View Full Version : Processor Performance ? for Poe
TammysBigSis Mar 20th, 2002, 01:06 AM Hi, Poe!
Just a bit concerned because my processor was rated 100 during my first task, but is now only 13, and I don't have any other programs running during the day when I'm offline. Should I be concerned?
It took 72 hours to complete the first task, but it seems to be taking a lot longer to finish this one (36 hours and I'm only at 36%). I know my system is slow, but maybe it can't support UD. Any suggestions?
Thanks for spearheading this worthy project! :wavey:
Gallofa Mar 20th, 2002, 03:33 AM LOL! I just saw your signature :D so how often do you get asked if you are *really* Tammy's big sister? ;)
Based on my experience with this thing, some tasks take ages to complete and some others are rather small and take just 3-4 hours. I have completed up to this point 34 tasks and some times, the performance thing says my pc is 120 and some others that it's 60, soooo... I wouldn't be too worried, as long as your pc works ok, the tasks will eventually finish themselves off. But probably Poe can explain this better ;)
Poe Mar 20th, 2002, 03:57 AM From what I understand, the rating is only updated when a result is sent to the UD servers.. that's why everyone starts out at 100 for their first task...When the first task is done, the program evaluates the speed of your computer's different components and compares them to the high-end machine.. You can click on each component and see which ones in particular you are rated badly for.. the amount of disk space you allow the program to use can be changed in your profile
the rating changes each time a result is sent because it rates it on the environment it had to work with during that task.. so for example if you had more programs running during that task, the rating will be lower.. because it had fewer resources to work with
If you're rated 13 that is very poor, and maybe you could tell me what the details are for each of your components.. like your processor speed etc.. which you can find by clicking on each one
you may have not met the requirements.. and if your comp is rated that low i think most tasks are going to take a very long time
hope that helps
Steveg Mar 20th, 2002, 05:42 AM I have same problem with my computer. My main concern is :
- processor : currently 96 / 100 while I have a P4 1.8Ghz
- the worst is my network connection (36 / 100) which is normal I guess because I have a dial-up not faster than 50kbps
So I can make it up on average thanks to more HDD space allocated and good RAM, but I am surprised by the processor rating. I started at 100, went to 116 and down to 96 now.
I have already a few tasks completed.
When I check task manager, UD is often anywhere between 97 and 99 (all the more so as I leave the computer on 23 hours / day and am using this home computer not more than 6 hours / day with light applications for the time being). Besides I make sure no other applcation is running when information is sent / received to / from UD.
Anything wrong?
BTW, my UD name is Stéphane_Vietnam under the team list.
Poe Mar 20th, 2002, 05:52 AM the only reason i can think of that you wouldn't get over 100 for your processor is if there are other programs running in the background... you can see which programs are running by pressing ctr-alt-del on your keyboard.... howevery my friend has a comp as fast as yours and no matter what she does on it her rating always stays high
i don't think it matters if you close all other programs just before sending results.. it will still base it's evaluation on the entire cpu time during the task
mine is only rated 44 overall.. cuz i always have a few browser windows/chat programs etc. etc. open.. and i don't have a powerful comp to begin with
In any case.. I don't really have the answers you're looking for.. BUT a great place to look for them is here (http://forum.ud.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi). You can try the search or look in the troubleshooting forums, or even post a thread yourself asking.. they are very helpful there. (more helpful than i am ;))
:)
Steveg Mar 20th, 2002, 06:18 AM Thanks Poe :) ,
I had checked the task manager. I have several applications open (mostly for Windows I guess. Not too sure of the names of these applications :o ) but I think they are mostly inactive.
When I check the CPU allocation, it is used up mostly by DU and some system stuff.
What surprises me mostly is that the processor rating has been constantly going down for the past 36 hours or so while there has been no change in my use pattern  . I don't think it's because my CPU is getting tired though ;) , because I leave one hours "rest" (and mostly cool down) per day.
I'll have a check at the link you mention in the evening.
TammysBigSis Mar 20th, 2002, 07:27 AM Thanks for the forum link, Poe!
Gallofa-I added that last line to my signature because I'd get that question in the Tammy threads every now and then. I don't post that often, but if I did, I'm sure would have gotten more. It was just funny to me that people would ask if I was a good friend of Tammy's, even after reading my user name, but I suppose that's because some fans out there like to think they are related to their faves! ;) Yep, I know I'm lucky, especially when I have that "Player Guest" badge hanging around my neck!

It does matter Poe. The program checks your system everytime it starts a new task..then it gives your computer a certain rating. The rating will stay the same for the rest of the task. I started a task on a moment that my processor was very busy, and I had may be 20 programs open.. I got a 1 for my processor. Last time I closed all programs before sending my results and I got a 75 what's normal for my computer. So it does matter...
