Australian Open 4th Round
Monday, January 24, 2005
N. Dechy def. A. Myskina 6‑4, 6‑2

What was the problem today? You couldn't get that many forehands to the court.
No problem, just a bad day, bad game. Nathalie playing pretty smart against me today. That's it.

Were you surprised at the way she could hit her forehand? Normally her best shot is the backhand. Today she was really good with the forehand as well.
Yeah, I think she play pretty good match today. Forehand was really well. She didn't do a lot of unforced errors. It was mostly I missed the whole match. So I can't say really that she won the match; I can say that I lost the match.

How do you explain so many mistakes, easy errors, you made today? Were you sort of tired? You said last week or in Sydney you were tired. Do you think it's connected?
I don't know. I can't really say if everything connected. I just can say that sometimes you have a bad days. Maybe that's one of the bad days today. We have a lot of tournaments, so next week maybe it's going to be my week. I'm really look forward for another tournament.

How disappointing is it when you have a bad day in a Grand Slam in the second week?
Yeah, it's really disappointing because my draw was pretty good draw. Let's put it that way. I have really great chance at least to be in the semis, especially that Dementieva lost today. I didn't really use that chance. But I think I have another one.

The fact that Dementieva had lost before you played, did it affect your concentration?
I was really nervous. That was long match. I was actually watching, and I was really hoping that Elena was gonna win because was really tough match for her. Maybe that's not the Russian day today.

On the court, you couldn't focus on the match?
Yeah, it was really hard. I don't know why. Maybe because of the long match before me, because I was kind of afraid at 4‑Love. I thought it was gonna be fast set. But then was completely different game. I never won a match on Rod Laver court. So maybe that's not my court. But just it's one of excuses...

Do you see that physically you are worn out a little bit because of the long last season, not having enough rest between them?
Well, I don't know. Maybe yes, maybe not. But definitely I'm not in the best shape right now. But still you can win the matches being in that shape. You just have to focus. Today, I couldn't really focus and concentrate during the whole match. I lost a lot of easy balls.

Just going back to my question previously. The disappointment you get, Grand Slams obviously amplify that a lot, especially when you do have an opportunity like the draw you had. Is that something you will dwell on or is it something that doesn't last all that long?
I really ‑ I think I have to forget this match and just have to keep on, because like I said, I have so many tournaments. I'm going to play Antwerp, Doha, Dubai. I have to think about these tournaments already now. I have to prepare myself for that tournaments. If I can just practice hard and think positive, then everything gonna be fine.

At the end of last year you expressed some discomfort with having Maria Sharapova on the Fed Cup team. How do you feel about that now if she's playing?
How many times we can talk about this? I have no idea. I mean, come on. I don't care who's gonna be on the team because I might not be there just because the captain decide that I'm not good enough to be on the team. So we don't know who's gonna be on the team, who's gonna be captain of the team. It's too far to say something about Fed Cup right now.So basically she felt pressure and collapsed.

Anastasia you are such a poo head. http://www.imagelink.org/id37702.gif

If you combine the whole match which was absolutely the worst I have seen from her so far and the Sydney loss, this sentence is the worst of the worst ever...ouch, ouch, ouch, that hurts. Keep her away from all the bridges...oh man.

Yep, but I guess the fact that Masha´s name was mentioned again made her saying something like that. I guess it was where she finally realized that she won´t be best russian anylonger, but only third best, but well...what comes around goes around ;)

Disagree. I think Anastasia just doesn't want to talk about that anymore, as she has said in her previous interview, shes had a discussion about it and will now live and be responsible for her words. I think shes really disappointed.. which she should be. I hope this forces her to work on the weaknesses in her game and her mental strength. If she had a big serve she'd pull out more of these matches where shes "off".

what comes around goes around ;) What are you saying. http://www.imagelink.org/id30715.gif

I don't understand that either

Anastasia should help Sveta dress herself.
 Yep

Ok, so she slipped in the rankings a little, but NO WAY she will fall, remember these words "ambitious" and "workaholic" ? What Nastya needs is motivation. Well I think after winning Fed Cup and wasting time (thx to someone else - who btw is playing his best right now :fiery: ) in Hopman, the "motivation" was kind of vanished. She is such a patriot. I think Russia considers her still #1, she's done so much for her country.
Nastya rest !!! Then start fighting your way back to the top, stll lots of tourneys, 3 GS, Fed Cup (?).

Fun facts (Warning : PLease enter if still pissed ) :D
LOL Spunky
She is inconsistent as hell right? Well the "down" part has passed, now waiting for the "high" one.

If you believe in karma then i guess other players have some extremely bad ones. Mauresmo must of been an murderer in her past life, always so close but so far.

I think its inevitable that Anastasia lost her #1 Russian spot, with her lack of consistency she can't really expect to keep it full time. I don't really think it has anything to do with her big fat mouth.

But also people have to stop jinxing her! Especially that AlexB guy, he picked the wrong player to be arrogant about. http://www.imagelink.org/id30822.gif

Time for a new article concerning the "I love Dubai"-tourney;)

Russian duo will be back at the Dubai Open this year

Staff Report

Dubai: When Anastasia Myskina played at the Dubai Tennis Championships last year, she was just another upcoming name on the circuit.

Now, she is Anastasia Myskina French Open champion.

The same transformation has happened to her Russian compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova. 'Sveta' - as she is nicknamed - has evolved into Svetlana Kuznetsova - US Open champion.

Both will be returning later this month to try and add the Dubai Tennis Championships trophy to their growing list of achievements.

