Harris=Mrs. Alan Harris

Called the "third annual" event in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Bertha (the paper also calls her "Bertie") Townsend repels the New York invasion by downing the New Yorker Robinson in an exciting contest. After barely winning the second set at 6-5 a partisan crowd cheers her on to victory over a tiring opponent.

Sources indicate this was the first USTA santioned national women's title. The USTA later retroactively recognized the 1887 event.

There was also a doubles event played in 1888, but the USTA must not have made that official until 1889, for that year is listed as the first.

Unique features that are odd to our "modern" eyes are the 6-5 set scores and byes after the first round. Standard scoring of winning by 2 games and byes in round 1 only were still a couple of years away.

Ellie Roosevelt, a first cousin of the future President Franklin Roosevelt, becomes the first non-Philadelphian winner. For the final "nearly 2 thousand interested spectators" came to "watch the erractic bounding of felt-covered sphere". 'All have been compelled to confess that the late champion [Townsend] has not been playing nearly so well as last year of late".

Roosevelt kept up a steady reply while Bertha attempted "brilliant shots" that just missed their mark. Ellie raced out to a 5-0 lead in set two before the champ recoverd to win 2 games. "With 40 to love in her [Bertha's] favor it seemed that Dame Fortune would yet deign to smile on her, but, alas! in trying to return a hot one, put two balls in the net in quick succession. Miss Roosevelt then took a brace and finally won the set and the championship."

Early interest focused on Miss Cahill, who was visiting the US from Ireland. All admired "this plucky daughter of Erin" for playing despite doctor's orders not to because of an injured wrist. She came near to defeating Roosevelt in the semis but had to retire in the third set. Cahill's "manly play" was " a revelation to some spectators". Mabel got loads of applause for hitting spectacular volleys. After winning the first set Cahill tired. As the paper put it, "she gave unmistakable evidence of overtraining in the second set." Roosevelt "generously allowed her rival to rest several times, but it was all of no avail."

Standards were still not in place for lawn tennis.

The crazy quilt draw featured a "preliminary round", with Grace Roosevelt getting a bye, then in the next round Cahill got a bye straight into the final. The idea of putting all byes in the first round to even out the draw wasn't yet in use. If contestants were tied at 5 games all the next game decided the set. Yet in the ladies doubles final the middle set was decided by an 8-6 score.

"A great crowd" watched the final match, "which was splendidly fought from start to finish, and every stroke was liberally applauded". Cahill attacked on her forehand with a "Lawford"-like stroke. (Lawford was a male champ who used a big topspin forehand).

Notes:

The draw is reconstructed from the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Some oddities: Miss Stone and Miss Kemble (see **) are shown winning in the Prelim round, but not mentioned after. This is probably an error on the paper's part.

Also, first round matches marked * were actually listed in the paper as First round matches. If this was the case, then those women won a Prelim match and got byes in the next round. This is possible, as standards in draws, courts, and even balls were still being debated at the time.

Early doubles action is incomplete.

The Prelim match between Kemble-Williams set an early record for most games(in a 3 set match) at 50. The match lasted for over 4 hours.

Miss Terry won the cup for 1 year and an enamel laurel wreath pin. Miss schultz won a pair of opera glasses made of gold and pearl!

The ladies doubles winners got French traveling clocks, handy when playing away from home.

After the final, dinner was served at the club. In the evening "The grounds were illuminated by electric lights and Chinese lanterns ..."

The orchestra was stationed on the clubhouse porch and furnished the music. Dancing was indulged in all the evening and it was quite late when it was all over.

The final was a thriller. Atkinson saves a record 5 match points!

A Tennis Battle That Was Royal
Championship play breaks a record for stubborness and quality Miss Atkinson Wins--Successfully defends her cup against Miss Jones--Latter meets with misfortunes.

Miss Juliet Atkinson is again lawn tennis champion of the women players of the United States. Good luck, superior physical condition and hard, nervy play enabled her to win yesterday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club grounds. Miss Marion Jones is the daughter of Senator Jones of Nevada.

This is a total of 26 games for Miss Atkinson and 25 games for Miss Jones. The point total was 185 points for Miss Jones to 177 for Miss Atkinson.

It can be safely said that none of the previous 11 women's contests (from 1887) was there such an exciting finish. To show the grand excitement of the contest and to tell why the crowded grand stand remained nearly filled until long after the dinner hour, it is but necessary to explain the score in the deciding moments.

