 AM Straight Sets Win For Janes
"Amanda Janes brightened up the opening day of The Surbiton Trophy when she put a frustrating 3 hour rain delay behind her to record the first result of this year's event with a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 win over Latvia’s Liga Dekmeijere.
“I’ve been serving well for the past few tournaments and I have been working hard on it. My game is built around serve and volley and, in fact, I learned to volley before I learned to hit groundstrokes. Now it would be nice to get a shot at Kristina Brandi or even Tanasugarn in the Final on Saturday” she added with a chuckle.
Her wish to get a crack at Brandi the number 2 seed is now a reality after the Puerto Rican, champion at Surbiton in 2003, cruised into the second round beating British youngster Alice Mackenzie 6-4, 6-0.
British number one Elena Baltacha opens Tuesday’s play on center court at 11am against Jennifer Hopkins of USA while alongside her on the adjoining main court will be Lancashire’s Jane O’Donoghue against another American girl Laura Granville.
Four other British girls will be in action – Laura Peterzan, Karen Paterson, Katie O’Brien and Anne Keothavong all playing first round matches.
Tuesday also sees the start of the men’s €50,000 event with British interest focusing on Alex Bogdanovic against big hitting Australian and double Grand Slam finalist Mark Philippoussis and Arvind Parmar against American Jeff Morrison."

abs May 31st, 2005, 04:05 PM just a little note on katie
she lost her 1st service game broke back latter on in the set to level the set at 5-5 but then lost her serve , cho holds to take the set 7-5
katie seem to get down on herself very quickly but was getting lots of encouragement from lucy and david felgate.
a good player, good weight of shot she should do well in the future
everytime i see karen play i can,t believe her ranking is that low her serve is fast her shots are powerful she has the game i still think she could make the top 100
bally well she was just bally she played well she could have finished the match in 2 sets as it was a close 1st set
anne had her knee straped up but she seams to be moving fine
it looked like rain as i was leaving but hopefully it will hold off

*hingis_forever* May 31st, 2005, 06:03 PM Well, BBC says that O'brien and Peterzan lost but no scores.
It also said that Anne's match with Neha was an ill-tempered encounter! I wonder what happened!? lol!
Dogdriller May 31st, 2005, 06:12 PM Just got back fron Surbiton where I watched a couple of matches.

Firstly Karen vs Barrois, which as the score suggests was a bit of a heartbreaker for poor Karen. She was the better player overall but not at the times it mattered most. Starting brightly she broke in the first game and I think then had a break-point for 3-0. I was impressed with her game, she seems like a good all-courter, as equally comfortable at the net as rallying from the baseline. Serving for the set at 5-4 she played her first bad game; her first serve which is definitely a weapon when working, deserted her and errors allowed Barrois to break back. The German then saved a break-point to go 6-5 up and an increasingly dispirited-looking Karen lost the tie-break, then left the court for a few minutes. On return, she was back to how she had been and totally overwhelmed Barrois in the second set aided by powerful serving, 6-1 was a fair reflection. Karen seemed more relaxed again and was laughing off any errors rather than getting angry about them as she had towards the end of the first set. The third set was tight at the start but Karen seemed to have made the breakthrough going 3-1 up with a break in the third game, I noticed her passing shots were paying dividends here, and Barrois was now getting angry with herself. At this point, it looked like Karen was well in command, but unfortunately she let it slip. She seems to play better when behind but loses a bit of confidence when ahead. Barrois broke back to level at 3-3, after that there was very little in it, both players probably tense at the closeness and getting tired. I was always worried that at the crunch, the uncertainty which cost Karen the first set would be her downfall here and so it seemed as Barrois broke again for a 7-6 1-6 7-5 victory. Karen must be gutted, but she has the weapons to go much higher in the next few years, so I hope she fulfils her potential.
Dogdriller May 31st, 2005, 06:13 PM After a spot of lunch, I then went to watch Anne’s match with Uberoi, which certainly got, shall we say, “controversial” at times ! Anne seems to be in good shape and form though a bit erratic; she’ll play well for a few games then start producing errors to let her opponent back in. She ought to have won a bit more easily than she did, but got the right result in the end. Anyway, in the first set, it seemed to be a definite advantage to be the receiver as the breaks flowed thick and fast. Anne went 5-3 up but let Uberoi back into it; luckily for her the American gifted her the tie-break with a string of errors; I think the score was 7-0 and it might even have been 7 straight errors!! So what could have been a tension-filled dogfight turned out to be a cakewalk.
Anne then seemed to get into her stride and went 2-0 up in the second when the first “incident” happened – Uberoi went to talk to the umpire, couldn’t hear what they were saying. Anne wasn’t impressed and made an “Oh, for f****s sake!” gesture with her arms, anyway Uberoi left the court presumably for a toilet break – funny time to do it though, 2-0 not being a change of ends. On return the American got back to 3-3, another spurt from Anne took her to 5-3 with plenty of powerful and accurate groundstrokes and it looked like she’d got things fully under control. But no, a bad service game when serving for it at 5-4 let Uberoi back.
Then with Anne serving 5-6, 30-15 and struggling a bit, came the next “incident” – Uberoi again went to talk to the umpire who told her at least twice to play until the end of the game whereupon she screamed “I JUST HURT MYSELF!!!” at him. Much commotion ensued, I heard Anne saying it was not acceptable and probably a few other things. Eventually an official came on to talk to Anne and the trainer to see Uberoi of whom it was announced would now be taking a 3 minute injury break (ie in addition to the 5 or so she’d already had!). Anne v. pissed off. On resumption, Anne held to great relief and applause and we were in a tie-break again. Uberoi went 4-1 up and I feared the worst but Anne found her touch and began pounding her groundsrokes again, taking 6 points in a row to win. Lots of cheers from the stands which then turned to jeers in the American’s direction as she refused to shake Anne’s hand. I don’t think Anne was too bothered though ! So a good win, but I think she’ll need to raise her game to beat Granville, but fingers crossed.
Dogdriller May 31st, 2005, 06:14 PM Hmmm, not sure why those Smilies ended up in my first post, nor why the font changed in the second !!!
*hingis_forever* May 31st, 2005, 06:19 PM Thanks! Poor Karen! Do you know Kaite's and Laura' score in the end?
Dogdriller May 31st, 2005, 06:24 PM Katie lost 7-5 6-2, not sure about Laura's it would have been something like 6-3 6-3.
Katie is very loud when hitting the ball, BTW  I didn't pay much attention to her match which was on the court next to Anne's but she certainly gives the ball a good whack. I think today she was just outclassed - though by no means overwhelmed - by her Top 100 opponent, plenty of promise though!