"We are delighted to have such high class players as Anastasia and Svetlana coming back to Dubai," said Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free.

"The Russian players certainly showed they are among the best tennis players in the world last year and I'm sure they will be looking to continue their run of success right here in Dubai."

Many, however, believe they will be hard-pressed to emulate what they accomplished last year.

The dynamic duo, apart from winning a Grand Slam singles apiece, also played a major role in earning Russia their first ever Fed Cup title.

Both Myskina and Kuznetsova won their two semi-final singles rubbers, with Kuznetsova also triumphing in the doubles with Elena Likhovtseva as they crushed Austria 5-0.

And then Myskina, partnering Vera Zvonareva, clinched the final for Russia in the doubles, overcoming defending champions France.

It was the icing on the cake for two of the most modest players on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

At a tournament last year, the players were staying in two separate hotels one was excellent, and the other was even better.

Anastasia was staying in the one that was only excellent, and asked politely if it was possible to move to the even grander one.

It was duly arranged, but then she changed her mind because she didn't want to appear as if she considered herself better or more deserving than the other Russian players at her hotel.

Svetlana is another player with her feet still firmly on the ground.

After winning the US Open, and then competing in the doubles final on the Sunday, she still kept a commitment to fly halfway around the world to play in Bali. And she won the tournament.

"I always like to keep my word, even though I was very tired," said Kuznetsova. "I want people to like me."

And Kuznetsova loves coming to Dubai.

"I always look forward to coming back to Dubai," she said.

"It's a wonderful tournament. There's definitely something about Dubai. There's something in the air.

"I love to play in Dubai because people are very welcoming to the players and there are so many players on the tour who are happy to come to Dubai. We all enjoy it and it's always a nice atmosphere."

Both players have yet to win the Dubai event, but last year Kuznetsova came close, beating Venus Williams before conceding the final to Justine Henin-Hardenne, who celebrated her second consecutive Dubai title.

She also reached the doubles final with Likhovtseva, while Myskina reached the quarter-finals before coming up against a red-hot Meghann Shaughnessy.

The Dubai Tennis Championships is held under the patronage of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence.

I think if I had the chance to play there and get everything paid, I would have definetly asked for Burj Al Arab and stayed there until the whole week is over no matter if I lost in the first round or not ...I think J-Cap stayed there along with some other players

Nastyafan

Do the players get paid for their stay in the hotels? I doubt Nastya would have asked for the change if some other paid for it.

I dunno, I´ve heard that the top-players get free rooms, but then I´ve also heard that Coria once lived in a Holiday Inn, just to save some money...I have no idea...but why else do tourneys have player hotels?

I remember that Dubai actually had free rooms last year.

cool_olga
Feb 13th, 2005, 07:17 PM
In main tournies, from ATP and WTA tour there always is hospitality so players get free accomodation and food. In challengers it's not always with it. But it's not that players gets it for forever, I don't know exactly but it's like 2-3 days before player has first match and 1-2 after, something like that. So if player loses early he can't stay free till the end of the week.

Nastyafan
Feb 13th, 2005, 07:40 PM
Hmm, then the slams should pay 1-2 millions only for hospitality. And what about player's teams, some players lead 5-6 people with them and want to be in the same hotel. Do they make reservations for all and the organizers pay for the player and the player - for the team? It's too complicated:confused:

By Etienne Stekelenburg - February 17 2005

I enjoy my stay in Belgium but there is just too much rain, too much water?, Russian Anastasia Myskina said at the ?all access hour? of the Proximus Diamond Games in Antwerp. ?I like to see Antwerp and I like shopping, I like all the places I play in?.

?This is my first time in Belgium, the practice court is really good and the hotel is also really good and I like shopping so I can go there during the day?.

?My goal for this year is to get better and defend my French Open title and to win more. But then people expect you to win more so it's harder to handle the pressure. If I can handle the pressure and stay healthy all is going to be good?

?It looked as if I was not happy in Paris after my win but I was really happy. It was hard two weeks, a lot of emotions. It was an emotional two weeks. So after everything was finished I had no energy to show how happy I was. After a couple of days I was showing everybody that I was happy?.

?It's also harder to become No.1 because I am at No.6 now but I want to play good every week and play my best every week. You know, when you work hard everything is getting better, so I have to work harder. I do believe I can become No.1 but right now my real goal is to stay healthy and play my best on court?.

There are no special events that I want to win. We play almost every week, I like every country that I play, I like every tournament that I play. Now I have a choice to go where I like. I think every win is nice, you want to win because you want to be the best, it doesn?t matter in what place you win. And every Grand Slam would be perfect?.

?The gold and diamond racket is really nice, I love to have one in my home but it's a pretty hard tournament this year, a lot of great players. So just work and maybe I can get it. A prize like the racket is not an extra boost to come to a tournament. I didn?t think about the racket and the diamonds when I came here. I am just here because I want to play; I just love to play tennis. That is why I am not here because of the diamonds?.

After the interview Myskina was asked to hold the racket for, she was somewhat reluctant to do so. ?I can?t hold it, it's too much pressure? the Muscovite said as she was handed the valuable gold and diamonds award.

Myskina Looking for Three in Doha

DOHA, Qatar - Two-time defending champion Anastasia Myskina returns to Doha this week, once again looking to jump start her season at the Qatar Total Open.

For the past two years, Myskina has come to Doha with hopes of winning her first title of the season and has walked away a happy customer. In 2003, Myskina began the year 4-2 and with only one quarterfinal appearance before winning the Doha title.

In 2004, Myskina had reached the quarterfinals in three straight events before finally getting her first breakthrough at Doha.