Each of the plucky girls had won two sets, and in the 5th and deciding set the score stood :Miss Jones 5, Miss Atkinson 3. All Miss Jones had to do was win the set on hand. In it the score was 40 to 30 in her favor. All she needed was one point to win the game, set, match, and united States championship. Just one little point, and here is where Miss Jones' misfortunes commenced.

In the rally Miss Atkinson returned and the ball struck a ball not in play, lying in Miss Jones' court owing to the negligence of the umpires. The ball in play glanced off and shot along the ground, so that Miss Jones could not return it. This made the game "deuce" and Miss Atkinson won out.

This brought the score in games to 5 to 4 in Miss Jones' favor. Still she had the better chance. Four times in this set she needed but a point to win,and yet she never got it, Miss Atkinson "deucing" it and eventually scoring the two consecutive points. Once Miss Jones had "vantage" and neaded but a point. Miss Atkinson's return went outside of the court and and the match then and there belonged to Miss Jones, but the umpire on that line failed to do his duty and decided, contrary to the fact, that the ball was in. This decision alone cost Miss Jones the match. This little Westerner deserves unlimited praise for her splendid showing in this, her first appearance in a US championship match without the age and experience of her opponent, lacking her physical condition and having been unwell for several days, she all but defeated a champion twice.

As to the quality of play, it was the best that has ever been put up at these tounaments. The rallies were often long and spirited and both played well and made some splendid strokes. Miss Atkinson went up to the net oftener and was very effective, but the game was distinctly a back court struggle. Both used a well-judged, hard, low fore-hand stroke with good effect, and did some remarkablt clever back hand work as well. As the club's poet, Mr. "Cliff" Patterson, put it:

Good shots on both sides followed fast
But some one had to yield at last.

One thing that told very material in Miss Atkinson's favor was physique. To use a masculine athletic term of condition, "She was hard as nails". She is light and very active and this enabled her to cover more ground than Miss Jones, whose stocky stature and weight were no inconsiderable handicap.

Interest was not at a peak owing to the absence of Jones and Atkinson.
The local paper maintains that the recent popularity of golf as a women's sport is partly to blame.

On day one the specatators barely outnumbered the players.

Bessie Moore survived two grueling matches to win the national title. In the final she fought back from two sets down and match point at 6-7 to defeat Atkinson. In the 5th set both women were exhausted to the point of leaning on their racquets. After 58 Moore had passed her first trial. It was on to the Challenge Round to face defending champ McAteer.

Normally Bessie would have have no problems with McAteer, but the long semi had drained her of energy. "With general humidity out in full force" for the Challenge round. Though "taxed to the upmost", Moore prevailed after 47 games. Utterly spent by playing 105 games in two matches, she defaulted the doubles final. Concerns over the ladies health prompted the USTA to ban 3 of 5 set finals soon after, despite the wishes of most of the women.

*Note: Get pics from local paper. They are fantastic! The first year of full page photos rather than artists sketches.

With all the previous winners of the past 5 years entered interest ran high. The semis seeing the latgest crowd ever. People got so out of hand "and interfered to such an extent that the benches" were removed from beside the court. The USTA unilaterally decides to stop the tradition of 3 of 5 set finals for the owmen. The paper notes that, "the cholder of the title was not even consulted on the subject." The women mount a petition that "even hinted that one person alone" was resposible for the change, but the petiton was ignored.

Could the "one person" have been Westerner Marion Jones? The irony was in the final Besie Moore fainted in the second set, something that never had happened in longer matches. Jones gallantly refused to accept a retirement and proposed putting the match of. When Moore was still unwell after a couple of days Jones was declared the champion.

Notes:
All the women were from the east except for Carrie Neely of Cincinnatii. The best American female, May Sutton, is competing at Wimbledon. Bostonian feminist and socialite Evelyn Sears wins.

Evelyn had a tough time with frail Newport socialite Maud Barger-Wallach, who took the second set 10-8. Maud got cramps and play was stopped "til she recovered", but Evelyn won through. Maud won the title in 1908 and often played with her doctor present courtside!

Notes:
American Lawn Tennis reported that there was "a lowering of class" as "many contenders of former years" were absent, especially May Sutton, who entered the Canadian singles then went back to California. Also missing were the 1907 and 1908 champs Evelyn Sears and Maud Barger-Wallach.

Hazel plays "essentailly a man's game". She quickly overcame her finals opponent, the match lasting 34 minutes!
In the ladies doubles the most excitement came in the quaters, where Green, who "played brilliantly at the barrier(net)" and Candian moyes, with her many aces, gave the champs a real fight.