Good fight from Katie this is only her second match vs a top 100 player and this time a player whos half decent on grass. Shes obviously getting better maybe in the mext few weeks she'll notch that first massive win.
Sad for Laura but 3 and 3 is not bad for her first 25k. Surely shes got a bright future.

jayakris May 31st, 2005, 08:36 PM Neha sounds like a real cow, I'm glad Anne beat her!
Did you read the damn report? .. It was not Neha who was making obsene gestures. If I am reading the report right she asked for breaks when she was AHEAD. Why would she, unless she was in some trouble.
Neha has been battling a rib cage problem for 6 months and it is the type that could flare up brielfy at any time (though it is getting rarer now, as the docs had expected, and she is almost back).
She did not do anything that a cow would do. I don't know about Anne. If Neha refused to shake hands, I would think there were some reasons. She does not deserve to be called names here.
Jay
Dogdriller May 31st, 2005, 08:51 PM Anne was 2-0 up when Neha went for her probable toilet break, Neha was 6-5 up when she had the injury timeout - she seemed to be having problems with her lower back and lay on her front whilst having treatment.
jayakris May 31st, 2005, 08:56 PM Thanks Dogdriller. I know that Neha has been battling an injury for a while. She has been told that she has to play through a bit of pain till that rib cage problem settles back in. I assume Keothavong (excitable firebrand that she is) misunderstood the situation...
Jay
Dogdriller May 31st, 2005, 08:56 PM BTW, Anne was not making any obscene gestures; she simply threw up arms up in exasperation at one point. I was just adding my own suggestion as to what was going through her head at the time, which in hindsight, I perhaps shouldn't have done. I didn't think at the time about how it might be open to interpretation, so I apologise.

play starts at 10.30 which means i need to pay an extra 11£ for my train journey to see the baghdatis match. But knowing my lucky, ill pay the extra and wont have play till 11-12 (which means 11£ is wasted). But ill take the risk.

Spain-Moonballer Jun 1st, 2005, 07:36 PM Did you read the damn report?

I AGREE
I spoke to Nanda Alves and she said Neha is a sweet girl

JoeB_UK Jun 1st, 2005, 09:47 PM Frequent showers meant that only half an hour’s play was possible at The Surbiton Trophy today (Wednesday) long enough for Elena Baltacha to gain the advantage of a break of serve as she moved into a 3-2 first set lead over Vilmarie Castellvi of Puerto Rico and for Alan Mackin to drop the opening set 2-6 against Antony Dupuis of France.
Play was officially abandoned for the day at 5.50pm.
Tomorrow’s schedule starts at 10.30am with Greg Rusedski making his long awaited appearance in the tournament after the British number two was forced to sit around all day today kicking his heels in frustration.