This year, the Russian player comes to Qatar with a similar start and hoping for an identical result to the previous two stays in Doha. Myskina has a 4-2 record this season with her best result coming from last week's semifinal stint in Antwerp.

Myskina will be the No.3 seed this week - behind top seed Amelie Mauresmo and No.2 seeded countrywoman Maria Sharapova. After a first round bye, Myskina will face the winner of Iveta Benesova or Conchita Martinez in the second round.

Yesterday in Miami before opening of a female super tournament « the Star for stars », the most prestigious ceremony of delivery of the premium has taken place in the world of professional tennis. At the moment of signing number we yet did not know a name of the winner. And some days prior to flying away in the USA nominated Anastas Myskina's premiums has answered questions of correspondent «??».

Conversation have decided to begin with pleasant.

? What to feel itself, Nastya, in a role of the pretender to such superprize?

? Certainly, it will be healthy, if I shall receive "Star". It is very good, that the world of tennis does not cost on a place, constantly develops. But the purpose at me another ? to rise above and above in rating WTA.

? The last year you have executed her ?

? Yes, I am pleased with results of the last year. Has managed to become the first ???????? to Russia, the third in the world. But, if it is fair, the most important award for me for works ? pleasure native. I very house person, am very much adhered to Moscow, to the house. Therefore and my favourite holiday ? New year. But already for a long time did not meet this holiday in a circle of my relatives: at this time I prepare for the Open championship of Australia. But at midnight necessarily I ring round all people expensive to my heart, I congratulate them. It is very expensive me, as it is sincere they wait for my bell ?

? Olympic passions for a long time have settled ? As you have gone through the fatal failure in the Athenian semifinal?

? Till now I do not understand, that then with me has taken place. That defeat in me actually has broken something. I have suddenly thought of any moment, that anything the worse with me did not occur and will not take place any more. But me has carried: a number appeared native people, they have very much helped. Began to come to the senses after a victory over the Cup of the Kremlin. The Cup of Federation then was, then me have chosen « the Person of year », together with Federer have recognized as the best tennis players ?

Has Perhaps, cracked me that from me all waited and wait only for victories. But I cannot always be the first. It was not restored up to the end after a season, has entered this year tired ?

? Whether it seems to you, what with each years tennis becomes more and more atletic, rectilinear? And the epoch "clever", aesthetic tennis leaves in the past?

? Can be. Probably, time dictates the rules. Trainers give more and more attention "physics" of the sportsman,in fact to resist to power tennis, not having such strongly pronounced physical data, as at Davenport or Momo, really difficultly.

? The season of soil tournaments, your loved ? will soon begin

? The present professional should be able to play on any covering. It is not necessary to choose ? it is necessary to leave and play!

? But favourite tournament at you is?
I like all tournaments of " the Big helmet », like to play Switzerland, Arab Emirates, in Qatar where won, to Bali twice, in America. But loved ? the Cup of the Kremlin.

? For combined team on the Cup of Federation will play?

? The offer to me has acted, but I while think above it. And in general at our combined team excellent prospects.

The Tale of Two No. 1s
By Craig Gabriel

The late great Ray Charles has let us all know that "genius loves company." The current great, Roger Federer, who plays tennis like smooth R&B music, is proving that is not the case as far as he is concerned. The world No. 1 stands alone in the world rankings - he has a cushion of more than 1,700 points form his closest rival Lleyton Hewitt - and his achievements on the tennis court are something to marvel at.

So where does one begin when talking about Roger Federer? There are no new adjectives to describe him and the superlatives have also been exhausted. Unfortunately things might just get a bit repetitious.

The legends of the game like Rod Laver say that Federer is the best and Pete Sampras is suggesting that Federer is the biggest threat to the incredible records he set in tennis.

"I think now the consistency over the last, I would say, two years really have proven to everybody, also especially to myself, that I can do it," said Federer. "The important moments, like finals and against the other top ten players, this is the moment when I actually play my best. That's what usually the all-time greats do, I guess. Because I play the style I play, the one-handed backhand, I vary my game very much, I get a lot of attention also from the former players.

"So it's nice to hear but we'll see maybe in ten years how good I'm really going to be. So far it's been terrific, the career I have had so far. I hope I can keep it up this week."

The brilliant tennis player who is so together says motivation is no problem. He is having too good a time winning and winning and winning.

"I'm always looking for the match where I'm playing great again in front of a full stadium against another great player," said Federer. "That's been happening for me over the last couple of years now. For me there is no problem to maintain the motivation very high."

The NASDAQ-100 Open is one of the rare tournaments he has not won but he has been in the final once and he says being around at the very end allows him to get a real feel for the tournament and it starts to get more relaxed. But he's not despairing.

"I have a good feeling about this tournament - the surface and everything suits me well here," he said. "I won the juniors. Last year I had sunstroke, but I played Nadal who played great. I don't know what it was, but he just got me. I thought I was unlucky the year before against Agassi (but) it was already a breakthrough for me to get to far.

"I hope to win this tournament one time because it's a beautiful tournament."

While Federer is yet to win this title, Andre Agassi holds the record for the most titles, six of them. He's ready for yet another one.

Agassi comes into the NASDAQ-100 Open having pulled out of his quarterfinal match against Hewitt at Indian Wells because a problem with his toe. He had an MRI done and "structurally everything was sound". A lot of fluid surrounded the joint but otherwise there was no damage. He is ready to dip is toe into the water! Sorry that cliché could not be resisted.