Miss Moyes the first ever Canadian to make a slam quarterfinal.
Hazel Hotchkiss=Hazel Wightman.
Mrs. Pouch =1984 champ Helen Helwig
Hammond later married as Mrs. Raymond.

A "Patriotic" event was held as the US had recently entered World War One-known at the time as "The Great War". As this wasn't officially a USTA national title (this was disputed in later years) the defender Molla Bjurstedt "played through" rather than wait until the final by choice. The New York Times declared the event "for all purposes the National title". 1917 was unusual as there were two foreign entries. Molla was form Norway and Dahl from Denmark. Mary browne beat Molla sevreal times in 1917 in a series of exhibition matches, but unfortunately did not enter Philadelphia.

Mallory shows her mettle from the start with a double bagel win in round one that took all of 17 minutes. She is seeded first-the first seeding ever in a US women's title. Last year's fiasco with Lenglen and Mallory meeting in the 2nd rd. has convinced the USTA that seeding is the way to go.

A young sensation has arisen from the West to challenge Molla. Helen Wills wears her schoolgirl uniform to the court, but she is more apt to play the role of teacher than student. Even at 16 she posseses a better serve and net play than all entries. Only Molla is her superior off the ground. Helen whipped through the draw until she met Jessup in the quarters. Marion's serve and volleys won her a set before Wills barely pulled out the second. Helen's power took the third easily. Against 35 yr. old May Bundy in the semis Helen resorted to drop shots with telling effect, "though she was rather prone to overwork it." Helen tried off-pace tactics in the final. The change of pace didn't faze Molla a bit, as the Norse star ran Wills off the court in a 6-3 6-1 final witnessed by only 2,500. The lack of foreign entries kept many a fan away.

Wills takes permanent possession of the cup with her 3rd US nationals in a row before a Monday finals crowd of 7,000. With her win over Kitty McKane in the finals Helen establishes a clear lead of 4-2 in their rivalry. After losing the first set Helen's shots only increased in pace as her foe tired, a pattern that followed the semis where Wills "raked her opponent's court with blistering shots".

The match that "enthralled " all was the semi tussle between Mallory and McKane. "Marvelous Molla" was 2 points from a win at 5-3 when Kitty clawed back by taking the net. At 5-4 Molla was 6 times within two points of victory, only to see Kitty's volleys repeatedly dig her out of trouble. McKane got the game winning point to tie at 5-5 when Molla's passing shot clipped the net and bounced back. When it ended the pair got the biggest ovation of the week that even had the loser smiling as she left thew court.

McKane had upset Elizabeth Ryan in the quarters. Ryan was an American expatriate who lived in England and was entered in her own championships for the first time ever. She was a co-favorite coming in, having upset Helen Wills at Seabright.

Notes: There was seeding. It was the 1921 Lenglen disaster that introduced the concept. Ryan-Mallory at 1-2 (or reverse), with Browne, Goss at 3-4. Anderson and Bayard were tough.
----------------------------------------------
Some of these women were around a long time. Eleanor Sears was around in the "aughts" and Barger-Wallach was the 1908 champ! Wightman was the 1909-12,19 winner.Browne 1912-14.

A poor entry. Helen Wills was still recovering form her appendicitis operation of June. The British were absent as the Wightman Cup was played in Britain. There were no foreigners entered. Ironically,Molla was considered more American than Ryan, due to Ryan's living abroad. Fans cheered the Norsewoman mightily as she batterd her way to one last Us title-a record 8th.

Notes:
A good field with 5 top notch Brits because of the
Wightman Cup.
May Sutton was US champ in 1904! This is her last US
Nationals at age 42. Surely one of the oldest seeds.
Shepherd-Baron is the only foreign entry unseeded. She
was considered a doubles specialist.
9,000 saw the finals.

Draw notes:

Baroness Levi was born Maude Rosembaum of Chicago.

Betty Nuthall becomes the first foreigner to win the US title for women. Though Cahill (Ireland) and Mallory (Norway) might also be considered foreign they were living in the US at the time they won their titles. A slim gathering of 4,000 watched the finals. Crowds were down noticably as Helen Wills opted not to defend her title and Helen Jacobs was absent because of a year-long illness. Molla Mallory is now retired and not entered for the first itme since 1915. There is no first class American female standing between Nuthall and her only slam. The field is so weak that none of the 57 seeds was seeded at all at Wimbledon.

Nuthall's toughest match came in the semis, where she blew two set points in dropping the opener and was down 2-4 in the second.

The Baroness "who chops almost every ball she hits, including her service", provided some flair this year's event sorely lacked.