"I always look forward to playing here," said Agassi who takes his first step (sorry couldn't resist) against French Davis Cup player Paul Henri Mathieu but who lost 6-1, 6-0 to Hewitt last week. "It's a great environment to play in. The fans are enthusiastic and love their tennis and the conditions are one that I enjoy playing in - the Florida sun and heat, humidity, wind. It's all good."

Incredibly it was 1987 that Agassi played this event for the first time, that's 19 years ago, and for the record when he plays the US Open later this year it will be his 20th. Talk about records - that is really remarkable.

"I don't know if it's impressive to play that much," said Agassi. "I have mixed emotions on it. Sometimes statistics hit you oddly. That would be one of many statistics that would make me go, 'wow, I've been doing this a long time'.

"I try not to lose sight of keeping myself in position to be at my best. A lot of that's mental. A lot of that's your approach towards a tournament. I don't allow myself too much luxury at this stage because I'm trying to focus on being better than the gut I'm playng against.

"That being said, there are a lot of times where sort of nostalgia hits you. You can't really avoid it. You see the same faces years later and you realize that in between all these tennis matches life is happening, and it's a pretty amazing feeling."

Two women who may not have achieved as much success as Federer and Agassi but are equally important to the women's game, are Amelie Mauresmo and Anastasia Myskina. What they have done in women's tennis must be saluted.

Mauresmo became the first French woman in the history of the computer rankings to hold the world No. 1 ranking, something she achieved in September last year.

"My main goals were the No. 1 ranking and Majors and they are still my main goals," said Mauresmo who has such a fluid game and possesses one of the most glorious backhands one could hope to see. "It was different for me to go back to work after getting number one because I wanted to take time to realize what I'd done. It took me a couple of weeks to get back to the rhythm.

"Now I'm focused more on the Majors. The No. 1 is not as important as it was before."

The top seed at the NASDAQ-100 Open says she has been playing well in practice but last week at Indian Wells she didn't put it into play and she wants to eradicate that disappointment here in Miami.

However, as one would expect the French open remain paramount in her mind. That's the tournament that "made me play tennis so there are lots of feelings."

She admits that she struggles with the mental aspect of her game there because she is under the microscope.

"All the French people are looking at me and at everything I do and I have to adjust to that," she said. "So far I haven't done it. You feel the patriotism and the pressure bit it's also an opportunity."

Meanwhile, Myskina was the one who started the Russian Revolution and reached a career high ranking of two the same week that Mauresmo got to one.

Sure there have been a number of Russian players on the tour, there must be something in that Moscow water, but Myskina became the first Russian woman to win a Grand Slam title, the French Open over her compatriot Elena Dementieva. After that the floodgates opened as Maria Sharapova took Wimbledon and Svetlana Kuznetsova won the US Open.

"I feel really great about start the Russian success because when you do something first it's always nice because no matter what they do after you, it's going to be after you. I won the first time with the French Open and it's great," said Myskina.

"The difference being a Grand Slam champion is more pressure and people really expect you to win every Grand Slam now, but you're a human being and you have your bad and good days, that's how it's kind of changed."

"I feel really great about start the Russian success because when you do something first it's always nice because no matter what they do after you, it's going to be after you.".... :worship: hmmm...something new to add to my signature;)

A. MYSKINA/M. Vento-Kabchi

An interview with:

ANASTASIA MYSKINA

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. No Russian woman has won this tournament. What are the chances it's going to happen this year, better than 50%?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Oh, I think even more because the girls are playing pretty good. Dementieva and Sharapova was in the semifinal last week.

I think all of us are really in a high level right now, and we just have to work hard.

Q. I mean, there's no other country that has more players in the Top 20, obviously. That alone would seem to give you a chance at some of the larger tournaments like this. How about describe your own play, how you're feeling this week.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: You know, I've been playing really well today, and I hopefully gonna continue to play like this.

But I know the beginning of the year wasn't good for me. But it's, you know, I gave a lot of energy last year and I did a lot of things last year. So kind of excuse, but I still need to work hard to, you know, to find my game again.

Q. Should you have been on Stadium Court to start out, do you think?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I don't really care where to play. The grandstand is really well, too, for me.

Q. How about Fed Cup, has that team been announced?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: No, not yet, because we don't really know who's gonna play and who's gonna be on the team.

Q. It looks like ‑ I think if the brackets are right ‑ if the US and Russia win the first one, the US will play at Russia. That could be exciting because of all the top players.

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: That's true, but, you know, usually in US, (not every) top players played Fed Cup. So I think that's the captain work, she done pretty good because in US, usually top players, they say they have so many excuses not playing Fed Cup. In Russia it's completely different story; all the top players wants to play and they playing.

So if Zina Garrison gonna bring her best team, it's gonna be really tough match for us.

Q. She said so far it's Serena, Lindsay, Venus...

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: That's going to be great team, I think. I think it's going to be one of the best.

Q. What are your own plans? Will you play?

ANASTASIA MYSKINA: I don't know. I don't know yet. I'm thinking. They ask me, but I'm still thinking.

Anastasia Myskina's preparations for the defence of her French Open title suffered another setback on Wednesday as she lost to 15-year-old Czech Nicole Vaidisova in the Family Circle Cup second round in Charleston, South Carolina.

World No.1 Lindsay Davenport, defending champion Venus Williams and former No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne advanced but Myskina's poor form continued as she succumbed to a second early exit in as many weeks, losing 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to the teenager.

Suffering with a cold, the Russian looked out of sorts, spraying groundstrokes long and wide and struggling with her serve in the gusty conditions.

Vaidisova, the world No.49, attacked Myskina's second serve to great effect, taking the opening set and breaking to lead 4-3 in the second. As nerves set in, Myskina, beaten in the third round at Amelia Island last week, levelled the match. The Russian fought back from a break down to 4-4 in the third set, but Vaidisova broke again and converted her third match point for victory.

AdvertisementAdvertisement
"It's a good win for me," said Vaidisova. "It's the highest seed I've beaten and it gives me great confidence for my next matches."

Myskina was disgusted with her performance. "With this bad game I had today, it still went to a third set and I think that's pretty amazing," she said. "We had no rallies, it was just me making all the mistakes. She served pretty well but that's all she's got.

"I want to play my best every tournament but it's not really happening right now. Deep inside I'm really upset but I'm really looking forward to the next weeks and hopefully it's going to change

OAKLAND, California (Reuters) -- Anastasia Myskina has pulled out of Russia's Fed Cup tie against Italy in Brindisi on April 23-24 with a shoulder injury.

Myskina's coach Jens Gerlach said the French Open champion decided after last week's tournament in Charleston that she needed to give her sore shoulder a rest.

Myskina was upset in the second round by Czech 15-year-old Nicole Vaidisova at the Family Circle Cup.

"We decided it was better not to take any more risks because we have Roland Garros coming up," Gerlach told Reuters by telephone.

Gerlach said Myskina - who led Russia to its first Fed Cup title last year -- will try to practise next week and then play Berlin and Rome before heading to Paris to defend her crown.

The world number six has only reached one semifinal this year in Antwerp.

The Russians have yet to announce a replacement for Myskina, although world number 12 Nadia Petrova is a possibility.

Captain Shamil Tarpischev has already named Elena Dementieva, Elena Bovina and Dinara Safina to the team.

The Italians are led by world number 20 Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta, who won two clay court titles in February.

The formula of the success of Anastasia Myskina
Cosmopolitan
Elena Kostyleva

Sports life - it's terribly even to imagine what is it! Today you beat the first player in the world - Lindsay Davenport, tomorrow you lose to someone who is hardly seen in the end of the ranking. But there are achievements, that no one will take away from Anastasia Myskina: she won the championship Roland Garros, she is among the five best player of the world.

I'm going to Nastya and speculating on my lack of sports abilities and on exactly today found love - no, passion! - to the sweetnesses. Just I enter in the kitchen, Nastya sits down at the table against me and sets out a plate with a huge piece of cake before me. To herself - exactly the same.

-And is it allowed for you? How about restrictions, I don't know, diets?
- There aren't any restrictions for me. I can eat, then sleep, then eat again. And won't get fat, thank mom and daddy for that. In general I consider myself too thin and think how to improve. I don't like very much my legs, it seems to me that they are skinny, and I would want that there was more content in front.

-I read your interviews - you speak astonishing things. For example you can say:"Well, sometimes I lose because of laziness" I haven't heard such things from any other athlete.
-I'll explain: it's because of tiredness. Sometimes it accumulates so much, that you just don't want anything more. Because the previos week has been the same. The marmot's day. And during the third week going on the court you don't know why. Maybe there is no need to admit such things. Probably it's necessary to speak that everything is super always.

-Everything is clear.Of course it isn't any laziness.
-(laugh)No, not laziness.

-"One and the same" looks differently at different people. Of what is yours consist?
- A waking, trainings, a flight, a passage, a running, a gym. Actually many people life so too: stand up, go to work, make some necessary affairs but all the same sometimes you become tired of that.

-But usualy a man may say:"No, today I won't go to work. Tomorrow won't go either" Can you say "No, what the hell, I have another plans for these 3 days" - and to abolish your participation in the tournament?
- No. There should be very serious reasons for that - an injury for example. I have obligations, including toward the organizers of the tournament. As to the trainings, sometimes I can say" today I can't. But again, in the evening the conscience prevails. You realize deeply in the soul - I did something wrong. The others are engaged and you lay on the sofa all the time, do nothing.

-And what? What if the others are engaged?"
-Well, there is a sport gambling. Still I should like being the best, for that I train since 6 years old. Even should be the best I would say.

-And what is the meaning of being the best in your sport?
-For us the most important are four tourneys Grand Slam - in Australia, France, England, America. And the world championship - eight strongest tennis players on the results of the year get there. Thus these five tourneys - majors, as you play them, soyou stay in the ranking.

-And is it possible once for all to win everything and to settle?
-No. If I have won a tournament - next year I have to defend my title, to prove that I'm the best again. This year again. So year by year you travel to the same tourneys, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose

-And the selfconfidence, the mood depend on that?
-Well, not only from that. How are the things in the family. The parents have always helped me very much. Daddy made very much for me. And mom too - she created very comfortable condition for me home. Many girls learn to cook, to wash vessels, floors, there weren't such problems for me. Mom perfectly understood that I want to rest after the training.

-And did the parents realize early that it's serious about tennis with you?
-They realized much earlier than me. It was clear to them that tennis is that I will be engaged with professionally. A kid can't take decisions, it wants to walk, to dawdle. The parents were making many decisions instead of me. It seemed to me that all that were made against me, but now I understand that has been for good. Of course there were moments when I was speaking" I don't want to play today, leave me!" Earlier if they gave you in sports school, there already the trainer grasped you severely. At this level I struck in lucky, very good coaches teached me and I don't remember that I haven't wanted to go go at all.

-And now, what is changed in the sense of education of tennis champions?
- Now everything turned on the commercial base and it depends on financial conditions of the family very much. Therefore mainly today children attend just for themselves. Of course there are parents that set themselves the task to create a champion but sometimes they aren't right in my opinion. My parents had always another goal - that I was happy. Though... Daddy wanted probably more, that I become a good player. But surely they both wanted that I was engrossed and that's the most important for a kid. Now they write a lot about our prizes and it seems to me that many parents want exactly that for their children. I don't know, maybe it isn't correct. But sometimes it's obvious how the parents coerce a child who doesn't want to be engaged with that at all.

- And daddy, does he continue to take care of you, your career?
-Not anymore. I take care myself.

- Again I'll cite you : right after you won the tourney in Palermo, you stated: " Now I have no fear of anything"...
-That was an youthful maximalism. Then it seemed to me that it was my best win and the limit of the dreams. Later I realized that it isn't so, there are another goals, big tournaments.

- But you speak often, that you don't set concrete tasks: to reach the final, to win that or other... You just win and then say: of course, there was that thought..
-Probably that's a superstition - to not speak before the tourney...

Hello, hi, I have an interview right now, can I call you back? (Nastya begins a talk in English with her coach who lives in Germany. Like many of them, whom the language is necessary for the work, Nastya speaks freely and easily, not caring about the pronunciation, but with tight intonations.)

-Where did you learn the language?
-(Laughing) Nowhere. It was necessary for me to commune a lot at during the tourneys, travels, girls who knew it helped. In the process of conversation I learnt... Where did we stop? On superstitions. Well, don't say "gop" before you jump over. I don't like speaking much until I do. Then I may say, yes it was the goal.

-Do you consider yourself a successful person?
-If it happens that I will live through the rest of my life after tennis as well successfully too, then I could say that. That's very important - to not lose yourself after sport. It's more simple for an ordinary man who graduates from the college - he has a speciality, he can make his life with it. We have as well: I can begin working as a coach. But I don't feel like very much - first , it's tough to coerce children doing that you have been coerced for life, second it's necessary being good psychologist to work with children. It isn't for me.

-What will you do then?
-That should be something my own, my business, not important what, May be a small restaurant.

-Such a strange question. Sometimes you said that you have a talisman as a plush dog, is it still with you?
-Well, that was long ago. Now I can't say that I have a talisman. I carry a toy, but only to be softer sleeping because sometimes the bedding aren't soft in the hotels. It's a a duck. I used to sleep on it.

-You answer so sincerely. Interesting, since how when the press began showing interest in you actively?
-Only since the last year.Sometimes it tires. But all the same they aren's so interested in me as in Alina Kabaeva let us say. Here, it's hard for her probably. Often people write spoof things try to characterize you as a human absolutely not knowing you, having seen few times on TV. They try to draw attention to the newspaper literally walking over people. I endeavour to not read newspaper, but my acquaintances read, their acquaintances... And do you read "Express-paper", "Speed-info"?

-No, I don't read.
-Thanks God!

-We, "Cosmopolitan have our themes - we can't avoid asking about the boyfriend. I have heard your friend lives in Germany...
-No, that was long ago and it is an untruth.

-So,we abolish all rumours?
-Yes. I'm not an actress, nor a singer, such a popularity isn't interesting for me. The only I can say - yes, I have a boyfriend. But neither who is he, nor what he does I will tell.

-Well, then tell us not who, but what do you love?
-When I'm in Moscow I listen radio all the time. I love our music: when you spend a lot of time abroad, it's pleasant to listen a Russian speech. I like the song of Dima Bilan " on the coast of the sky" So romantic! Recently we picked up with Dima,a good guy...What do I love more? As every normal woman I like going in salons. In my opinion it's very entertaining.

-Do you like movies?
-Yes, our old films: "Girls""The brindled passage" "Three plus two" I know word-perfect. I always carry them on DVD - watch when a depression comes. Every sadness melts away for half an hour. It's a pity they aren't making such films now. Blank serials about bandits with fights - burst here and there. Terrible what is created! Though, mom advised to watch "Vera's driver" Very good movie she says. From what came out recently I liked all full-length cartoons "Shrek-2", " Brother bear". Today I bought a disc "Underwater friends", I want to watch tonight. Further I liked "Fashion mom" and "How to lose a guy in 10 days" with Kate Hudson.

-Do you use it as a guidance in life? Do admirers surround?
-No. (laughing) Admirers don't surround. They aren't so many. More precisely he's only one and doesn't bore.

-And do you like shoping? Though probably you haven't time for that....
- Of course I have. If there is half an hour between the trainings - straight in the shop. I train in Krilatskoe, there is full of shops. Or I call friends "What in the shop?" I have design things for example from Hugo Boss, or Dolce&Cabbana, things from unknown marks too. I love very much Nike, all the time I wear their clothes. Their things are very convenient and beautiful.

-And are the friends engaged with trainings too?
-No, why? I have a friend I commune from school, earlier she played tennis but not anymore. My second friend hasn't any relation to sport nor to school. And I have another two very good friends. Though of course I have very little time for spending with them.

-And Dementieva?
-With Lena we have very good relationship. We chum since 6 years old but in a interview I read, that it's hard for her being a friend with me, the competition impedes.

-Didn't her words offend you?
-Why offend, it's her position.

-I have a serious question to you. You have an experience from wins and from losses. Tell us, What needs a human when he loses?
-Of course close people. It's very hard to lose. Especially when you are on a high enough level. If you are third in the ranking for example, you should lose only to 2 persons in the world by idea, the you should beat the rest. And if you lose it seems that you are worse already, , don't train enough, that tomorrow - another tourney and if you lose again? That is it, many negative thoughts visit the head... It was so with me in Australia this year - it seemed that nothing comes off enough, I want nothing more. The relatives were convincing me: well, didn't happen here, but there is another week...

-Do the parents call you after the translation?
- I'm such a person - better to call them myself. Sometimes I don't want to speak with anyone, want to delve in myself. Though it's even worse then. More often I call parents and just listen their opinion: what has come off in the game, what hasn't. Mom tells how I have looked on court. Interesting too.

-If you could change everything in your life, how would you like to live an year let say? Have you an ideal imagination?
-Of course, staying home for an year I could not. I haven't such habit. Therefore perfectly - if I'm engaged. Meeting with people, settling issues... And in the evening you come home and the darling dog welcomes you. So that you could rest, relax at home. At home.

-Not in a lodging?
-No, probably I want a house already.

-Of course, on the sea?
-No, somewhere... in the forest. (Laughing) That there would be a nature. I want a dog very much. For the present I have no one to leave with. And that you will leave it to someone and it happens that you devolve the obligation to take care of it to other people. Mom? No, I can't. It isn't up to a dog to mom.

-But she can't refuse in fact?
-That's exactly the point - she can't of course!

-It's strange your ideal imagination - "all day be engaged something, engaged""... And now, it isn't so?
--(Laughing) Yes. Such life, you can't stop. When I'm home for 2-3 hours it seems that I forget to do something: to call to someone, to negotiate about something, maybe I have promised someone something... It's necessary to do something all the time. To go somewhere, to hurry.

-So, is it the formula of the success?
-Yes, probably.

Injured Myskina doubtful for Paris

Saturday, May 7, 2005 Posted: 1908 GMT (0308 HKT)

var clickExpire = "-1";http://i.cnn.net/cnn/images/1.gifhttp://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2005/SPORT/05/07/tennis.myskina/story.myskina.jpg French Open champion Myskina has reached only one semi-final this year

OAKLAND, California -- Anastasia Myskina is doubtful for the defense of her French Open title due to a nagging shoulder injury.

The Russian, who has reached only one semi-final this year, has pulled out of next week's Italian Open.

The decision followed her surprise 6-2 1-6 6-4 defeat by German wild card Julia Schruff in the Berlin Masters.

"I'm still optimistic, but we won't know until the end of next week," said her coach Jens Gerlach.

"She's not 100 percent now and she's receiving treatment at home in Moscow. If she can't train the week before Roland Garros, it will be difficult for her to go there and play the way she wants to."

"Right now it's hard to think positive, but I'm hoping everything will turn out okay," Myskina added.

"I'm trying to do my best, but it's not really working. When you lose a lot of matches, you lose confidence."

Myskina is unable to practice serving because of her injury.

"I'm not going to find any excuses for why I'm losing right now," Myskina added. "I'm not losing because of my serve I'm losing because I'm not showing my best tennis from the baseline."

Myskina became the first Russian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title when she beat Elena Dementieva in the 2004 French Open final.

She lost in the Olympic semi-final to eventual champion Justine Henin-Hardenne before winning a tournament in Moscow and leading her nation to the Fed Cup title.

Myskina ended 2004 ranked a career-high number three and declared her intention of taking over the number one ranking but after being upset by Nathalie Dechy at the Australian Open, her game went downhill.

"I had so many unforced errors against Dechy and was so bad that after that I began to lose confidence because I felt weak," said the sixth-ranked Myskina.

"I have to work harder, but sometimes when you lose a match like the one against Shruff you don't want to play. I have to learn to win the important points again."

Gerlach said Myskina's injury might be a result of playing too much over the past three years.

The Russian has played 22 tournaments in the last 12 months, more than anyone in the top 10 except for Vera Zvonareva.

"The way she plays, she doesn't win a lot of easy matches and has to fight a lot in three setters," Gerlach said.

"She's put herself through a lot. She was due for a break sooner or later."

Gerlach said that if Myskina's shoulder does heal in time for the French Open starting later this month she must rediscover the fire in her belly.

"She's been a champion and knows how to dig deep like a champion," he said. "If she gets to Paris and wins a couple of good matches, maybe she'll feel the magic of Roland Garros again."

Latest article on www.anastasia-myskina.com , translated it from "Le Figaro"

http://sports.lefigaro.fr/article_tennis_myskina_a_plat_2404.html

Found a very interesting (yet not brilliant) article on the website of Le Figaro, the online version of the popular french newspaper. Interesting to read as the author describes the current situation very well in a neutral way, but at times it gets a little bit out of hand though. I´ve translated it the best way I could (my french sucks) but I think it´s acceptable. Go read about the story of the so-called "Hingis-clone";)

Myskina worn out
17th May 2005

Less than a week before the opening of Roland Garros will take place, Anastasia Myskina is in big trouble. Loss of confidence, poor performances...after a great season 2004, the titleholder faced a bad turn since January. Will a return to the door of Auteuil ("Porte D'Auteuil", note by translator) be enough to let the spirit revive?

http://www.anastasia-myskina.com/gfx/upload/1116313739.jpg

A little piece of finesse in a world dominated by harshness
The picture of Anastasia Myskina raising the Cup Suzanne Lenglen June 5th of that year had initialized the beginning of the domination of the Russians on the womens´ tennis circuit in 2004, noticeably with a boundless freedom apart from the russian tennis institutions back home. Taking advantage of the both recurrently injured duo, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters, the vanishing Williams´ sisters and the mentally friable Amelie Mauresmo, the young Muscovite sparked off the June-Revolution, doing wonders for the self-confidence of the rest of the Russians. Myskina demonstrated that by playing with a piece of finesse in a world marked by harshness doesn´t reduce the hopes of winning at all.

Before her triumph in the Door of Auteuil, the so-called "Nastya" probably wasn´t the greatest sensation on the tour, but only a few experts dared to doubt her devotion. "I think that it´s not enough to earn the title of a big slam. In a tournament such as Roland Garros, she will probably find it difficult to keep up with the others", George Goven (Fed Cup team captain of France, note by translator) predicted in the "L´Equipe" (huge french sports-newspaper, note by translator) at the beginning of 2004. Regarding the game of the Russian, it was hard to negative the criticism. Mentally fragile and distinctly less powerful than all the members of the top ten, her accession up to the fifth rank of the WTA is a huge accomplishment in a sport in which only the strongest survive, a circumstance which also forced the talented Martina Hingis to surrender.

"Clone" of Hingis
"Her game has nothing special, it depends on the pysical abilities and she needs to work on that", Patrice Dominguez has said, joining the team-coach of the Fed Cup team in his opinion but both men of the FFT (Fédération Française de Tennis, note by the translator) also acknowledged the qualities of Myskina, making her able to create suprises, "Her strokes are not very powerful but they are very quick and are always put well. She has a huge sense of anticipation and moves very quickly on court. It all comes together with a huge tactical sense and overall a very intelligent game." The "clone" of Martina Hingis had been born and was going to to haunt down the mind of her rivals all throughout the rest of the season.

A pitch-dark season
When the year 2005 started, Myskina was rightly a candidate to take over the rank of world-number one. After more than a quarter of the year though, it must be said that the accomplishments of the young Russian are definetly far away from her ambitions. At the moment she just can´t hold her own game to the powerful ones of her opponents. The combacks of the former world-number ones, Clijsters, Henin and Serena Williams pointed out that her accession to the second place of the WTA-rankings was partly due to the absence of her rivals.

It is enough to take a look at the results to realize that the current season marks a complete turn-about: 9 wins are standing against 9 defeats (it´s 8-9 by the way not counting a walkover, but thanks! note by the translator), including crushing defeats to little known players such as Peng or Schruff...Less than a week until the opening of Roland Garros, the Muscovite acknowledges that pressure was too heavy for her fragile shoulders (note by the translator: those shoulder-phrases are really funny, aren´t they?). Imaginary wounds, personal problems, all those reasons were listed to explain this descent into hell. As it´s time now to return to the place of her triumph, only a few expect her to repeat her performance of 2004. While her compatriots Sharapova and Dementieva confirmed playing, doubt has creeped into the head of the titleholder. Let us hope for Myskina that the good atmosphere of court Philippe Chatrier will avoid her making the same descent as the glorious Martina Hingis.

Yeah, I mean Hingis...it´s certainly more complicated than this. In the article it seemed like she stopped playing cause she didn´t have the game to overcome the powergame era which according to most people started when the Williams had their breakthrough. Truth is there were a lot of reasons why Martina retired at such a young age. It just all came together...you´re right the thesis is wrong in some way, although as a fan of Hingis and Nastya, I am just amazed sometimes that people compare her to Hingis as Nastya has to do a lot more to be compared to her imo.

I'm not saying the thesis is totally wrong and that it can't also be applied to Nastya, the problem is one can't say these things so easily...it's just mean speculation ...and low level journalism that is usually seen in tabloids...

I found an article on a Belgian website (sport.be)
It's written in Dutch, I'll try to translate it sooner or later (could be later ;) )
Maybe you can understand a bit of it if you know a bit of German :)

btw, it's written by an ex-tennisplayer from Belgium, Filip Dewulf
It's a sad article (you all know what it is about  ), but this is actually the first (!) time he treats her with respect (he hardly ever mentions Nastya in his articles, but if he does, he only writes that she's not talented and stuff like that). I'm glad he shows his sympathy in these hard times.

Lijkt me terecht. Haar plaats is op dit moment niet op de tennisbaan maar aan de zijde van haar mama. We wensen haar veel sterkte toe en een spoedig herstel, voor moeder én dochter.

It's not just 'some' language. It's Dutch (or Nederlands as we call it) !! ;)

They only talk about Kim (that's the problem here in Belgium, they only talk about Kim and Justine :( ), Nastya appears on the screen only for a few seconds, so don't worry if you can't see it, you won't miss much.

Roger Federer and Anastasia Myskina were honoured as 2004 world champions on Tuesday night.

The duo picked up their awards at the annual ITF World Champions Dinner in Paris.

Federer was a clear choice for the honour having won three of the four Grand Slams during 2004, missing out only at the French Open.

Myskina, who won at Roland Garros and helped Russia to Fed Cup glory, edged out world number one Lindsay Davenport and Amelie Mauresmo for the women's gong.

ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said: "Roger Federer was the clear choice for ITF World Champion based on his extraordinary performance in 2004.

"The selection of Anastasia Myskina came down to her performance at the Olympic Games where she reached the semi-finals and her seven singles wins in Fed Cup in 2004. We are proud to have both players as our 2004 ITF World Champions."

I'm kinda new here (been here for a while but just haven't posted yet) and I've been a Nastya fan since Hopman Cup last year. Even though she's somewhat in a slump atm but she'll be back, better and stronger than before!!

Anyway, she looked really pretty at the awards ceremony and it would be super cool if she won the mixed doubles!

After a turbulent start to 2005, Anastasia Myskina manages to retain a sense of humour as she looks to get back to form on grass.

The Russian headed to Eastbourne on the back of four successive defeats as her game crumbled.
